ADP.NET web site problems
Hi all, Is there anyone on the list who knows a bit about the mysteries of ASP.Net. I've been asked to look at a friend's web site that's throwing some major errors and fixing it is way beyond my humble web design skills. Or perhaps refer me to someone? Some payment is possible. [FS] G4 933 Quicksilver 2002
Hi It's time for an upgrade for me so I'm offering for sale my G4 933 MHz Quicksilver 2002. The machine remains under warranty to April, 2005 and this model is one of the last to be OS 9 bootable. Includes the original Software CD set. The machine has been ultra reliable for me and is currently running as dual boot with OS X 10.3.6 and Yellowdog Linux v.3. To save your time in looking up the model specifications, the following are its main standard features: - 56K on-chip L2 cache running at processor speed - 2MB DDR SDRAM L3 cache - 133-MHz system bus - three DIMM slots supporting up to 1.5GB of PC133 SDRAM - 60GB 7200-rpm Ultra ATA HD - SuperDrive (combination DVD-R/CD-RW drive) - three 3.5-inch hard drive expansion bays - support for up to three internal SCSI drives - NVIDIA GeForce4 MX graphics card with 64MB of DDR SDRAM and ADC and VGA connectors (runs 2 monitors); supports digital and analog resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels - four PCI slots - two FireWire ports and four USB ports - gigabit Ethernet - internal modem Besides its normal features listed above, I have upgraded the Ram to 1.25 GB, added a second hard drive (Western Digital 80 GB 7200-rpm with 8 MB cache) and added a 2 port USB PCI card. Depending on OS and software configuration, I need to realise about $2200 from this sale. Evening phone: 9291 3162 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (I access this account during business hours). [For Sale] iMac Rev D
Hi I'm offering for sale my daughter's iMac (trying to put together some loot to get her into an iBook like her brother). It's a Rev D (tray loading) running at 333 MHz with 160 MB ram. We have OS X 10.3.4 on it at the moment but I think I have various flavours of OS 8.6 - 9.2.2 around here somewhere. It comes with the original keyboard and an Apple Pro mouse. I'd like to get $200 minimum for it otherwise I'll keep it for a spare. A full description of this model is at Lowendmac, http://lowendmac.com/imacs/imac-d.shtml Please call at 9291 3162 or email me if you're interested. Avagoodweekend. Larry

Mellel 1.7.5 can now read and write Word files when running under Panther. I suspect it's using Panther's own built-in routines to do this, so the word-reading capabilities are possibly no greater than that of Text Edit, but that's OK for now, because there are an additional 35 significant improvements which have been made to the program. The new list manager (ie, for creating bulleted lists) is superb (take that, Microsoft!) and worth the download for this feature alone. Check it out on http://www.versiontracker.com. I just opened a 2.1 MB fairly complex Word file in this new version. After a little bit of converting (not very long), the document opened but, - table content was there but not formatted in tables - the Table of Contents and Index were there but again not formatted correctly. - style formatting seemed alright but the styles themselves weren't imported. All in all, pretty impressive. Larry

It would be nice if the problem was this simple. It was far more serious. Here is what happened, and I am about to send off a report to (1) MacFixit and (2) Aladdin. The steps I took were as follows - 1. Paid for, and downloaded the Stuffit Deluxe update, tasking advantage of the current low upgrade price for registered users. 2. Saw (but ignored - mea culpa) the little notice following installation that in order for the software to work properly it would be necessary to log out and log back in, Instead, I thought I'd just launch it to see if there were any significant interface changes - I'm a bit impatient that way. I had no intention of using it for anything, but I couldn't see how a quick explore could do any harm. While looking though the preferences, disaster struck. The screen went dim, and the machine went into kernel panic: a desperately unpleasant sight. 3. Rebooted the computer, but the boot process would not proceed beyond the apple icon in the middle of the screen. It did not even get as far as the little spinning icon. Eventually the apple icon was replaced by a No Entry icon (a circle with a diagonal bar). This was new. 4. Bad. Very Bad. Try some tools. Disk Warrior fixed a problem with the Volume Wrapper, but otherwise found no serious problems. Didn't help. Booted from MacOS X Disk and ran Disk First Aid. No problems reported. Repaired permissions. Many repairs were made, but it still didn't help. 5. No option but a clean install of MacOS X (with archive, of course). Clean install worked fine, upgraded back to 10.2.8 (with which I had had none of the many reported problems). 6. Only problem now is, no .sit files will open. Do I have another go at installing Stuffit 8, but behave myself this time? Maybe it was just a very unhappy coincidence. Bit between the teeth, and off we go. This time, no mucking around, no exploring, just install and reboot the damn thing. 7. Back to step 3. 8. Repeat Steps 4 and 5. I have now uninstalled Stuffit Deluxe 8 (of course, that entailed relaunching the Stuffit Deluxe 8 installer and re-entering the installation code, by now a very scary exercise, just so I could get to the Uninstall option) and gone back to SD 7. 9. So far, everything seems OK. I have currently gone back only as far as MacOS X 10.2.6, but I'm not prepared to give SD8 a third chance until I can get some assurances from Aladdin that this will not happen again. I have been delighted with the way MacOS X has, for me at least, upheld its reputation as an OS which does not crash. Aladdin seem to have found a way through. This would have to be the most unpleasant software upgrade I have ever experienced. It has not done my nerves (nor, I suspect, my System) one bit of good. Time for a Bex and a bit of a lie down... There's an interesting comment (critique) by one of the Unsanity haxie people about how Aladdin implemented the AVR function in SD 8 and its potential for causing problems. http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000253.php As an aside, the update is working fine for me.

He has had to reinstall everything twice. He asked me to issue this caution to everyone who is thinking of install v8. - Matt Hi I'm not sure this is Peter's problem but this is from the Aladdin site: Friday, 3 October 2003 StuffIt Deluxe for Mac Q: I have a .sit file containing an application, installer, or script that I expanded with Stuffit Deluxe or Standard 8.0. When I try the launch the application nothing happens. Why is this? A: At the request of Apple, Aladdin made a change to how Stuffit Deluxe and Standard behaved in the above situation. Previously, Stuffit products under Mac OS X explicitly set the execution bit to be on on expanded files regardless of whether or not the file was actually a program. This was done as a workaround to a limitation of the .sit file format which didn't allow for Unix based permissions. While this workaround was for the most part working well, Aladdin was informed by Apple that it would cause serious trouble for users with future versions of the Mac OS. The result of this is that this execution bit is no longer getting set on most files (Classic Applications, and single-file--as opposed to bundled--applications with a Type and Creator set will be launchable when expanded by StuffIt 8.0 products), which means OS X applications compressed into the .sit file format, and expanded with a Stuffit 8.0 Mac product, will not launch. While this in many ways is an inconvenience, the best thing we can say is that we have been told by Apple that it is in the best interest of our Macintosh users that we do this. To work around this change, here is our advice to our users: 1. We have created a drag-and-drop applet that you can download to use that will perform the above command for you. You can download it from: ftp://forJS:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/support/JS/FixPermissionsOnPackages .sitx 2. If you are familiar with the Terminal, you can manually go to the 'Terminal' program and modify the permissions to the file by navigating to the directory the application is in (via the 'cd' command) and typing the following: chmod -R 755 applicationname.app For Developers, as a short term fix feel free to link to this FAQ and/or the applet listed above. The best long term solution is to use the .sitx format, which is designed for OS X and takes full account of Unix based file permissions while remaining compatible with StuffIt 7.x or newer. Any users who have 10.2 or later, or who downloaded the security update that Apple put out some time ago will have a copy of Stuffit Expander 7.0 or later which can handle .sitx files. Finally, Aladdin plans to release an update for the Stuffit Deluxe and Standard 8 products that allows users some form of relief to this issue. What form that relief will take and when this update will be released is not yet specified.

.Mac renewals
Hi Part of my ruminations over coffee this morning included whether or not to renew my .Mac subscription - due 9 October and costing AUD$189. Last year I took advantage of the introductory offer at US$50 (approx AUD$100 at the time). After the free AUD$100 Apple Store voucher, it was a pretty good deal :-) Some of the later freebies were also nice but they were mostly games, which I don't generally play. I do use the normal .Mac facilities - mail, server space, publishing photos etc though I have never really been able to get Backup to work. So my questions are: -has anybody seen any special offers to renew ? I have already ticked off the free Sims game although I doubt whether I'll ever play it. - are there any good deals going on the boxed .Mac subscription. I've noticed that the online Streetwise store is selling it for $169. Larry

[For Sale]
Hi It seems my telephone exchange has finally got ADSL and I'm thinking of switching from my current setup. So my satellite broadband kit is for sale - price negotiable. The full kit would suit anyone in areas where other forms of broadband may be unavailable. This gear currently serves internet to my small home network of Macs. Satellite connection is offered through a number of local ISPs, including some non-metro areas (I believe). The hardware (approx 2 years old) consists of: - Pentium 266 MX computer with 10 GB HD, 192 MB ram, ethernet card, 15 Monitor, keyboard, mouse and all driver disks etc - SkyMedia 200D PCI Card Receiver - Satellite dish These last 2 items cost about $350-$400 (new) from a service provider. The PC runs Windows 98SE quite nicely though I'm using RedHat 7.1 at the moment. If you're interested in more info, please contact me off-list by email or call 9291 3162. PS: The PC and the sat gear could be sold separately. Larry

I've been using it on every version of OS X up to 10.2.4 with no problems whatsoever. Quite the opposite - it still performs its old magic. I also run it about monthly for maintenance. Re: Discounted prices
On Monday, September 16, 2002, at 07:09 AM, Paul Weaver wrote: When a list member recently asked if there were any discounts for WAMUG members he raised an interesting subject. For as long as there have been Macs on sale in this country, those who have dealt in them seem to have adhered rigidly to a fixed price scheme, with no apparent competitiveness between dealers. I have often wondered if some sort of retail price agreement operates. Is it a breach of the trade practices act? Should some offended consumer send a query to Allan Felds and the ACCC? The argument that there is hardly any margin on macs has long been used as an excuse for non-discounting. Yet just about every other consumer device in the electronics arena can have its price negotiated between buyer and seller. Members of the working class might not know that there is a second cheaper price list for people having an association with a university. This saves quite a bit on the price in the street. Even former attendees of a university can get this discounted price by being a member of their alumni association. WA universities recognise each others members too. While I have purchased computers this way in the past I have always felt it unfair that the working taxpayers who largely pay for these institutions to exist are not permitted to access the discounted prices. My feeling is that it could be timely for some consumer to ask the ACCC for their opinion on Mac pricing. All it takes is a phone call and a follow-up letter. The number is in the phone book. Consumers should rule - OK. Regards, Paul. While I don't want to offer any particular comment on a fixed price scheme or the equity of education pricing and eligibility, I would say that after many years of Mac purchasing, I've found that the cannier (sp?) buyer will consider total purchase needs before entering a price bargaining situation. In my experience, while there seems to be little room to move on the price of the computer itself, that there often is room on other items such as printers, scanners, external drives, memory etc etc. In other words, on other items where the dealer may have a quite different margin to play with. So if a buyer knows he/she will require a printer, scanner etc as well, it seems better to negotiate this at the same time as buying the computer itself. There may be some pleasant surprises. My $0.02 (inc GST) worth. I am not not a dealer blah blah, just a consumer. Larry

First, I am running 10.1.4 on a G4 T-powerbook. I am logged in as administrator. Usually, when you install something, the installer prompts you to enter in your admin password before it launches into the install. This was the case in Adobe and other products. However with my copy of Indesign 2.0 (which is for OSX), it doesn't ask me this--instead it goes about the business of installing just as it would under OS9. Of course, during the install process I get an access denied error message, and when i click OK it tells me I don't have permissions to install this. I have been on the phone with Apple and Adobe this morning, and neither have a solution. We have tried the following work arounds (without success): 1. Log in a root user. Believe it or not, when I do this and attempt to install, the installer won't even run--claiming I need to be logged in as administrator to have the right permissions to install the program (!!??!!). 2. Create a new admin user, and try to install using their account. I had the same errors. 3. Custom install of product (as opposed to easy install). Resulted in same error. 4. Installing under OS9. Product installed, but then was unsuable due to missing files when attempting to use the application in OSX. 5. Restart the computer. Wish it to work. Log back in. Resulted in same error. In the US, when a product is on the shelf, the price marked doesn't include GST; it gets added on at the point of sale. Online purchases have mostly been tax free (if the item is shipped to a different state than the vendor) but that is slowly changing as more and more US states are requiring tax be paid to them for items shipped into their state. Some states have 0% GST, so you won't necessarily pay more, but you will most likely unless you choose to travel to a GST free state. As for the cost disparity between the US and Australia, that exists with every kind of computer equipment, regardless of manufacturer, as well as books, CDs, food, cars, petrol, and a variety of other items. (Example: Mass Market Paperbacks in the USA $5.99; in Australia $17.99. If you take into account currency exchange, the cost should be about $14...not $18.) That being said we pay about 10% of what folks in the USA pay for education, health, medicines, and training. I did the math once; what I was overpaying for my luxuries I was saving on my essentials. :-). Regards, Nathalie Good point as well, Nathalie - especially about essentials being a much better deal here in OZ. And they are. I lived in Canada some time ago and most Provinces (States) had a Sales Tax as well. On the other hand, there is also a difference with what what you can actually buy with your wages in different places. For example, when I had a look at this for other reasons, I found material showing that using Zurich as the index (=100), net wages in Sydney, for example, (probably the highest waged city in Australia) are at about 53. New York is about 97 and Chicago about 92. Net wages take into account such things as local taxes, social security etc. So, in the most general terms we in Australia are not waged as well as some other places, including the US. So the size of a person's income is less important than what that income can purchase - that is, what can that person afford to buy. On a purchasing power basis, again using Zurich as the index, New York and Chicago rate nearly equal at around 93-94. Sydney on the other hand comes in at 75 ( London at about 70). Again this is based on net figures taking into account taxes etc. So along with our generally lower wages, we cannot buy as much with them. Of course there is also the question of the value of the Australian dollar. Looking at some figures (April 2001) from the Economist's Big Mac Index, it seems that the Oz dollar is undervalued by some 40% in global terms. Finally, there are the normal business rip offs (pardon my outburst) and business deals in operation. For example, two years ago I needed to buy EndNote software. It was downloadable from the developer's site for a sum of money I don't exactly recall. EXCEPT if you lived in Australia and one or two other countries, I think. If you lived in these countries you had to deal with the local/regional exclusive distributor and buy a boxed copy. Currency fluctuations and other things may have changed since that time but when I did purchase, it cost me around AUS$100 more to buy it. I think that Apple can be so US-centric that while they may have the bigger picture sorted out in some ways, it doesn't mean much to me in terms of pricing. So that's my 0.02 for the moment. I can't even get connected to the ICQ server. Can someone tell me what's the problem and possible a solution to rectify the problem. Thanks in advance. Derek Hi I'm not trying to preach here (and others may have a more immediate solution to your problem) but my understanding of OS 9 upgrades beyond 9.1 is that they are primarily for Classic compatibility and optimisation for OS X. If you're not using this version of OS 9 for Classic (OSX ) I'd wonder why the upgrade unless your Mac shipped with a version of 9.2x. Perhaps other members of the list can enlighten further on this. (3) Pull-down date menu from the menu bar clock DOES NOT obey this. It persistently shows the date in US format. (4) An application like Quicken 2002, which uses scheduling, seems to be obeying the US date format. Dates come and go and automatic entries are not being entered because the date has apparently not been reached. Nothing I have tried has fixed this. I've disabled Network Time settings, played around with every kind of Date setting I can find. Wierd. A friend also has the cosmetic problem of the menu bar date being in US format; not sure if he's had this functional-related problem too. Anyone else? Anyone got a solution?
