2003-07-23 Thread Barry Jones
hi People this is Barry from the Apple Centre Cannington, i was reading
a little quote from Dave Choy today.

David to give you a brief history of my experience regarding customer
needs, i have been working in it for about 10 years mostly pc from a
networking side to infrastructure development, it been 4 years with a
company called abacus computers, about 15 months ago i was asked to
help out at the Generation-Mac location, all the staff there had left
that day and left the store unmanned. having a powerbook 400 since 2000
and the only person in the company having any idea about macs they
thought it might be a good idea, i was redeveloping abacus cannington
at the time so it was a pain in the backside but the customer comes
first and there were a lot of outstanding issues, pulling that store
back from the brink of disaster i learned one thing, the store itself
carried over 80,000 dollars in spare parts that were never asked for in
the time i was there, this would never happen again, i see requests on
wamug all the time asking were people can get apple based products, i
think to my self, well if i think hard there are 4 apple centres that
could help me, there a 6 apple resellers in the metro, there are 9
apple solution center in wa, but still were will i go, i set up an
apple centre in the new abacus computers store right at the front of
the building, so as to attract new clients from the pc market, just to
let you know that i make more money selling a pc than a apple product,
but still we as a company did it. i spoke to a client the other day who
lives in gosnells its about 9 mins from the store, if you don't know
were it is is near the shopping centre in cannington, she drove all the
way to nedlands to by here mac, she drove passed our store to get there
she said she did not know we were there. i have spent over 40,000
dollars doing a refit for the apple location only it takes up 70 square
metres in the store thats about 24% of the store including storage and
generates 4% of the profit for the store and you ask me to carry a part
for a laptop that has had nine upgrades, i don't understand, do you
think apple centres make money for a 5 dollar product sitting on a
shelf for 2 years, i don't think so, if you live in the south side of
perth use the apple centre cannington i don't care if you price match i
don't care if i have to deliver it just support your store, the other
apple centre cannington that closed down had very little support and
has now gone. why do you think this is. if you new the pain i go throu
to keep this store open. now on a lighter note. please if you have
something to say don't post it here call me i want you to, even for a
chat, lets all remember people, apple spent over 30% of there profit
last year in development of there new products and people still ask me
for spare part for a mac thats 15 years old, if you think your mac is
doing a good job try the new ones, they will blow your mind. please
call me i want you to,

2003-07-23 Thread tuchwood

Hi Russ

In mid 2001, I had the Power supply blow on my 8500...right in the
middle of a CD project actually...

I had it repaired by

Applied Instrument Company Pty Ltd
1a/9 Corbusier Place Balcatta WA 6021
PO Box 115 Osborne Park WA 6917
Phone: 9240 6999 Fax: 9240 6988

Cost $110...was back in a few daysv. good service
At the time I was quoted $350 for a new replacement power supply!!!

The technician I dealt with was called Rouen Arnaud.
I remember him saying that they'd done quite a few of the
8500/8600 power supply repairs...

Hope this helps...by the way the Beige G3 Tower I bought off you is
still going strong...

Cheers

telstra. I had to ask the question about 5 times since she seemed
either ignorant or evasive and was eventually shut up with "Telstra
only guarantees 28.8" (ie so why was I complaining?)

Might be the path from the exchange to the Modem,
and just as likely to be the ISP.

naah I get 56k ALWAYS in Rockingham, the crappy speed is only
Applecross. And it's a 2 year old house with all new cabling. Mind you
the relays in the street frequently drop out on a Saturday for 36-48
hours so it might just be the line there. Who knows, still Telstra's
shitty service to blame despite being an inner city suburb!

Even a MUX system from the exchange to the Modem should give
33.6 which is at least a bit better than 28.8

hmmm. maybe iiNet geek was not so helpful after all. Still, 30 000 is
the fastest speed I have ever seen in this borough even on v90. Years
ago when 28.8 was the flash new standard, Applecross still only got
14.4 for years and years.

Cutting down the speed is NO satisfaction.

Bob

The helpful lad at iiNet fixed it by getting me to go into the Modem
preferences and select v.34 (rather than v.90). This locked the speed
at 28.8 and solved the conflict.

Give it a try.

BTW is it my imagination or is the above positive reference to iiNet a
bit of a rarity these days?

Re: S-Video to composite adaptor

2003-07-23 Thread Daniel Kerr

Good luck shay - I tried a few weeks ago - rang around all the
Applecentres - no one had stock, and to boot Next Byte quoted me $40. I
ended up going to JayCar electronics (www.jaycar.com.au) in Northbridge
and picked up one for $12.95.

Seriously, the stores here are very poor - I am sick to death of
supporting the local stores(which I have been doing for the last 5
years since I arrived in WA) when they can't stock simple items such as
this. The week prior to requiring such an adaptor, I was in melbourne,
where I spotted a whole BOX full of these things(of at least 40) going
for $25 at MyMac in mebourne city. The fact that I can't find a single
one readily available from the usual suspects (and that includes the
sponsors of WAMUG - added that just for you Matt Healey ;-)) show how
poor WA has been in this respect.

If Apple is to open any store for themselves, they should start with WA.

Dave Choy

Hi David

As a sponsor and corporate member for WAMUG (albeit a small one, as I
run my own business by myself at home),..can I add a little 2 cents
here. Although I didn't have this in stock, I had a spare so I lent
this to Shay until he can find a new one, or I can get him one from
Apple as I am sure it is not a part on their list anymore, but is
treated as a service part. I don't keep a lot of stock,..although if
someone wants to lend or give me $200,000 I am more than happy to
stock one of everything! ;o)

But yes I can understand that sometimes things are frustratng when
you need them now. The downside is there are so many new and old
parts that some things are hard to keep in stock, so I can see both
sides of the coin. Sometimes patience is a virtue, and I always try
and help out where I can,..and this is why I was more than happy to
help Shay out in the interim :o)

Have fun. Enjoy!

Kind Regards

You may want to look at the latest release of Mozilla (or Netscape). I've
found it works on my bank, Testra and any other e-commerce type sites I use.

I also happen to think it's a mighty fine browser.

Re: ABN AMRO Morgans Website

Well they don't seem to have exactly gone anti-Mac. You could always try
using Netscape or Mozilla.

Failing that, CerttoolGUI
 may prove of some
assistance. It is supposed to make security certificates available to Safari
through the Mac OS X keychain.

Also, a little app called "Safari Enhancer"
 will turn on the
Debug menu in Safari, from which I'm told you can control how Safari handles
security certificates.

I think it's something like: several key presses will produce one character
in an ideographic language...

Probably all in Chinese, at least in the Finder. Though trademarks like
"Mac" and "Finder" et cetera may remain in English.

In OS X, carbon and cocoa applications can contain as a part of their
application package multiple localised versions of the interface. If the
application has been localised to support the primary language, it will be
use that language. If not, it will pick the next highest on the list in the
International Preferences that it has been localised for.

That will depend largely on the web mail service.

Chinese language user

Hi All,

I can not read nor write Chinese but would like to create a new user
on an eMac (OS 10.2.6) using simplified Chinese. This will be for
e-mail and browser use of a visitor (with limited English skills)
from China who has never used a Mac.

Although I have consulted the Help viewer it has been of limited
practical assistance to my poor old stretched brain. I would
appreciate any help to these preliminary questions -
1. under International Preferences, which of the bottom two Chinese
languages on the list is the simplified Chinese one?

2. what behaviour do I select under the Script tab?
3. after making a language selection under the Input Menu how does a
person then use the normal English keyboard?

4. will all Finder menus be in Chinese only or both Chinese and English?
5. does the language change also alter third party applications?
6. is it possible to compose Chinese language web mail using Safari
and/or Internet Explorer?

Thanks.

Hi,
Does anybody know of a repairer for an 8600 power supply, or anyone selling
one ?

Regards
Russ

You could try the Computer Trade Centre
now at 316 Walcott St. Menora,
according to their web site.

If you're lucky it's probably the standard fault in the 8600 machines :)

Have fun,
Shay (I should really be getting kickbacks from them by now!)

Bank Fraud

Thought this may be of interest to all? Some source of comfort?

Hi Ken,

Here is that email in question. ANZ is also targetted. However these emails are
sent to anyone, whether you are a Westpac or ANZ customer or not. It has been
closed down twice in the US as that is where they are coming from and they have
started up again. The Banks are aware sometimes when the person's account is
attacked and close the accounts down immedatly. They can tell mostly if you log
onto your account on a regular basis from your usual computer via cookies
established, and if the cookies don't match, lock you out. All this is done
regularly by the banks without you even knowing.

When i recieved mine yesterday I knew it was fate due to a wake 1888 number?,
wrong log on URL.

Re: Sell your music on the iTunes music store

Well, ok, not to Australians :(

not yet... one lives in hope this is not to distant a role out.

Artists get 91%/Agent (CDbaby) gets 9% of sale

Now there's a royalty system I can really support :) :)

... I can see this sort of thing becoming really big with "collage"
and indie bands that have strong local following (so say like WA's
"The Stems") can release a local CD but can't currently justify
having these distributed to more than a handfull of eastern states/
US/UK music stores where they are only known because of underground
and collage radio.

And it sure beats having to order a physical CD over the Internet.

Have fun,

Why is HTML email *bad* (Was: Re: Bank scam!!!!)

There is nothing inherently bad about HTML email per se, but the problem
is that once you start with it, all manner of other things start to
happen.

Firstly, HTML allows you to link to external objects, which then allow a
spammer to track which emails were actually viewed and when.

Then, because you're encoding all kinds of other stuff inside a HTML
page, a simple message can take up five or more times the space an
equivalent text-only message takes.

Mail programmes sometimes use their own method of displaying HTML -
Eudora for example - which is not always the same as a web-browser would
display it.

HTML allows for JavaScript, so if a sender is allowed to send HTML
email, they need to also allow for JavaScript, which opens up a whole
can of worms in terms of malicious behaviour.

On a more esoteric path, if you allow active content in an email
message, you open yourself up to other active content which can then
facilitate email virus propagation.

The main reason stated for sending HTML email is "But I want to make my
email look pretty/corporate/formatted/designed." - Having just read the
preceding paragraphs, you can understand that this does not actually
succeed, because HTML is not meant - nor was it ever - to actually
accomplish this.

So, how do you then achieve the stated reasons?

Send an attachment.

Let me say that again.

If you want to send pretty email, send an attachment.

Of course if you want to be bandwidth friendly - given that recipients
pay for receiving email - more bytes = more dollars - you'd be an even
better email citizen if you sent attachments only if requested by the
recipient and sent URLs to the information in *all* other cases.

But then, some people don't have access to a web-server to put content
on, so people can actually get the attachment via the web. (Although 99%
of Internet accounts in Australia do in fact come with more or less
web-space.)

So, hope this helps,

This is a challenging question, because the whole purpose of MIME is to
facilitate attachments transparently.

The likely cause of your problem stems from a broken sender, but
sometimes the recipients' email program can be the problem. Pegasus Mail
was notoriously bad for example.

The most simple fix is to save the whole message, not just the
attachment, and drop the file onto stuffit expander.

Hope this helps.

Re: Mime attachments

2003-07-23 Thread Shay Telfer

I guess that this plagues everyone at some time or other. A PC wielding
friend sends me emails with attachments I can not open. They are mime
attachments. One is mime type-image/jpeg and another is mime type
image/gif. I am using Apple's mail.app on OS X 10.2.6. I have tried
Stuffit Expander, Graphic Converter and a few other graphic image apps
. I have asked her to not send as a mime attachment but she just resent
it as the image/gif. It is a letter type of communication which she has
just dropped into her email and it is not an alternative to simply type
out the letter in the email body. This is a person who does not know
how to spell Apple let alone know how to communicate with one, other
than simple email! And no, a solution is not to dump this very long
standing friend of the family.
So, how can I open mime attachments? I have looked at the list archives
but found nothing or was not searching correctly.
Thanks
.

There are numerous posts on the net about Mail.app not handling
Base64 attachments properly (possibly because the sender's software
incorrectly attaches them in the first place).

Stuffit Expander should be able to decode Base64 encoded messages, so
I'm not sure why it's not working for you. Failing that, if you're
happy to use the command line you can do the following from the
terminal:

No need to download anything or save the mail. Copy the message and in
Terminal you can do:

pbpaste | openssl base64 -d

or alternatively, switch to a different mail application (like Eudora :)

Good luck,
Shay
