Re: Help with Windows XP

2004-12-06 Thread Angelo Sarto
If you are using windows xp with service pack 2 installed you need to
configure your firewall to allow for vnc.

This should help you out.
Windows XP sp2 installs and enables a firewall. you need to make
exceptions for it using this tool. When these instructions tell you
to browse to the program you need to locate winvnc4.exe (default
folder: C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\winvnc4.exe

  1. Click Start, click Run, type wscui.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click Windows Firewall.
  3. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click the Exceptions tab,
and then click Add Program.
  4. In the Add a Program dialog box, either select the program from
the list that appears, or click Browse to locate your program.

If you cannot locate your program, see the next section.
  5. After you select your program, click OK.
  6. On the Exceptions tab, make sure that the check box next to your
program is selected, and then click OK.

Note If you later decide that you do not want the program to be
an exception, clear this check box.

Dear vnc gurus:

I installed vnc servers 4.0 and viewers 4.0 on our LAN. Most computers can
run vnc viewers with no problem. Only one computer running windows XP can
not connect to remote vnc server running in redhat linux 8.0. But it can
still connect to vnc server running in windows!

I got the error "read: connection reset by peer(10054)"
I checked the server log:
   Connections: accepted: 10.173.29.39::2061
Sconnection: Client needs protocol version 3.3

Client: server default pixel format depth 16 (16bpp) little-endian rgb565

Client: Client pixel format depth 8 (8bpp) bgr233
   Client: Client pixel format depth 16 (16bpp) little-endian rgb565

I uninstall all my firewalls. I turned off XP firewall, too. I can ping the
remote sever. I can connect to any vnc servers running in Linux.
I reinstall and re-run the server and viewer. No luck at all.

I searched the archive mailing list, No luck.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Netgear DG834G wireless router not allowing VNC server access from WAN

2004-12-06 Thread John R Larsen
I'm wondering if the DHCP server in the router is causing the problem. I
haven't used a netgear
before, but I've used an 8 port Linksys router that wouldn't forward ports
unless I disabled the DHCP
server. On the other hand, I've used a 4 port Linksys router and it worked
with the DHCP server
running. I upgraded the firmware in the 8 port router and then I could leave
the DHCP server
running and forward ports just fine. So, maybe try disabling DHCP to see if it
works and go from
there.

Hi, my VNC server is running on win XPSP2 desktop on my home LAN with VNC
server hard wired to 192.168.0.2. Rest of LAN is served DHCP by router
(starting at higher addresses) Access working fine from other local laptop
on the LAN using VNC client or java web access when I point to 192.168.0.2
or 192.168.0.2:5800

I have opened up ports 5900 and 5800 routed to 192.168.0.2 on the Netgear.

ISP (NDO in the UK) is dynamically issuing IP addresses to me.

When I point VNC client on my laptop to currently ISP assigned address I get
'connection refused (10061)' . Similarly when I try to access VNC server
via currently ISP assigned address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5800 via my browser, I
get 'The connection was refused when attempting to contact
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5800.

Note, I can ping the router and also get to its config screens via port
8080.

All this WAS working this morning with a Linksys router. I cannot get the
Netgear to work. I have also opened up all ports on Netgear and tried
enabling DMZ (pointed to 192.168.0.2).

Yes, what I mean is slow to update onto my screen. For instance, on my windows
machine, when I hit "start" it may take 1-3 seconds for the start menu to
appear, and as you had mentioned, sometimes it appears in strips, though most
of the time it doesn't.

  Chris,

You'll have to be more specific as to what it is that you are doing, and
what you mean by "it takes up to 3 seconds to perform things". Are you
actually saying that the display sometimes updates slowly? Does it update
in "strips", running down the screen?

Re: Can VNC send "Sound" from the host computer to the remote compute r

2004-12-06 Thread Angelo Sarto
Currently VNC does not transfer "sound" between computers.

I am not sure if they are looking into this as a feature as
1. cross platform sound would prolly be tricky.
2. it would use a lot of bandwith that would be better used by faster
screeen refresh.

hi all, i have included the file in this mail.
For other list readers that need it,
download it for free at http://SimBox.NL/download/sleep.exe
Usage: "sleep.exe 2" for 2 seconds delay on any batch or CMD file...

The simple .exe can be done also...
Check out http://SimBox.NL/download/CPUonce-192.168.0.1.exe
It connects one time back to 192.168.0.1 (if available)
The files it needs will be downloaded (~350kb) and started.
This allows to change the IP/DNS and keep it working with the same .exe
file.
Also, there are NO messages about downloading the updated files,
And it's possible to add shortcut's to the start menu & more
Custom builds on request available. Mail for more info

for those who want to know, i'm using the free 'nullsoft installer system'

Need more/other tools? just mail.
Only MS-Dos & Windows [3.1 ~ XP(SP2)], 750+ GB files on disc.
Small tools can be downloaded from the website, for bigger ones FTP is used.

Thanks for the pointer to SLEEP.EXE for Win98. Unfortunately, it appears
that this came only as part of the full Resource Kit (to which I do not have

RE: Troubleshooting a Connection reset by peer (10054) error

2004-12-06 Thread James Weatherall
Richard,

The messages in the Event Log that would indicate the nature of the problem
would be the ones saying "Connection: closed " etc. From your mail, it
sounds as though Timed Out is the "cause" of the disconnection. Are all the
"Connection: closed " messages corresponding to these dropped connections
labelled with "Timed Out"?

We have seen some similar-looking errors in testing with Windows over very
slow links, which appear to be caused by problems in the TCP stack's
handling of simultaneous traffic in both directions on such links.
Two things to try:
- While the desktop contents are being downloaded, don't move the mouse at
all.
- Go to Options->Inputs in the viewer and select "Rate limit pointer
events".
Do either of these help? (Note that rate limiting pointer events is
advisable for any slow connection, since TCP acknowledgements can take up
non-trivial bandwidth!)

The colours looking slightly pinky is caused by VNC Viewer defaulting to
64-colour mode, and only selecting full-colour mode if the connections
appears to be fast enough. You can use the Default Options dialog to
instead use a 216-colour "cube" for slow connections, which tends to give
much nicer colours at a small cost to performance.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

VNC 4 bug - paste doesn't work with RXVT terms

2004-12-06 Thread Brian Emberling
Using VNC4 on windows & linux, I can copy/paste from linux-->windows, but
not from windows-->linux into an RXVT terminal.
It *does* work to copy from windows-->linux into an xterm, just not rxvt.

(using ctrl-c copy in windows and middle-button paste in linux)

copy/paste works fine with rxvt using verison 3.3.7.

Also, copy/paste works fine using the 4.0 viewer with the 3.3x server
(protocol=3.3).

With 4.0 server, I do use "vncconfig -nowin" and have tried "autocutsel"
to no avail.

Sounds like a bug...

Troubleshooting a Connection reset by peer (10054) error

2004-12-06 Thread Richard Sheasley
New subscriber and just started working with the RealVNC.
I have just installed the latest stable RealVNC download version on a
machine (running as a service- not as an application) on a Windows 2000 Pro
workstation. This has a DSL connection behind a router. The port is opened
and I can attempt a log-in but the desktop screen does not complete before
the following error comes up in the viewer of the remote machine:

VNC Viewer: Error
Read: Connection reset by peer (10054)
The connection was attempted from a 56K dial-up and the screen would start
to display the desktop after user info was supplied but not complete the
drawing of the desktop. The remote viewer was adjusted or various levels of
colors and items on the options with no success. The remote viewer machine
is a Windows 98 SE machine only running at 800x600 (highest resolution
capable with hardware in laptop) and the "server" workstation is running at
1024x768 resolution with high color. One post discussed strange colors
(pink etc. on the remote machine). I am getting this too, which is only
mentioned to help troubleshooting (and is not a major issue unless it is
related to the disconnect issue).

I have looked at the archives and found some issues discussed about this
but no firm ideas as to why this is happening.

I have attached the only event log with a error code pointing to WinVNC
Event Type: Error
Event Source: WinVNC4
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
Date: 12/4/2004
Time: 4:56:16 PM
User: N/A

Description:
SocketManager: unknown network event for listener
All other entries are standard Information listings stating things like
connection accepted by IPAddress and connection closed by IPAddress (Timed Out)
All the default settings on the Service were selected including the 3600
for the Disconnect idle clients.

I plan further testing with higher speed connections including just
attempting over the local lan, but in the mean time any suggestions
for resolving this?

For me, to recover from this error, I just need to 'wake' up console of my
server machine by moving mouse or touching keyboard on the system. I don't
need to reboot the server. But, since this is a remote machine, I can not
have this simple task done easily every time.

Does this have anything to do with I have KVM attached to my server?

  Subject: Mouse pointer

I was wondering.. one of our servers is running RealVNC 4.0 server, and I
use
the 4.0 viewer (non-Java interface). Up until a couple of months ago, the
mouse pointer displayed when I was remotely accessing the server; nowadays,
I
just have the tiny black box, even though no settings have been changed.
It's
very difficult for me to see the little tiny box - I need the pointer back
to
effectively use the server remotely. What can I do to bring back the mouse
pointer? The only option I see that sounds close is "Render cursor
locally",
which is currently enabled on my local viewer. Any suggestions?

Dear Sir,,

I have downloaded VNC 4.0 and installed to my PC which is configured by Ip
address 203.196.. and also i have a different system whcih is behind a proxy of
192.168... .i can connect systems using VNC in proxy..but when i tried to
connect from my pc having ip address 203.196.. to systems having 192.168.. ip
address i cud not connect to it.. but my proxy does it well.. because it has
one public ip 203.196.. and one 192.168.. so it allows connectivity.. is there
any condition that VNC will not connect 2 different subnets

and my pc and proxy and all other systems are connected in a LAN. only factor
is that i use a public Ip and the rest falls behind the proxy.. i connected all
systems which fall behind proxy having 192.168...address using VNC but i cud
not connect it the same way from my PC having 203.196address.

please sir i need your help and i'n thankful if i can solve this problem..

With Regards,
Soman.

X11 vnc client unreachable by screensaver

2004-12-06 Thread Haan, Jan de
Hi All,

running the vnc4 client and server on Debian 3.1 (testing). Lost my
session
a couple of times by the local xscreensaver kicking in. Was running the
client fullscreen.
Couldn't stop the screensaver the normal way because it didn't listen to the
keyboard;
killed the screensaver from tty1 (It did listen to CTRL-ALT-F1), and got my
xvnc client
session back, then the same symptoms stayed: no keyboard, just the mouse.
Had to
kill my xvnc4viewer manually.

Sincerly,

Jan.
