Re: 1Password

2010-12-10 Thread John Daniels
Hi Folks
I have been in email contact again with Agile and here is their 2nd reply
which explains the process a little more. They certainly respond quickly to
emails to the support address:-

The 1PasswordAgent is a background process that kicks off another process
called 1PasswordThumbs. It's 1PasswordThumbs' job to create a miniature
thumbnail picture of the screen as you yourself would see it of any web page
that you have saved as a Login in 1Password, including any backgrounds, images,
etc. This thumbnail capability can be turned off in 1Password's Preferences,
but it's perfectly expected that 1PasswordAgent will get the attention of
Little Snitch. Because the sites it wants to access are the same ones (and just
as varied) as you use in your browser, it's simplest to tell Little Snitch to
always Allow any connections, otherwise you'll be prompted for each one (your
choice of course!).

The web page that you have saved a Login for also may refer to other in-line
images. So for instance, when you go to http://agile.ws/products/1Password the
header image is pulled from
http://aws.cachefly.net/aws/images/1password/home-header-v3-3.png and the
thumbnail process will attempt to load that image also while building the
thumbnail for the agile.ws page.

Cheers
John

Re: iPhoto 11 - making calenders

2010-12-10 Thread peta
Hullo again Marlene

I worked away with calenders using iPhoto and finally succeeded. I thought I
would have it printed out - but did not really want to pay $29.95 - so I have
printed it out ordinarily from my home printer. Now I need to think of someone
who has a binding machine for me so the pages will open and close successfully.

I have just gone on-line to the Harvey Norman site which you mentioned. You
also mentioned you had ordered your calenders on special at $23.97 each. I
think I will keep my eyes open for this!

Thanks for your help Marlene,

Peta

By chance, I looked at the Harvey Norman on-line site for making calendars

quality is just superb. I put all the photos I wanted to use in a separate
album in iPhoto 09 and was easily able to upload them to place in my calendar
 - both in the top page and in birthday and wedding anniversary dates. The
program is pretty easy to use and the results are outstanding. Ordered on
line (on special $23.97 ea) and no postage if picked up from near-by store.
If you go this route, chose Imagine uploader (in the prompts) for Macs.
Have just posted off 5 as really great Christmas gifts!

I have been trying to make a calender.

I keep getting numerous spinning balls, after long pauses when I click

I have gone onto Help and typed in various questions without much luck.

For example when I click on Create, the system chooses the photos of its own

Design the other Photos. Surely if I click on Photos my iPhotos
should open in some form and I should be able to change the photos the Mac
has chosen and put in a photo which is relevant to me?

Not so; I can delete the photo the Mac has chosen but when I click on the
Photos button the whole shut-down spinning ball business starts off again.
On Help, reference is made to the Drop Down Menu. I do not have any menu
 dropping down.

I have been able to edit information on the dates portion of the calender,
but can do nothing with the photos. Sometimes a row of photos appears
briefly across the bottom of the calender screen, but they have no relevance
to what I try to do.

Thanking someone out there who has worked with this and can offer some
 advice,

Re: 1Password

2010-12-10 Thread Ronda Brown
Hello Paul,

I was shocked and disappointed with your 'knee-jerk' reaction to Shayne's
accurate and factual reply.

Shayne did not have to take the time to reply to WAMUG list and possibly
diffuse a panic that your reply might have given people who don't understand
security issues.

A little research on your part before replying, to find out just how secure
1Password is and also what Little Snitch does doesn't do ( how to
understand, use control Little Snitch), would have been more appropriate.

1Password uses 128-bit keys for encryption, which means that it would take
millions of years for a criminal to decrypt your data using a brute force
attack.
Your data is encrypted using AES, the same state-of-the-art encryption
algorithm used as the national standard in the United States.

http://help.agile.ws/1Password3/agile_keychain_design.html

The Agile Web Solutions developers are working on a new release of 1Password
(1Password 4). Their arm is to make 1Password as easy as possible to securely
and reliably sync 1Password data.

Re: Dragon dictate for iPhone n iPad

Yes. Same here Pete. I was given the option of allowing Dragon Dictate to
access my address book and declined. That means I don't have the convenience of
sending an email just by dictating the name of the person but I value privacy
highly and decided to accept that shortcoming. I also chose not to let the
software use my GPS location -- I could not see what value my location would
add to dictation.

It is valuable knowledge that this is a server based product, the same as
Google Voice, and as such one should be mindful that whatever is said can
potentially be intercepted or stored indefinitely!

diffuse a panic that your reply might have given people who don't understand
 security issues.

The Agile Web Solutions developers are working on a new release of 1Password
(1Password 4). Their arm is to make 1Password as easy as possible to securely
 and reliably sync 1Password data.

Actually Paul it is not disturbing really. The second reply that John got
from Agile support is a reasonable explanation of why he is getting warning
messages from Little Snitch. It is simply advising him what the
1PasswordThumbs process is doing. And the response from support gives a
logical explanation of why the process is doing it.

 As they say:
This thumbnail capability can be turned off in 1Password's Preferences, but
it's perfectly expected that 1PasswordAgent will get the attention of
Little Snitch. Because the sites it wants to access are the same ones (and
just as varied) as you use in your browser, it's simplest to tell Little
Snitch to always Allow any connections, otherwise you'll be prompted for
each one (your choice of course!).

 Nothing to panic about there.

MS Word 2011. Colour and Copy Paste

2010-12-10 Thread Lloyd White

Hi everyone.

I have just upgraded to MS Office 2011 from 2008 version.
Some of the improvements annoy me - like the inability to tear off the
colour palette in Word. I can't find a way to do this.
I used this feature a lot for editing and making sections in colour. Pages
is even worse with this.

Another gripe is that it will not open any of my files with a / in the
name. :-((

But my main problem is copying -or cutting - and pasting in Word.
When I copy text and paste it - using the Apple keyboard shortcuts- C and
V - into a different part of the document or into another document it
comes out in underlined blue as a hyperlink to the original text. Which
has to be removed.

If I use the Copy and Paste symbols in the Word tool bar, or if I do this
with a right click on my Logitech mouse to copy and paste the links do not
appear.

Is there a preference that enable this to happen on the keyboard?
The problem does not occur with Pages which suggests that it is a problem
of incompatibility with Word and the Apple Keyboard?

But it does not happen when copying in Outlook.

Lloyd

Are you receiving any messages when you try to delete the emails? Such as

OK, It's a POP email Account, but you didn't answer the rest of my email … what
settings do you have for deleting emails?

On your iPad go to Settings Mail, Contacts, Calendars Under Accounts -
click your account name (j...@iinet.net.au) then click Advanced Deleted
Mailbox … do you have selected 'Trash' under 'On The Server' or do you have
it set to “On My iPad 'Trash''?

Also in Advanced Deleted Messages - Remove (after one day, after one week,
etc) what is it set to?

Opening ASPX files that have been downloaded

2010-12-10 Thread Tim Law

Hello,

In various websites I download a document and it goes into my Downloads folder
wearing an .aspx extension.

The only way I can open it is to manually change the extension to .pdf when
Preview will open it without fuss.

The other solution I have just discovered is that by right clicking on the link
in Mail and selecting 'download linked file', the file appears in my Downloads
folder with a .pdf extension such as ShowPage.aspx.pdf, whereas if I simply
click on the link it comes through as ShowPage.aspx

I am looking for a solution that doesn't require me to do this as it will help
others in the family, and me!

Apple Support forums doesn't seem to have come up with any better solution, and
even if I set the 'Open with' in File Info, to Preview, it won't work as
Preview doesn't like the .ASPX extension

I understand this is a windows file extension and the web site developers could
just as easily create the download in .pdf format which would make it complaint
cross platform.

Ta

Re: Dragon dictate for iPhone n iPad

2010-12-10 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Carlo,

Well at least they do allow you to opt out of the address book and location.

As to what value the gps location might add...

Why is Location Services turned on with Dragon Dictation?

Localization data is used to improve recognition abilities over time by
learning to recognize regional accents based on location. However, you have
the option to turn off Location Services for Dragon Dictation by going to the
device Setting→General→Locations Services→setting Dragon Dictation to off.

So, yes, at this point in time I doubt there is much regional accent data
built up for Australia!

Remembering how woeful voice translation was in its infancy compared to how
good it is now gives some idea of the value of all that data analysis,
learning algorithms, correction incorporation.

However, hehe, coming from the UK where the truckdrivers (when I was
hitchhiking) used to be able to place you within about 20 miles by your
accent - I think they may be being very ambitious here - I remember, as a
Yorkshireman being in a bar in Oklahoma with a well-lubricated Geordie
(native of Newcastle) and having to explain to the bemused Yanks that:

Yes, we do come from the same country
No, not too far apart - less than 100 miles
No, I can't understand half of what he says either!

I think they would do a lot better on that front if they asked you for your
formative location (where you learned to speak/ got your accent) in the
settings - otherwise what about the Cockney who first switches it on in
holiday in Glasgow !!

I must admit, I am just in awe that the speech recognition is as good as it
is (but then I'm not a Geordie or Glaswegian!!).

Cheers

Neil.

Hi Tim,

First …To answer how this is happening.
/Quote:
That’s a site issue, normally you’d serve aspx files as HTML as that’s the
normal output from the server when processing an aspx file, so this would be
the default behaviour on the web server. If the aspx file is going to be
actually serving something else, it should use the ContentType property of the
Response object to set the correct MIME type (application/pdf in this case) to
override the default.

These websites are not adhering to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
in RFC2616 (Hypertext Transfer Protocol — HTTP/1.1), Section 7.2.1 Type, which
states:

“Any HTTP/1.1 message containing an entity-body SHOULD include a Content-Type
header field defining the media type of that body. If and only if the media
type is not given by a Content-Type field, the recipient MAY attempt to guess
the media type via inspection of its content and/or the name extension(s) of
the URI used to identify the resource.”

In other words, how a file is processed by a browser should be determined by
the Content-Type field in the http Response Header; the file suffix should be
ignored when there is a Content-Type field. The Content-Type should be
application/pdf not text/html

This is often an issue when the folks responsible for the web server often are
not aware of all the “rules” and often only check things using IE on Windows.
/End Quote:

So Tim, to view these files on a Mac you have to change the extension at some
stage from .aspx to .pdf (which you have already worked out).
When you click on the file in Safari, doesn't a box appear showing the file you
wish to save as an .ASPX file … if it does, change the extension then to .PDF
and download it.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Dragon dictate for iPhone n iPad

2010-12-10 Thread Kyle Kreusch
Hi, All

It is good to see there's a version available now here in Australia I may
finally be able to get an iPhone. Also they have been promoting its free for
a limited time. But I haven't seen them make anyone else pay for it in
another country and it's been available elsewhere for quite awhile now

Regarding Nuances Collection Of Your Voice:

it's actually quite a long story and it all hast to do with Google and how
they went about designing their speech recognition algorithm.

1-800-GOOG-411 (Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOOG-411) is where
it all started.

Taken from Google's shutdown page
http://www.google.com/goog411/index.htmlof the GOOG-411
Service

GOOG-411 was the first speech recognition service from Google and helped
provide a foundation for more ambitious services

Before they shut down the GOOG-411 Service:

They applied their millions of voice samples to products such as

   - Google Voice http://www.google.com/voice Originally Provides you with
a Text version of your voicemail. Now is also used for other features
   - YouTube http://www.youtube.com/ Originally if you opt in they would
automatically try to provide you with closed captioning for your videos. I
   believe this happens now automatically

Which then allow them to build more of a database of voice samples, Which
then enabled Google to show off a great new feature built-in to Android a
voice keyboard.

To cut a long story short nuances now collecting voice samples in their
mobile apps (currently not on the desktop yet) so they can keep their number
one slot in the voice recognition software sector and not get taken over
by Google which is currently in slot number two.

I would also like to point out if you use the Google Mobile App your voice
is also being sent to Google to be analysed

Re: Opening ASPX files that have been downloaded

2010-12-10 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Tim,

I think the problem is not that the developers have created a pdf file with
a .aspx extension (Windows is even more touchy about extensions being
right).

The problem is that the .aspx link is not actually a straight link to the
file - it is a link to the process on the web server that
generates/retrieves the file.

I just usually let the browser open the pdf in a new tab, carry on with what
I'm doing and then check the pdf quickly - if it is worth saving I just
right-click on it and save as.

Alternatively if I just want to download it and it ends up with the .aspx
extension then I just change the extension.

I agree though, it is a bit of a pain sometimes ;o)

Cheers

 Hello,

In various websites I download a document and it goes into my Downloads folder
 wearing an .aspx extension.

The only way I can open it is to manually change the extension to .pdf when
Preview will open it without fuss.

The other solution I have just discovered is that by right clicking on the
link in Mail and selecting 'download linked file', the file appears in my
Downloads folder with a .pdf extension such as ShowPage.aspx.pdf, whereas if I
simply click on the link it comes through as ShowPage.aspx

I am looking for a solution that doesn't require me to do this as it will help
others in the family, and me!

Apple Support forums doesn't seem to have come up with any better solution,
and even if I set the 'Open with' in File Info, to Preview, it won't work as
Preview doesn't like the .ASPX extension

I understand this is a windows file extension and the web site developers
could just as easily create the download in .pdf format which would make it
 complaint cross platform.

 Tim

Hi, Kevin

I've been told that I have to clean up some of the computer parts that I
have lying around in my room unfortunately I don't have any full machines to
give away

But if you can contact me off list with a list of parts that you commonly
require I can see if I have any lying around
