Qpix FS170 handheld scanners

2009-12-15 Thread Paul Weaver

Seeing as no one else seems to know about these very compact Qpix FS-170 film
and slide scanners I went back to OfficeWorks Freo this morning and discovered
they gone on sale at $129. I bought one and quickly have found it to be a
terrific 35mm slide copier. Maybe less than half a second to scan a colour
slide.

There's a strong slide holder which comes with the scanner. It can be lined up
easily on the colour preview screen. There is also a holder for 35mm
negatives. The images are stored on a user-supplied SD card. I simply
borrowed a card from my camera. Later I uploaded the scanned images via the
camera to iPhoto. The test images so far are excellent. The scanner can run on
four user-supplied AAA batteries which they reckon provide about 90 minutes
use. Alternatively they supply a USB cable which can draw power from a
computer or the AC power supply, which is also provided. There is also a
special brush/wiper for cleaning the optics inside the device.

The scanner is one of the niftiest gadgets I've seen for a long time. A
sophisticated, precision bit of stand-alone gear. I suggest if anyone has
slides to copy then this is going to be the ant's pants. At least I think so.
At $129 I think they'll go out the door pretty quickly once the word gets
around. Be warned, the instruction book takes a little study to figure all the
options out. I'm still working on it.

Cheers, Paul. :)

Hi folks
I printed a few photos recently which took a fair while to print, but
now, printing just an ordinary text doc prints at the same slow speed

Anyone got any thoughts?

Re: Var file

2009-12-15 Thread Glenn Nicholas

Justin, deleting /var is not a good idea. It is one of the core
Unix/Linux top level directories, used for variable files (e.g logs,
spool files)

Glenn Nicholas

2009/12/15 Ronda Brown ro...@mac.com:
 Hi Justin,

Is it /var/root/  in a folder called Library (from old Mac)?
Normally nothing in /var/root is necessary and this folder can be safely
deleted, if you don't use the following.

There actually IS something in /var/root/library which is sort of important.
For some strange reason login hooks and logout hooks are stored in
 /var/root/library/preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist. of course, not
many people use those but if you do use them and completely delete
/var/root/library then any login and logout hooks will disappear.

Hi John
If you choose not to go through your computer but just make a copy of a
page of a document is that also slow, that is,

1 position the page to be copied on the glass under the lid
2 on the printer press Home. The default is Copy but if not use the
arrow on the left or right of the OK button to get to Copy

3 press the OK button (make a choice if colour or BW)
4 press Start.
In this mode do you get a quick copy?

Hi Merv
Yes I get a very quick copy when I copy from the platten but when
printing from a text doc from, say, Pages it is very slow i.e. takes
about 1min 20 sec to print 4 lines of text spaced down the page. The
resulting printing is of very high quality.
I don't know if I did something when printing photos which has

John
In the Print dialogue box have you got the Presets set at Standard or
Last Setting Used? If the latter then it could be using the settings
used for a high quality print, hence the longer time to print even a
text page.

Hi Bill,

It comes with a disk of software for direct connection to a Windoze machine,
but this is of little relevance to me. The unit is stand-alone and creates .jpg
images onto the HD card as if it was a camera, which I suppose it is really. I
prefer to use it not directly connected to the computer anyway. I'll be
putting a sample image on my blog later this morning, about 9am. By the way,
the slide and negative holders are the best and most robust that I've come
across.

Cheers, Paul.

Mac Box Set

2009-12-15 Thread Laura Webb

Good morning all

If there is anyone interested in purchasing a new Mac Box Set, at a
reduced price, please contact me off list. This includes the Snow
Leopard upgrade as well as iLife 09 and iWork 09.

Because of a problem with my MacBook optical drive I am unable to use
the software, nor can I return it because, obviously, it has been
opened. To repair the optical drive will cost at least $350. That,
plus the cost of the software is almost half the cost of a new MacBook!!

Cheers

Thanks Alex.

I did look at that option, particularly as my MacBook does not have a
DVD burner only a DVD reader. I've been led to believe that it's not
possible to use an external drive for an operating system upgrade. I
would be interested to hear otherwise.

Re: Var file

Hi all, I just recently upgraded to new macbook and in migrating the content
across I have a folder called var (from old mac) which has about 775 mg of

 Many thanks in advance.
 Best regards

You don't tell just where this folder is located. Is it just sitting out at the
top level of your hard drive? Or is it somewhere a little deeper, such as in
your Home Folder. The fact that it is visible at all kind of indicates that it
is no longer important, since the /var folder is normally hidden from view in
the Finder.

Here's a hint: go to the Go menu at the top of the screen in Finder, and choose
Go to Folder... (or press shift-cmd-g). Type /var in the field, and you
will find you are viewing the contents of the currently-active /var folder.
Compare the contents of this folder with the var (from old mac) folder you
are concerned about.

Not also the location of the /var folder. It should show up as an alias at
the top level of your hard drive, albeit with a faded icon, indicating that
it is in fact a hidden folder. Change to Column View (if you're not there
already. ). Right- (command-)click on this icon and choose Show Original from
the contextual menu. You should find the the original lives inside a folder
called Private, which is another hidden folder. If you simply double-click
your hard drive icon in the Finder neither of these folders will be visible.

So to summarise: you should find that you have two var files - one called
var inside the hidden Private folder, and the one you have seen in the
Finder called var (from old mac). If this is indeed the case, I think it's
fairly save to delete the visible one.

If the only visible version is the visible one, your system file structure is
in trouble and I would suggest a clean install ASAP, although I really don't
anticipate this will be necessary.

My apologies is this description was a little too long-winded or unnecessarily
complicated, but it's much easier to do that describe...

Hi Laura,

I can assure you you can install Mac OS X 10.6 via an external DVD drive as
I had to 2 weeks ago due to an original MacBook's internal drive being
flaky. So you could still consider the external drive option - as you can
get USB drives on eBay for around $60 or locally for a little bit more.

discovered they gone on sale at $129. I bought one and quickly have found
it to be a terrific 35mm slide copier. Maybe less than half a second to scan
 a colour slide.

There's a strong slide holder which comes with the scanner. It can be lined
up easily on the colour preview screen. There is also a holder for 35mm
negatives. The images are stored on a user-supplied SD card. I simply
borrowed a card from my camera. Later I uploaded the scanned images via the
camera to iPhoto. The test images so far are excellent. The scanner can run
on four user-supplied AAA batteries which they reckon provide about 90
minutes use. Alternatively they supply a USB cable which can draw power
from a computer or the AC power supply, which is also provided. There is
also a special brush/wiper for cleaning the optics inside the device.

The scanner is one of the niftiest gadgets I've seen for a long time. A
sophisticated, precision bit of stand-alone gear. I suggest if anyone has
slides to copy then this is going to be the ant's pants. At least I think
so. At $129 I think they'll go out the door pretty quickly once the word
gets around. Be warned, the instruction book takes a little study to figure
all the options out. I'm still working on it.

 Cheers, Paul. :)

There's a strong slide holder which comes with the scanner. It can be lined up

negatives. The images are stored on a user-supplied SD card. I simply
borrowed a card from my camera. Later I uploaded the scanned images via the

four user-supplied AAA batteries which they reckon provide about 90 minutes

At $129 I think they'll go out the door pretty quickly once the word gets

options out. I'm still working on it.

Hi Marlene,

No way legally to do this. Apple Support page states you can only change the
DVD region five times and then you are stuck with your last choice. And that's
it.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DVDPlayer/5.2/en/26880.html
Important:You can set the region code for your DVD drive only five times
(including the original setting). The fifth time you change the code, it will
be permanently set.

There are ways of Flashing the Firmwareto RPC-1, (region free), but I would
NEVER give instructions or recommend anyone doing this.

If she only uses Region 0 DVDs (which have no region code), she is fine.

An alternate sometimes, can be a video player like VLC that doesn't check the
region code. BUT, Beware that your drive's firmware still triggers the OS
counter, which may then trigger a firmware setting change on your drive.
Its hit and miss on whether or not this will happen, with some Macs allowing
any region movie to be viewed in VLC without triggering a change, and others
triggering a change and potentially locking you out of future switches when you
hit the limit.

Cheers,
Ronni

Answered my own question.
Took an SD card from one our cameras and inserted in the card slot at
the front of the printer.
Used the provided USB cable and inserted in the front USB port (not the
Left Hand back), and connected other end to a USB stick.

Used the backup menu on the printer and bingo.
Plugged the stick into to the iMac and located the download on the stick.
