Safari and banks

Has anyone managed to get into their bank accounts using Safari 1.0 b2?

Terminology again

2003-05-29 Thread Vladimir James
I previously asked for advice on interpreting the error message The
connection was terminated because the other side is not responding.
While I received some suggestions on altering my dialup procedures, no
one tackled the main issue. What does the message tell you about
connection faults (other than you're disconnected).

Using MacOS 10.2.6 512MB RAM PowerMail 4.1.3

Vlad James

- previously sent -
Often my dialup connection is terminated with the message ...because the
other side is not responding.

How should I interpret this? Can a fault on my set up be responsible, as
opposed to the other side?

I use Mozilla 1.4b most of the time, but I have similar terminations with
iCab pre2.9(US) and Safari 1.0 b2 (which still crashes when it gets a
whiff of the BankWest URL). Other data: iMac G4, internal modem using
Zoom V-Series script.

Suggestions?

Safari does seem to have trouble with the main menu buttons on the
front page of the Westpac site (www.westpac.com.au), which in effect
prevents one from navigating to their log-in page. However, it you
bypass the front page by directing Safari straight to the log-in page
https://olb.westpac.com.au/ you should find that you can enter your
details and access your accounts. From this point I concur with Keith
in that I find I can use pretty much all the Westpac features, except
the pay anyone option.

I also find that the accounts page does not size properly (i.e is much
wider than it should be). Occasionally this leads to some strange
button behaviour where clicking on the centre of a button fails to
produce a result. In these instances I find that clicking closer to
the left hand edge of the button solves the problem. I presume this is
something to do with the page sizing issue?

Cheers, Matt.

As a Ben Harper fan you can do the following three things:
* Return the CD to place of purchase for a full refund, stating
clearly that the reason for the refund is the copy protection.
* Send a letter to the record company explaining your
dissatisfaction with their product.
* Send a letter to Ben Harper directly, explaining why he won't be
getting the royalties from your purchase from this CD because it
was copy protected.
I'll leave it to your inventiveness to actually go to the store and
draft the letters...

I guess I better prefix this with the I Am Not A Lawyer caveat:

In Australia there is no right given to the purchaser of a music CD to rip
its contents or copy it in any way. Music CDs are not covered in the same
way as most software, where there exists a provision for making a backup. It
is a false belief that if you own the original CD you can then record it
onto other media - even making a tape is illegal.

This does not mean that you shouldn't be able to play your CD in your
computer, but does mean you cannot turn it into MP3s or create a CD-R copy
(unless you are given explicit consent be the copyright holder).

If the CD is not fit for your reason of purchase - won't play in your laptop
- then you are probably due for a refund from the store.

Ciao
Anthony

Re: key commands

2003-05-29 Thread Matt Huitson

Hi Greg,

As far as I am aware, there are a couple of different ways to achieve
what you are asking and the one for you may depend on how brave you are
feeling this morning:

a) One solution I have seen involves using the terminal and a
Hex-editor to modify the localized.rsrc file in the Finder.app. See
the following link:
http://www.macosxhints.com/
article.php?story=20020304093903824query=finder+key+shortcut

b) If you are proficient with Interface Builder (free with Developer
Tools) you can look into modifying the mainmenu.nib for the Finder. I
forget exactly where this .nib is located in the system directory, but
I'm sure a google search will help you track it down.

NB. IF YOU INTEND PURSUING EITHER OF THESE OPTIONS ALWAYS REMEMBER TO
WORK ON A BACKUP COPY OF THE SYSTEM FILE IN QUESTION.

c) Perhaps the most user friendly option is to take a look for
shareware/freeware apps at versiontracker like Keyboard Maestro, which
amongst other things allow you to assign or reassign various functions
to keyboard shortcuts at both a global and individual application (in
your case Finder) level.

HTH,
Matt.

Windows XP user mad at Apple; wants his iTunes Music Store

Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 09:07 AM EDT

We received an email this morning from a Windows XP user, Michael P., that we
feel sheds some light on how some Windows PC users feel about Apple. Here is
the email in its entirety:

To be perfectly honest, I don't understand why anybody would buy an Apple
computer. It is non-standard (everybody uses Windows) and proprietary. Also, it
seems to me that Apple is very desperate to sell computers, so much so that
they will withhold products that many would want by making them Apple-only,
in a bid to force people to buy an Apple in order to use these products.

I am a music fan. Yes, I wanted an iPod when it first came out, but it was
Apple-only, of course. So, I bought a Nomad Jukebox for use with my Windows
system. But, still, it was obvious that the iPod was better, and I kept my eye
on them over time, so when Apple finally gave up and made a Windows version, I
got my new iPod only to find out that I was stuck with MusicMatch software and
not iTunes.

At this point, I would like to make it clear that I want a Windows XP version
of iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, iChat, iDVD, Sherlock - yes, I've been all over
Apple's site - these applications look great, but I can't find versions of them
that run on Windows! Why would Apple bother to create all of these applications
and not make versions that will run on 99% of the world's computers?!

Instead, Apple would force me to buy an Apple computer to run these programs.
Why is Apple so insecure? Why do they need to try to force sales of Apples?
Obviously, nobody is buying them or they wouldn't have to try to make
Apple-only reasons to try to force sales of computers.

Which comes down to the reason I am writing: The iTunes Music Store. Why can't
I buy songs on my Dell running Windows XP? What kind of a company would open a
store that only 1% can shop? It's worse than opening a store catering only to
left-handers - there's many times more left-handers in the world than there are
Apple computer users! This is ridiculous!!!

I would love to use my iPod with iTunes and the Music Store, but I cannot. All
because Apple can't seem to sell computers and they are trying to force people
to buy Apples. Why limit all of these applications and services to a tiny,
insignificant speck of the market? Why not offer them to the majority standard
platform and create Windows versions, so the rest of the world can use them,
too?

In closing, here I sit wanting to spend money at the Apple iTunes Music Store,
wanting to run iTunes, iMovie and the rest (I'd even PAY for them), but I
cannot. Apple needs to provide a solution for millions and millions of computer
users like me! You can print this if you want and I'm sending this to Apple as
well. Thank you.

- Michael P.

Get her to send the e-mail to a PC user, and see if they can receive it intact.

If not, then the problem is either with Mail, your Mac or the path
the mail takes between your sender and the Mac. You could try using a
different e-mail program and see if it too has the same problem
(personally I use Eudora http://www.eudora.com/ as it's been around
for a lot longer than Mail.app)
