Alex, if you choose to get another inkjet printer, Inkman have an interesting
cartridge deal where you get a free Canon printer included - choice of 3. See

Re: Printers.......

2011-10-12 Thread Brett Curtis
I have a Samsung 6210FX. The toner cartridges seem to have less than the
normal one would expect from a Laser.
About a year ago, I started having problems with printing anything with
graphics on it. If I want to print 10 copies, it will print one then shut
down, then start up again and print the next and so on.
I rang their service section and they wanted to update the firmware (last time,
they did from their end) This time they couldn't do it that way and sent me a
USB thumbdrive
which cannot be loaded from a Mac. The tech was stumped. I cannot even do it
through VMware Fusion either. Hence I will probably follow Daniels advice
about buying a Brother.

Hi Alex

Always an interesting argument the Laser versus Inkjet. Definitely the running
costs of a laser will generally be cheaper then that of an inkjet over the same
period of time.
I've supplied both (laser and inkjet) for lots of my clients and use both here.
My personal preference when it comes to printers is Epson and Brother.
I use an Epson laser for pretty much all my main printing and it runs like a
dream. And I've barely had to replace toners at all (and no, they generally
don't clog the same as inkjets do). Unfortunately Epson don't do laser's
anymore. If and when I have to replace it, I would go for a Brother. As
mentioned I've supplied a lot of units to my clients and they just keeping on
going. They're great units.
But for "photo printing" we also have at home a 6 colour inkjet multifunction.
We print something out of that about once a week at least, so the cartridges
"keep moving". Again, it just works. And never had a problems with it.
So it generally comes down to what sort of things you may be printing. If it's
general day to day stuff, then Lasers are great. You pay a bit more upfront but
your running costs are lower. (though this may change,..will get to this in a
second,...).

You also want to consider how it's going to be connected. A lot of units now
are USB and Ethernet, and some also Wi-FI as well. If it's Ethernet then you
can plug it in to your modem/router and every one can see it without it having
to run off just one machine. If it's got Wi-Fi then it only needs a power point
and can sit anywhere in the house. And everyone can have access to it. (great
for some of the Wireless all in one Multifunction units that allow you to print
and scan to any machine, regardless where it's located in the house.

OK,..now as mentioned. Epson have (or about to) bring out a new range of
printer, which they've been working on for a while. It's the "standard" inkjet
printer, but they're saying the running costs for it now are the same or better
(up to 50% better) then that of a Laser. And they're an all in one. So they can
be so interesting choices as well.
Generally if you ever think you want to do photo printing then some of the
inkjets will get better quality. But if it;s "just colour" then a laser is
still great. (And for most things Colour Laser Printing is still very good
quality.

The ranges you can view here:-
Brother -
(Most all in ones will generally be fairly large units.)
I just sold a client an MFC-9320CW and it works really well. (I did it a bit
cheaper then it's RRP of $929, so they were happy there toolol)

Epson range -
The new models I mentioned are the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4540 and WorkForce
Pro WP-4530.

I've been selling both Epson and Brother for about the last 10 years,..and to
be honest I find them very reliable, easy to use and the software great. The
Epson laser I've got sits in the Office and goes to a lower power mode so is
very quiet and just wakes as I need it. I think in the 6+ years I've had i've
had to replace maybe two toners (?) (Black and Blue as I use a lot of blue on
my invoices).

That would be my recommendation anyway :) Printers can be one of those things,
that each has a particular one they like :)

Hope that helps.

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: Printers compatible with latest Mac OS

2009-12-17 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Stephen,

Did you try my suggestion that I sent yesterday?
HP Scan Pro is no longer supported, but the new installers include HP Scan
which does work in Snow Leopard.
Also note that HP Device Manager is not supported under Snow Leopard and will
not be returning. Most of the functionality can be found inside of HP Utility.

"Download new updated Drivers from HP for your C4480 All-In-One Printer. It
does say OS X 10.6 compatible.
This seems to solve the problem but scanning is now a self contained
application and not part of the HP photosmart studio software.

This is the Direct Link for your C4480:

 "

Some people prefer to use "Preview.app" or Image Capture.app instead of the HP
Scan.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Printers compatible with latest Mac OS

2009-12-16 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Stephen,

I think you are still trying to scan using the HP Scan Pro application, that
application no longer works in Snow Leopard.
If you want to continue using this version, you need to use one of the four
methods to scan:
1. Preview.app
2. Image Capture.app
3. In Print & Fax preferences
4. In the printer proxy.

There are more detailed instruction in the document here:

OR:
You could try the new updated Drivers from HP for your C4480 All-In-One
Printer. It does say OS X 10.6 compatible.
This seems to solve the problem but scanning is now a self contained
application and not part of the HP photosmart studio software.

Cheers,

I went into Hardleys in Busselton today and they must have about 30

on the box that they work with 10.5. Some say 10.3.x. or 10.4.x and
upwards with icons of MaxOs and Universal.

If someone as experience on this can you please advise on a good
reliable brand that does work with Leopard? Im looking for colour
(separate inks I think) and with scanning and copying. I have a fax
and I download my images direct to my MBP.

There are also a few now that work wirelessly including bluetooth!

kind regards and thanks for any help

I can't speak for Lexmark, but any printer made by any of the "Big
Three" (Epson, Canon, HP) should work fine. Many printer drivers
released for the Mac now are CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System)
drivers, and the support for CUPS is supplied by Apple rather than the
printer manufacturer.

I have just bought a nice new Canon MP970 Printer/Scanner on the
weekend. The printer worked fine from Leopard with the supplied
software out of the box, but I had to go to Canons site and download
the Leopard drivers for the scanner and network support. They also had
updated drivers for the printer, both Canon and CUPS varieties,
although the printer worked just fine using the (10.4) drivers
supplied on the CD.

Hi Ken,

I have one and it does everything right. Has six separate ink cartridges
and they get used pretty quickly. There seems to be no alternative
cartridges so you must buy Epson. Somewhere around $20 each from my local
PO. But the quality is great.
It has attachments built if for slides and transparencies for scanning and
it will print on CDs.
Printer drivers work on Mac with no problem.

I use my Brother Laser 2040 (cheap) for B&W daily printing - cheaper and
faster.
Hope this helps.

Re: Printers

2007-07-03 Thread Brian scott

Hi Ken,

I've been using one for printing on my DVD's for several months now.

The Epson software is adequate for what I want for printing DVD's
but if it
doesn't suit you, there are other applications to choose from such as
Disc Cover

Apart from the occasional paper print and scan that's all I've used
it for.

At times it will report a paper jam while trying to print a DVD or it
say the
DVD tray isn't in correctly when there's nothing really wrong but it
does the job quite well.

And once while it had the original cartridges in it blocked up
temporarily but it soon cleared

didn't do it again and hasn't done so since I changed to new cartridges.

Apart from those very minor gripes I'm quite pleased with it.

Hopefully someone will comment on the RX650's ability to scan film as
I've not tried that yet.

Hope that's some help

Brian

Will the ReadIris OCR software work with an Epson 1260 Photo scanner?
Most sites seem to have it packaged with the HP peripherals.

The only problem I have seen with it is a tendency to grab more than

low-end here, right?

Having bought an HP for my folks the other day, they seem quite cheap
(well, ok, the printer is free, you're only really paying for the ink
cartridges), and it works with OS X.

Also if your printer has the space for extra ram, max it out, I pulled the
ram out of an old LCIII (32Mb DIMM) and put it into my Brother HL1440 so now
it has 34Mb and I can now print PDF's with all the graphics at full speed.

Even though the computer (be it Mac, Win, *nix) does the processing of the
data to raster, the more memory the more lines you can hold :o)

I strongly recommend that before you buy, you actually see the printer
working while connected to a computer that has the same OS as yours. In my
experience, not all HP and Epson printers have drivers available and the
printers do not work in any way that is acceptable (would you believe 15
minutes per page a little while ago for one?) despite claims on the box.

Most new HP Ink Jets have a new contact system which "damages" the cartridge
(the claim the new system gives better print head holder to print head
contact. But this limits the amount of time the cartridge can be taken out
and put back in (not good if you swap between colour and large black and
photo etc)

I have a 5400C and only have one grip (could be my firmware revision) when
running on USB (both in winblows 2k and FreeBSD) the first scan is great,
does not take long once the lamp warms up, but subsiquent scans it sits for
around 2 -4 minutes before proceding to scan. I prefer the older scanners,
but the ones after the 5400C may have fixed this issue.

I loved HP a long time ago, I am just retiring a HP 4L (due to a bad memory
module and old age (it is ~ 10 years old and has done over well over 900,000
pages which is good going by todays laser printers standards))

Unfortunately I have no direct experiance with Epson, I do know that for a
while they beat Canon and HP hands down on photo images (no one else cam
close) but things have probably changed.

Regards,

Kat.

You'd need LaserWriter 8 on the LC III (gasp, someone's actually
still using one of those).

netatalk would then need to be configured to publish an
AppleTalk-based printer spooler for the printer, and to handle the
Postscript interpretation (not sure that the printer you've mentioned
has Postscript).
