I think the T stands for Tonto. Rumor is that his grandfather was a

Citizen's Arrest

2023-07-24 Thread Ken Anderson
I am reading the book *The Wild Hog Murders *by Bill Crider and I just came
to a part where someone asks the sheriff about making a citizen's arrest.
Here is the dialog.

"Whatever. Anyway, you said it yourself back at the jail. You're not a
peace officer. You can't arrest anyone."
"A citizen can make an arrest if he runs into a wanted criminal."
"Not a good idea," Ballinger said. "I saw something about that on *The Andy
Griffith Show."*
Rapinski looked at him. Ballinger grinned.

Goober's Transformation

2023-07-23 Thread Ken Anderson
Have you ever noticed the amazing transformation that Goober underwent
while living in Mayberry? When we were first introduced to Goober, he
appeared with his cousin Gomer, and he was a rather simple man who said
"Yo" and "Judy, Judy, Judy. Judy", and he could sew his fingers up.

But over the course of time, Goober changed. He got his job at Wally's,
and then went on to actually own the business. He dated a PHD psychologist,
and then dated Flora. He went on to become the drivers education teacher
at Mayberry High, even though he had never finished high school. He also
became the office Deputy Sheriff of Mayberry after Andy left. He also
became an elder at the church and was on the town council, and helped
author a new comic book.

Not bad for someone who started out saying "Yo" and "Judy Judy Judy Judy."

Last night, in another Twilight Episode, Clara Edwards appeared as a maid.
And yet in another episode of Twilight Zone, Colonel Harvey was the captain

TAGS in my Church

2021-11-15 Thread Ken Anderson
This past Friday I had the honor and privilege of doing my Mayberry
presentation for our senior fellowship group at church. Due to Covid, it
had been 20 months since I last presented. This presentation was the 95th
time I had done it. We had 50 people attend. Our Director of Church Life
told us that he had been organizing senior events at churches for the past
fifteen years, and this was the largest crowd he has had. So I think that
speaks volumes about the interest that seniors have in TAGS and Mayberry.
The group was so engaging, and we had so much fun. They loved it when I
brought out two bottles of Colonel Harvey's Indian Elixir ( one empty ) and
I accused our assistant pastor of spiking the apple cider. This morning was
our coffee group, and this group continued Friday's enthusiasm with many
questions and comments for me. Such fun.

Phone call with Malcolm Tucker

2021-09-22 Thread Ken Anderson
I never could understand why Malcolm Tucker could not make a phone call.
Certainly, the entire
town of Mayberry was not on one single party line. All Andy would have had

right, it would mean that anytime
someone in Mayberry was using their phone, no one else in town could make a

Curtailing Activities

2021-08-15 Thread Ken Anderson
I have decided to curtail my Mayberry Guru activities by quite a bi. I am
ten years older than when I bought my squad car and I will be 75 in a
couple of weeks. It is just too much to be running around in parades and
car shows dressed in my uniform when it is so hot. We have done 21 events
thus far and have just a few more car shows planned. We only did three
parades. The parades are really hard on my squad car, so that is one
reason we will not be doing parades anymore, with maybe a few exceptions.
I can still enjoy driving the squad car around Eau Claire and interacting
with folks without spending hours at a time at a show or parade.

61 Years of Mayberry

2021-08-01 Thread Ken Anderson
In just a few weeks, I will be celebrating my 75th birthday. Sixty-one of
those years I have spent watching *The Andy Griffith Show.* Some people
still ask me what is so appealing about an old black and white television
program. So I thought I would share what it is I see when I watch *The Andy
Griffith Show* and what makes it so special to me.

When I see Andy and Opie sitting on their front porch having one of the
father and son talks, I see the father I never had. When I see Ellie Walker
behind the soda fountain at Walker's Drug Store, I see Mr. and Mrs. Weix
behind the soda fountain at the drug store I visited many times during my
childhood. When I see Floyd cutting hair and talking with the town cronies,
I see myself sitting in Vircks' Barber Shop listening to the men talking
while I am reading comic books.

When I see Miss Crump telling Opie that he should go outside and play
football rather than studying, I see my seventh and eighth-grade teacher,
Mr. Elden. I recall riding home with him after we played a basketball game
against Athens. He was laughing and encouraging us by saying we would do
better next time. We had just lost 88-0. The referee stopped the game after
the third quarter. For back then, basketball for kids was just a game. A
game we played for fun and not for trophies.

When I see Mr. Foley working in his little grocery store, I remember Mr.
Krueger, who rigged a contest in his grocery store in Dorchester, so a
little boy would win a brand new baseball outfit. That little boy happened
to be me. Mr. Krueger knew my family did not have the money to buy me such
things.

When I see Opie and his friends fishing at Meyer's Lake or playing in
Crouch's Woods, I see my friends and me fishing at the old Mill Pond in
Dorchester or playing in Rau's woods outside of town.

These are the things I see whenever I visit Mayberry, for, like little Opie
Taylor, I was very fortunate to have grown up in a small town at a time
when life was much simpler. My life back then was far from being
idealistic, yet I would not have wanted to grow up in any other place or
any other time.

I just finished a novel, *The Shortest Journey,* by Hazel Holt, and I will
share a quote from her book. “Memories are the most important things we
have when we grow old. We must treat them with care so that they will last
out our lives.”

I understand that I have a selective memory. I choose to remember the good
times and friends that are long gone, but I also choose to toss out the bad
memories. Why hang on to those bad memories that only cause sadness when I
can keep the good memories that bring me so much joy?

Jailbirds in Mayberry

2021-06-23 Thread Ken Anderson
I always laugh while watching TAGS when I see how quickly people are put
into jail without a hearing or anything. They are just brought it and put

Malcolm Merriweather after his bike accident.

Mr. Dave for loitering and vagrancy.

All the townspeople when Barney was left in charge for a day.

Jim Lindsey for playing his guitar in front of the funeral home.

These are just a few. Can you name others?

Then Andy and Barney were repeatedly called to the Boone house when they
were fighting, but they never took them to lock up.

2021-06-11 Thread Ken Anderson
Every time we hit a heat spell I cannot help but think about the people of
Mayberry who always seem to wear long-sleeved shirts and ties and even
suits, even when the weather was very hot.

The one occasion that really comes to mind is when Andy, Aunt Bee, Opie,
and Goober were returning to Mayberry after attending the Auto Show in
Raleigh. I never could understand why they would all be wearing their dark
suits while riding in a convertible for a long trip home. Why wear suits
just to return to Mayberry? Being the owner of a number of convertibles, I
know first hand that you do not want to be wearing a suit when riding in a
convertible with the top down on a hot summer day.

Andy did the same thing when he borrowed Aunt Bee's car to go to Raleigh to
meet with the lady lawyer.

parades to locations in our immediate area and the same for car shows. I
have been doing this for ten years now, and the novelty of seeing my car
and "Barney" is wearing out. It will still be fun, but like they say, "Do
things in moderation".

My Voice Teacher

2021-02-24 Thread Ken Anderson
I am having a lot of "Mayberry moments". I developed some speech and
swallowing issues, and part of my treatment is seeing a speech therapist.

Today when we started up, she worked on my breathing, having me take deep
breaths through my nose and letting it out through my mouth. When I was
done with that, I asked her if she would give me an A in breathing. She
gave me this strange look, so I had to explain how Barney got an A in
breathing.

Then we worked on warm-ups for talking and singing, and I had to do "ah ah
ah ah ah ah". I told the therapist that the people in the next room would
wonder what was ailing me. So, I again had to explain about Barney warming
up in the courthouse.

Not sure if I will be ready to sing for a while, but maybe she will give me
a bottle of honey and water to squirt in my throat.

There is a very strange sequence of events in the episode with Gentleman
Dan. Aunt Bee is preparing an elaborate supper for Gentleman Dan and she
leaves with the tray of food for the courthouse. After she leaves, Andy
starts to tell a Jack Story to Opie. Opie loses interest, so Andy tells
him to go up to bed. Andy reminds him not to stay up and look at his
picture books. So Opie goes up to bed. A bit later Aunt Bee comes into
the courthouse with the food and Opie is with her. Now how does that
happen when she left for the courthouse and then Opie goes to bed.

Curious curious.

Christmas Greetings from The Mayberry Guru

2020-12-23 Thread Ken Anderson
I would like to wish all of you at the Digest a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy and Healthy New Year.

If there ever was a time we needed TAGS it was in 2020. During my 74 years
on this earth, I have never experienced anything like this past year.
Between the terrible pandemic and very divisive political climate, it was
so good to be able to sit back and visit Mayberry whenever the whim hit me.

We chose not to do any events this past season. At our ages, my wife and
decided it was best not to take any chances. As it turned out all of the
events we normally do were all canceled. We would normally participate in
between 80-90 car shows, parades, community festivals, and presentations,
so it was indeed a very strange summer. I only used one tank of gas in my
squad car all summer, when normally I would fill up about every ten days.

Hopefully, 2021 will find us returning to some normalcy and we will once
again be able to enjoy our regular routines, although I have decided to cut
back some on parades. I will not be traveling as far around the state next
year.

Have a very wonderful Christmas, everyone, and may 2021 bring you much
happiness, good health, and lots of friendships.

The Manicurist

2020-12-02 Thread Ken Anderson
Janet's post about the Bookie Barber brought to mind something I always
wondered about with Ellen Brown, he manicurist. How was she going to make
a living if she only worked on tips? When Andy had his manicure he gave
Floyd money and then handed Ellen a tip, which looked like maybe a
quarter. How was she suppose to pay rent, buy her meals, and her expenses
on that kind of money?

Floyd really had it easy getting money from the Bookie Barber and the
Mayberry Manicurist without doing a thing.

Mayberry and Guards

2020-11-26 Thread Ken Anderson
I have often wondered why the Mayberry Bank and Weaver's Department Store
had Asa as a security guard and night watchman. I have done banking with
many different banks, both in very small towns and a city of 60,000. Yet,
I had never once seen a security guard in any of the banks in all my 74
years. So, it seems very unlikely that the Mayberry Bank would need a
guard. I guess that explains why Asa slept while on guard.

I also have also shopped at virtually hundreds of department stores over
those same 74 years, and again, I don't think any of them ever had a night
watchman.

Just something that has always been preying on my mind.

This and That

2020-06-28 Thread Ken Anderson
Our life here in Eau Claire, WI, continues to follow the stay at home
recommendations and social distancing. So, it has been a very quiet summer
thus far with no parades or car shows at all. There are a few being held,
but being my age, I am not taking any chances, so we are passing them up.
I miss seeing all our car show friends and we really miss the fun of
parades, but one must do what one must do.

I am happy to announce that our city of Eau Claire has just been named the
3rd best small city in America in which to live. I can certainly attest to
that.

I have only put 10 miles on the squad car thus far this summer and even
less with our convertible. I had a new stereo put in the squad car as well
as a nice fan system to keep us cool, but now I don't use either. But
hopefully, by fall, we will be able to do a few things safely.

I do continue to write my monthly column for seven publications around
Wisconsin, and I try to write about Mayberry and TAGS every other month.
It gives me something to do and I get a lot of nice feedback.

I hope everyone is staying safe. Fortunately nothing ever changes in
Mayberry and we can continue to visit our friends there whenever we choose.

Fwd: Learn a Month Magazine

2020-06-11 Thread Ken Anderson
I just received my June copy of "Learn a Month Magazine". I could not
believe it when I saw that their feature story was all about spiders.

   - Spiders are arachnids, not insects.
   -
   - Other members of the arachnid family include scorpions, mites, ticks
   and harvestmen.
   -
   - Spiders have 8 legs while insects have 6.
   -
   - Spiders don’t have antennae while insects do.
   -
   - Spiders are found on every continent of the world except Antarctica.
   -
   - There are around 4 different species of spider.
   -
   - Most spiders make silk which they use to create spider webs and
   capture prey.
   -
   - Abandoned spider webs are called cobwebs.
   -
   - Most spiders are harmless to humans but a few spider species, such as
the black widow, can bite humans and inject venom. Deaths from spider bites
   are rare however.
   -
   - An abnormal fear of spiders is called ‘arachnophobia’.
   -
   - Tarantulas are large and often hairy spiders, the biggest species have
been known to kill mice, lizards and birds.
   -
   - Most tarantula species pose no threat to humans.
   -
   - The largest species of tarantula is the Goliath Bird eater.
   -
   - Giant Huntsman spiders have leg-spans of around 30cm (12 in).

Spiders

2020-06-08 Thread Ken Anderson
I have never understood why Gomer was so afraid of spiders. They really
are cute little things. When I was a kid I once found a spider that had
all its legs cut off. I got some glue and I was able to glue all the legs
back on, but the spider still had a hard time walking. So I got some
toothpicks and I made eight little crutches for it to use. He had a hard
time, but after a lot of practice he was able to walk. But it was hard for
him to reach his web, so then I made a ladder out of popsicle sticks and
that really helped.
So you see, there really isn't anything to be afraid of with spiders if you
treat them nice.

Mayberry's Dumbest Crooks

2020-05-31 Thread Ken Anderson
I would like to nominate the following for being Mayberry's Most Stupid
Crook. Please vote for your choice and feel free to nominate others for
this prestigious recognition.

1. The Bookie Barber. The dumbbell set up his bookie operation in Floyd's
Barbershop which was right next door to the Sheriff's Office. He has his
friends show up every day carrying suspicious black bags. Then he and his
partners exchange money right in front of a large window in the middle of
the day when anyone could see them.

2. The Counterfieters. These two dumbbells set up shop right on Main
Street and then they hire the sheriff's aunt to work for them. They only
have one printing device. Plates for counterfeit money. Why they would
hire a receptionist when they have nothing for her to do is just plain
dumb. They could have printed their money in any old abandoned shack.

3. The Movie Company Bank Robbers. Why on earth they went through that
entire charade of being a movie company was just plain dumb. They had no
trouble getting into the bank at night, so they did not need any help at
all. All they would have had to do was sneak into town at night and
break-in. Why risk everything by getting the sheriff and his deputy
involved.

4. The Phoney FBI Caper. Again, why go through that huge charade of being
with the FBI and putting on a phony ceremony where the mayor, the sheriff,
the deputy, and the entire town is involved. If the safe was so easy to
crack, why not just sneak back into town some night and open it. Dumb Dumb
Dumb.

How is Everyone

2020-05-02 Thread Ken Anderson
I hope this post finds all of you safe and well during these very unusual
and challenging times` It is almost beyond belief as to how much our lives
have been change in the past several months. We have no plans to do any
car shows or parades anytime soon. All of our May events have been
cancelled as well as many through June. Even when things begin to reopen
we will probably avoid any crowds. I have managed to live 73 years with no
serious health challenges, so I don't think now is the time to tempt fate.

How fortunate all of our Mayberry friends were living in Mayberry. There
illnesses were usually brief and not very serious. Clara had her bursitis,
Howard death with a deviate septum, and of course the Mendelbright sisters
had to deal their feet falling asleep. Otis was fairly healthy too, except
for his falling down, and Andy was strong as a horse except for a bought
with a flu bug. Barney of course had to deal with his low sugar count and
an occasional vein that would stick out, but for the most part,
Mayberryites were very healthy.

I shudder to think how they would have dealt with the pandemic, being they
are such a social and close knit community. It would have been very
challenging for them to practice social distancing and I would hate to
think of their covering up those wonderful smiles with face masks.

In any event, stay safe and healthy everyone.

Our Bad Experience

2020-02-15 Thread Ken Anderson
My wife and I were in a bad car accident last Tuesday night on the way to
have supper with car show friends. I was making a left turn on a green
arrow when a young 19 year old kid ran the red light and T-boned us on the
rear passenger door. Our new car with just 2800 miles on it was totaled.
Luckily we escaped with multiple contusions and bruises. No torn calcium
or damage to the patula oblagonda. We did spend three hours in emergency
getting checked out and we both had doctor appointments yesterday. We are
very sore and my wife looks like I took a baseball bat to her.

I was extremely disappointed with the police. Unlike Barney with Malcolhm,
the officer did not run around blowing his whistle and he did not grab the
other driver by the scruff of his neck and drag him down to the police
station.

Funny thing was that in a city of 65,000 I was rather impressed that there
were six squad cars responding plus the fire department. The fireman
recognized me right away as did the police officer. The witness to the
accident turned out to be an employee of the sheriff's department. When
the town truck came the driver looked at me and said, "At least it wasn't
your squad car."

We are picking up our new 2020 Kia Optima in about an hour.

Band Uniform Colors

2019-11-02 Thread Ken Anderson
The probable reason for different colors for the band uniforms is that the
band is the "Town Band" and not the "School Band", thus they might have had
different colors. That's my theory for whatever it is worth.

My Old Small High School

2019-10-27 Thread Ken Anderson
Oh, how times have changed since the days of TAGS and Mayberry.
I graduated from a small high school and it remains very small yet today.
The school has had an armed Resource Officer for a few years now, and it
was in our hometown paper this week that it has been decided that they
would now be keeping an assault rifle at the school. It will be in a
locked safe in the School Resource Officer's office and it would be
accessible only through his fingerprint.

I got such a sick feeling in my stomach when I read that and I realized
what the world has come to.

Is it any wonder that so many of us are hanging on to the wonderful way of
life that is portrayed on TAGS. And I am old enough to actually remember
living during that period of time.

Andy sure got crotchety at times in the color episodes.

He was opposed to Aunt Bee learning to drive.

He was opposed to Aunt Bee running for the city council.
He was opposed to Aunt Bee wearing a wig.
He was opposed to Aunt Bee opening the Chinese Restaurant.
He was opposed to Aunt Bee getting a job.

I bet he would have been opposed to Aunt Bee wearing slacks too.

While watching TV last night a commercial came on for one of our Senior
Care places. It was showing some of the amenities of the facility and it
showed residents in their large gathering room watching TV. And what do
you think they were watching? Yep, good old TAGS.

We have our final event on Saturday. My college alma mater's homecoming
parade. It will be around 35 degrees. B. We ended up doing 73 events
this season and we raised another $850 for my home town library.

This and That

2019-09-21 Thread Ken Anderson
Yes, David Burch, it was nice to meet you and your wife at the Comic-Con
event. I wish we would have had more time to visit. Over the years I have
been able to meet quite a few of the Digest members as they travel through
Wisconsin. Some were able to come to our house for a nice visit and others
were able to meet for lunch. So if any others every come near Eau Claire,
WI, please let me know.

Next Sunday we will be taking part at the Warrens Wisconsin Cranberry
Festival. Tens of thousands of people come to the little village of about
350 for the two-day event. We will once again be participating in their
parade and also interacting with visitors for several hours before the
parade.

Summer Winding Down

2019-09-12 Thread Ken Anderson
Well, folks, summer is winding down here in Wisconsin which means my
Mayberry events will be slowing down too. I am giving my Mayberry
presentation this afternoon at a health care facility. But a car show for
tonight has been cancelled due to a lot of rain.

To date, we have done 65 events since the first of May and we have about a
dozen more to do before we put the car away. It has been a fun summer yet
challenging at times due to so much rain and trying to attend events that
overlap. We have a parade, a car show, and a special Comic-Con event this
weekend and the weather is supposed to be perfect.

National Night Out

2019-08-07 Thread Ken Anderson
We participated in a National Night Out event in a neighboring city. We
had a huge crowd with lots of kids and many activities. We had a steady
stream of kids all night who wanted to play our games and see the squad
car. The only downside was: Not one police officer there even said hello
to us. They would walk right past our tent and not even say hi or
acknowledge us. It was as if we were not even there. This happened the
entire night. It wasn't as if we were horning in or anything, as the
police department contacted us and invited us to take part. Most of the
officers are young guys, and I think they don't appreciate the humor with
Barney. But we have four more events this week, so we will continue to
have fun.

Quite a Day

2019-07-29 Thread Ken Anderson
We had an interesting day on Sunday. First, we went and did a parade in a
neighboring town. Then we went to a country club where I was being filmed
as Barney Fife for a wedding video. Then my squad car got hit by a golf
ball while at the country club. When we went home we drive the town of
Lafayette with the squad car, and shortly after that five people were shot
to death in that very town.

Class Reunion

2019-07-15 Thread Ken Anderson
I had the wonderful experience of attending my 55-year high school
reunion. I attended a small school or our class was a very close-knit
group. It was great to see so many friends from my growing up years.
However, it was a bittersweet night as we last a number of classmates since
our last reunion five years ago.

However, unlike Barney and Andy, I did not have to deal with any of my
former high school sweethearts. I wasn't worried about breaking up any
marriages and I didn't have to spend time trying to remember who was who.

I was the entertainment again so I created a Remembering 1964 nostalgic
Powerpoint program. It went over very well as I brought back a lot of
memories from our wonderful years together.

Good News and Bad News

2019-07-05 Thread Ken Anderson
The good news is I am getting the Digest again. The bad news is I am
getting indigestion again. But maybe reading the Digest will help cure my
indigestion. I think it is from too many weenies, brats, and hamburgers at
all the car shows and parades.

Would you believe I was a parade on the 4th and when a man saw me I heard
him tell his young son that I was Barney Rubble? Guess I still have some
educating to do.

But we are having so much fun again going to the many events. I have a
total of 6 presentations to do this summer too, so we are very busy. I
continue to write my monthly Nostalgia Column and it now appears in 5
different publications each month.

Hope all are having a wonderful Mayberry summer.

{Spam?} Life in Eau Claire is Busy

2019-06-02 Thread Ken Anderson
Well, our car show and parade season is well underway here in Wisconsin.
It got off to a rather rainy start with four events being cancelled in one
week. But this weekend we did one car show and two parades.

Everytime I start to think of maybe cutting back on the parades something
happens to change my mind. Today I was doing a parade in a small town and
the parade is a very large one that attracts a lot of very enthusiastic
people. As I was walking along interacting with the kids and handing out
some citations, a little boy of about four years old came up to me and
shook my hand and said, "When I grow up I want to be just like you." That
one touched me.

Here is the link to my June column if you are interested. It is entitled
"Fishing Mayhem in Mayberry"
.
https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/179900_90ce43fe837d495d999654d52c738968.pdf

I have two major presentations to do in the next few weeks. I have been
asked to speak on the history of my small hometown village at the annual
Dorchester Days Celebration. So I have put together a powerpoint
presentation for that and then I have been asked to do a program
"Remembering 1964" for my 55th high school class reunion. So I am working
on that.

Otis Makes a Novel

2019-05-27 Thread Ken Anderson
I am reading a novel called "Deck the Hounds" by David Rosenfelt and a

he looks like he is going to fall down, so he wants to know why they call
him the "town drunk".

kind of fishing theme within the episode. I threw away my list after I
wrote the article, but I am pretty sure it was 26.

How many episodes can you name that were fishing related?

Mt Airy and Opioids.

2019-04-07 Thread Ken Anderson
Our Sunday morning newspaper had a rather upsetting story about the
overdose deaths attributed to using opioids. It talked about the increase
in overdose deaths in North Carolina. It mentioned that the problem is
even bad in Mt. Airy, and it went on to explain that this was the
birthplace of Andy Griffith and how Mt. Airy was the inspiration for the
innocent small town of Mayberry. How sad that this the new kind of
publicity that Mt. Airy is getting.

On a personal note, I have been on opioid pain medication for over ten
years. I was under close supervision with my doctor so he kept the dosage
rather low. However, my doctor moved to Florida and I was assigned a new
primary physician. He would not prescribe the opioid for me any longer so
he weaned me off my medication. As I was going off my Tramadol I noticed
my vision was changing. For the better. After about a month I no longer
had to wear my glasses as my vision had improved so much. I did some
research and found that 1% of people who were using the opioid Tramadol
could experience vision problems. After talking to my pharmacist and eye
doctor, we decided it was the opioid that was giving me such blurred vision
for so long.

While I still have a severe peripheral vision loss and macular
degeneration, I am pleased that my distance vision has improved so that I
do not need to wear glasses. I am hoping it will continue to stay this way.

Mrs. Rayburn -Mrs. Wiley

2019-03-22 Thread Ken Anderson
Regarding Mrs. Rayburn on Leave it to Beaver, it was very common back then
to have teacher/principals. I had that position in two different schools.
In one I taught three periods a day and the rest of the day I was the
Middle School Principal. In another smaller school, I taught full time for
a 5th and 6th-grade classroom and was also the building principal.

I am sure Mrs. Rayburn got burned out with all her duties, so she left
Mayfield, changed her name, and retired in Mayberry.
