Re: Mail behaviour

2009-11-27 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Martin,

The slow upload speed certainly isn't helping, I've heard that Reachnet is
painfully slow ;-)

Try the following:

1. Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail >
Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.

2. Drag the Outbox.mbox to the Trash and empty the Trash.

3. When re-launching Mail, a new Outbox.mbox will be created automatically by
Mail within the Mailboxes folder.

Test if this resolves the problem.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni

It has another account ...bbsatwhich I deleted ...Everything else is as you
described.

Could the problem be linked to the upload speed ...I know that the last month
was very slow ..maybe the month before was similiar without me noticing it .

2009-11-27 Thread Ronda Brown

No David, I have only ever been to one WAMUG Meeting years ago when Daniel Kerr
demonstrated my "IceBook".

Just remember you will be Migrating from a PowerPC to an Intel Machine.

NB: Upgrade any PPC apps to Universal versions (if they exist) before running
anything.

A good guide by 'Kappy' worth reading can be found here:

Re: Mail behaviour

2009-11-27 Thread Ronda Brown

Ok Martin thanks for that.

Do you only have one Mail Account?

What Port are you using for Sending Mail?

Go to "Edit SMTP Server List" from "Outgoing Mail Server" under "Accounts" in
"Mail Preferences".
(You use the arrow on smtp.reachnet.com.au & then click "Edit SMTP Server List")

Then to "Advanced" ... Does it have "Use Default ports (25,465,587) or what
Port is listed there please?
NO tick in "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

Re: Apple Mail - Migration from 10.4 - 10.6

2009-11-27 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi David,

Copy his mail folder under Home > Library > Mail and also the plist under Home
> Library > preferences - "com.apple.mail.plist"
and place in the same positions on his new MacBook Pro.

Importing Mail messages:The first time you launch Mail, a window prompts you to
“upgrade” your existing email messages.
This extra step, which Mail does not permit you to skip if you already have
saved messages, should take no more than a few minutes, and is necessary
because the Snow Leopard version of Mail uses a different database format to
store information about your messages.

Note that the iCal data is not the same structure and now stores your data in
/Users/yourname/Library/Calendars.
For this reason copy his iCal folder to the desktop of your Mac and use Import
in iCal.

Ronni

Re: mobile me

2009-11-27 Thread Tim Law

I've done as David suggests.

I have pointed my own domain name to my mobileme account and use both
Sandvox and Dreamweaver.

There is a setting in MobileMe to allow you to host your own domain.

The only downside I have is that the MobileMe does not handle the MX record
of domain delegation so you have to find another email host. I use Melbourne
IT as an email provider.

Setting this up was not that straight forward as I had to reset the domain
name records myself using http://zoneedit.com/ to edit my domain record.
This is a drag, and something normally done in a flash by our hosting ISP.
Experienced users who understand what they are doing will have no problem.
It was a bit scary getting into this side of web addressing, but I did it!!
They have good help files.

Loading Sandvox is easy once setup.

Loading Dreamweaver data is not so easy. There may be an easier way, but I
currently manually load the changed files onto my iDisk:Web:Sites: folder.
I'm not too sure how to recreate those settings in Dreamweaver and I also
find opening the iDisk is quite slow to load to view the files and dependent
on connection speed etc.

I don't make many data changes via Dreamweaver, so put up with the
inconvenience of this. Maybe someone can guide me on how to set up
Dreamweave to load to the iDisk.

I find the very large storage quota terrific with no worries of maxing out
my quota. It always seems to work, no one complains they have lost my
websites through server downtime. I already had a MobileMe account so
figured I might as well use the available services.

Re: Mail behaviour

2009-11-27 Thread David Moyle

Morning,

Odd issue.

I just had a look in Mail for setting I've seen before with other e-mail
clients. Some allow you to POP before SMTP. The idea being it opens a
connection tunnel to the mail server and then attempts to send the e-mail. Not
sure if that is the direct issue here but might be an avenue of research.

Maybe contact the relevant e-mail company (or ISP if that is the case) and
mention the issue? Might be coincidental with your 10.6.2 upgrade as they may
have a connection issue?

On that, under Mail's General settings there is an option:
If Outgoing Mail Server is unavailable
 - Automatically send later
 - Show a list of alternate servers

This option has never worked for me, even when I set send later it stills
prompts. Grr. You could try set that option if your not worried about e-mails
going instantly so you can remove the prompt.

Could always default to the good old basics, have you done Repair Permissions
after the upgrade to 10.6.2?

Cheers,

Re: mobile me

2009-11-27 Thread David Moyle

Afternoon Martin,

I don't personally have a MobileMe but I know a few on the list do so they
might be able to assist.

As far as I understand it is simply a web-hosting location so you could in
theory upload any information from Dreamweaver, Sandvox etc etc.

Great way to get ad-free reliable web-hosting, purchase a cheap .com domain,
point it to your MobileMe space and voila! Public website.

Apple Mail - Migration from 10.4 - 10.6

2009-11-27 Thread David Moyle

Morning all,

I'm just chasing some advice from you all.

In a few days my housemate will be getting his new MacBook Pro 13" he bought
yesterday at Black Friday prices.
He will be migrating from a G4 14" running 10.4.

What are the recommended solutions for migrating all of his Mail
settings/actions/folders?

I don't particularly want to use Migration Assistant from previous bad
experiences at work. Will Apple Mail 10.6 import if its connected as a Firewire
drive? Doh!. Just realised I'll need to grab a FW 400-800 cable todo the
transfer.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Excel won't open

2009-11-27 Thread Rod Blitvich
Thanks Ronni and James
Have followed your advice, Resolved Duplicate fonts.
Repaired permissions, restarted twice.
Still got the strange document when I opened Excel again, plus the spinning
beachball.
After a minute or so I was able to close the strange window and get things
working again.
Many thanks

No its an Apple, that came with the Macpro

I had a Benq experience the same issues as described by Gary and

and I took it to a service centre but typically it didn't fault
while they had it. I ended up having it in storage due to moving
and when I pulled it out it didn't work. By then it would have
been out of warranty so I threw it especially with the prices of
LCD's going down. Even today I still don't run with an LCD at home
just using the laptop screen.

Although I wasn't aware that it could be quite a common occurrence!

Oddly though most of the contents of the other mail boxes are still

I've tried several restores from Time Machine:
- just prior to the problem.
- 9 hours before the problem.
- 1 day before the problem.

With each the inbox and outbox (sent) are still missing. Any
suggestions!

Hi Mike,

1. Do you mean that the Inbox, Sent & Outbox mailboxes are still
there, but contain no messages?

2. Or that there is NO Inbox, Sent & Outbox mailboxes (showing in
the left panel under Mailboxes)?

If it is No.1 ... no messages showing in the mailboxes.
Try rebuilding each mailbox.
A. Select the Mailbox.
B. Menu Bar: Mailbox > Rebuild

If you are unable to rebuild the Mailboxes or it doesn't get your
messages back. First Quit Mail, then go to
Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Delete the Envelope Index
file and empty the Trash.
When you launch Mail again, it’ll tell you that you need to
“reimport” all your messages.

Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
This isn't really importing anything but is replacing the Envelope
Index file and re-indexing all mailboxes.

Cheers,
Ronni
