I like them, too, but they're not implemented in iOS very well anymore. They're used for navigation instead of scrolling. I'm used to it now, but was disa ppointed about the change in the beginning. I'm one of those apparent few who do like the wiz wheels. It seems natural for me to just turn one a click when reading and wanting to read either the rest of the current line or the beginning of the next. It's just a nice way to scroll down a page. I thought this way too, until my Focus14 Blue decided to go-slow and then quit working. The Focus40 Bluue classic is far more robust (but heavier) than the Focus14. Meanwhile, my Focus14 went back for repairreplacement, being under the manufacturer's two-year warranty. -Original Message- From: Nicki keck Sent: Sunday, January 18, 2015 12:12 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Focus 40 original and IOS 8 I have used an original focus 40 blue with IOS 8, and frankly, I like my Focus 14 blue with it a lot better. I switch back and forth from 8-dot braille to 6-dot contracted. I am so happy now that you can adjust these separately for input and output, as I was constantly doing a G-chord by mistake when typing a message, typing in grade 2 braille before realizing I was not in that mode, and having to backtrack and delete and retype. I always switch to 8-dot input when inputting an e-mail address, Web address, or username and password. I find it works a lot better honestly. Also, with VoiceOver Help on, pressing keys and chords on the Focus40 will tell you what they will do. The 56-chord cycles forward through the rotor, the 23-chord cycles backwards, and dot6-chord and dot3-chord cicle forward and back respectively in a rotor item's settings. -Original Message- From: Charles Rivard Sent: Friday, January 16, 2015 8:58 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Focus 40 original and IOS 8 I'm having trouble with mine. I have used an original focus 40 blue with IOS 8, and frankly, I like my Focus 14 blue with it a lot better. As you say, more commands are supported. The only way to flick right and left with the original aside from using a chorded command to do it each time is to use the wiz wheels. I really never liked the wiz wheels. They are, at least for me, hard to control. Also double tapping to me isn't intuitive. I like using the mode button for that on the Focus 14 blue. I don't own the original focus 40 blue, and honestly, I'm glad I don't. Even with the extra cells, I much prefer my 14 with the iPhone. Re: Focus 40 original and IOS 8
Is it a Focus 40?, or is it a Focus 40 Blue. If it is a Focus 40, you cannot pair it with an iPhone, because it does not have Bluetooth connectivity. If it is a Focus 40 Blue, you set the iPhone to search for Bluetooth devices after turning the braille display on without it being connected to house current. When the device is found, you enter the 4-digit code supplied with the braille display. That should be found in the user's manual, as well as the instructions on how to pair it with your phone. --- Be positive! You may find that eight-dot braille input - select with one or two presses of the 236-chord - will give you more flexibility with braile entry. Thanks. This is very confusing to me to read, though. Here is a small example that perhaps you can explain. It shows: When using the Freedom Scientific Focus 40 Blue (Classic model) braille display with VoiceOver in iOS, you can use these device-specific keys to navigate. Re: Focus 40 original and IOS 8
I'm having trouble with mine. I think the main problem is that I don't know what the heck I'm doing with it at the moment. Trying to send an Email to myself as a test, when typing my Email address in the "to" field, I get gibberish, so I delete it using the onscreen keyboard. Also figuring out how to delete from within the inbox. I think that what I need is a list of commands for the braille display when using firmware 8.1.2 on an iPhone 5. The firmware of the braille display is 4.57 if that matters. Any thoughts on where to get such a list are appreciated. Thanks. --- Be positive!
