Joe,

My last upgrade was from a 7 to a 13 mini. You have an iPhone 11 chip
inside the SE 2020. Personally, I would hold onto it until iOS
support ends, likely in 2025. People get value out of their iPhones
through longevity. They last a really long time. We are still in the
design cycle of flat edges. Remember, more than half of the benefit
of iPhones is iOS, its stability and all the features it offers. You
will get iOS 17 with or without the iPhone 15.

The iPhone X introduced Face Id and I think may have had the first OLED screen,
but it was gone a year later and I have a feeling it was one of the less
popular iPhones similar to the 5 and 7, 5S, 6S and 8 were the much better
upgrades. I thought the same thing about the Apple Watch, but I think we'll
upgrade from our series 5 to the new series 9 because I am not sure sure the
Apple Watch 10 next year will be such a major update.

Hi. I got a 13 Pro last summer during some significant events for me.
It was a nice upgrade from my 11, but when my upgrade opportunity comes up
again, I'm going to stick with the budget model (15, 16, or whatever it ends up
being in the future). Having the people and object detection modes was nice,
but I haven't used those at all. My circumstances have changed and I don't need
the more advanced Pro model for my daily use. I will also hang onto my Series 6
Apple Watch for another year. Next year will be the Series 10, and early
indications in the rumor mill are that the Series 10 should be a good milestone
for Apple, like the iPhone 10 was for the phones. I am anxiously awaiting the
iOS 17 release, to see what's new in general, VoiceOver in particular, and
enjoy the new software bells and whistles.

Best,

RE: today's Apple Event

2023-09-14 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Well, I have truly enjoyed reading this thread.

A special thanks to Sieghard for starting us off on this one.

I, too, was somewhat underwhelmed by this year's keynote. If the 15 models had
offered a new version of Touch ID,I would have been all in but, as it turns
out, no Touch ID, yet again.

While I like the idea of an action button, said button is not enough to compel
me to upgrade from my beloved 14.

The Apple keynote presentations, without the interaction of a live audience,
are uninspiring and extremely jejune.

While I think every one wants the world to be carbon neutral, Apple presents
its efforts as almost a filler; you know, as though they have to come up with
something to talk about between the presentations of the new devices. Just my
opinion of course.

I love the new Roadside assistant program and the fact that triple A members
will have this service included in the normal membership fee.

I laughed out loud at Richard's comment about the upgrades to the cameras.
Priceless, Richard, truly priceless.

While the keynotes leave much to be desired, in my opinion, I am convinced now,
more than ever before, that Apple does produce the best Smart devices on the
market.

I hope this finds you all doing well.

Mark

Re: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Julian
Hi Joe,

I am definitely planning to go for the 15 Pro. I currently have the SE 2022.
I'm looking forward to playing with lidar and goodies like that. I will miss
the convenience of touch ID, but what can we do, Apple has decided this is the
path forward to stick with Face ID.

I don't think it matters whether you end up buying a USB-C to Lightning adapter
or a set of USB-C Earpods especially since the Earpods if you use them as often
as I do have a limited life span so many who may decide to get an adapter then
may get a USB-Cset of Earpods when the current set breaks and then the adapter

Hi,

Regarding the excitement not being there has to do with so much being leaked
well before the announcement. As a result announcements are not as big as they
used to be since they leak so much out by the media.

Hi Sieghard,

Both 15 Pro models have the action button.

And I can't argue that getting new wired Earpods with the USB C connector would
be more economical, just less green.

There are a couple things I like about the iPhone 15 Pro.
1. You can use the action button for things like starting a recording or taking
a picture.
2. There is a USBC port with USBC speeds. It seems that you could connect a
USBC thumb drive and get USBC speeds.

RE: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
One person who couldn't care less about "all that green stuff" as you call it
is insignificant, but 100 Million or 1 Billion people not caring makes a big
difference.
If one person threw their empty plastic water bottle out of the window driving
along a highway it would be insignificant, but unfortunately thousands do it
and the ditches along our roads are full of garbage. I live in a smal town in
Northwestern British Columbia and every spring our local Christian Highschool
cleans up a stretch of highway, just a few miles, but it's unbelievable how
many garbage bags full of waste they collect each year and I just can't
understand anybody who throws out even a scrap of paper. And then there are the
moments when I walk along my typical route to work and kick a coffee cup
somebody threw out of their window or maybe they dropped it walking along and
it's 100 feet away from the public garbage bin. Humanity is far away from
reducing waste and living a more sustainable lifestyle and unless a vast
majority of people are prepared to do things which may cost extra or which may
inconvenience them a little, we will never get there.

I thought the exact same thing. But having watched the "big event" I can say
that my reaction was a huge yawn. I have zero interest in getting an apple
watch and couldn't care less about all the carbon neutral stuff. Of course I
care about the environment, but none of that green-washing is going to change
my mind about any of these new devices.

Sieghard.
I think 2 things are happening here. First, as others have pointed out, the
excitement factor just isn't there as it once was. Second, not as many people
seem to post on mailing lists as often. I seem to recall a similar sentiment
about no one talking about the keynote last year either. Times change, a lot of
this discussion can be found on social media.

But as with all things there will be cheaper and less expensive options in time
and you really only need such a cable if you use a wired connection to a

RE: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Alan, I absolutely agree that the camera performance plays a big role in their
design and marketing because that is what people want.
The switch to USB-C is of course only a good thing, if I bought a new phone I
wouldn't even have to bother about any cables because I have plenty of USB-C
cables, chargers and batteries and in any case, I use wireless charging 95% of
the time. I love the wired Earpods and they typically only last me a year or
so, therefore I would simply buy one or two of the new USB-C wired Earpods.
Anyways, despite of what I said earlier about being able to upgrade for a
pretty favourable price if I traded in my iPhone 13 Pro, I most likely won't
and instead we will probably get new Apple Watches. Initially I was thinking it
might be better to wait until the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch next
year, but then again if you think back to the iPhone X, it was a fairly
disappointing upgrade and they already have the new chips in this year's 9th
Gen watches so I doubt whether there will be another new chip next year which
will be that much better. If I had a 7th or 8th Gen watch maybe I'd think about
it, but ours are fifth Generation, bought in 2019, so after 4 years I think
we'd probably be quite happy with an upgrade.

Hi Sieghard,

I have to agree with Bill that it seemed obvious that most of the excitement at
least to the sighted world is all about the camera enhancements and features.
It almost sounds as if Apple's ultimate goal is to design a phone so that users
can take amazing photos whether they are intelligent enough to understand
anything about photography or heaven forbid even capable of using good language
skills. And I expect the lack of excitement is indicative of a product which is
reaching maturity as is the iPhone.

My favorite part of the event was the produced segment about Apple's
environmental concerns and efforts featuring Octavia Spencer as Mother Nature.
But then, that was more of a mini movie than a product announcement. I do
appreciate the efforts Apple is making to be green and carbon neutral but I
note that little has been said about all the cables and wired devices with
lightning connectors that won't work with the new phones and their USB C ports.
But that change wasn't a decision Apple made unilaterally or even voluntarily.
I will note that the Apple Store does now offer a new adapter with lightning
female and USB C male for those needing to use their wired lightning Earpods
and other wired devices. I'll also note that this adapter costs $29 which is a
big increase from the 3.5mm to lightning adapter introduced a few years back
when they got rid of the headphone jack. That adapter was $9.95 as I recall.

I will be in no hurry to move from my iPhone 13 Mini to one of the iPhones 15
or later.

RE: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are able to transfer at faster speeds, it was
mentioned during the keynote and I wouldn't be surprised that any speed
reduction is software based and if that is true then Apple could decide at any
time to remove that bottleneck.
As I said before, for me the regular phones don't hold much appeal any more,
it's the Pro phones where you really get the best features if you like to have
them and if money is a concern then you are better of looking for a good deal
on an iPhone 14 Pro rather than to get a regular iPhone 15.

With all of the filtering done beforehand, these events are just not that
exciting/surprising anymore. Too yes overpriced, like who would want to spend
out of pocket almost 2mxn for an iPhone 15, when they're cheaper options
out there? These newer iPhones would be afordable via plans from the carrier,
in which they help you by absorbing the cost of the device, via your monthly
billings. Yes the 15 with its USB-C is tempting, but I was reading yesterday on
MacRumors that even though these will be USBC, they'll charge at the speed of
lightning! So what's the fuss about then using a newer standard port, but with
the old one's speeds?

Or, were you being sarcastic?

I feel that there are not a lot of messages on the releases, like there once

grand, I don't think.

I am actually trying to decide if I want to upgrade my phone, or just replace

bit.

I have the 12 mini.

Thank you,

Star Gazer,

If your headphones have a lightning connector such as my wired Apple Earpods,
you'll need to acquire one of the new lightning to USB C adapters now available
at the Apple Store for $29. If your headphones have a standard 3.5mm connector,
I'm sure numerous adapters are available at Amazon to allow connection of those
to USB C.

RE: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As for actually buying a new phone that all depends on what you have now. In
the last few years I usually purchased last year's Pro phone because I find
more and more that you end up getting a better phone for the same or even less
money. Consider last year's iPhone 14 and the 2021 iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 14
last year did not get the A16 processor, only the 14 Pro and Pro Max got the
A16 and again this year only the 15 Pro and Pro Max get the A17 chip. Last
year's iPhone 14 still had the A15 chip which is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro
and this year's iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have the A16 chip, same as what the
iPhone 14 Pro had last year.
I haven't checked in detail if there is a change regarding LiDAR, it used to be
that only Pro phones had the LiDAR sensor so this means if you bought an iPhone
14 or 14 Plus last year you would get a phone with the same chip as an iPhone
13 Pro, but you wouldn't have LiDAR whereas the iPhone 13 Pro has LiDAR which
allows for features like door detection and so on.
We bought our iPhone 13 Pro when during
Cyber Monday last year my carrier, Telus in Canada, offered them for $18 a
month for 2 years with no downpayment and I think the buy-out price after two
years if we wanted to keep the phones is $390. This means I will pay $432 over
two years and then if I buy out the phone for $390 I would have paid a total of
$822 for an iPhone 13 Pro. Keep in mind this is in Canadian Dollars and we have
the 256 Gb model which I believe was $1,129 here in Canada so getting it for
$300 less is not too bad of a deal.
Right now I checked and if I used the Apple trade-in program, they would give
me $615 Canadian for my iPhone 13 Pro and I'd almost may have to consider it
because if I pay out the balance of what I owe it means I pay $822 and get $615
so the phone would have cost me $207. By the time I would get my new iPhone I
would have had my iPhone 13 Pro for 10 months so essentially it would have cost
me $20 a months and my purchase price for an iPhone 15 Pro 128 Gb which is
plenty big enough for my purposes would be $834 after the trade in, here in
Canada the full purchase price is $1,449. I would then have a phone with the
new A17 chip which uses the new 3 Nanometer architecture and has USB-C and I
assume I'd probably be quite happy with that phone for the next 3-4 years.
But we are also thinking of new Apple Watches since we have the Apple Watch 5th
Gen which is now 4 years old so I think upgrading to a 9th Gen Apple Watch with
the new chip would be most likely a bigger upgrade for us than upgrading from
an iPhone 13 Pro to a 15 Pro; I also like the idea of the new gestures like
pressing 2 fingers together for answering a call etc. The 45mm Aluminum Watch
with Cellular I think was $769 here in Canada and I assume we could still get
$200 or $250 for our Apple Watch 5. Just have to run all the numbers and see
what we want to do; if we do only 1 device then definitely the watch this year,
also planning a trip to the Philippines to visit my wife's family and for our
10th anniversary since we got married there so we'll see.

If your headphones have a lightning connector such as my wired Apple Earpods,
you'll need to acquire one of the new lightning to USB C adapters now available

I'm sure numerous adapters are available at Amazon to allow connection of those

There are already USB-C headphones out there since other manufacturers dropped
the audio jack and didn’t use the proprietary Lightning connector. I think I’ve
also read that Apple, and I’m sure others, have a Lightning to USB-C adapter.

RE: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Since we're tossing out our opinions here, I do care about the work Apple and
others are doing with carbon footprints and green initiatives. There's only so
much individuals can do, so companies like Apple need to be a big part of the
solution. Since this feels a little off topic to me, I won't espouse my
feelings on our responsibilities as custodians of our planets and the legacy we
leave to our children.

To get USB 3 speeds, I believe a different, more expensive cable is required. But I don't use a Mac, am unfamiliar with the speed differences between USB 2 and 3, so am not in a position to comment further. A standard USB C cable can certainly be used with the iPhone 15 models since they have the standard sized USB C port, but another cable is needed with the Pro models to get maximum transfer speed. Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 13, 2023, at 10:06 AM, Matt White wrote:It sounds like only USB-C is involved with this connection, so maybe a standard USB-C cable will do the trick; I guess we’ll find out in a week or soSent from my iPhoneOn Sep 13, 2023, at 10:39, Alan Lemly wrote:Hi Ryan, I noted they mentioned that an optional cable would be needed to get maximum speeds when transferring from the 15 Pro models to connected supported devices. Re: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Kimberly Gardner
I thought the exact same thing. But having watched the "big event" I
can say that my reaction was a huge yawn. I have zero interest in
getting an apple watch and couldn't care less about all the carbon
neutral stuff. Of course I care about the environment, but none of
that green-washing is going to change my mind about any of these new
devices.

2023-09-13 Thread Scott Davert
Sieghard.
I think 2 things are happening here. First, as others have pointed
out, the excitement factor just isn't there as it once was. Second,
not as many people seem to post on mailing lists as often. I seem to
recall a similar sentiment about no one talking about the keynote last
year either. Times change, a lot of this discussion can be found on
social media.

Re: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Sieghard, I have to agree with Bill that it seemed obvious that most of the excitement at least to the sighted world is all about the camera enhancements and features. It almost sounds as if Apple's ultimate goal is to design a phone so that users can take amazing photos whether they are intelligent enough to understand anything about photography or heaven forbid even capable of using good language skills. And I expect the lack of excitement is indicative of a product which is reaching maturity as is the iPhone. My favorite part of the event was the produced segment about Apple's environmental concerns and efforts featuring Octavia Spencer as Mother Nature. But then, that was more of a mini movie than a product announcement. I do appreciate the efforts Apple is making to be green and carbon neutral but I note that little has been said about all the cables and wired devices with lightning connectors that won't work with the new phones and their USB C ports. But that change wasn't a decision Apple made unilaterally or even voluntarily. I will note that the Apple Store does now offer a new adapter with lightning female and USB C male for those needing to use their wired lightning Earpods and other wired devices. I'll also note that this adapter costs $29 which is a big increase from the 3.5mm to lightning adapter introduced a few years back when they got rid of the headphone jack. That adapter was $9.95 as I recall. I will be in no hurry to move from my iPhone 13 Mini to one of the iPhones 15 or later. Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 13, 2023, at 2:13 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

Re: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Gerardo Corripio
With all of the filtering done beforehand, these events are just not that exciting/surprising anymore. Too yes overpriced, like who would want to spend out of pocket almost 2mxn for an iPhone 15, when they're cheaper options out there? These newer iPhones would be afordable via plans from the carrier, in which they help you by absorbing the cost of the device, via your monthly billings. Yes the 15 with its USB-C is tempting, but I was reading yesterday on MacRumors that even though these will be USBC, they'll charge at the speed of lightning! So what's the fuss about then using a newer standard port, but with the old one's speeds?GeraEnviado desde mi iPhone SE (2nd Generation) de TelcelEl 13 sep 2023, a la(s) 1:33 a.m., Marco Curralejo escribió:Overpriced and nothing really that exciting. Seems to be a yearly occurrence.  From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Terri StimmelSent: Wednesday, September 13, 2023 3:32 AMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: Re: today's Apple Event Hello Sieghard, and list. Are you really all that surprised?Or, were you being sarcastic? I feel that there are not a lot of messages on the releases, like there once was, because really not much has changed. There are a couple things I like about the iPhone 15 Pro.1. You can use the action button for things like starting a recording or taking a picture.2.  There is a USBC port with USBC speeds.  It seems that you could connect a USBC thumb drive and get USBC speeds.Ryan MannCertified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialistrmann0...@gmail.com386-383-5175On Sep 13, 2023, at 4:58 AM, Bill Gallik wrote:Sieghard et al,After listening to the event it’s very clear that much of the hubbub is all about visually oriented enhancements and new features.  I’m trying to decide if I’d prefer to get an iPhone 15 or get the iPhone 14 instead.  The only benefit I surmise from the 15 is the higher resolution camera to hopefully improve OCR processing.  But I have to wonder just how much more clear a photo of a document would help that.

Re: today's Apple Event

2023-09-13 Thread Lisa Belville
Hi, Bill.  I just upgraded from a 12 Pro to a 14 Pro.  I read the rumors
about the new iPhones and decided the 14 Pro would be enough of an
improvement from my old phone.

It's faster, naturally, and the updated LiDar is neat, but otherwise, it
wasn't a a huge step up from the 12 Pro phone.

The only major difference with the 15 models would be no lightening
cable.  Even with the 14 Pro, the cable has a lightening tip at one end
and a USB-C tip at the other end.  I had to get a charging brick for it
at Verizon because the older ones with the larger USB ports wouldn't work.

Oh, and that was the other deal breaker. . . I got a substantial amount
for trading in my old phone, so my current bill is reduced by about $30
a month.

If you are going pre-paid, it won't matter, but it is something to add
to the mix.

2023-09-13 Thread Terri Stimmel

Hello Sieghard, and list.

Are you really all that surprised?

Or, were you being sarcastic?

I feel that there are not a lot of messages on the releases, like there
once was, because really not much has changed. Some changes, certainly.
But nothing grand, I don't think.

I am actually trying to decide if I want to upgrade my phone, or just
replace it's battery. The battery needs to be replaced. But I like this
phone quite a bit.

I have the 12 mini.

Thank you,

Terri

And where are the days when at this time of the evening on the day of
a major Apple Event I would find at least 150 or 200 messages from the
Viphone list where people discuss the latest announcement? I am really
surprised that when I came home tonight there was not a single one!
