The Gay Deceiver
>I didn't like seeing Floyd sympathizing for her through the window. But hey I >didn't write the episode and if I >had it probably wouldn't have had that >mushy ending. I didn't see Floyd as being so much immersed in sympathizing with Madeline as I see Andy breaking the law, taking advantage of a friend by invading the home of someone who trusted Andy to take care of it. As pointed out on IMDB episode review - Andy broke the law above breaking the trust of a town resident. Would you ever trust Andy again with the keys to your home? I sure wouldn't. Strange things happening in episodes
Considering that over the number of years the show ran, they had something like 35 writers? It's not unusual to find so many inconsistencies. Like the door to the left of cell number 2 and multiple Floyds, what year Andy and Barney graduated, etc. I also don't believe the writers sat back and said to themselves, "Hey, lets write confusing episodes, no one will ever see these shows after the summer reruns so it doesn't matter how we write them, right?" Too funny…story about what if Don Knotts had shown up on Dick Van Dyke Show instead of Danny Thomas? If you’ve never seen “It may look like a walnut” episode on The DVD Show, the rest of this will go right over your head (quote Barney). Danny Thomas Popped up on the "Dick Van Dyke Show’s Classic "Walnut" Episode on ME TV Well, what if Barney Fife had shown up Instead? Incredible as that sounds, this blurb from the September 22, 1962 edition of the syndicated "TV Scout" newspaper column contains the tantalizing suggestion that Carl Reiner may have at least toyed with the idea of involving both Don Knotts AND Andy Griffith in an earlier draft of his classic sci-fi parody. I suspect it was a fleeting notion that was soon forgotten. Or perhaps last minute schedule issues forced an eleventh hour rethink that prompted Danny Thomas to step into the role? Either way, breathes there a fan of either series who wouldn't pay a considerable sum to see Deputy Barney go toe to toe with Rob Petrie, armed only with a sack of walnuts! Here's the text of that item as it appeared in newspapers on September 22, 1962: TV SCOUT September 22, 1962 The cast of The Dick Van Dyke Show is talking about a particularly wild episode Carl Reiner has written for the show’s second season. “According to what I have heard,” Mary Tyler Moore told TV Scout, “Dick has a dream in which everyone looks like a walnut and talks like Andy Griffith or Don Knotts. I love spotting TAGS actors on Perry Mason. Sometimes I’ll yell at the TV, “Hey Chuck!” (Willis Bouchey plays a judge in 23 episodes) or “Mr. Jack…son!” (Richard Bull Bill Lindsay), or “Hey Andy, it’s that college kid.” (Ruta Lee) Or “Aunt Bee, just call the man.” That last one is The Case of The (or TCOT) Crimson Kiss. Francis Bavier plays an aunt and comes to visit her niece who is getting married. She finds her niece and niece’s roommate passed out on their beds. They had consumed some poison. The Aunt calls Perry (see how often characters appear in town and already KNOW Perry Mason). Perry tells her to stand by, he’s sending over his personal doctor. Why she didn’t “Just call the man” and dial for an ambulance. The two girls could have died in the amount of time to call Perry, get his advice and “stand by”. My favorite shout out confession is with Dabbs Greer (in 8 Perry episodes) and J. Pat O’Malley (We’re pooling our resources). Jay Novello, born Michael Romano (August 22, 1904 – September 2, 1982) Novello began his 47-year acting career in the 1930s, performing as a character on radio. He played Jack Packard on the Hollywood version of I Love a Mystery in the 1940's. He also had roles on Escape, Crime Classics, Lux Radio Theater, Suspense, and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Novello was limited mostly to bits in minor films, one of his notable being the officious Spanish consul in Frank Capra's Pocketful of Miracles (1961). Among his other movie credits are roles in such films as Beneath the 12-Mile Reef (1953), The Mad Magician (1954), Lisbon (1956), The Pride and the Passion (1957), This Rebel Breed (1960), The Lost World (1960), Escape from Zahrain (1962), The Man from the Diner's Club (1963), and Sylvia (1965), among others. Novello's first role as a guest star on television was on CBS's The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show in 1951. He also appeared on I Love Lucy, Maverick, The Andy Griffith Show, The Donna Reed Show, and others. He died of lung cancer in Riverside Hospital, North Hollywood, California, in 1982, aged 78. Yes, that scene does get cut but it’s a great scene and I’m sure Jeff is right. Cringe worthy?
If you cringe watching Leon walk about town and Opie rummaging around the house unattended, please save yourself from watching Perry Mason shows. Cigarettes still lit, tossed to the ground, even from open windows in cars, women wearing furs, convertible cars with tops down, loaded guns in glove compartments, plentiful home wet bars unlocked. You’ll go into shock at how simple life was at one time. But try to bring yourself back to reality and remind yourself that lessons that were imparted on the show and the fact that stories were not restricted to sanitizing affects, kids still learned lessons. We could dig ourselves a hole trying to analyze why women weren’t taken seriously (think Aunt Bee and her “gang” retaliating when the men wanted to get their nails trimmed by the “sexy” new lady at Floyds). We haven’t reached that level so please, let’s not tear the whole show down around itself, because I’ll bet anyone two Yankee dimes and a bowl of homemade strawberry ice cream, you still laughed out loud when Opie and his friend were trying so hard to make up his bed. TAGS actors on Perry Mason
I’m hooked on Perry Mason. Get it about half dozen times a day between channels MeTV and FeTV. Our shoplifter turned proud wife Lurene Tuttle is the defendant 4 times and questionable other characters many more. Good Ole Mr. O’Malley, as in “Hey Chuck!” is a judge 23 times. But my favorite Mason character is Dabbs Greer. He plays many characters and when he’s the killer, he delivers my favorite whining confession. “Yes, I killed the big gas bag.” When TAGS is not on, entertain yourself with Perry, Della, Paul. Hamilton Burger the DA and Lt. Tragg. Great cast to work with many TAGS actors. Harriet, the chicken thief, but never a murderer ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
RE: TAGS links on Perry Mason
You’d be surprised at the TAGS actors on Perry Mason. Francis Bavier is a doting “Aunt”, unlike her bad guy role in westerns. Also, last night we see the ever present in Mason cases Stuart Erwin, Tom Silby. And Anna Belle Silby, Lurene Tuttle has played bad guy, victim and accused…even a shoplifter (Who knew???). MeTV claims to have created a list of Perry Mason Stars Before They Were Stars. Well, no, actors like Ken Curtis (Festus on Gunsmoke) started his career 20 years before he pops up as an accused on Perry Mason. I love Willis Bouchey (Mr. O’Malley….or Hey Chuck) as the judge overseeing many cases. Casey Adams, from the Horse Trader episode is in many as well. Yes, I agree with Paul – don’t put much stock in MeTV claims. They’ll even flip a photo to make some useless point. RE: TAGS actors on Perry Mason
I’ve been hooked on Perry since it came to MeTV and FeTV. Amazing, the number of actors that appear in both. My favorite confession is by Dabbs Greer. “Yes, I killed the big gas bag!” Priceless. His appearances include being a murderer, victim and an innocently accused. He pulls off a drunk act that could easily rival Otis Campbell on a bad night. Bavier is in one, and bless her heart, she’s not accused or the killer, unlike when she’s in a western. That toughened up “warden” style in her really shines as a bad gal. Ruta Lee is in several as well as Sue Ane Langdon and Julie Adams. Julie starts out being sent to prison to await execution (Perry loses) and is quite afraid of Wednesdays, 10AM to be exact, as most take place at that time and day. Perry pulls off his usual tricks, shutting down “Immaterial, incompetent and irrelevant” objections. Guess when she’s released.. Yep.,. A Wed. at 10AM. Mayberry…it’s everywhere!
