Re: Time Machine problems

2012-10-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Paul,

I'm working on quite a few client support emails at the same time, so I can
only get back to you when possible.
How did you upgrade to OS X 10.8, was it a 'clean install' or an 'upgrade' from
Lion?

Have you only used this external drive to backup OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion?
Or did it have backups from a previous system on it?

Download the OS X 10.8.2 Combo update and install it over the top.

Then download the OS X 10.8.2 Supplement Update and install it.

Then repair permissions.
And restart again.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni,

Thanks for the suggestions.

> old backups are deleted" selected?

It is not selected.

I did the restart as you suggested but the result was the same. I then removed
the preferences file
com.apple.TimeMachine.plist, restarted once more and again the same problem.

I did notice another problem, not sure if there is any relation. These two
restarts were only the second and third after the upgrade to 10.8.2. The System
Preferences Panel seems to loose some settings. The first time after the
upgrade the screen settings were not retained - I have two screens and 4
desktops set up. The settings were all gone but I attributed that to the first
start after the upgrade. Today again these settings were lost, both times. Also
I noticed other settings such as Energy Saver and Bluetooth were not retained.

Probably no relation but it is irritating to have to rebuild settings that
should be retained...

Regards,

Paul

PS I did Repair Permissions both before and after the upgrade, no problems
reported.

Re: Time Machine problems

2012-10-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Paul,

Just a quick question.
In System Preferences > Time Machine > Options - Do you have "Notify after old
backups are deleted" selected?

If so:
Unselect it, then Restart your Mac, then Connect the newly erased 1TB external
drive, and see if you receive "This backup is too large for the backup disk".

If you have completely erased and formatted the external disk correctly it may
just be a incorrect message displaying.
By unselecting the "Notify etc" and restarting etc it might be enough to get
things going again.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Apple TV won't wake iMac

2012-10-07 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Ronni

Thanks very much for prompting me about this. I carefully noted all your
comments. I applied your recommendations regarding Safari as I feel this
potentially has some bearing on the peculiar behaviour of my system. I have
been recording various "happenings" on my network as changes to the setup were
made to try and make sense of the Apple TV problem. And spent many fruitless
hours reading user forums and Apple support articles.

I have not deleted old messages appended in this email, but if you do respond
perhaps it will be the time to save space!

The basic problem still exists: Apple TV will not connect if the iMac is
sleeping. Initially reported as intermittent, but I'm trying to tie that down.
I think we drifted off course chasing other issues. Now have software for
ATV ver 5.1, OS X 10.8.2 Supp 1 and iTunes 10.7 installed. I will give my
current "status report" and then address the particular items you raised.

Oddity No 1: Console log messages show a lot of mdworker, lsboxd and sandbox
events every few minutes while Mac is sleeping OR awake (but quiet).
("mdworker unable to talk to lsboxd" is typical.) Forums suggest this may be
normal for OS X 10.8 and is to do with Spotlight. Doesn't sound quite right
to me, but then …

Oddity No 2: With iMac sleeping, sometimes the Belkin LEDs are not flashing -
just the WiFi LED flicks about every 90 seconds. There are NO "mdworker" log
entries in Console during this state.I confirm that Apple TV does not wake
Mac in this state.

Summary of problem: Apple TV displays a message to effect that Computers will
display contents of (Apple ID) Library when Home Sharing is turned on. If I
touch the space bar on the iMac keyboard, the Apple TV then connects to iTunes
and my library is displayed. (I don't have to login or activate iTunes.)

Your questions: (But Safari/web have been much more stable in the last week,
even before I started on your recommendations.)

What DNS Servers do you have assigned in your Belkin? Are you using iiNet DNS
Servers?
iiNet DNS IP Address:
Primary:203.0.178.191
Secondary 203.215.29.191
YES to both - auto ISP selection.

In Safari:
Do you have any Extensions?
One only - 1Password. No difference when turned off.
A) Disable Java
 Disabled - no effect.
B) Remove cookies and other Data
Removed most entries - no effect
C) Turn OFF Autofill - "Other Forms"
 Never used, no entries.

Remove all website data:
Did all this by following an Apple Support document a few weeks ago in
attempt to get reliable access to BankWest. (I didn't; and don't - but that's
another story…) I followed the on-screen prompts when message said "Safari
could not connect to this site." Went through several steps of deleting
various degrees of data, but didn't do the ultimate steps (re-install OS X or
somesuch). Slow browsing while re-populating wanted caches showed that
removing all data is a big step I didn't want to repeat just now.

To close: Thanks again for your interest in pursuing this issue. I would
love to get it resolved.

Cheers
Alan

Ethernet is the best choice for your current Network.
Apple TV 2 supports Ethernet 10/100, so wireless 802.11n would be at least as
fast "in theory"; but, even though wireless 802.11n is faster on paper, there
can be many things that interfere with the signal (distance, walls, other radio

So long as you don't have issues with your Network, WiFi will work just as
well, but Ethernet removes all the 'ifs'.

Time Machine problems

2012-10-07 Thread Paul Willemse
Hi All,

My Time Machine suddenly gave up. The message is:

"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.06 TB but
only 998.49 GB are available."

The disk I am trying to backup has 453GB in use and 546GB free.

I have erased the Time Machine disk (Mac OS Extended Journaled), run Verify
Permissions and Verify Disk (on all disks on my system), all to no avail.

Mac Pro, 10GB memory, mid 2010, OS X 10.8.2.

Re: Safari toolbar problem

Good morning Ronni

-I don't seem to have any extensions. Is that unusual?
-There is no extension folder in /Library/Safari
-I have removed Inquisitor and SIMBL and a ClickToFlash.Webplugin

I have disabled all the Safari plugins and the problem is unchanged.

Most of those LIbrary folders, both HD and user, you mention are empty or not
there except /Library/Internet Plug-Ins where I disabled the plug-ins

Ronni I appreciate your help and I would like it fixed but it's not urgent as
Safari seems to be working well unless I try to Customise the toolbar, in fact
it is running very fast now. Perhaps if and when you have an idle moment you
could suggest a next step

If so "Turn ON" each extension you need, one at a time, and Test.

A) Disable Java

Disabling Java in Safari is highly recommended for safe computing, as well.
You should enable it only when on a trusted site that requires it.

B) Remove cookies and other Data

I would not be so sure about that! Left over "Clutter" from previous systems
can slow your Mac down and also cause problems.
Over time, your disk accumulates obsolete, extraneous, or otherwise useless
files, often called “cruft”—hacker slang for digital detritus. Removing cruft
increases the disk space available for Mountain Lion and reduces the chance of
software conflicts.

The Mountain Lion installer looks for, and disables, certain types of
incompatible software—but there’s no guarantee it will find everything. Given
the choice, you’re usually better off upgrading third-party software before you
install a new version of your operating system.
In cases where low-level incompatibilities exist, especially with things like
drivers, preference panes, kernel extensions, and startup items, you can save
yourself grief by preventing, rather than fixing, the problem.

Clean up your Mac, "uninstall" any applications, third party widgets,
utilities, anything on your Mac you no longer use or need.

Cheers,
Ronni

Before you do anything "Backup"your computer... Make sure your

When your daughter connects her iPod to the new iMac, is iTunes

Hi Allen,

Did you check in ~/Library/Safari/Extensions?

Have you installed any third-party add-ons?
Unsupported third-party add-ons may add features to Safari or change its
appearance.

Use the add-on's uninstaller, if possible

Quit Safari.
Remove any unsupported third-party add-ons you've installed (see if the
add-on's installer includes an uninstall feature).
Open Safari again.
If these steps fix the issue you were having, check the website of the
software's developer to see if there is an updated version available, or avoid
using the add-on.

Manually uninstall third-party add-ons

If the software doesn't have an uninstall feature, quit Safari and try manually
removing the third-party add-on files. These files are usually installed in one
or more of the following locations:

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
/Library/Input Methods/
/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/ScriptingAdditions
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
~/Library/Input Methods/
~/Library/InputManagers/
~/Library/ScriptingAdditions
The first four locations listed are in the root-level Library on your hard
disk, not the user-level Library in your Home folder.

The tilde (~) represents your Home folder.

Ronni

Re: Time Machine will not complete backup.

2012-10-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Thanks Bill,

Wow 18 seconds is fast. All is looking good so far!
If you can tomorrow let TM run its hourly backups, mainly to check that the
external drive is working properly as I mentioned previously.
First run in the morning TM will do a 'Daily Backup' which I'll explain more
about when I can find time to upload the document to my support website. I'll
post when it is available.

Thanks again for your feedback I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Ronni

Ah Daniel, we work as a good team on WAMUG ;-)

 Bill,
Keep a watch that the external drive wakes up when TM is due to backup
and that it doesn't loose connection.

Do you have Time Machine Buddy Widget installed? If not I recommend
you do, so you can keep an eye on what is happening with TM.
I always install it for clients when setting up Time Machine for them.
I am (as you probably know) fairly pedantic with making sure my
clients (& WAMUG members) have a good "Backup Strategy".
I also show them how (& leave my Tutorials showing them) to check
their TM backups by "Entering Time Machine" and "How to Restore a file
or application" from within the TM 'Star Wars' interface.

"Time Machine Buddy organises and displays the systems logs generated
by Apple's Time Machine Backup. With this widget you will be able to
quickly tell what is happening behind the scenes for the backup in
 progress or any previous backups.

 WHAT'S NEW
 Release v1.07
 - Mountain Lion Support
 - Please REBOOT machine after install. 10.8 caches widgets.
 Release v1.06
 -Lion Support
 -Performance improvements
 -Remove freezes on large logs

I would feel easier if you had a better backup strategy and were not
just relying on Time Machine for backups.

Re: Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on 2007 MacPro 1,1

2012-10-07 Thread Tim Law
Thanks Ronni

The Mac Pro doesn't owe me anything but is new to me. If I were to buy a new
computer it would be another mac Mini with one or two SSD drives. The Pro
really is excess to requirements but a nice machine still, notwithstanding its
OS limitations.

Years ago I managed to stretch the life of a 7200 with a different PCI card,
and am contemplating whether to try the same with this Pro. I won't go ahead if
the upgrade is not commonly successful.

Re: Time Machine will not complete backup.

2012-10-07 Thread Bill Parker
OK Ronni,

Here is what the widget says:

Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Parker/Backups.backupdb
810.1 MB required (including padding), 353.48 GB available
Copied 1549 files (1.4 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.
808.5 MB required (including padding), 353.48 GB available
Copied 130 files (93 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
Starting post-backup thinning
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
Backup completed successfully.

It took 18 seconds.

I have only worked on one document in several hours.

Thanks Ronni, well I've been just about to buy one through the previous 2 or 3
iterations. I suppose if I keep waiting, there will always be a better one just
'around the corner'. :)

It will be mid next year when my logical next opportunity presents itself
irrespective of if there's a new model or not.

Will check with this forum then.

Re: Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-07 Thread Allen Gladwell
Hi Ronni

Thanks for that but none of those changed anything. I moved the.plist out and
then put it back, trashed the Cache.db file and I don't have any extensions but
I turned extensions OFF anyway. I quit Safari with Command Q each time

Should I get a new copy of Safari?. I do have Time Machine running but I have
no idea where to go back to

Re: Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Allen,

Safari preferences might be corrupted.

Quit Safari.

Go to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.

Relaunch Safari. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not,
move it back to the Preferences folder.

If that didn't help, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Move the Cache.db file to the Trash. Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

If that doesn't fix the problem:
Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions. If you have any installed, turn them
OFF, Quit Safari, then relaunch Safari to test.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Time Machine will not complete backup.

2012-10-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Bill,

After TM does the first Complete Full backup it is best to keep it running for
a few hours to check that the hourly backups run fine, and that the external
drive is behaving properly... waking and not dropping connection.

I'll post tomorrow under another Subject how Time Machine works explaining, the
hourly, daily, weekly backups, hard links etc.
Better still If I get time I'll upload a PDF to my website.

Cheers,

Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-07 Thread Allen Gladwell
Hi All

I have a problem with my safari toolbar (Safari 5.1.7 - MacBk Pro 2 Core Duo
- OS 10.6.8)

I cannot customise the toolbar. When go to View and click on Customize Toolbar
nothing happens ie no drop down menu to rearrange the icons. I don't know when
this happened since I don't do it often. I have restarted twice but it still
doesn't work

In addition if I then click on View-Customize Toolbar I find that the icons in
the toolbar have stop working until I stop safari and reload it from the dock
and they are working again

I'd be grateful for any suggestions

Thanks Allen

 Hi Bill,

I have to take a break now and put some food into my body. I'll email
you offlist my tutorial "How to Format & Partition External Drive For
Time Machine ", so you can Format the external drive. It is not worth
trying to recover anything from the external drive as it has never
completed a backup and there will be some corruption probably an
 "inProgress" file.

In the mean time as I mentioned to Peter, in case we find your
external drive is faulty even after you have formatted it correctly, I
suggest if you have another external drive formatted correctly for
your Intel Mac that is large enough to hold your whole system that you
use SuperDuper or CCC to do a bootable backup of your computer.
If you don't have another external drive to do this, backup your
important files to a USB Thumb Drive or to a disc.

I'll email the Tutorial to you now before I take a break.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Re: Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on 2007 MacPro 1,1

2012-10-07 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Pete,

Well, they will have a 27-inch screen :-)
Note: The this is all circumspect information below:

The leaked benchmark for a new iMac described a model called iMac13,2, which
runs on a 3.4 GHz Core i7-3770 quad-core processor with 4GB of 1600 MHz RAM,
and operates on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

But "what will be will be", only Apple know exactly what the specifications
will be and when the release date will be.
But I would not be buying one at this time, I would wait a bit longer.

I haven't heard of screen issues on the latest iMacs?

Cheers,
Ronni

Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on 2007 MacPro 1,1

2012-10-07 Thread Tim Law
Hello,

I have come across a July 2007 MacPro 1,1 machine that is running Lion.

Although daunted by the physical size of the machine compared to my Mac Mini, I
am attracted to the idea of mounting extra drives internally.

However, it does not run Mountain Lion. I am running Mountain Lion on my Mac
Mini - Late 2009 model and so various software has been updated and I cannot
simply import all my data onto the MacPro running Lion, hence am interested to
see if I can get the MacPro running on Mountain Lion.

There is a blog at http://www.jabbawok.net/?p=47 that seems to be well regarded
as a solution, and involves purchasing a Radeon HD 5770 kit from the Apple
Store $249, plus fiddling with installing a different boot system on an extra
internal drive.

My query is has anyone had any success with this upgrade?
Alternatively, I can set it up to run Lion and let one of the family use it.

I realise that by spending money on the Mac Pro, a five year old machine, that
sooner or later it will become redundant once again, unable, like my iPad 1, to
move to the newest OS.

Tim

Re: iPad

2012-10-07 Thread Tim Law
Hi Glen,

Just some basics from my experience

You first need to load the music from the CD into iTunes. You don't drag the
music on the CD straight into the iPad. Then you can eject the CD from the
computer. Try playing the music in iTunes. Does that work?

When you sync the iPad, it 'should' sync all your music from iTunes onto your
iPad.

That is, if you have selected 'Sync all music' in iTunes.
You 'may' have chosen to sync only a few tunes, and the new music you have in
your iTunes library is left out of the sync.

To help us,
Have you been able to sync ANY music onto the iPad, or is this the first lot of
music you have moved from a CD to the iPad.

If the problem is more technical than a simple setup issue, you'll need to let
the group know the type of computer you have, the operating system version and
the version of iTunes and the iOS version of the iPad, just in case there are
any odd incompatibilities going on.

Tim

Ah Daniel, we work as a good team on WAMUG ;-)

 Bill,
Keep a watch that the external drive wakes up when TM is due to backup and
 that it doesn't loose connection.

Do you have Time Machine Buddy Widget installed? If not I recommend you
do, so you can keep an eye on what is happening with TM.
I always install it for clients when setting up Time Machine for them.
I am (as you probably know) fairly pedantic with making sure my clients (&
WAMUG members) have a good "Backup Strategy".
I also show them how (& leave my Tutorials showing them) to check their TM
backups by "Entering Time Machine" and "How to Restore a file or
application" from within the TM 'Star Wars' interface.

"Time Machine Buddy organises and displays the systems logs generated by
Apple's Time Machine Backup. With this widget you will be able to quickly
tell what is happening behind the scenes for the backup in progress or any
 previous backups.

 WHAT'S NEW
 Release v1.07
 - Mountain Lion Support
 - Please REBOOT machine after install. 10.8 caches widgets.
 Release v1.06
 -Lion Support
 -Performance improvements
 -Remove freezes on large logs

I would feel easier if you had a better backup strategy and were not just
relying on Time Machine for backups.

Re: Mail Time Out By 1 Hour

2012-10-07 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Pete

As you've noted, yes, it's normally done at the ISP receiver end.
As long as you have all correct in your system, which from what you've said
with your computer time, then that should all be correct.
I would think their (Internode) mail server may have adjusted your mail times
in receiving. (Seen the same happen for a clients server as well, The ISP mail
server kept losing time, so the mail was showing as different times almost
every hour!) ;o)
Hopefully they'll note it and fix it for you :)

Another way to test it is to send yourself an email. In the subject line put
something like Test email sent 1520. (or the approx time you send it). Then see
what time it comes back in with. :o)
That can help as well :o)

Kind regards
Daniel

Mail Time Out By 1 Hour

2012-10-07 Thread Pete Smith
Here's an interesting thing.

Anyone else getting this?

I was just looking at Daniel's post when I became aware that in my mail box, it
says that his email was received at 15.30. Yet my iMac clock reads 14.56 as I
type. Also Daniel's email says it was sent at 2.30.16 PM AWST. I'm using Apple
Mail and this has only started today.

I've checked another email I received earlier and the same applies. I know
Apple stuff is good, but this is pushing it a bit!!:)

I assume it is something with the provider rather than Mail. I've sent them a
query so we'll see what happens. I'm with Internode and very happy with them.
However, their feedback emails are only monitored Monday to Friday normal
business times.

Daylight saving has started over there today (silly sods!!), so they've
probably cocked up the WA time.

I'll keep you posted.
