Received an email this morning with an attachment NAME.scr Strange thing is that I can not find the email to which the document was attached in my IN box. Is this a new virus? No, it is not a new virus. It is an old virus, that has been around for a bit over a year now. Anything that has a: .scr .bat .pif suffix is a Klez virus. I get a few of them each week. They only affect Windows PCs. I've got a couple of hundred of them these days. I used to trash them, but these days I keep them. When people are pondering whether to buy a Mac or a PC, I show them all the viruses that are floating around, explain that Macs aren't affected, and the person ends up buying a Mac. Re: Beware the Jaguar
Hi... Some more updates based on observations at the weekend: Disk Utility now lets you verify or repair privileges on the boot disk (so you don't need Apple's Privilege Repair utility). Of course this is only on the boot disk, so if you've hosed your boot disk by setting the privileges inappropriately, you're still doomed to have to go through resetting everything by hand :) The Sound Preferences panel now has sound in and out panes. Re: Strange email-attachment - virus
Not all .scr files are a virus they can also be one of the following four .Fax Program: FAXVIEW .Screen Saver Program: MS WINDOWS .Screen Snapshot (various programs) .Script The reason a lot of them can be a virus is that they can be a written script that someone has written as a virus. It always come down to the old adage if you do not know the source don't open the file or just to be safe, as some people do not know that they are sending you a virus, always check using your virus checker first. Jagwire and Sound Levels
I installed Jagwire on my 700MHz 14 inch iBook on Saturday (and the 23/8/02 Security Update). Anyone else noticed that the sound levels in Jagwire are lower than under 10.1.4? In other words...the settings must higher under Jagwire to get the same speaker volume output than under 10.1.4. NikonView 5 OS X.2
Hello Is anyone else running NikonView 5 (v5.1.1) with OS X.2? NikonView, on my Powerbook G4/667, is not automatically recognising my camera when connected any longer, either via CF PCMCIA card of USB cable. I have checked the preferences of NikonView and all is ok and I have deactivated iPhoto's auto start/load. I'm trying to establish whether it's particular to my setup/installation or if it's a recognised problem. I did a complete clean installation of OS X.2 and subsequently have re-installed all of my software including NikonView. I have searched the web without luck. Feedback appreciated. Have fun, Shay Thanks Shay That did initiate the startup of NikonView, thank you. However, I still can't get the transfer to activate. In fact, it won't allow me even to do it manually (cmd T), it's greyed out. I have re-check the pref's of NikonView again, all appears to be correct. What else am I missing? Also, does that version of NikonView specify that it's meant to work with OS X 10.2? You may have to wait for an update. Thanks, Shay The answer to both questions is no. While the camera is recognised by the computer (eg: the CF card shows up in the finder), Apple System Profiler does not show it connected to the USB port, as it should. The images are there, as Nikon images, if I open the CF Card icon. Again, the only problem now is that they will not automatically upload via NikonView 5, as they did with OS X.1.5 Secondly, can't find anywhere where it says NikonView 5 supports X.2. At this stage, I think not. Thanks Stefan [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Best backup solution?
Would appreciate any advice on the best backup solution please. I haven't got the bandwidth to worry about backup to a remote site. I probably need about 20Gb maximum backup capacity, and reliability, ease of use and speed is the most important thing (to encourage me to do it regularly). For this reason I don't think a Zip drive and hence multiple disks is an option. I have an iMac Special Edition (graphite) at the moment, but I want to take into account that I'll be upgrading over the next 6 months to whatever the latest desktop is at the time. I don't suppose that'll matter much anyway. The only consideration that I can think of is that a new Mac will probably have DVD-R capability, and therefore backing up to a series of DVD's might be the best option on balance?? Do I simply buy a 2nd hard disk to back up to? Are magnetic tape solutions available/cheaper/just as good? Any suggestions / experiences would be appreciated. Steven
Re: Recording LP's
Terry Go to your Macintosh friendly library and dig up Aust MacWorld Dec 01 which had an entire article dedicated to this topic. It included suggested software both commercial and shareware and heaps of other useful information. Eugene I would like to record some of my LP records on to CD using my PowerMacG4 and OSX. I have purchased a iMic and it seems to be installed OK but I can't find any information as to how to record to the hard disk so I can then record on to a CD. I have Roxio Toast 5. I am a recent convert to the Mac after many years doing battle with PCs so my present Mac skills are limited. Terry Mercer

Buy a firewire hard drive. Use Retrospect http://www.dantz.com/, or any one of the other available utilities. Incremental backups or archives to DVD-R probably aren't a bad idea either, as it's cheap to make two copies and send them offsite (whereas you may be reticent to do this with a firewire hard drive :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer It must be bunnies! Eudora Probs
I am attempting to get Eudora 5.1 running on my daughter's 5300. Each time I install it and attempt to get it up it tells me of a type 3 error. I have tried several copies from various CDs, so I assume it is a setting or something required is missing? 5300 (Director's Edition) OS 8.1, 48Ram Any ideas from the group? TIA Kevin

I too noticed this. I thought it was just me :) Actually, I think there's a significant difference in sound levels... iBot FireWire Web cam
hi, Anyone knows where I can get the iBot Firewire Webcam in Perth? Any Apple centres carry them here? Steven Tan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

on 26/8/02 21:13, Steven Tan at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hi, Anyone knows where I can get the iBot Firewire Webcam in Perth? Any Apple centres carry them here? Steven Tan [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've just helped a friend buy a FireWire webcam. I wasn't able to find the iBot anywhere but the solution I did find is excellent. It's the Fire-I from Unibrain. The camera is right at $300 and the quality is excellent. The bundled apps aren't too bad either. Only thing I didn't like about it is that it DOES NOT have a microphone in it. Since the person I helped find the camera has a flat panel iMac and the built in microphone in them is pretty good it's not a huge deal for them but it might be for others. The camera does 640x480 native resolution at 20 fps. Adjustable focus from 1.0cm to infinity. It has adjustable brightness, gamma, shutter, sharpness, saturation, and gain. To top it all off it's FireWire bus powered or can use an external power pack (although it doesn't come with the powerpack. Their website is at http://www.unibrain.com and has some decent information on the camera.
