I am not saying it's easier in Windows, but I posted my instructions quite a few times now and send them directly to a few more people and I believe they were all able to follow them and create ringtones. Yes, there are about 8 or 10 steps involved depending on how I word it and also on how technically experienced somebody is. However, if you do get it to work and do it a few times, it takes little more than a minute or 2 to create a ringtone. The most time is spend on setting the start and end point if you hav a song where you don't want to start at the beginning and simply set the end point to 38 or 40 seconds because if you want to start a few seconds in and stop at a point that makes sense you have to set your start and end point, listen to the selected part of the song, then fine tune your start and end points where you listen each time after you do so. Obviously if you do this 3, 4 or 5 times you can easily spend 3 to 5 minutes doing that. After that it takes another 30 seconds to create the ringtone, rename the file, copy it into your ringtones folder and play it so it gets added to the library. The basic steps are really only that: 1. Select the part of the song you want by setting the start end end point in the Options tab in "Get Info". 2. Right click on the song and select "Create AAC Version. 3. Go to the newly created ringtone, select "Show in Windows Explorer", then rename it so it has an M4R instead of an M4A extension. 4. Now select copy or Move and paste it into the Tones folder which is in the iTunes Media folder. 5. Press enter on it to play it which automatically adds it to your Tones library, then sync it to your phone.
RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Hi Barbara, Have you checked whether you set iTunes to "Sync All Tones" or "Sync Selected Tones"? It sounds to me that maybe it is set to sync only selected tones and you haven't tabbed into the list of tones and checked all the ones you want. This is when your iPhone is connected, check the Tones radio button, then tab until you get to these options. If selected tones is checked you have to tab a few more times until you get to the list view of all the tones, arrow through the list and use the spacebar to check the ones you want, then sync again. If this doesn't work, feel free to send me one or two of the tones directly to siegh...@live.ca and I will check it out. You can also approximate your start and stop points by playing the song on the phone. The track position field will tell you how many seconds/minutes have played in the currently playing song. Re: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Do you have any audio editor such as the latest version of GoldWave? If so then creating ringtones is quite simple. The situation you have with iTunes is that you have to know what segment of the song you wish to take the tone from. Without this knowledge no one can give you a quick way other than to tell you to set the stop marker at 400 seconds. Otherwise, you will need to buy an app or pc software that will do the work for you. Or just keep buying tones or getting them from friends. *** When you give unto others whether or not they give to you in return, It matters not for your job is Complete and your rewards forthcoming. - Original Message - From: Rose Combs To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 9:39 AM Subject: RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones I wish someone would right a straight forward guide for ring tones, everything I see looks like 20 steps to nowhere. Thanks. They are the right file type with the right extension. I'm not on that computer right now but I will look for them tonight and get them in the right folder and see what happens. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2013 11:53 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones Sherry, Are they M4R files? If you want my more detailed description just write to me off-list and I'll send it to you. There is a big difference between a process you perceive to be difficult because it involves a lot of small yet relatively simple steps and one that really is difficult. Lastly, there are several apps out there which create the actual ringtone and which are accessible and being used by members of this list. However, you still have to email the ringtone to you or use iTunes file transfer to copy it from your phone into the Tones folder where you can play it and then sync it. Personally I don't necessarily find these apps any easier than using iTunes and really the only thing they don't require you to do is rename the file with the M4R extension. RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Hi, There is a difference in terminology here. The ring tone with AT&T as I've said can be just under 40 seconds. How long the carrier waits before sending the call off to Voice Mail is a different animal and apparently you can change the standard four rings to a higher number by calling your carrier and requesting that change in many cases. True, though, like the old days with iOs updates, it is even yet dependent on iTunes, whether you got another device for it, or not. Some only have their iDevice, where does it leave them? though also true, they'd not get a lot of their other material to it either, if that were totally true. Ta, R. - Original Message - From: "Sieghard Weitzel" To: Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2013 3:19 PM Subject: RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones Hi Rob, You are not wrong, all apps I have seen create the ringtone, then the app either emails it to you or you have to save it via iTunes file transfer to your ringtones folder on the computer, then sync it to you rphone via iTunes. While you can't create it and have it placed directly into your ringtones folder on your device where it would be instantly available, I don't find that extra step too difficult or time consuming. If I use an app that can email me the ringtone, I just save the attachment in my Tones folder in iTunes Media, then I press enter on it which forces iTunes to open, play the tone and by doing so add it to my Tones library. Then all I have to do is make sure it's selected/checked in the Tones section when my iPhone is connected since I choose to only sync selected tones and do the sync. I'd say it would take me about 1 minute to save the attachment, open my Tones folder, play the tone and then sync it. If you want to use iTunes let me know and I can send you a set of instructions about how to do this. It's not difficult if you are an average computer user and know things like how to show file extensions in Windows, how to rename a file with a different extension, copying and pasting and how to sync via iTunes. The latter you have to do regardless whether you create the ringtone with an app or with iTunes. The only way you can download ringtones directly to your phone is if you buy them in iTunes. Hi marcy, While your instructions summarize the basic steps, Bill is not using a Mac and there are a few more steps involved on a PC. Also, if somebody has selected MP3 as their Codec they won't have an option to create an AAC file and would have to first change this. Just saying. Hi Bill, What you described should work. Only way it wouldn't work is if you selected to sync only selected tones. In that case you might have to do one more thing before it will sync. With your iPhone connected go to the Tones button, check it and then tab until you get to your listview or tones. Find your new tone and make sure it Is checked. I'll send you the instructions to create a tone with iTunes privately. RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Hi Rob, You are not wrong, all apps I have seen create the ringtone, then the app either emails it to you or you have to save it via iTunes file transfer to your ringtones folder on the computer, then sync it to you rphone via iTunes. Re: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Hi, You can do this through iTunes. However, before doing this, make sure that hide all unknown file extensions checkbox is unchecked. If I have that wrong, Sieghart can chime. He helped me a lot in creating mine. Also Applevis.com has a great tutorial on creating ringtones with iTunes. Shane.
