Check the cupboards!

2012-01-22 Thread David Peake
Hi folks,

Haven't made a post to the group for a long time now but still reading in the
background...

I've got an old Macintosh SE and a Macintosh Classic which I'm looking to
connect up to re-live some old black-and-white games.

Since moving house I've lost a few bits and pieces it seems and I'm missing
both the ADB cables used for connecting the keyboard to the Mac.

I've also got an old external SCSI hard drive however I can't find an SCSI
terminator (remember these)!?

So anyone willing to check their "old tech cupboard" please let me know if you
have any ADB cables, SCSI cables/terminators (or old keyboard/mouse and any
other suitable parts for that matter) that you'd be willing to sell me.

Thanks in advance.
David.

P.S. I saw Peter Hinchliffe offered some SCSI cables recently so I've sent him
an email too.

Hi Brian,

If you still have the Sonnet card it would fit perfectly into my Mac

with floppy disk and manual.

For some Mac museum perhaps.

The monitor still works OK but it's quality doesn't compare to my
iMac;)

Both items together or separately will need to be picked up from
Subiaco.

I've got a damaged G5 tower here with that requires two new CPU's (dual 1.8) -
the graphics card is possibly still usable and worth a try if it helps.

Let me know.

Re: Built in speaker not working

2009-11-13 Thread David Peake

Hi Kevin,

May be a silly question but have you tried an alternative boot volume
to give you more of an idea whether this is software or hardware
related?

Startup a similar Mac you've got there that DOES have sound as a
FireWire Target, connect the two and boot one of the 'sus' Macs off
the 'good' startup volume and see if you regain sound.

David.

Robin,
Thanks for the suggestion, however that is not the problem.

The sound dropped on both of them out before I scrounged up some
speakers to plug into the tower(s).

cheers

Kevin

I think you should check the output socket. It sounds as though it
is not properly resetting when you take the external line plug out.
Hence isolating the internal speaker.
It is generally the spring contact not properly reseating, due
either to mechanical failure aka breaking, or dirt on the contacts.

hope this helps

robin

I will check the software extras on both machines, but meanwhile,
has anyone experienced similar before?

Re: Snow Leopard, MacPro & RAID

2009-11-01 Thread David Peake
Ray, you can setup a software RAID on a MacPro under Snow Leopard for
RAID0 (stripe) or RAID1 (mirror) with Disk Utility just as you have
done before. You only need the additional RAID card to create more
advanced level of RAID (such as a combination of mirror and stripe).

As far as I'm aware, the drives capacity (and/or manufacturer) don't
HAVE to be identical at all, you will just find that the two slices of
the RAID need to be the same. For example, you can use a 200GB drive
and a 320GB drive, but your mirror RAID will only ever be able to be
200GB. It is recommended to use the same size drives, only so you're
no wasting capacity as you would in the above instance.

For an increased safety level in an ideal world, you would want to use
the same capacity drives from the same manufacturer but a different
production batch.

I am considering updating to MacOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and a
current MacPro, the one with the Nehalem processor. Does anyone know
if Disk Utility will still allow me to set up a mirrored RAID set on
such a MacPro, assuming I fit two identical hard drives. Note that I
am NOT planning to get the A$1000 plus raid card for the MacPro.

Would be the type found in a Performa or PowerMac 4400, 5400/5500,

Indeed Bob, a rare animal by the looks, even on ebay!

me off-list if you wish to pickup something. Sorry, no post.

There are keyboards and mice too, but will only be available on a
first-in, best dressed basis and are limited.

Most things have an OS already installed, but I'm not going to make
any guarantee as to what version exactly and that it won't need work/

I'm only offloading these as they are doubles in my personal
collection, they are not junk/broken/irreparable.

Please, only contact if you are genuinely interested however. Thank

Re: MS Office X updater - found!?

2009-04-15 Thread David Peake

Hey Peter,

I've got here a copy of a 10.1.5 updater for Office X Mac.

It's 6.3 MB, let me know if you would like a copy.

David.

Does anyone out there in WAMUGLand still have a copy of the last
(most recent) update file for M$ Office X? It is no longer

The issue is the Entourage database on a client's machine. She has
just bought a nice shiny new 20" iMac, but the Entourage database
on her old iMac is corrupt. The issue seems to be that the original
version of Office X could only handle a maximum database size of
2Gb (at which point the database ceased to function), but that this
limit was fixed with an update. The problem is not so much with the
old email messages, but with the addresses in the Address Book. I
have tried several measures: importing into Entourage 2004, running
a little shareware app called Entouraid, rebuilding the database
under Entourage 2004, all to no avail. My feeling is that if I can
update the Office X on her original iMac and THEN rebuild, the
problem may go away.

I would be very grateful t hear from anyone who might have a copy
of the original updated file hanging around. I'm hunting around
through some of my old MacFixit CDs and various other ancient
resources, but I'm keen to deal with this more quickly than that
process is going to take!

I think I've found it myself! I have a copy of the Office 10.1.4
Update on my old G4. Can anyone confirm if this was final release?
(I knew that keeping all these old updates might pay off
someday :-) )

Re: Very Old Disks

2008-12-08 Thread David Peake
For anyone interested: I used a Mac Classic (running system 6) using
the internal floppy drive as well as an Apple badged external floppy
drive.

In the process of getting a compact Mac up and running, I found that
none of my SE's boot anymore (hard drives have all failed) - Another
story, but does anyone have an old Mac SE sitting in a cupboard
somewhere?

Anyway, the trick is (as someone else mentioned) to put a bit of
sticky tape over one of the small square 'openings' in the corner of
the floppy disc so that its format can be recognised correctly in the
Mac Classic.

I then transferred the data to a 'modern' 1.44 MB floppy disc, Mac
formatted using the Mac Classic, which could then be read in an
external HD USB floppy drive connected to my MacBook Pro.

From the MacBook Pro I moved the data from 1.44 MB floppy disc to CD
for compatibility's sake.

The data can now be used under Mac OS X or Windows XP and the Word 5
(or earlier) documents that were on the floppy discs are now on CD and
completely compatible with Office '03 on Windows format which is
interesting.

you were willing to do that.

And if that does not work I have a Mac LC475 which will loadOS
7.1
and have an external SCSI hard drive and/or a scsi cd burner which
might still work

Can put scsi external hard drive on to a G4 ( PCI scsi card )

The disks were written quite recently apparently and still read

I think the problem is going to be that anything old enough to
read them won't have any way of creating a medium that can be

Re: Finder not working

2008-10-26 Thread David Peake

There are three "Cache" folders in OSX.

Macintosh HD/System/Library/Caches
Macintosh HD/Users/*user*/Library/Caches
and
Macintosh HD/Library/Caches.

Move the contents of any of these folders to the trash (no need to
empty trash however). All files and folders within the cache folders
are safe *enough* to remove.

I know you may loose preferences such as any specifically changed
default 'open with' settings for some documents and the computer will
start up slowly after the first restart as the OS rebuilds these cache
files.

2008-10-26 Thread David Peake
Try deleting the contents of the "Cache" folders - usually works for
me (if you can access them). You will most likely need to boot from
another device though... Easy enough if you have another Mac and a
FireWire cable!

Re: How to transfer MacBook user content to MacBook Pro ?

Won't be a problem. If you don't already have it - download "Carbon
Copy Cloner" - it's an excellent clone tool and the best bit is it's
free.

Kyle's suggestion of cloning the drive over would be my preferred

It should be perfectly ok As they are both laptop's

It would not be an option if say one was intel and the other was a

That is correct
They would both need to be the same architecture. Which they both are
As Apple never made a PowerPC-based MacBook or MacBook Pro

I would try and confirm with someone that they had done this before

This is the main reason I think it should work As I have started a

If you were able to clone the new system to an external firewire

you should be able to just clone it to the Macbook Pro.

Recommend you do this if you possibly can

You have a number of options to get your repaired Macbook Pro up to

My preferred option would be a clean install on the repaired

then migrate everything over from the current Macbook.

That would be my preferred option to

You say you don't want to do this because you don't have the original

not sure
how Apple differentiates this - for example the install discs from

won't work with a Macbook but I don't know if the Macbook/Macbook

different - you could try it in my experience it will either work

something like "this software cannot be installed on this computer".

Unfortunately They are two separate sets of disks

Re: freezing

2008-06-24 Thread David Peake

Can you please answer these two questions for me:

1. When it freezes, are you able to move the curser and does the
screen saver continue moving or does it stop completely on the frozen
saver?

2. Does the machine freeze if you open up the "grapher" application in
the Utilities folder?

David.

I turned it off and this morning 'safe booted' it. What I would
like to know, can I burn discs (back-up) whilst it is in safe-boot
mode?

Ineke van Wel

Short answer ... I do not know ! Suggest you try one !

But you may also wish to try turning off Screensaver !
Go to your System Preferences and look for Desktop & ScreenSaver .
Set the screensaver to never !

Alternate to using screensaver ... you could put the screen to
sleep after a delay .

Go to System Preferences Energy Saver for that !

Now be aware that with your problem ,
putting the screen to sleep might still incur a freeze when you ask
the screen to wake .

It depends on the cause of the trouble .

Your problem could be Software or Hardware related .

If it's software after you get all your data off and backed up ,
you could try running the Panther Combo update .. it can sometimes
fix things up ... copy here

it's a 117MB download ,

or you could reformat the drive ,
then instal MAC OS X 10.3 (Panther)
and finally run the MAC OS X 10.3 COMBO update

After all that if you are still getting freezes that you cannot put
up with it possibly is a Hardware problem

Good Luck

Bob

Clive,
your mail may still be on your hard drive and only the index gone .

Check under USER - Library - Mail for Pop mail ( I assume
you are using Pop mail )

and see how big the folders are .

If you have size the mail is still there .

In your Mail drop dpwn menus under " mailbox " look for
and action " rebuild "

It may take a few minutes

Another vote for InDesign here.

As others have mentioned, I'm sure it replaced PageMaker in Adobe's

Quark would also be an option, but InDesign would be the preference.
