Smells

2016-10-16 Thread Marguerite Marshall
I'd guess my favourite smell would be of Emma Watson's pies cooling in her
windowsill in one of the firts episodes. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.

Or the pleasant whiff of Aunt Bee's and Ms. Edwardses roses in one of the last
episodes. I'd ask for one to put in a jar of water on my kitchen table.

The pungent aroma of a little boy named Opie Taylor who'd played outside all
day with Johnny Paul, Trey, and his friends. If you raised a boy you know what
I mean.

The malodorous reek of Moonshine, aka white lightening, on Otis would be hard
to miss on a Saturday night.

The aroma of witch hazel coming thru the door of Floyd's Barber Shop

The smell of raw fish coming from Andy, Opie, and Barney at the end of the
opening day of fishing at Myers Lake.

The gamy stench of possum, raccoon, dirt, and woods from an unwashed Ernest T
Bass

But there was a smell all through the town that lasted all 8 years of TAGS. The
sweet smell of freedom. Where Emma Watson was free to go jaywalking, Opie could
run all over town and into Kelsey's woods playing and nothing bad ever happened
and Flip Conroy, a Black man could be treated as a man period and not a Black
man. Freedom for Aunt Bee, Thelma Lou, and the ladies of Mayberry to walk to
town un accosted as they did their shopping at Foley's or Mrs. Luken's,
Walker's Drugstore, etc. A town where the sheriff was free to walk around
without a gun. Now these are aromas you wouldn't smell today. At least not
pleasant ones.

MAyberry

2016-07-02 Thread Marguerite Marshall
I read the Ron Howard bio From Mayberry to the Moon...and Beyond and I highly
recommend it. The book has nothing but good to say about our Opie and it covers
his life pretty well. Book was written in 2006 or thereabouts so it isn't
recent but we all can be proud of both Ron and his family, esp. Rance.

Watching Patricia Heaton (The Middle and Everybody Loves Ray) cook today on the
Food Network and she mentioned that she grew up just outside of Cleveland in a
small town "similar to Mayberry". Another celebrity who seems scandal free
giving credit to growing up Mayberrylike.

Books

2016-06-22 Thread Marguerite Marshall
Has anybody here read Ron Howard: From Mayberry to the Moon...and Beyond? It is
next on my to be read list. Does it tell good things or does it recycle trash
from the tabloids like he secretly smoked dope or hated Howard McNear? He
didn't as far as I know.

I'm reading the Don and Andy book and I'm enjoying it very much. If somebody
wants to read a bio that tones down the bad parts of life that we all have read
My Lucky Life in and Out of Showbiz the autobiography of Dick Van Dyke. He
hints very loosely at his alcoholism but blames nobody for the breakup of his
firts marriage and would have you believe he got along perfectly with everybody
he ever worked with.

As to the Don and Andy book, I look at it this way. Does anybody really believe
that they were like Andy and Barney in their real life? Was Elizabeth
Montgomery a witch? Did Lucy and Desi marry until death did they part? No, of
course not. Everybody has faults and everybody makes mistakes. Should de Vise
have shared them? Maybe, maybe not but by sharing he made it a true biography
not some watered down version that sounded unrealistic making you wonder what
was left out.

Just my opinion. I enjoyed the DVD bio, am enjoying the A&D one, and look
forward to the Ron Howard one. And, again, if anybody has read the Howard book
let me know how it was. Thanks

Mayberrily yours,

Marie

Just purchased
Ron Howard: From Mayberry to the Moon...and Beyond: From Mayberry to the

by Beverly Gray. I hope she doesn't trash talk him. Have any of you read it? I
think it starts with his first role as a babe in his mama's arms in a movie she
was in and it ends with the Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. So it isn't brand new.

Next book is controversial written by Don K's brother in law. Some liked it,
some were disappointed I shall keep an open mind as Andy always did.

New book I'm reading

I'm reading Talk of the Town (A Welcome To Daily, TX book 1) on my Kindle. One
of the characters is a Hollywood type who describes Daily as "town that looked
like Mayberry-well-preserved-on-a-studio-backlot". Even the town deputy is
Barney like, handcuffing innocent people, locking his keys in the squad car,
etc. it's so nice to see Mayberry mentioned in a positive way.

Another mention when Mandalay (the Hollywood type starts thinking about her
boss and why she was sent to Daily in the firts place.
"You’ve dropped me on a secret reconnaissance mission into The Andy Griffith
Show. Barney and Gomer just finished hanging Amber’s news on a big fat sign

Where would u live

2016-02-18 Thread Marguerite Marshall
If you could live anywhere in Mayberry would you prefer
A living in town like Andy or Thelma Lou
B living in the country like Jeff Pruitt or Sam Jones
C a boarding house like Barney had with arms Mendlebright
D deep in Kelsey's woods like Ernest T or The Darling Family
E near Kelsey's Lake like Emma Watson in the early episodes
F none of the above I'm moving to Raleigh

I'd want to live in town or if not on the lake like Emma. Maybe both since I'm

2016-01-25 Thread Marguerite Marshall
Don't it just clench you right in the heart to see Barney disparaging Rafe
Hollister's singing in the first quarter of the show, only to support him once
the mayor decided Rafe was not to represent Mayberry in the musicale? Barney
could have been portrayed as a poor sport throughout but he wasn't and that's
why we love him. Good old Barney, bless his heart, he can't sing. He just can't

Mayberry sighting

Reading Angel Lane by Sheila Roberts and one of the three main characters
compares her hometown of Angel Falls, WA to Mayberry. Another compares it to

That started me to thinking. Did Mayberry have a Mr Potter? Somebody who truly
didn't care about others? Even Ernest T Bass had his good moments as did Ben
Weaver. What are your thoughts?

Fife/Phyfe

2015-02-19 Thread Marguerite
After seeing today's episode about the descendant of Nathan Tibbs and hearing
Barney claim relation to Duncan Phyfe saying "sooner or later someone had to
spell it right" I decided to look up Duncan.

Wikipedia had this:

Born Duncan Fife near Loch Fannich, Scotland, he emigrated with his family to
Albany, New York in 1784 and served as a cabinetmaker’s apprentice.

By the time of his marriage in 1793, he appears in the New York directories as
a "joiner," but by 1794 he called himself "cabinetmaker" and had changed the
spelling of his name to Phyfe.

So maybe Barney was related to Duncan after all.

Also, I love how in this episode Barney is so sure he is the descendant of
Nathan yet when the real descendant (Otis) is named barney stands behind him
100%. Just one of many reasons to love ol' Barn.

County Nursing in Mayberry

2014-07-02 Thread Marguerite
It appears to be that there's no benefit in personally knowing the county nurse
in Mayberry. They never offer help when needed.

Case in point 1) Opie pretends to be sick so his paw won't go out with Nurse
Peggy. Why didn't she suggest coming over to check on him? Why didn't Andy ask
her to?

Case in point 2) Mrs Sprague fakes illness so that Howard can come home early
from his date with the new county nurse. Does she offer to check on Mrs
Sprague? No, they drop her home then Howard, Andy, and Helen go over to check
on Mrs S.

Fishing

2014-04-15 Thread Marguerite
Opie and Andy were fishing in "Manhunt" when the boat began leaking.

He and Barney were fishing with "the jinx" when the boat began sinking.

he and Opie went fishing in one episode and later in the episode took Nurse
Peggy fishing, too.

Opie took his fishing rod to go fishing with his friends and ended up
confronting the new boy in town.

Opie and Andy went fishing with " ol eagle-eyed Annie" and met Mayer Stoner on
his way to fish. Andy traded "E E-A" to the mayor for a bed jacket Aunt Bee had
her eye on.

Opening day of fishing season where Howard caught the giant fish making Floyd
and Goober jealous.

Opie and Arnold were going fishing when they found Jack Nicholson's baby at the
courthouse

Every episode began with Andy and Opie going down to the fishing hole. But does
not count, I know.

The episode where A and B were being honored because Mayberry was crime free.
He was at Floyd's with the mayor talking about killing carp and the newspaper
lady was outraged. Then the mayor mentions Pike and Mayer Pike says we don't
like them either

Opie tries teaching Aunt bee to fish in the first episode.

Andy took the wealthy fathers from Opie's summer camp fishing and they enjoyed
it.

Opie had caught a fish in the episode where the new mayor (Stoner) came to
inspect. Andy put the fish in a drawer and the mayor found it.

Favorite line from the show and alumni sightings

2014-03-22 Thread Marguerite
The one I think about often is the one Barney tells Opie: Ya see, Opie,it ain't
always the material things that make a person rich. There's love and
friendship. That can make a person rich, too. May not be 100% accurate but my
memory is shot. The comic lines are great also. Mayberry gateway to danger!

Today I was watching The Apartment with Jack Lemmon & Shirley MacLaine. The
visiting minister from "What's Your Hurry" (David Lewis) plays Mr Lemmon's
boss. One of them anyhow. Otis Campbell, (Hal Smith) played a Santa Claus at a
bar where J L was drowning his sorrows. Love seeing Mayberry everywhere, don't
you?

May not be 100% accurate but you get the drift.

Mayberry and Avon

2014-03-11 Thread Marguerite
I received the new Avon catalog today and on the back page they were offering
the two new Avon Naturals body was on sale this catalog only $1.89, next
catalog, $6. One is scented Peach the other Gardenia Blossom.

At that price maybe I should order an extra one of the G B and have it sent to
Andy and Barney. Or would it make Andy sad to think f how he lost Miss Ellie?
Frances the" quite a girl" might like one, too.

Mayberry is everywhere, isn't it?

Ron Howard

2014-03-09 Thread Marguerite
ITA Janet. Ron Howard was as good as Shirley Temple or Jane Withers, two child
actors from the 30's. If you look at those Olson twins, they often seemed to
look off camera so one can assume they were being coached. Or Gary Coleman. He
would say something cute then kind of grin or make a face as tho he was saying
"aren't I cute?". In addition, RH didn't have the one liners and catch phrases
everybody has today. Even Richie C would, when angry, call someone "buck oh"
and when in love sang "Blueberry Hill". The Olson twins as Michelle would say
ooh, you're gonna get it mister" or "sister" depending upon who it was. The
Griffith show didn't do that. Except for Leon and his pb&j sandwiches nobody
did the same thing more than a few times. It made things more realistic, IMO.

These opinions are just mine and may not represent the opinions of the rest of
the board.

Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 14, Issue 192

2013-07-07 Thread Marguerite
Water and air are free. Gomer said so several times to Andy and Barney.

Somebody, I think Gomer, wanted a peppermint with a pink middle to win a free
one.

Miss Ellie gave Opie a free ice cream cone tho Andy ended up paying for it.

Using The Squad Car

2013-05-22 Thread Marguerite
Remember when Barney complained about Andy using the squad car when not on
official business? He thought he was talking to a college girl? How come he
didn't mention all the times that he and Andy used the squad car on their
dates? If he and Thelma Lou were at the duck pond (why would they want to go
there at night? You can't see the ducks) or he and Juanita at Morelli's
(everybody goes there) would he just leave them and go off on a call or would
he drop them off at home first? I assume that he and Andy, whichever was on
duty, told Sarah where they'd be in case of emergency.
