ie:
covers all user skills from total beginners to professionals and

has a strong net presence - forum or email based.

has regular real world meetups.

has some formal rules but mostly informal.

Covers a broad range of sub fields of interest such as landscape,

of course probably best if (unlike WAMUG) it was platform agnostic

Fwd: Your usage has reached 301MB [Reference Number: 070511-004254]

2007-05-25 Thread Jon Davison
I wonder if anyone could help my friend with this problem, or if
anyone has experienced similar things. BigPond are stating that she
is currently at 759Mb usage with her emails, and are going to start
charging her for
overuse. I have had a look at her mail folder in 'Users/Library/Mail'
and it is only 49.9Mb at present. She does not download anything off
the internet, and does not receive or send large files.
Can anyone be using her account, if so to what purpose? and how can
they do this? I assume that she does not need a firewall for the Mac,
as long as she downloads the latest security patches from Software
Update?

So it would appear that someone is downloading files using her
account? she only has one machine and lives alone. We have no idea
where this usage is coming from. I have copied her (Mrs Nola Turner)
into this
message, just in case you may wish to email her direct for more info.
She uses an iMac/1.83GHz intel/OS 10.4.4/512Mb RAM/320Gb HD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

With thanks
Jon

Hi All!

Just a little tip for the day - make sure that if you are forwarding on an
email to list (such as this one), please remove any particulars that you
might not want the world to see.

For example, the last email from Jon had Nola's address in it. Would be
great if you could trust everyone on this list, but the list is also
accessible by Google searches. Who knows who is reading these posts!

(might be the conspiracy theorist in me, but the less personal details

Changing the font etc in an Appleworks database field

2007-05-25 Thread David Noel
Hi, I've used database files in Clarisworks/Appleworks over many years,
and worked out how to do most of the things I want to. But one thing
leaves me still baffled.

How can I change all the data in one particular text field (over the
whole database) to a given font, size, etc? Obviously the Layout gives
the defaults for such things, but data pasted into these fields often
retains font and size from its source. I want to retrospectively
convert all the data in a particular field to a given format. I realize
I can probably select and convert all data over all fields, but I need
different fields to be in different formats.

Sounds as if it should be simple to do ... if only some kind soul
would point out how...!! (esteemed Ronnie, where are you?).

In Layout click on the data field rectangle so that is shows it
little black handles for size changing then go Format and choose
the font etc. Return to Browse and the data should appear as chosen
in format. Save.

charging her for
overuse. I have had a look at her mail folder in 'Users/Library/
Mail' and it is only 49.9Mb at present. She does not download
anything off the internet, and does not receive or send large files.
Can anyone be using her account, if so to what purpose? and how can
they do this? I assume that she does not need a firewall for the
Mac, as long as she downloads the latest security patches from
Software Update?

So it would appear that someone is downloading files using her
account? she only has one machine and lives alone. We have no idea
where this usage is coming from. I have copied her (Mrs Nola
Turner) into this
message, just in case you may wish to email her direct for more
info. She uses an iMac/1.83GHz intel/OS 10.4.4/512Mb RAM/320Gb HD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

With thanks
Jon

Unbelievable

She cannot change password herself
They cannot say when and where the data was used
AND it starts charging after basic use !

Other ISP's have gone past these road blocks years ago .

Time for a change of ISP .

In the meantime make sure HER personal Firewall is turned on .

Preferences- sharing - Firewall

Re: Your usage has reached 301MB [Reference Number: 070511-004254]

2007-05-25 Thread Steve Woods

Jon,

I think the answer is in your question...

As far as I am aware, Bigpond charges for all traffic (other than
from their own servers), so Software Update downloads will count
towards the total.

Assuming that a bunch of Software updates were installed in the last
month, that could easily account for 750MB...

A number of other ISP's allow free traffic from Akamai's servers -
would definitely be worth a look!

Hope this helps!

Steve.

PS: was all set to vote for Ronni for WotY too - but couldn't get
past the Collingwood allegiance :)

An oversight on my part, you are right. Thanks for the sound advice!

Hi All!

Just a little tip for the day - make sure that if you are
forwarding on an
email to list (such as this one), please remove any particulars
that you

might not want the world to see.

For example, the last email from Jon had Nola's address in it.
Would be

great if you could trust everyone on this list, but the list is also
accessible by Google searches. Who knows who is reading these posts!

(might be the conspiracy theorist in me, but the less personal details
available publicly on the internet the better)

Re: Your usage has reached 301MB [Reference Number: 070511-004254]

2007-05-25 Thread Peter Sealy
It may be worth checking if all her email [assuming using Apple's
Mail.app] has been removed from the server.
Control-click on any of the blue mail folders in the folders list [in
the left pane] then open 'Get Info', then select 'Messages on Server'
which gives you a list of all the messages still resident on the
server, then select them all [assuming you don't wish to keep any
altho I can't see why anyone would want to] and then delete them.

The other suggestion of ensuring messages are deleted from the server
as soon as read will prevent such a build up again.

I check that Messages on Server every few months or so and always
find some messages still there even though they should have been
removed. Don't know why this happens. I just include that process now
in my [ir]regular housekeeping procedures.

Claris Works conversion

2007-05-25 Thread John Daniels
Dear Wamuggers
A friend typed her thesis on an old Mac some years ago. Probably on Claris
Works. She has it on disc but would really like to view it and maybe expand
it using her current Intel iMac.
Lorelei at Joondalup can't solve it at the moment and of course she is
pretty busy anyway. Anyone help?
