Outgoing servers in iPhone Mail

2009-06-18 Thread Peter Meyer
Can anyone confirm that my experience with sending email on the 3G
network is more general than mine, alone?

My iPhone contract is with Telstra but my current ISP is People
Telecom. Therefore I have the need to specify two outgoing mail
servers: mail.bigpond.com for the 3G network and
smtp.per.people.net.au for WiFi connections. Under Settings>mail
etc>accounts>outgoing mail server it is necessary to set a Primary
Server (smtp.people in my case) and 'Other SMTP
Servers' (mail.bigpond) and there it states that:

"If Mail is unsuccessful using the primary server, it will try the
other SMTP servers in succession."

However my experience is that with the Primary Server toggled 'ON',
using a 3G connection, Mail will try to send an email and, after some
delay fail with the message: 'The server rejected one of the
recipient's addresses (sic). The message has been placed in the
Outbox' If the Primary Server is toggled 'OFF' in this configuration
the message is sent but not as quickly as with a WiFi connection where
the Primary Server is toggled 'ON' It appears as if contact with the
Primary Server is still attempted before the Secondary SMTP server is
used. (so does OFF not really mean OFF?)
I have set up an account with bigpond as the Primary and the same
situation is seen in reverse ie: under WiFi if bigpond is toggled OFF
an email is sent after a delay but not at all if bigpond is toggled ON.

Having to manually configure the primary SMTP server's state whenever
the network connection is changed is seemingly contradictory to what
the Settings note about 'Other SMTP Servers' implies.

I had hoped that the upgrade to iPhone 3.0 would resolve the problem
but it hasn't. Nor has restoring everything 'as a new phone' (ie
without any previous settings) made any difference.
I have spent a fair bit of time talking to Telstra and Apple and, in
fact it was only in the past few days that I worked out the above
solution and was able to send emails using 3G connections although I'm
sure there wasn't this difficulty when I first set up the phone's
email. I want (need?) to send very few emails using a 3G connection
but this is, nevertheless, pretty frustrating :(

At no stage has there been any difficulty receiving email or
connecting to the net on either 3G or WiFi connections

iPhone 3G 16B Sales Blitz

2009-06-18 Thread Leon Shaffer

Hey All,

Was doing some shopping around last night to see if I could get some
pricing info on the new 3Gs and the Allphones/Telechoice staff member
(can't remember which on it was) let slip that Virgin Mobile are doing
a sales blitz on remaining stocks over the weekend for the old 16GB
model so might be worth a look is you are happy with the old model.
Sorry no pricing or plan was given. I believe someone in the know has
posted something on the whirlpool forum.

PS: No pricing info yet on the new 3Gs

Re: Telstra NextG tethering does work already

Hi Peter, I did actually eventually get it set up by briefly turning
on data roaming, then setting it up, then when I turned off data
roaming, it stayed on.

I haven't found that syncing with iTunes switches it off - so far.

cheers, Susan.

Severin

Unfortunately a new computer will probably not be so trustworthy !

Have you tried the Zap Pram technique ,
and how old is the internal battery .

Had a funny like that recently with a G5 and actually had to reset the
time

manually before I could get things back to normal !

It actually would not connect to the net until the time was current .

I have the time locked in on overseas time server so I do not normally
see if time has
dropped out after the power has been off . I have to guess the G5
battery has seen it's best days .

Have fun

BING Microsoft Search - Funny Acronym

2009-06-18 Thread Andrew Bignell

Saw this and had to laugh, some people are too clever.

BING, Microsoft's new search engine, its answer to Google.

BING really means “But It’s Not Google.”

Anyone tried BING?

Re: Hit counter / Sandvox - oops wrong link!

Thanks Reg

I had a look at the link and it looks great. (nice wedding)

I must admit I love iWeb as it is so easy to use, is intuitive and
looks great. I have had a good look at the Karelia
website and I like what I see. I may download the trial version and
have a play on the weekend. I would also like to have a chat with
Peter H and Daniel at the next meeting and work out the pros and cons
for both programmes.

The site I am building http://web.me.com/pfowler1/Site/
Welcome.html is a hobby of my partner and neither of us are HTML
savy. As I mentioned in an earlier post I am trying to wean her away
from the dark side (before her ageing PC crashes) and iWeb or Sandvox
sounds great.

Thanks again Reg and Peter

Re: iphone on three - FINALLY!!!

Hi Peter

I have been using my Optus bought iPhone for nearly a year now on the
3 network . Had it unlocked for free after the first month and put in
my old 3 sim card. The only change made was the activated the internet
on my card.

A 2yr $49 plan - $350 calls and 300min free 3 to 3 and a 1Gb data
plan ...
Hopefully this will not change, what will be interesting is what
happens now that 3 and Vodaphone have merged.

I'm with Optus. The Tethering Setting is in the Network section of
Settings under General. There is a button 2/3 the way down the
screen labelled "Set Up Internet Tethering". When you choose it, a
message appears: "To enable tethering on this account, contact
OPTUS". I read somewhere last night that this is going to cost $15
per 500 Meg. Compared with the cost of a USB Dongle this might not
be too bad, especially since the only place I'm really likely to

it will probably be at WAMUG Meetings...

It will be worth the first $15 to see how it works.

As a follow up, I have just read in an email from Optus that
official
pricing and terms will be available from 22 June. Account holders
will

be able to turn on tethering from within their account settings, as
long as they have iPhone 3.0 installed. Again, available from 22
June.

The obvious thing is the battery died - but could it be a power

Re: Hit counter / Sandvox

2009-06-18 Thread Reg Whitely

Hi Peter and Pedro

Here's an example of Sandvox.

Have a look at http://web.mac.com/rwhitely/Reg/

This is only a trial site but it was easy to set up and maintain. It
links to my old iWeb site - unable to update it because the original
folder is on a failed PowerBook hard drice (backupbackupbackup Reg!)

Have a look at Sandvox. You may be surprised: http://www.karelia.com/

It's wonderful and not restricted as much as iWeb might be.

Reg

I'll second that. I've converted to Sandvox pretty much full time. I
don't have the time or the money to continue with Adobe products.
The nice thing about Sandvox vs iWeb is that Sandvox produces nice
clean code that can be edited with Dreamweaver if you want to.

SV has its limitations, but these can generally be overcome with a
little lateral thinking.

Hi Severin,

When using Safari, there's an easy way to download YouTube videos.
Open the page with the movie and press Command-Option-A, which shows
the Activity window.
If you're also loading other sites, you'll see a list of them: scroll
until you find the YouTube page and click on the arrow to show details
about what is being loaded.

You will certainly notice an element whose size is over 0.5MB (most of
the time, over 5MB). Double-click on it (even if it is still loading),
and Safari will download it. When the download is over, navigate to
the file in the Finder (which will probably be called get_video) and
add the extension .flv to its name. Now you can play it with VLC or
with QuickTime (only if you have Perian installed).

Hi Severin

try here http://www.zamzar.com/url/ no need for an app on your
computer and no cost.

Zamzar will convert the video to mp4 and email you when done
[sometimes only a matter of minutes] giving you a link from where you
can download the converted file. Zamzar holds the file for 24 hours.
I have found this great as this allows others to also download too.
