Re: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-10-04 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

It does have ethernet & you can buy a wifi card for it, but all you
can do is watch iPlayer (Currently inaccessible) and do firmware
updates. There isn't a feature to control it remotely and I'm guessing
it won't be added since Tvonics are in administration.
I'm still up for a chat if you want Louis?

Cheers,
Ben.

Hello VIPhone Group

We are building a new television remote for the VI and Blind in association
with the Royal National Institute for the Blind in London.

This remote will be a mobile application for the iPhone and iPad platforms.
We have just secured a partnership with TiVo and are now moving ahead with
the design.

I'm interested in knowing what features would be the most useful for the
members of this group.

Please tell me what would make the TV controller experience better for you.

I'll keep everyone updated on our progress. Our website will go live in
about a month with me more details.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Sieghard,

Bell FIBE is the very latest way of receiving your signal through telephone
line and not with a satellite dish. Right now, I think its only available
in Montreal and Toronto but very quickly expanding. It's a special modem
with router that the TV box connects to.

What type of device do I have to plug into the TV box for the IPhone to work
with and does it plug into the Ethernet port of the box?

Hello Ron,

I have know idea what the Bell Five is, I assume it's one of their new
receivers. I have a Bell 9242 receiver which I purchased about 4 or so years
ago. In any case, if your receiver has network connectivity, i.e. if it can
connect to your home network either with an Ethernet cable to yor router or
to your WiFi it should work fine. Once it's connected, Just look for the
"Bell TV" app on the app store and give it a try.

If it connects directly via wWiFi this means a lot of older devices that are
not network attached can't be controlled. I am in Canada and have a Bell
Expressvu satellite receiver which is hooked up to my network. However, Bell
already provides their own app which is quite voiceover accessible and which
allows me to see what's playing, select a program and set up the PVR
function of the receiver for recording stuff. My Sony LCD TV which is about
5 years old is not capable to be connected to my WiFi and I think there
would be a lot of people for whom your app would be more or less useless
because they have stuff that isn't network or WiFi capable yet.

I think having a solution similar to the RedEye remote is better as long as
you can find a hub that is reasonable in price. I haven't tried RedEye yet
because the hub is $200, but I probably will try it this winter. I wrote to
them and they claim it is Voiceover accessible, they are interested in
getting feedback and told me that through the retailer they offer a 30-day
money back guaranty should it not be to my liking.

I have tried one solution, the RE Universal Remote, which uses a 30-Pin IR
Dongle and while it works to some extend, it is not as Voiceover friendly as
it needs to be and what's more, I am not at all interested in something I
have to plug in to my phone because it is too inconvenient and I also found,
and this would apply to any app no matter how well it worked, that simply
the fact that I have to pick up my iPhone or iPod Touch, unlock it, go into
the app is slow by nature especially if all you want to do is turn the
volume up or down and I just don't see how I would ever use it over the
remote that came with my device. The same goes if maybe you are watching a
DVD and you want to pause it because the phone is ringing, I guess if it was
an iPhone app and assuming it would controla DVD player which you said it
doesn't at first, there could be a setting to automatically Pause when the
phone is ringing just like music playback stops when the phone is ringing.

Anyhow, there are many ifs and all sorts of issues. I like the idea of a
universal remote rather than having 4 or 5 remotes on my coffee table, how
cool would it be if Logitech put simple voice output into one of their
Harmony remotes.

Sieghard

I don't know how accessible it is, but TiVo already has an iPhone app. I
haven't used it much yet, but it seems to be accessible so far. How
would this app compare to what TiVo already has? I've also seen apps for
home theater systems from Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon and Onkyo. Again, I
don't know how accessible these apps are. These apps all talk to network
capable devices over the local network. I'm all for this effort. I just
wonder how it compares to what's already available.

RE: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-10-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard

The Bell app you are talking about that already controls viewing and PVR
recording; would that work with the Bell FIBE?

Sieghard

So, you would be happier if it worked via an IRtrans hub and controlled more
devices.

Our current design will not require additional IR support, because we will
be connecting directly to the cable boxes via your home's wifi / router.

Would having IR signal and requiring a dongle or trans hub be more practical
for you than a mobile app that talks to all cable boxes via your home's
wifi.

2012-10-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Why would you think that? Just playing with the current app from TiVo, I
can pull up the guide of currently or upcoming shows, browse the content
I have saved on my TiVo or iPhone and look at what I've asked TiVo to
record for me. It all looks accessible so far, but I've just started
playing with it, since I just got a TiVo the other day. From the
features I've read up on, I can get information on the show I'm
currently watching on TiVo, have the TiVo switch to play a show being
broadcast or that's already been recorded, set up shows or seasons of
shows to be recorded in the future and so on. I'm sure I may run into
inaccessible areas of the app, and there may not be features the app has
access to, but it looks like there's quite a bit I can do so far. I also
assume the app that's being developed here would give even greater
access and accessibility, and I would assume a greater commonality in
look and feel between different devices. What features of a TiVo are you
thinking couldn't be made VI friendly?

  Hi Kevin

We can get it to work with TiVo and SKy right now, working on BT cable and
Freeview.
Freeview will be the trickiest one in the UK which as I said is our first
market.

Do you currently own or use an IR device to connect your iphone to other
components in your house?
Would you purchase one if the mobile app needed it?

2012-09-30 Thread Robert Fenton
Hello:

I have another feature suggestion for your app. It would be really cool if we
could copy a recorded program from our pvr to the iPhone or iPad for later
viewing. For those of us who are totally blind, the large screen of a tv isn't
necessary but we may want to access tv content. The iPhone could act as a
separate viewing porthole like the ones advertised by Telus in Canada for their
optic tv. Does this make sense? Thanks for your help.

2012-09-30 Thread Amy Ruell
Hello Lou,

I live in Boston and run a 60-member group for blind users. If you need a
group of testers with varying abilities, vision loss, and demographics, let
me know. We do live demos and also work with developers to brainstorm about
making apps most useful.

If I can help in any way, fee free to contact me at presid...@vibug.org.

You can read more about our grou by going to

Hello VIPhone Group

We are building a new television remote for the VI and Blind in association
with the Royal National Institute for the Blind in London.

This remote will be a mobile application for the iPhone and iPad platforms.
We have just secured a partnership with TiVo and are now moving ahead with
the design.

I'm interested in knowing what features would be the most useful for the
members of this group.

Please tell me what would make the TV controller experience better for you.

I'll keep everyone updated on our progress. Our website will go live in
about a month with me more details.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Lou,

Don't know much about TV networks but I do know that the Bell FIBE comes to
me by fiber optic cable on my phone line. My modem is connected to the
phone line and my TV box is connected to the modem. I do have an Ethernet
jack and a usb connector on my box.

Would this work with what you have planned?

Viewing the list of programs and recording on the built-in PVR would be 2 of
my preferences.

Hi Sieghard

I fully understand that most people have older devices in their home.

We are building for the future and believe that most cable boxes either
already have or will have an Ethernet connection in the next few years.

I've heard a lot of requests for older devices during this conversation,
we've talked about it ourselves in the company, so I think we will develop
an IR solution as well.

Thanks

5 years old is not capable to be connected to my WiFi and I think there
would be a lot of people for whom your app would be more or less useless

Our current design will not require additional IR support, because we will

Would having IR signal and requiring a dongle or trans hub be more practical
for you than a mobile app that talks to all cable boxes via your home's

Re: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Victor Gouveia
I think another key component would be to be able to switch audio sources on
the fly, from standard audio to the alternative audio sources to ensure
descriptive video comes through on the SAP channel.

Otherwise, what's the point of having a special remote? LOL.

Re: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Robert Fenton
I assume that if this app is used, a sighted person could still use a standard
remote on the same cable box for which the iPhone is configured? Also, I would
like the ability to utilize more than one cable box with the same iPhone for
those of us who have more than one tv in our houses. I hope this helps.

2012-09-30 Thread Cristobal
Technical or conectivity aspects aside, as an end user, I think other than
the standard keypad and volume controls that would probably be the base of
any app remote solution, would be the ability to access other features that
appear on the television screen like program information, ratings, etc. Just
as importantly though would also be the ability to control what information
is provided. More isn't always better. Flicking back and forth between
channels, I don't necessarily need to know what's on channel 7 for the
umpteenth time if I'm going between two programs and am commercial hopping.
DVR interaction, television guides and other goodies which are now pretty
much a no go would also be nice.

This will be a Cable Box and Smart TV remote.

We will be using your home's local wifi / router set up and avoiding the IR
dongle for now.

So satellite receivers yes, smart tvs yes, dvd players and home theatres no
for version 1.0.

Re: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Lou
Hi Sieghard

I fully understand that most people have older devices in their home.
We are building for the future and believe that most cable boxes either already
have or will have an Ethernet connection in the next few years.

I've heard a lot of requests for older devices during this conversation, we've
talked about it ourselves in the company, so I think we will develop an IR
solution as well.

Thanks

Lou

RE: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,

Sieghard

So, you would be happier if it worked via an IRtrans hub and controlled more
devices.

Our current design will not require additional IR support, because we will
be connecting directly to the cable boxes via your home's wifi / router.

Would having IR signal and requiring a dongle or trans hub be more practical
for you than a mobile app that talks to all cable boxes via your home's
wifi.

Re: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi Lou,

I find this very interesting, partly because I've wanted something
like this for a while and partly because I'm making something that
does the exact same thing, although my solution would need much more
technical knowhow than the average user has in its current form.

I think the best root for you to take is to make a device that is able
to learn IR codes from any device that a user already has; this way
you're not limiting yourself to any particular device like a virgin
media box or a sky box. I've spent the past 2 or so years searching
for a Freeview box that is controllable over WIFI or has firmware that
is open enough that I can just write the functionality myself, but
apart from one very old PVR from topfield which has some community
based firmware modifications, there wasn't really anything that came
close to providing what I (And I think you) also want. Even if you did
manage to get one model working, there are so many different Freeview
boxes around in the UK that the chances are that potential customers
wouldn't have one of the boxes that your system works with.
A few months ago, a company called Tvonics came out with some talking
Freeview recorders in partnership with the RNIB. Unfortunately, just
over a month later, Tvonics went into administration and as far as I
know everyone at Tvonics was left unemployed. Because of this, it's
very unlikely that you will be able to control these boxes without
some form of device that sits in-between the box and an iPhone because
the team that writes the firmware for them simply doesn't exist
anymore. I mention this company because if you are working with the
RNIB, it would at least to me look quite strange if a RNIB approved
device such as yours was unable to work with the only widely used
accessible Freeview recorder on the market which was also created in
conjunction with the RNIB.

The EPG information is an interesting problem although when I started
developing my solution I thought it would be fairly easy to solve. Out
of interest, where are you getting the EPG data from? I am aware of
the radio times listings for Freeview that are available in XML, but
if EPG data for *every* Freeview channel is downloaded, this amounts
to hundreds of MB's of data that need to be searched when a user is
looking for a program for example. In my experience, this doesn't
happen quickly enough on commodity hardware for it to be a nice enough
experience for the end user. I'm toying with the idea of offloading
this functionality to a server which would store the listings using
MYSQL and then allow access to it through an API although I currently
don't have time to develop this.
One thing that I found out that you might not know (Apologies if you
do) is that not every Freeview box will have the same numbers for each
channel - E.G. channel 4 +1 will not always be number 13 on every box.
This makes it quite hard to create a program guide that changes the
channel, since for it to work correctly, the user needs to manually
specify the number that each channel uses on their own box.

Lastly, I'll end with a big question: Why are you targeting this at
blind people? There are lots of people who have multiple remotes that
want something like this; even people who have a universal remote such
as a Harmony will surely like the idea of being able to control their
devices from an iDevice; partly because you're getting rid of the
range problems associated with IR and replacing them with packets sent
over WIFI which obviously has a much longer range.
There are a few devices that already do this but it's very hard to
find them in the UK plus none of them are overly good value; how about
you make an amazing solution targeted towards the technical consumer
that just so happens to be accessible with voiceover?

I'd be really interested to speak with you off list about this; my
email address is replacewithfirstn...@benmr.com. Regardless of what
you do and how you do it, good luck!!

Ben.

I would like to easily program into the remote only the channels I watch most
frequently, for example the 10-15 channels among the many dozens or more
available for viewing. I also would like the option of having up to 5 channels

We are building a new television remote for the VI and Blind in association
with the Royal National Institute for the Blind in London.

This remote will be a mobile application for the iPhone and iPad platforms. We
have just secured a partnership with TiVo and are now moving ahead with the
design.

I'm interested in knowing what features would be the most useful for the
members of this group.

Please tell me what would make the TV controller experience better for you.

I'll keep everyone updated on our progress. Our website will go live in about

I have not had a chance to demo the new Tivo app, so I can't speak on it.

Our goal is to make a universal app that will work with any cable box, and
is being made specifically for the VI and blind market.

We are working to make sure VoiceOver works with all components of the
application. Where as sometimes with other devices you simply get the
"button" response.

One feature I would like to see is the ability of the remote to speak the
program listings. This would allow us to select a program to watch or record

Re: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't know how accessible it is, but TiVo already has an iPhone app. I
haven't used it much yet, but it seems to be accessible so far. How
would this app compare to what TiVo already has? I've also seen apps for
home theater systems from Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon and Onkyo. Again, I
don't know how accessible these apps are. These apps all talk to network
capable devices over the local network. I'm all for this effort. I just
wonder how it compares to what's already available.

If I understand you correctly, if you connect directly to the box in

This is likely a small number.
Besides, there are many other devices people might wish to control
from blu-ray players to surround sound receivers.

Our current design will not require additional IR support, because
we will be connecting directly to the cable boxes via your home's
wifi / router.

Would having IR signal and requiring a dongle or trans hub be more
practical for you than a mobile app that talks to all cable boxes
via your home's wifi.

As most appliances operated by remote control use IR to communicate;
you'd need some way for an IOS device to transmit IR.
I personally prefer a networked transmitter that does not attach to
any IOS device.

moving ahead with the design.

Re: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Louis-Joseph Auguste
This will be a Cable Box and Smart TV remote.
We will be using your home's local wifi / router set up and avoiding the IR
dongle for now.

So satellite receivers yes, smart tvs yes, dvd players and home theatres no
for version 1.0.

RE: Television Remote for Visually Impaired

2012-09-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

Will this be just a TV remote or will it control other devices such as home
theatre receivers, satellite receivers, DVD players etc.?

Also, will this utilize a IR dongle which needs to be plugged in to the
iPhone or will it work via a hub that is connected to the home network and
which will generate and send out the IR codes?

Regards,

Sieghard

Hello VIPhone Group

We are building a new television remote for the VI and Blind in association
with the Royal National Institute for the Blind in London.

This remote will be a mobile application for the iPhone and iPad platforms.
We have just secured a partnership with TiVo and are now moving ahead with
the design.

I'm interested in knowing what features would be the most useful for the
members of this group.

Please tell me what would make the TV controller experience better for you.

I'll keep everyone updated on our progress. Our website will go live in
about a month with me more details.

Look forward to hearing from you.
