Ronni
Just remove the offending posts, I will remove software from computer before
sale, also if I buy a software program, then as far as I'm concerned I own it &
I will do with it whatever I think fit & that includes putting it on as many
computers that will allow it to install & run.

Re: imac for sale

2012-06-18 Thread Derek Perry
Hi Ronni,
Yes I understand where you are coming from, & I did see the instructions on how
to get a computer ready for sale.

I was just thinking that someone could take advantage of the installed software
for as long as they were able to & if & when it no longer became viable then
they hadn't lost anything because they hadn't payed for it & it wasn't theirs
in the first place, I would just be loaning it to them while it's working, just
as it was loaned to me, by the legal owner.

If anyone who buys it feels the same way you do, then surely they are free to
uninstall it.

Regards
Derek

Hi Derek,

You should not leave software installed on your computer that you don't legally
own.

If you are selling a machine to someone without the media to reinstall and
properly own that app, what happens if they have a crash or need to reinstall
the software?
Do the right thing by making really sure the buyer understands exactly what
they are getting.

Software is protected by federal copyright law.

The iMac should be completely erased and a clean installation of the OS
(operating system).
We have given instructions on WAMUG how to do get a computer ready for sale
only a few days ago.

Cheers,
Ronni

2012-06-18 Thread Derek Perry
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your enquiry the short answer is no.

Explanation:
The software discs are owned by a Wamug friend, so are not mine to sell, the
software is loaded on the machine & it is free, to whoever buys the computer &
it is all fully functional.

All I am asking is a fair price for the computer as I bought it with only the
stuff on it that is supplied by Apple.

The remote controller & the battery charger + rechargeable batteries are also
free with the computer.

If you have any other questions please ask.
Thanks
Derek

imac for sale

2012-06-17 Thread Derek Perry
Hi All,
I have an imac for sale if anyone is interested, thought I would give someone
on the list first chance before I advertise it elsewhere, it was bought in June
2011 from Maxstyle in Myaree & has hardly been used, maybe turned on once a
week, it is always covered over when not in use, I have original receipts &
boxes, is pre loaded with Microsoft Offfice 2011, Titanium toast 11 Pro, i Life
11, i work 09, Skype 5.1 plus a couple of others.

The reason for sale is that I have 3 other computer & hardly ever use this one,
so it is really surplus to requirements.

Total cost I paid for it is $3238.40 & I am open to reasonable offers, contact
me at dperry...@yahoo.com.au or (08) 9417 3357 anytime

specifications are:

iMac 27" 3.4GHz- Quad- core intel- core i7
1TB Hard drive
4GB Memory Kingston DDR3 SODIMM-1333
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2Gb DDR5 Graphics card
Apple Magic Mouse & Magic Trackpad (Trackpad unused)
Apple Wireless Keyboard
Apple remote (unused)
Apple Battery Charger, with rechargeable batteries

Daniel,
I would have to agree with James, I am not a member I only belong to the Wamug
mailing list & therefore there are only 3 questions that apply to me No 1,2
&10, the survey should only have been sent to financial members, as it is only
their opinion you are really soliciting.

Sorry James, but I would tend to disagree. Out of the 10 questions, I see 2
that are related to financial members. Question 2 (are you a financial member)
and 3 (what benefits do you think should differ).
The survey is there for a "guide" to help the committee work on a) expanding
the group and b) to get feedback for meetings and other things to do with
meetings.

So far we've had 32 responses which I think is great and will be very
beneficial to the committee to help strengthen WAMUG overall.

But the survey does allow
 partially completed anyway.

Kind regards
Daniel

iphone hacking

2011-11-09 Thread Derek Perry
FYI

Hacker finds iPhone's 'secret' panorama camera mode

A hacker has discovered that iPhones running the iOS 5 operating systems have a
hidden panoramic camera mode, the Daily Mail has reported.
In news that could delight photography-loving iPhone users but infuriate Apple,
hacker Conrad Kramer has found the hidden mode which will help users click
continuous photos while panning the camera from left to right.

"So, I found out how to enable Panorama is the iOS Camera app. Set the key
'EnableFirebreak' to YES in com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist," Kramer tweeted on
Wednesday.

Several other hackers have reportedly found the hidden mode too.

However, it's a function that requires the phone to be jailbroken and isn't
officially ready for use as Apple is understood to be testing it, the Daily
Mail reports.

Jailbreaking is a way to bypass Apple security to use apps not available on
iTunes.

Apple discourages jailbreaking its devices and says it can "severely degrade
user experience".

Its good news for the Apple Resellers who specialise in Apple products, such
as NextByte. What they have to offer is unique.

that MacBook Air but I need a bit extra RAM and Storage, can I order now and
pick it up (or have it delivered even)? My favourite record store doesn’t
always have the titles I want either but they’ll order them in for me. If a
customer made the effort to come into my store and get advice and then purchase
a product from us only for me to tell them them to go and order it online, I’d
have to be a meathead to expect them to be happy about it.

suits makes sense to me.

I think it actually makes some sense in that the reason most people go
to a physical Apple Store is to be able to walk out with a new Mac off the
shelf. Custom build-to-order configurations can't be kept in stock in the shop
so they would have to be ordered in anyway so why not order online and have it
delivered to your door?

I guess Apple takes the view that if an item needs to be ordered in,
why attempt to substitute the automated, streamlined online ordering process
from the online store with an in-store process that would take up the time of
an Apple staff member who could probably be better served helping someone.
They would still I assume help walk anyone through doing an order from the
online store if they had problems?

curious about the Belkin phone adapter, as a friend has a Belkin router & is
with iinet VOIP & has drop outs & lousy phone service, another friend has the

Re: Wireless modem recommendation

2011-08-03 Thread Derek Perry
I'm currently using that Modem/Router Netgear DG834G, with iinet Naked DSL, &
I have had it for over 3 years & in that time the phone has been terrible, even
after firmware upgrade & changing the channels that the phone uses, on the
other hand the internet is fast & good (please don't ask for speeds) & very
rarely suffers dropouts, having only had a couple in over 3 years.

OSX Lion

2011-07-22 Thread Derek Perry

Hi All,
Have been watching the comments on OSX Lion with interest, I would like to wait
until all the problems have been fixed before I install it.

But as I can get it for nothing, (new computer) if I don't get it within the
specified time, I will have to pay.

I am a newbie to Mac's.

So my question is:

If I download it now, can I keep it somewhere without installing it, & install
it, when I'm ready, seeing as it's an operating system is this possible??.

Thanks
Derek

Hi All,
Updated from 10.6.7 with combo update overnight to 10.6.8, it took about 40
minutes in all, so far no problems have arisen, I followed Ronda's instructions

Hi Mark

I think the free application hotspot shield can connect you to a US based
proxy to suit your purposes. The proxy is preset by designers of the
application and it's a pretty well used program so it should be fairly
reliable and not overly bad for security but it is still a proxy so I would
recommend just using the program when you want to use your US-based
services. Let us know how you go with it if you decide to try it.

Ruben

Having googled and not wanting to wade through the (at least first few)
pages of very dubious service providers…
Can anyone recommend a reasonably reliable free proxy service so my
computer can appear as if in the US to a service provider.

Last month I subscribed to a streaming service that has the licenses for a
number of shows that I like but aren’t broadcast on Australia TV.
Unfortunately I found that many (indeed most) of the shows I want to
watch and they advertise aren’t actually available for me to stream in
Australia as an Australian distributer has rights to them (but is either
not actually distributing them or only streaming the latest show and no
back catalogue to catch up on) so I've either got to disguise my location
as being in the US or stop waisting my money and cancel my subscription
and go back to bit-torrenting. Seems all a bit silly in this day and age
to offer a legal alternative to discourage bit-torrenting rips then to
block it due to legal issues that encourage the subscribers back to bit
torrents

Re: Which inkjet printer???

2011-05-16 Thread Derek Perry

For those who are interested,
You can get non-genuine "Tonny" cartridges from Teg computers for:
Brother, Canon, Epson, Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Samsung, Sharp, Xerox &
Dell.
I have a Canon MP990 & cartridges cost me $7.80 each, I have been using
Tonny cartridges for many years on various printers without any problems,
they are recommended by PCUser magazine.

We need to get another colour inkjet printer and "her indoors" has narrowed
it down to 3 models.

I would be grateful for any feedback, comments, complaints, experiences with
the following:

1. HP Photosmart B110A Multi-function

2. HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All in one Multi-function

3. Brother DCP-J715W Multi-function

One of our considerations is that all three will accept non-genuine
cartridges.

Hi Merv

I think there is a program called Hotspot Shield that works for US TV but
I'm not sure about BBC. You might be able to adapt that program somehow or
you could just use a generic program to run a VPN/Proxy through the UK since
that is essentially what these programs do. I haven't really tried it
myself so, unfortunately, I can't be of much help.

Good Luck
Ruben

So far my search on this topic has come up with only one application,
Expat Shield. However, it is not for Mac. Has anyone achieved success at
watching the BBC or itv online from Australia? BBC's iPlayer and itv
Player can only be used if you are in the UK.

Hope you are all home safe and sound following the long weekend.

Re: USB sticks / drives / formatting ??

Hi Peta,

Subject: USB sticks / drives / formatting ??

  Good morning all

I came in to write my query, which is a little odd, and saw the
correspondence on the Seagate external drive. This query is very similar to
mine I think, but maybe slightly different, so I have given mine a different
heading.

I have carried my USB sticks with me for many years, everywhere I have gone
basically, and quite often copied photos from my (then) Windows onto mainly
friends/families Windows, and back to my PC or to (eg) Officeworks, Harvey
Norman to copy and print photos. (Obviously, about 5 years ago this became to
and from my Mac, to their Windows or Macs).

Very recently (because I had a feeling that my USB stick was not "quite
right") I took my small external hard drive to Officeworks with a batch of
photos for printing, to learn that apparently because the formatting was done
on a Mac, I could not copy the photos onto one of their machines.

So I bought a new USB stick from Officeworks, came home, copied the photos I
wanted onto this, and had the batch of photos successfully printed.

A few days later, I copied a batch of photos from my husband's Mac and
transferred them onto my Mac. **This set of photo had been downloaded onto his
Mac by a DVD and had - I assume -come from a Windows PC).

Next I deleted that batch of photos from my USB stick. When it showed up
empty in Finder I copied 121 photos onto it, including about 30 from the batch
as in the above paragraph.

About a week later I went back to Officeworks to have my 121 photos printed.

When I inserted my USB stick all appeared well and they downloaded right up
to the point where I had put my name, address and so on. Very strange though,
it said there were 500 odd photos. Being distracted at the time because I was
due to meet someone, I assumed I had downloaded more photos than I had
realised, and just proceeded.

Then the machine threw a big hissy fit and declared "there has been a fatal
error" and shut down. The girl behind the counter did not know why and
suggested I use another machine, which I did, and all went through (still
showing over 500 photos though).

Came the time to pick the photos and off I went home and laid them out - yes
there were over 500 photos, nearly all of them from the large batch downloaded
from the DVD set, which had been deleted from the USB stick and which did not
show up in Finder. There were duplicates and triplicates of some of these.

So I believed my USB stick was corrupt, and deleted everything from it. It
is on my desk now and I believe it should just hit the bin. Before I deleted
everything showing I checked and yes, it definitely only showed 121 items.

In the future then is it necessary to format USB sticks if I am only copying
from my Mac onto other Macs? I do not think I have formatted my USB sticks
ever, certainly not for many years.

Is it going to be possible to copy photos from my Mac to a PC and/or vice
versa? I have done this in the past with no problems, though not recently.

Thanks for any suggestions, enjoy the rest of our little holiday break.

  Peta

Hi Peter,

No one can say with certainty what the upgrade to Lion will cost. The
upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard was just US$29. But that from Tiger
to
Leopard was, from memory, US$129. I have applied upgrades many times in
past

and they usually runs without a hitch. Some software and drivers may be
fagged as not running under the new version of the OS but this was more a
problem with programs that ran in Classic mode.

So there are two schools of though on what the upgrade to Lion will cost.
Some think that US$29 may be Apple's new price point for OS upgrades so
as

to keep their user base on the most recent version possible. Others think
that the US$29 was a one off lower cost because Snow Leopard was billed as
having few new features compared to Leopard -- in actuality there were
enourmous changes under the hood including 64 bit.

Cheers,
Carlo

It won't be released to the consumers at WWDC (aka sometime early June)
It will be released to DEVELOPERS at that time so they have time to
test the new OS with their products and issue their own updates and

So, I personally suspect consumers will most likely get it around
September/October

I would be happy with Snow Leopard but not that urgent that I wont

CUSTOMER ANNOUNCEMENT
Chipset Circuit Design Issue Identified
Intel representatives announced the discovery of a potential issue in one
of
the support chips to the 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors, code
named

“Sandy Bridge.” Because Intel is committed to providing our customers
products of the highest quality, we have proactively identified the
affected

part, stopped shipment of the product, and have begun to manufacture a new
version of the support chip, which will resolve this issue.

Here are two simple questions to help determine whether you need to take
further action
Was your system purchased after January 9, 2011?
You may be affected, continue reading.

You have not been affected and do not need to do anything else.

Does your system have any of these Intel® processor badges on it?
MAY BE AFFECTED: If your system has any of these badges, you MAY BE
affected. Continue to read to identify the exact processor in your

NOT AFFECTED: If your system has any of these badges, you are NOT affected
and you do not need to do anything else.

with the impacted chipset, you can locate processor number information on
your computer. If you have Windows 7*:

1.. In your Start menu, click on Start, Control Panel.
2.. In category view, click on System and Security.
 3.. Then look under System.
 4.. If your processor says Intel® Core™ i5 CPU or Intel® Core™ i7 CPU,
you

may be impacted.
5.. Finally, compare your processor to the quad-core processors with the

The number of computers impacted by the problem is relatively limited
since
the processors were introduced during the Consumer Electronics Show in
early

January. According to Intel, “The only systems sold to an end customer
potentially impacted are Second Generation Core i5 and Core i7 quad core
based systems.”

The problem will, however, potentially delay products that are already in
development.

Apple is on the list of companies that might have to delay new products
while Intel ramps up production of fixed chips. If the company was
planning
on releasing new laptop models early this year, as some rumours claim,
those

launches could be delayed by a few weeks.

I understand where you are coming from and your concern. My reply was in

against inflated music prices" & how to get around this by creating a US iTunes
Account.

Hugh Griffiths reply touched on 'market economics'.
There is a markup for the cost of business in each country.

I agree, Aperture is an Apple Software product. None of the prices on the US
App Store include sales tax. The US does not have a uniform federal VAT. The
sales taxes is different in every state and sometimes city jurisdiction.

AFAIK Hardware, Software is all subject to GST, so all the prices on the AU
App Store include Australia Government 10% GST (& possibly importation fees).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is how I understand it works. I'm certainly
no expert on GST & our Government's import duties & Customs Laws.

It might 'seem' unfair to people that don't understand (or research) all
the factors which cause the price difference.
The exchange rate is only one factor in the pricing equation.

Also, Apple doesn't set the prices, the record companies do, the Record
Companies and Rights Holders in Australia charge iTunes.
If you want to blame someone blame EMI Australia who sets the prices, not
Apple. While your at it, ask the Australian book publishers why electronic
books are so much more expensive in Australia than they are overseas and why
all titles available on overseas stores aren't available here.

Any ideas on a fix for a sad but working MacBook?

Hi
Exploring a wireless-router combined, that is,
* modem
* router (4 port)
* wifi
* voip
The WAMUG archives of 2007 show support for Netgear WG614 Router
Is this still the way to go or has the scene changed.
Machines to be serviced are latest MacBook pro and 2007 iMac.
Your suggestions please.
Merv

Re: lousy VOIP

2010-07-15 Thread Derek Perry

I'm with iinet Naked DSL & my phone plays up the same way, I've had it for
two years, it can be very good for many months then you seem to have a bad
patch, the Tech support at iinet said that you can access the router &
change the channel the phone is using, I know none of this helps you, just
letting you know it's not just Vivid, but I am glad you broadcast it as I
was going to give Vivid a go myself, will now keep away from them.

We are connected through vividwireless 'home gateway'. Speeds are good,
but the VOIP phone is lousy.

I have talked with their Tech people a number of times, but the
adjustments to settings has not improved the reception which ranges from
very bad echoes to scratchy fading out volumes. The problems are
inconsistent sometimes there are echoes, sometimes other problems.

I am thinking of going back to Teltra landline where at least the quality
is consistently good and using Skype for long distance calls. The Skype
phone calls are much better than VOIP through vividwireless.

I have tried several different phones on the Gateway.

Am I missing something here?

Intel iMac, plenty of RAM

regards

Kev

Subject: Access to a blog

Over the last three years I have been using "blognow" to create a site for
our parish. Over the past few months access has been sporadic and now I
can't get onto it at all, neither the site nor the login page to perform
edits.

http://www.blognow.com.au/home.php

The message I am getting is:
The requested URL /home.php was not found on this server.
Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) PHP/5.2.6-1+lenny8 with Suhosin-Patch mod_ssl/2.2.9
OpenSSL/0.9.8g Server at www.blognow.com.au Port 80

The actual blog is:
http://www.blognow.com.au/paternoster/
for which I get:
The requested URL /paternoster/ was not found on this server.
Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) PHP/5.2.6-1+lenny8 with Suhosin-Patch mod_ssl/2.2.9
OpenSSL/0.9.8g Server at www.blognow.com.au Port 80

Is anyone able to advise what this message means - other than you can't
access the site?

Regards
Merv

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone can help me.

I have sent jobs to the printer as normal, and nothing is happening.
The jobs are getting stored, but not printing,
and it is showing status as "stopped".
I've been using this same printer for a couple of years and have never
seen

this status.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated, as I have a heap of stuff to print
today and this is not a good start...

Regards,
Rosalyn

Hi,
I am about to buy a iMac 27inch, with either the i5 or i7 chip, research tells
me that they were having problems with yellow tinging & flickering on early
models, so obviously I don't want one of those, so can anyone tell me how to
decipher the serial no., so that I can tell when it was made, or is there
another way of telling when it was made, before I buy it.
Will be buying from Apple store in Perth Or JB Hi Fi at gateways Success.
Thanks
Derek
