Smells
I'd guess my favourite smell would be of Emma Watson's pies cooling in her windowsill in one of the firts episodes. Makes me hungry just thinking about it. Or the pleasant whiff of Aunt Bee's and Ms. Edwardses roses in one of the last episodes. I'd ask for one to put in a jar of water on my kitchen table. The pungent aroma of a little boy named Opie Taylor who'd played outside all day with Johnny Paul, Trey, and his friends. If you raised a boy you know what I mean. The malodorous reek of Moonshine, aka white lightening, on Otis would be hard to miss on a Saturday night. The aroma of witch hazel coming thru the door of Floyd's Barber Shop The smell of raw fish coming from Andy, Opie, and Barney at the end of the opening day of fishing at Myers Lake. The gamy stench of possum, raccoon, dirt, and woods from an unwashed Ernest T Bass But there was a smell all through the town that lasted all 8 years of TAGS. The sweet smell of freedom. Where Emma Watson was free to go jaywalking, Opie could run all over town and into Kelsey's woods playing and nothing bad ever happened and Flip Conroy, a Black man could be treated as a man period and not a Black man. Freedom for Aunt Bee, Thelma Lou, and the ladies of Mayberry to walk to town un accosted as they did their shopping at Foley's or Mrs. Luken's, Walker's Drugstore, etc. A town where the sheriff was free to walk around without a gun. Now these are aromas you wouldn't smell today. At least not pleasant ones. Sent from my iPad ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

MAyberry
I read the Ron Howard bio From Mayberry to the Moon...and Beyond and I highly recommend it. The book has nothing but good to say about our Opie and it covers his life pretty well. Book was written in 2006 or thereabouts so it isn't recent but we all can be proud of both Ron and his family, esp. Rance. Watching Patricia Heaton (The Middle and Everybody Loves Ray) cook today on the Food Network and she mentioned that she grew up just outside of Cleveland in a small town "similar to Mayberry". Books
Has anybody here read Ron Howard: From Mayberry to the Moon...and Beyond? It is next on my to be read list. Does it tell good things or does it recycle trash from the tabloids like he secretly smoked dope or hated Howard McNear? He didn't as far as I know. I'm reading the Don and Andy book and I'm enjoying it very much. If somebody wants to read a bio that tones down the bad parts of life that we all have read My Lucky Life in and Out of Showbiz the autobiography of Dick Van Dyke. He hints very loosely at his alcoholism but blames nobody for the breakup of his firts marriage and would have you believe he got along perfectly with everybody he ever worked with. As to the Don and Andy book, I look at it this way. Does anybody really believe that they were like Andy and Barney in their real life? Was Elizabeth Montgomery a witch? Did Lucy and Desi marry until death did they part? No, of course not. Everybody has faults and everybody makes mistakes. Should de Vise have shared them? Maybe, maybe not but by sharing he made it a true biography not some watered down version that sounded unrealistic making you wonder what was left out. Just my opinion. I enjoyed the DVD bio, am enjoying the A&D one, and look forward to the Ron Howard one. And, again, if anybody has read the Howard book let me know how it was. Thanks Mayberrily yours, Marie Sent from my iPad ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Mayberry books
Just purchased Ron Howard: From Mayberry to the Moon...and Beyond: From Mayberry to the Moon...and Beyond Kindle Edition by Beverly Gray. I hope she doesn't trash talk him. Have any of you read it? I think it starts with his first role as a babe in his mama's arms in a movie she was in and it ends with the Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. So it isn't brand new. Next book is controversial written by Don K's brother in law. Some liked it, some were disappointed I shall keep an open mind as Andy always did. New book I'm reading
I'm reading Talk of the Town (A Welcome To Daily, TX book 1) on my Kindle. One of the characters is a Hollywood type who describes Daily as "town that looked like Mayberry-well-preserved-on-a-studio-backlot". Even the town deputy is Barney like, handcuffing innocent people, locking his keys in the squad car, etc. it's so nice to see Mayberry mentioned in a positive way. Another mention when Mandalay (the Hollywood type starts thinking about her boss and why she was sent to Daily in the firts place. "You’ve dropped me on a secret reconnaissance mission into The Andy Griffith Show. Barney and Gomer just finished hanging Amber’s news on a big fat sign across Main Street, and Aunt Bee is standing on the curb. My cell phone has attracted her attention. Now she’s watching me. I'd guess the longest career to be Ron Howard. Certainly the most successful tho the majority of it is as a director, not an actor. Otherwise I'd guess the Albertson siblings. Last night's episode
Don't it just clench you right in the heart to see Barney disparaging Rafe Hollister's singing in the first quarter of the show, only to support him once the mayor decided Rafe was not to represent Mayberry in the musicale? Mayberry sighting
Reading Angel Lane by Sheila Roberts and one of the three main characters compares her hometown of Angel Falls, WA to Mayberry. Another compares it to Bedford Falls without Mr. Potter. Fife/Phyfe
After seeing today's episode about the descendant of Nathan Tibbs and hearing Barney claim relation to Duncan Phyfe saying "sooner or later someone had to spell it right" I decided to look up Duncan. Wikipedia had this: Born Duncan Fife near Loch Fannich, Scotland, he emigrated with his family to Albany, New York in 1784 and served as a cabinetmaker’s apprentice. By the time of his marriage in 1793, he appears in the New York directories as a "joiner," but by 1794 he called himself "cabinetmaker" and had changed the spelling of his name to Phyfe. So maybe Barney was related to Duncan after all. Also, I love how in this episode Barney is so sure he is the descendant of Nathan yet when the real descendant (Otis) is named barney stands behind him 100%. Just one of many reasons to love ol' Barn. Sent from my iPad ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

County Nursing in Mayberry
It appears to be that there's no benefit in personally knowing the county nurse in Mayberry. They never offer help when needed. Case in point 1) Opie pretends to be sick so his paw won't go out with Nurse Peggy. Why didn't she suggest coming over to check on him? Why didn't Andy ask her to? Case in point 2) Mrs Sprague fakes illness so that Howard can come home early from his date with the new county nurse. Does she offer to check on Mrs Sprague? Ron Howard
ITA Janet. Ron Howard was as good as Shirley Temple or Jane Withers, two child actors from the 30's. If you look at those Olson twins, they often seemed to look off camera so one can assume they were being coached. Or Gary Coleman. He would say something cute then kind of grin or make a face as tho he was saying "aren't I cute?". In addition, RH didn't have the one liners and catch phrases everybody has today. Even Richie C would, when angry, call someone "buck oh" and when in love sang "Blueberry Hill". The Olson twins as Michelle would say ooh, you're gonna get it mister" or "sister" depending upon who it was. The Griffith show didn't do that.
