VO volume in Apple TV
Hi all, since updating to TV17 I have noticed the VO volume is quite soft. If increase the volume it makes the TV volume very loud. I can’t seem to get the volume to work separately to the TV like on the phone. Any ideas? Thanks Max. -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. VO Volume Stops At 65%
Hi all, A few days ago, I ran into the 35% VO volume bug on my iPhone 5S. I did a reset of my settings after which I went through my various settings and set them back to their values from before the settings reset. Everything worked well after the reset. I was able to set my VO volume as high as 90%. Last night I was listening to TuneIn Radio Pro and I made some volume adjustments using the on-screen volume control. I tried to adjust the VO volume relative to the radio volume but was unable to do so. The volume setting on the rotor would not let me set the VO volume above 65%. Does anyone know what might be going on and possibly suggest a solution? I really don't want to go through the whole settings reset process again just to get things back to normal again. Thanks. Hi, someone can correct me if I am wrong. But I think this is a bug you're going to have to deal with. It is not fixed as far as I know. Apple is aware of it. But so far they haven't fixed it. Re: VO Volume
Hi, Yeah, that's a bug that introduced in the first release of IOS 7. It's still around in IOS 7.0.4. If you're having this problem, go into Settings, then General, and reset all settings. You won't lose data, but you'll have to reconfigure a few things. Once that's done, take volume out of the rotor. Hope this helps. RE: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Hi Katey, While I've never experienced this issue on my 5 S, I know several people who have. A friend of mine and I were able to resolve his problem by doing the following: Oh, I almost forgot. Please be sure to backup your phone before you begin. I strongly suggest that you backup your device to iTunes rather than to the cloud--especially in this kind of situation. 1. Make sure your device is not connected to your computer. 2. From the Settings menu, select General. 3. Select Reset. 4. Select Reset All Settings. Please note that this is a non-destructive reset. It will not erase any of your media content or apps. It will, however, reset many system settings including VoiceOver configuration. 5. Once the reset is complete, make sure that the Volume option is not active in the VoiceOver Rotor. Never, never attempt to adjust volume via the Rotor until this bug is resolved. 6. From the Settings menu, select Sounds. 7. Make certain that the change with option is set to off. Now you should be able to adjust VoiceOver independently of the ringer volume. Experiment with this to make sure you're up and running. If you're feeling lucky: 8. Attach your phone to the computer and use iTunes to restore from your latest backup. If all goes well, restoring your phone will not impact VoiceOver to the extent that it engages the bug. Re: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Mark, Thanks for the tip. I may wind up trying that. But If I sync my phone with my mac and then reset it after syncing it, wont' the volume come back in the rotor or the volume which it was set at be there? What I was thinking of doing was exactly what you said, going to settings general reset and the first option reset all settings. I know that all my accessibility settings as well as my battery saving tips which I put in my 4s will be gone (and all papers as well). I can manually go back and reset them -- I still have my 4s and thus I could easily go through the menus and put back the ones I want-- minus the volume in the rotor. I guess what I want to know is this a software or hardware bug? Thanks again, Katey A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart. Re: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Here's a copy of the email I sent to apple Good Morning/Afternoon, My name is Catherine Glass and I've been using an iPhone since the 3GS came out with accessibility, I had a 3GS, 4s and now a 5s. Unfortunately, I write today to report a bug which I, and many other blind/visually impaired VoiceOver users seem to be having with our brand new 5s units. This bug involved the VO volume in the rotor. I have had this selected on my 4s and it worked as expected, raising my VO volume independently of the system sounds from 1% to 100%. However, after receiving my brand new 5s this weekend, and restoring it from a backup of my 4s, the volume when I flick up is stuck at 45%. While I can raise and lower the volume using the volume buttons on the side, the system sounds -- ringers and alerts are rather loud. If us lower the volume of sounds the VO voice gets way too low. I am a person who has some usable vision and I can see that when I press the volume up button to raise the VO volume the little symbol which tells how high the volume is almost to the top and still VO voice is somewhat low in volume. This is not the case with my 4s. I can make the system sounds rather loud and have VO speak softly. If I put VO volume in my rotor it’s stuck at 45%. What should I do to fix this issue? I have a brand new iPhone 64 Gig, silver on the ATT network. I got this through the ATT store. Any information you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Catherin, do you have change with buttons turned on in settings? That would explained that volume change. I have it turned off and I don't have the volume included in the rotor because I want my phone to ring at it's maximum according to the master/over all volume. --- Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2013! RE: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Hi Katey, I strongly suspect that the glitch is one that is located in the software. If you don't mind putting all your settings back again, definitely skip step 8. I’m not certain if restoring the phone will put VO back in the rotor. If it does, then just remove it. Restoring the phone may set the volume level to its previous setting but it should not expose the glitch. Re: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
I did the following on my iPhone 5 and it worked. This does not mean it will work on the 5S, which I do not have. Remove volume from the rotor. Be somewhere where a two-finger flick up will cause VO to do a lot of reading. Perform the two-finger flick up and, whilst VO is talking, press the volume down button until no sound is heard. Now, do another two-finger flick up. Though it cannot be heard, VO will start reading the screen again, the same way, and at the same speed. Press the volume up button rapidly until VO reaches its maximum volume. From this point, do not press the volume buttons when VO is speaking. Hello, Yes VO volume will adjust with the volume buttons, but when I lower it using the buttons my VO ring volume decreases and I do have adjust with side volume turned to off and so the VO voice and the allerts are both low despite the slider telling me the ringer volume is 84%. It didn't work like this on my 4s. When the slider was at a high volume, the system and allert sounds were loud and VO spoke softly. Re: VO volume on iPhone 5s after updating from 4s
Please note: I did not say that the feature was working properly. I specifically stated the method I used to get VO to go above 35%. The fact is, all of the iPhone's volumes will go down to 0. Then, all of VO's volumes will come back up, bringing VO above 35% with the master volume. After this point, VO should remain in-sync with the master volume. This is merely a work-around until Apple repairs the volume issue for VO. RE: Weird issue with VO Volume
Alan, thanks for this very helpful post. I wonder if you might clarify something for me. I set my Change with Buttons setting to off as you described below and also set my overall volume for everything to 100%. Can you confirm that if I now use my volume buttons on the side to change the volume for whatever I'm doing that this volume will apply for all phone audio whether it be phone calls, music playing, VO, or whatever? What if I use the rotor volume control to change VO volume in some app. Will that new volume setting be reflected everywhere in the phone? Thanks for clarifying this for me. This means that it's possible that focus is on something else at the time when you were adjusting the volume and the level got changed. The first year I had my iPhone this drove me crazy with the volume changing and once or twice I had to do a reset to get voice over back. When change with buttons is turned off, you set an over all volume for every thing. I have mine set to 1 hundred percent. That doesn't mean though that your phone is always at full volume. It just means that all the elements are at 1 hundred percent which is where you want them to be. Now, the only thing the buttons on the side of your phone do is to adjust the master volume. So if you turn the volume down, that's all that happens is the master volume goes down but if you get a phone call, the volume will be where you set at with the master volume and no more screw-ups with volume changes on one part of your phone and not on another. Don't take my word for it, see how it works for you. It's easy enough to turn it back. Here's how to do it. 1 Open Settings. 2 Flick right with 1 finger to get to sounds and single-finger double tap. 3 Flick right to get to change with buttons Do a single finger double tap to toggle the button from on to off. Flick left to get to the sound volume setting and single finger double tap. Now flick 1 finger up or down to adjust the master volume setting. I have it set to 1 hundred percent. Now done and hit the back button to exit the settings. You won't have any more accidental volume changes. I've had my phone this way now for about a year and wouldn't turn on change with buttons back on again even on a bet. To easy to get yourself in trouble accidentally. Re: Weird issue with VO Volume
Lisa, most blind people have change with buttons turned on. RE: Setting VO volume relative to main sound setting
Hi Keith, You have 2 options to change Voiceover. You can do something which makes Voiceover talk and while it is talking adjust the volume up or down with the volume keys. I usually do this by going to my Home Screen, I touch the top left icon and then do a 2-finger swipe down which makes Voiceover start to read all the app icons on my home screen. The second method is to add volume to the Rotor in the Rotor Settings under Accessibility. Then you can turn the rotor to volume and flick up or down with a single finger to raise or lower the volume in 10% increments. Regina's method will work for SIRI, but it won't do anything to VO volume. Re: raising VO volume when on a phone call
I seriously recommend trying headphones on calls where you will be interacting with a automated response system. It is in my experience, far far less frustrating than trying to do it without them. Garth On 16/05/2012, at 2:36 PM, Mary Otten wrote: I'm fine with the vo volume on speaker phone. raising VO volume when on a phone call
I am quite sure this has been discussed. I seem to remember that somebody suggested having volume in your rotor settings which I do, and then adjusting that up when on a call so as to raise the level of vo as compared with the level of the foice coming through the ear piece of the IPhone 4S. But my VO is so low I can literally hear nothing whatsoever when I run my finger over the screen when on a call using the phone app or skype. This also means I can't find the earpiece button in order to tap it to access the speaker button when on skype. Taking the phone away from my ear acts very eratically in terms of sending the call to speaker. It is often reather slow to react. So how might I raise the VO level to where I can at least here it so as to dial keypad numbers or find the earpiece button for skype? Thanks. Re: raising VO volume when on a phone call
Yep, the rotor in a call thing doesn't change the proportion on a 4S. I'm starting to become a believer in the idea that different batches have different issues because I had my first 4S replaced with the current one in April because the volume buttons got sensitive to even the vibration alert. The first one had a nice mix of VO and call audio, not as loud of volume on the speaker phone, and Siri dipped the VO audio when engaged. This one has the low VO level on calls, it significantly increases the level for Siri, and the speaker phone is about where it should be. I think this one goes through battery faster, but I'm not 100 percent certain. I noticed the other day that the pocket with the phone in heated up more, where the one Apple now has back didn't noticeably ever heat up. - Original Message - From: Ricardo Walker rwalker...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2012 9:35 PM Subject: Re: raising VO volume when on a phone call Hi, If your using a 4S, there is really nothing you can do short of using headphones. Re: raising VO volume when on a phone call
To add to this and make it possibly even less clear and something else that one's mileage may vary is that I sware that when I move the speaker volume up and down in some way on a call, the relative VO volume does end up increasing. Not in a predictable way though and not that it increases by moving the speaker volume up necessarily, but just in the process somewhere along the line it relatively increases. Kinda strange. The volume while on a call is just very low. Even with VO volume raised to 100% Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On May 15, 2012, at 9:48 PM, Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com wrote: I am quite sure this has been discussed.
But if I have vo in the rotor so I can set it there, will vlicking up to 100% vo volume affect just vo and not the rest of the sound? Of course, the problem is, mostly I don't want vo up to 100%, and I sure don't want all sound up that loud.
