Over the years the show ran, you could almost say that Andy Griffith played three separate Sheriff Taylor characters. There was the jovial country boy from Season One, the voice of reason in Seasons 2-4, and a bit more serious in Seasons 5-8. Obviously there is some overlap in the evolution of the three. I see a lot of similarities between the 5th season and the color years, as many of the showrunners had departed TAGS for Gomer Pyle, USMC. A couple weeks ago in one of his excellent Mayberry History posts, Randy Turner mentioned something in the episode "Bringing Up Opie" that occurred only once in TAGS: Otis actually being formally charged with public intoxication before being sentenced. Watching that episode recently, I think I found another unique moment: after Opie leaves the abandoned mine, he walks down the dirt road, kicking a can, until meeting an older boy who lets Opie have some apples and sit in the back of the truck if Opie lets him kick the can. That maybe 20 second scene is totally silent, except for the background music (which I think is the only time I heard that particular music in any episode). The older boy is clearly talking to Opie - but we don't hear anything. This small scene reminds me a lot of the old, original "Our Gang" movies, before they became "talkies". I wonder if this was intentional, as a sort of tribute to those old films, or just that the writers or director were influenced by "Our Gang", which they probably watched as kids. Do any of the "trained observers" out there recall any other "silent" scene in TAGS like this one? (I'm not counting the episode where Gomer joins the Marines, and Sgt. Carter polishes his boots, etc. which is also "silent", because I think of that episode as the first "Gomer Pyle, USMC" episode.) Joe from G.I. Joe, If I am understanding your question correctly I believe the episode when Ellie is running for city council (silly idea) and the men folk decide to show them wimmin how silly an idea it is, shut down their credit lines at the department stores, you see, but don't hear the exchanges with the women and the store clerks along with musical instruments playing along with the scene. The other day while musing, I came up with this TAGS trivia question. There are at least 3 instances of residents of Mayberry being played by more than one actor. Let's see if anyone can get all 3, or even surprise me and think of more. Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man. Well my friends, I managed to survive a very emotionally packed night at my 50 year high school reunion. So much fun reliving old times with old friends whom I have known since I was 6 years old. A few tears were even shed by this overemotional guy. We were a class of 81 and we have lost only 6 thus far, so we have indeed been very blessed in that regard. The group just loved my Special Reunion Mayberry Presentation I did. I received a standing ovation and so many wonderful comments following. Some of the people there had not watched a TAGS episode since it was on TV back in its hay day. They especially enjoyed the clip of Barney and Ramona's reunion and that beautiful quote The tears on my pillow bespeak the pain in my heart. We had kept my presentation a secret and the looks I received when I arrived in full uniform and gun belt was precious. But word soon spread that I was not a real policeman and that was when the fun began. Time for me to purchase a new laptop. I was unable to load any of my videos and music clips at first and I was just sick as it would have ruined the entire evening. However, I was able to get off by myself and do some work and was finally able to get things going. Good thing I tested everything out when I got there and before I was to begin. Sometimes those electronal marvels can be a real pain in the patoot. I noticed the cord they provided had thin wires so I suspect that was the problem. I've answered this question many times in the past, and I'm happy to repeat for this particular question. (what job do I have in Mayberry) I work for a telecommunications company in real life. Im Mayberry I would work for the Mayberry Bell Telephone (aka May-Belle). At night and on some weekends I would be Sara's backup. She has to sleep sometimes, so I take over the switchboard. People still say Sarah Get me I just set them up without explaining it is not Sarah. Its a good way to find out what's going on..who's talkng to who etc...and yes I've even heard the voice or Mr. Schwamp, a rare treat. I know who is moonshining, who is datin, who's going to win an election, and when out of town guests are coming in. So I've explained the inside part of my job. The outside part is, I get to team with another Mayberry favorite. I go out and help build new lines with Mr. McBeevee. Ocassionally I get to walk in the trees with him, but more often I work with him to run new drop wires to homes and Businesses. I also collect coins from the payphones, like at Walker's Drugs, and I do a litte repair. Its pretty easy to keep up May-Belle because we only have on line that leaves the town. You probably know that the Mendlebright sisters give that a good test every Sunday afternoon. When I'm on the switchboard, I put my feet up they talk so long..and you guessed it.. my feet fall asleep. Barney keeps asking me and McBeeVee to install a hotline from his room to Andy's house (like a Bat-phone!) But Andy keeps saying the only Hotline in Mayberry is needed at the ice house so someone can call and remind them to turn the light off. Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 14, Issue 263 Subject: Lying
I don't know how this topic relates to the Andy Griffith show but I feel I must address it. The topic is copied and pasted in the middle of this text. My commentary follows ( Ken, You don't have to post this and maybe you better not, just thought you'd find it interesting and will only increase your faith. Like it did mine. That's a good thing right? Earlier this year I started studying Leviticus in a group with an orthodox rabbi. He claimed there was no such thing as a white lie. Ok I could except that coming from the orthodox Judaism viewpoint. After all I was raised in NY where there were many conservative Jews around me. But then when he insisted that God actually caused the holocaust, and not just allowed it to happen, well that's when I left the group in dismay, and realized why so many Jews had given up that faith. Then I also recalled that the orthodox Jews are still waiting for their savior, realizing that orthodox viewpoint. Did some more review thinking related to what they taught me about Jesus in Catecism. It all came together once again and firmedup even more my faith, in Jesus. Patty+) I sincerely doubt you were in a conversation with an orthodox Rabbi, it sounds like perhaps some fringe Hasidim, if in fact that is what he said.. Conservative Jews are not Orthodox Jews, there is Hasidim, Ultra Orthodox , Orthodox, Conservative and Reform. If you wren raised around Jews it sounds like perhaps you saw them but didn't really know any on a personal level. I also am amazed that you stateso many Jews have given up their faith. What is your source for this? What are you statistics for this? Did you know them personally? I also don't understand why you would categorize this under the topic lying. I sincerely enjoy this digest but enjoy it for the Andy Griffith show not for religious meanderings. Again I can not figure out how this relates to the Andy Griffith show but felt I must respond. I know that TVLand has been a hot topic on here at times, but I have to say that I had a great six weeks this summer with Andy on the channel each weekday morning, then I had a great day cleaning house all day today while listening/watching Andy. I have played my DVD's all day on a holiday such as this, but there's just something to having the show on actual TV. In the Christmas episode, it dawned on me that the jail appears not to have glass on the windows in the cells. Mr. Weaver stood on a box and held tight to the cell window bars, but there was no glass in sight. VERY INTERESTING THREAD as there seem to be regional terms that vary. I spent a few growing up years in the Kentucky area and recall the term cutting but also recall the term picking in Gainesville Georgia early 60's and recall seeing the barns with tobacco drying in that manner. A few years ago (about) I saw some still like that going through Tennessee. We were behind a tobacco farmer with leaves on his truck on the highway and I wanted to follow to see where he was going and sure 'nuf there was the barn and poles. Re: rspe...@nc.rr.com While I understand the term in Kentucky is cutting tobacco, because I think with burley tobacco the entire stalk is cut - in North Carolina tobacco (flue-cured, not burley) is picked or cropped a few leaves each week over a four to five week season in the summer as the leaves partially cure on the stalk - in the old days the picked or cropped leaves were tied to sticks and hung in barns on tier poles because they were at different levels in the barn - those of us who had to climb to the top of the barn to hang the sticks of tobacco referred to them as tear poles because it would be so hot at the top of the barn our eyes would run water Yup I saw that too, and L.O.V.E. that show Re :flyfishe...@hotmail.com This reference and usage was recently on the Moonshiners TV show on the Discovery Channel when Tim Smith hides his 'shine in a tobacco field and then worries that it will be discovered since 'they'll be pulling tobacco soon'... ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Chuck; I found the short wave questions interesting because I'm a big short wave fan. They had them back in the 60's, Daddy had one. I had one in the late 70's which had to have an antenna attached outside so they obviously took some artistic license with that episode. However now you have me on a quest to find out and to get another shortwave. I found the MiG-25 (with battery)was designed in the very early 60's, and first flew in 1964, so if that episode was post 64 it might have been real. Now I want another shortwave. Aunt Bea, I agree with you,the music get's sadder every year and perhaps part of that is our sadness in seeing it gone. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Patty, It's true, a lot of underage young men lied about their age and joined the armed forces in WWII. I had an uncle that ran away and joined the Navy at 16. He claimed to be 18. I was watching the History Channel just last night and they mentioned the youngest to do that was 12 years old. Before being discovered as being underage he had won two medals. Andy Griffith was extremely well written, all of the elements of the Greek tragedies, Andy Griffith, I love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke. All of these shows hold relevance today and each has some dated segments. Those segments do not take away the over all value of the shows which are a reflection on an America of our past and in many ways a better one than what we have today. Reflection on our past is extremely important for without a past, there is no present and can be no future. I read with equal interest your comment on Disney and vampires. The Sazerac is a local New Orleans variation of an old-fashioned cognac or whiskey cocktail, named for the Sazerac de Forge et Fils brand of cognac that was its original prime ingredient. The drink is some combination of cognac or rye whiskey, absinthe or Herbsaint, and Peychaud's Bitters; it is distinguished by its preparation method.[2] It is sometimes referred to as the oldest known American cocktail,[3] with origins in pre–Civil War New Orleans, Louisiana, though there are much earlier published instances of the word cocktail.[4] The defining feature of the Sazerac is the preparation using Peychaud's Bitters[5] and two chilled old-fashioned glasses, one swirled with a light wash of absinthe for the slight taste and strong scent.[6] The second chilled glass is used to mix the other ingredients, then the contents of that are poured or strained into the first.[7] Various anisettes such as Pastis, Pernod, Ricard and Herbsaint are common substitutes for absinthe when it is not available; in New Orleans Herbsaint is most commonly used.[8] NANCY ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

I think I would tend to agree with spelling out Five, as it was such a momentous occasion; however, if Barn had been presenting it to someone, we all know that he can be a little...well...tight , at times, and if he had to pay for each letter engraved, why, he just might opt for the more economical 5. Several kind folks emailed me reminding me that Mayberry folks did indeed have charge accounts and did not always pay cash. I purposely did not mention that in my post about credit as I guess I did not consider that as a debt as the folks would most likely have paid their accounts in full at the end of each month. I know in our small town all the merchants offered free charge accounts for the convenience of their customers. Of course everyone was expected to pay the account in full at the end of each month as my mother always did, so I don't think people would have run up very large amounts. I love it when people respond to me about things I post. It means someone is actually reading them and is interested enough to continue the conversation.
