I didn't think it would be supported even though I wish it did. Surely Apple

Re: iPhone Apps

2010-09-02 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Eugene,

Well, it does work on the iPhone 4 pretty well considering the size of the
screen as compared to the iPad's screen.

The iPhone 4 handles Pages pretty well. Obvious translation issues mean the
app doesn’t work perfectly – but for an unofficial version, it looks good.

Cheers,
Ronni

Wireless connection issue - Wii to Time Capsule

2010-09-02 Thread Steven Knowles

I'm scouring the web for clues, mostly which involve wireless security
suggestions, but has anyone resolved problems connecting Wii wirelessly to Time
Capsule?

Up until recently my wireless home network has been pumped out by a Linksys
WAG160N modem. However the wireless ability of the Linksys seems to have died,
so to get round that I've plugged in a Time Capsule (latest firmware 7.4.2) to
the Linksys to get my wireless result.

Apart from a decrease in performance generally, Wii keeps disconnecting from
other players when using the WFC facility within Wii game Mario Kart. A
connection is established with WFC, but then at some point during the game,
disconnection.

I then realised that these problems started about the same time that I started
using Time Capsule for wireless.

With all the internet chat about wireless security being an issue, I've removed
all wireless security, maintaining only a closed network which I presume will
make no difference. Doesn't seem to have made a difference, despite having
cleared existing wireless settings from the Wii and resetting.

Suggestions appreciated.

Cheers, Steven

Disconnection problems

2010-09-02 Thread Laura Webb

Good morning all

This is a query on behalf of a friend who is a fairly new Mac user. She loves
her iMac but the enjoyment is being taken away by her frustration at constantly
losing internet connection.

Her ISP is Telstra. When she phones Telstra to complain about the
disconnections they ask what kind of modem she has and when she says a Belkin
Wireless router they say they can't help her!! She lives in a 2 storey
townhouse, the router is downstairs, the iMac is upstairs.

If necessary she will happily have another phone point installed to bring the
router closer to the computer but needs to know if that might solve the
problem.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards
Laura

RE: Wireless connection issue - Wii to Time Capsule

2010-09-02 Thread Crisp, Peter

Hi Steven, you have got me thinking now, I have my Wii wirelessly
connected to my Time Capsule (at least it was before I packed up and in
the process of moving house) and used it only for the purpose of
downloading the skins for some games the kids use.

I am curious to know for why you want the wireless connection into the
Wii and what possibilities exist for me that I don't even know that I
have. Does this give internet onto tv screen?

Re: Installing updates

2010-09-02 Thread Jon Davison

Hi Ronda. Thanks for your very detailed response. I tried the
installer as you suggested but there is no sign of 'Disk Utility' on
the instal disk at the
stage you mention. So I installed 10.5 from the original disk anyway
and archived the existing OS. It has allowed me to upgrade to 10.5.8
so at the

very least the upgrade is working.
But I will try again. Once I have chosen the language, it goes direct
to choose options etc, ie erase and instal, or archive and instal etc,
so there is

no info on Disk Utility?

This is with the two instal disks that came with the MacPro. Am I
missing something?

Thanks again
Kind regards
Jon

A). Repair Disk.
1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation
disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose
select your language first, then select Disk Utility from the
Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the
Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access
Disk Utility.

3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon
to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.

5. Select your Mac OS X volume (sub-entry below the drive entry).
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If Disk Utility reports any errors have been fixed, then re-run
Repair Disk until no errors are reported.

B) Then click on Repair Permissions.

C).Then Download the Combo Update from here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update

and try to install.

D) If you can install it, Repair Permissions again, this time from
Applications Utilities Disk Utility.

E) Run Software Update and install any updates.

If you cannot install the Combo Update after doing A and B.
Start into Safe Mode.
By holding down the Shift key from the moment you hear the startup
bong to the moment the spinning gear appears.

Expect this startup to take longer than usual.
Don't be alarmed if the fans whirl loudly during the spinning gear
display.

Eventually you will be presented with the Safe Boot login screen.
Log in as the administrator and reattempt the Combo update.

Remember to avoid performing any other processes while the Mac OS X
10.5.8 update is taking place in order to lessen the chances of this

There also range extenders available which might boost the signal in the
proximity of the iMac - if signal strength is the issue. I'm sure others
can advise how one verifies signal strength of their wireless signal
(other than the 4 bars showing in the little icon on top bar).

You must be very careful not to go too far into the installer application when
you boot from the Install DVD. Note that Ronni pointed out that you must NOT
click the Continue button in the first screen of the Installer (step 2 in her
notes). Keep your eye on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. When the
Installer menu first appears, that's when you will have access to Disk Utility.
If you click Continue again, you'll go too far.

Yes, this process could have been better designed, and if remember correctly it
actually has been improved in the Snow Leopard Installer.

Hi Roger Peter

Thanks for that but not sure if I have the answer. Except yesterday I took my
MacBook to my friend's house with the idea of using it if she was having
problems. That didn't work because when she lost connection I was unable to
connect either! Suppose that indicates a Telstra problem.

Having said that I seem to remember that her wireless icon was Ok which puzzled
me as to why I could not connect. I even tried plugging into her router with an
ethernet cable and there was no result there.

I might have to go back again and look more into detail.

The Router is loosing connection to the Internet, not actually the Wireless

1. Is she loosing connection while using the Internet, or after a period of
inactivity (after being idle for a while)?
2. Is she connected to Bigpond Cable or ADSL?
3. What Model Belkin Wireless Router is she using. (example: Belkin N1 Wireless

More detail will help someone give you advise.

Hi Peter

With Wii's basic offering, there is news and weather which requires a

Up until recently my wireless home network has been pumped out by a

to have died, so to get round that I've plugged in a Time Capsule
(latest firmware 7.4.2) to the Linksys to get my wireless result.

Apart from a decrease in performance generally, Wii keeps disconnecting
from other players when using the WFC facility within Wii game Mario
Kart. A connection is established with WFC, but then at some point
 during the game, disconnection.

I then realised that these problems started about the same time that I
started using Time Capsule for wireless.

With all the internet chat about wireless security being an issue, I've
removed all wireless security, maintaining only a closed network which I
presume will make no difference. Doesn't seem to have made a difference,
despite having cleared existing wireless settings from the Wii and
 resetting.

 Suggestions appreciated.

Hi David,

To be Super Sure that the New Name Change is everywhere,
Go into System Preferences Network - Advanced - and click on WINS and change
the NetBIOS Name: to whatever you have decided to name the MacBook.

Then Quit System Preferences and Re-Boot the MacBook.

Now you should not have any problems on the Network.

Merging Users

2010-09-02 Thread Warwick L Smith

Hi all

After migrating via 'transfer drive' both a G4 Mac and Mac mini, I now have a
Macbook with 3 'users' who are all in reality 'me' (as well as several
'back-ups' on external drives). Is there any simple way of merging the three
'users' without overwriting the 'home' user and losing data such as email,
addresses, bookmarks, history etc?

Previously it was simply a matter of moving earlier data into a current folder.
Then it was FileBuddy location and culling of duplicates. Now the sheer
volume of system duplication make this time prohibitive, so neither of these
options seem viable any longer.

Thanks

Warwick

 Hi Roger Peter

Thanks for that but not sure if I have the answer. Except yesterday I took my
MacBook to my friend's house with the idea of using it if she was having
problems. That didn't work because when she lost connection I was unable to
connect either! Suppose that indicates a Telstra problem.

The Router is loosing connection to the Internet, not actually the Wireless
connection. It could indicate she does not have the Belkin Wireless Router
setup correctly.
1. Is she loosing connection while using the Internet, or after a period of
inactivity (after being idle for a while)?
2. Is she connected to Bigpond Cable or ADSL?
3. What Model Belkin Wireless Router is she using. (example: Belkin N1 Wireless
Router)?

More detail will help someone give you advise.

Cheers,
Ronni

Having said that I seem to remember that her wireless icon was Ok which
puzzled me as to why I could not connect. I even tried plugging into her
router with an ethernet cable and there was no result there.

I might have to go back again and look more into detail.

 Hi laura

 We will need more info!

Does the router loose connection to Telstra or is it just the iMac loosing
 connection?

 Good morning all

This is a query on behalf of a friend who is a fairly new Mac user. She
loves her iMac but the enjoyment is being taken
away by her frustration at constantly losing internet connection.

Her ISP is Telstra. When she phones Telstra to complain about the
disconnections they ask what kind of modem she has
and when she says a Belkin Wireless router they say they can't help her!! She
lives in a 2 storey townhouse, the router is
 downstairs, the iMac is upstairs.

If necessary she will happily have another phone point installed to bring
the router closer to the computer but needs to
know if that might solve the problem.

 Any advice would be appreciated.

 Regards
 Laura

Re: Merging Users

2010-09-02 Thread Andrew McColl

Hi Warwick

Probably your easiest way is to choose one account and declare that
your primary account. Then login to the other two accounts, connect
an external hard drive and copy off to it any files that you feel you
need.

Once you've backed up your files log back in to your primary account
and copy the files into that user directory.

Then get rid of the other two user accounts. So they don't take up
additional space on your Hard Drive.

The act of copying files to an external HDD should ensure that any
user permissions attached to the files of the other two accounts
should be lost. If however you notice that some of the files you've
recently copied into your primary account aren't behaving correctly or
have disappeared you may need to go to Macintosh HD Users Primary
Account (Whatever yours is called) and do a File menu Get Info.
Right at the bottom of the Get Info window is a padlock and a Cog icon
click on the padlock and enter your username and password then using
the Cog select the option to Apply to Enclosed items. Which should
ensure that everything inside your primary user directory belongs to
you.

Good luck

Andrew

Hi all

After migrating via 'transfer drive' both a G4 Mac and Mac mini, I
now have a Macbook with 3 'users' who are all in reality 'me' (as
well as several 'back-ups' on external drives). Is there any simple
way of merging the three 'users' without overwriting the 'home' user
and losing data such as email, addresses, bookmarks, history etc?

Previously it was simply a matter of moving earlier data into a
current folder. Then it was FileBuddy location and culling of
duplicates. Now the sheer volume of system duplication make this
time prohibitive, so neither of these options seem viable any longer.

Thanks

Warwick

Slightly OT - Video cameras and sound gear

2010-09-02 Thread Mike Murray

Hi muggers

I know there are a few of you out there doing video editing and production on
their Macs.

We produce life-story documentary DVDs for clients. The end product is an
edited interview(s) plus various other inputs, saved as a Q/T .mov file, burned
onto DVD (usually 16:9 ratio).

Using MiniDV cameras (good equipment, 3CCD Panasonic, standard definition),
good microphones, Final Cut Express and iDVD, we make very acceptable products
that clients love.

I need to upgrade my camera but am a little confused about the swift changing
of standards, formats etc.

Ideally I'd like a 3 cmos sensor camera, miniDV, firewire, complete manual
overide of all the automatic stuff (including sound control), external mic
inputs, headphone input, just like my 10 year old Panasonic MX300. I guess High
Def is the in thing, although I understand that burning the output to DVD
converts it back to SD. I'm not sure if anyone makes such a thing anymore as
there's a big switch to hard drive cameras.

Any comments, recommendations or warnings from the Mac community?

Cheers

Mike
