Andy the Law Breaker - Harriet, the chicken thief

2024-10-05 Thread H S
Thank you, Harriet, for replying to my post. Yes you're right, lots of no no's
going on in that episode. If Barney found out what was going on you could be
assured half the town would be in jail including the Mayor. I'm not surprised
so much for Andy following his heart and not his head since Andy ( like Barney
) has so much kindness behind those eyes.

{Spam?} Andy on Carol Burnett

2023-01-02 Thread Joe
Last night on MeTV, Andy Griffith was the special guest on a November 1969
episode of "The Carol Burnett Show". He opened the show with his best
storytelling style, telling his version of the Aesop's fable about the
mouse and the lion. Then Andy was in kind of a goofy skit where he played a
cop who took his job a little too seriously.
A nice surprise to see him.

Me neither. I’m “Curious, curious” too ….I bet MeTV cut it to fit air time.
When Ted Turner was airing TAGS on WTBS back in the 80s/90s, they added in the
epilogs and had to cut parts of the show to fit them in. So it makes a body
wonder just what else they cut. I do know they cut out some of the Giraffes are

Andy discovered in New Rochelle, NY

2022-05-05 Thread Harriet Browder
If anyone has the opportunity to catch an old Dick Van Dyke show – find episode
1, Season 4, titled “My Mother Can Beat Up My Father”. At a gathering right
after Laura fends off a flirtatious drunk, a camera shot directly over Rob’s
shoulders spots a print of Andy Griffith on the wall. So even in New Rochelle,
NY, you can find a reference to Mayberry.

Bird loves Andy Griffith

2022-04-25 Thread bjh4757
I read a news article about a Cockatiel who had been missing for three
years. He had flown out an open door of his owner's house. He was
found on a church doorstep. An animal rescue was called to help catch
him and they were able to track down where he previously lived. The
owner said, "Play the Andy Griffith theme song. If he starts singing
and dancing around, that is our bird. He loves that song." So, that is
how they identified the bird. He loved the whistling!

"Andy Forecloses" - and another question

2021-02-17 Thread Joe
Well, I been studyin' about that question from Ron, and the way it seems to
me, is that Old Ben gave Lester a job at his store so he could pay Ben what
he owed. So the money they collected to help Lester pay the mortgage wasn't
needed anymore, and Andy decided to donate it to the school library,
knowin' the generous folks of Mayberry wouldn't mind.

Now I've got a question - we all know that TAGS was shot on the old 40
Acres backlot, but I've wondered about the outdoor scenes in 2 of the color
episodes. In "Andy's Trip to Raleigh", the backyard with the swimming pool
doesn't look like it belongs on the 40 Acres set. Then in the next
episode, "Opie Steps up In Class", when Aunt Bee pulls up in front of the
house to drop Opie off for lunch (supper?) at the Hollanders, the house
looks like it's out in the country, not on the set.

Since both houses looked pretty upscale, I've always wondered where these
outdoor scenes were shot. Were they rented somewhere nearby 40 Acres? Did
they belong to one of the producers, directors, writers, etc.? Also, is it
possible that the outdoor shots in both episodes were shot at the same
house, since the driveway scene with Opie showed only the front of the
house, and the scenes with the woman lawyer by the pool only showed the
backyard? Also, the fact that these episodes were shown back-to-back.

 Just wonderin'.

Possible Andy Griffith reference

2020-06-16 Thread m white
TAGS fans,
Okay, this isn't exactly TAGS-related, but I wonder if it is Andy Griffith
related. I've been reading through "The Complete Pogo" books from Fantagraphic
Books and from Oct 11 to Nov 1, 1959 the Sunday strips involved a typically
madcap story of the characters playing football. Unfortunately, they pop their
football early on and play the rest of the game with a pumpkin. Made me wonder
if it were in any way inspired by Andy's classic "What it was Was Football"
routine. Walt Kelly, artist responsible for Pogo, was known to be a big fan of
popular comedic albums, so I wouldn't be surprised if Andy's routine (which had
come out just the year before) led to Walt's strips.

Andy/TAGS Sightings

2018-12-17 Thread Jeff Koontz
I've collected a few Andy Griffith/TAGS sightings outside of TAGS and thought I
would pass them along...
 - Andy and The County Boys are featured in a display on Bluegrass in Pop
Culture at the new International Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum in Owensboro
KY along with Martha White Flour, Beverly Hillbillies, Flatt & Scruggs in The
Story of Bonny and Clyde.
 - IBMA Hall of Fame includes The Dillards, Clarence White and Roland White and
their plaques reference them being on TAGS. A photo of The Dillards (probably
taken early 90's) is featured prominently as you walk upstairs to the Hall of
Fame room.
 - IBMA has been collecting oral/video histories from various bluegrass
artists. The interview with The Dillards was done with all four original
members in 2006. It is 2+ hrs long and I listened to about half at the museum.
Try as I might to find its location online, access may only be thru the Museum
or Univ of Kentucky. I'll share a link if I can find it.
 - Ray Stevens recently opened up "Caba-Ray" in Nashville and there is a slide
show of photos that cycle through at the Piano Bar and they are wallpaper in
the performance room. Andy Griffith is featured in one of the photos with The
Jordanaires, who sang regularly with Elvis. I would guess this photo was from
the late 70's based on hairstyle and apparel of one of the singers. Andy is
post-Mayberry/pre-Matlock.
 - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a show on Amazon Prime. The second season takes
place in the late 50's and there is a scene with someone watching TV and it is
Andy Griffith as a guest on a television show. It is just playing in the
background on Mrs. Maizel and I did not recognize the host, but based on IMDB,
I bet it his 1957 appearance on The Steve Allen Show. I bet someone who has
seen Mrs. Maisel (2nd or 3rd eps in Season 2) can confirm.

Andy Griffith Interview

2017-09-28 Thread Jeff Koontz
The Andy Griffith Museum recently obtained a 1964 record that included a Jack
Wagner (Disney voice and Los Angeles radio personality) interview with Andy
Griffith that would have been played on the radio. The museum plans to
eventually add this to the digital audio information available to visitors. The
record includes interviews with a number of different stars of the era with
accompanying song or comedy sketch. Andy Griffith's "Cleopatra" is included
with his interview. The AGM Director of Collections sent the following notes on
the interview:
Jack Wagner ask him about his time at Goldsboro High School teaching, and if he
wrote his comedy routines. Andy explained that some he wrote and others he had
help from friends.
In regards to Cleopatra, Andy received help from Aaron Ruben. Andy asked if
there were any radio stations listening at that moment and Wagner responded,
yes! WGBR in Goldsboro as well as WPAQ in Mount Airy. Andy noted that WPAQ was
in Mount Airy where he grew up and were his family resided and that WPAQ was
about 5 miles from the Virginia line.
Wagner asked him about his hobbies. Andy responded: his wife, his children, his
dog, his shotguns, and his shooting.

Andy at the Bus Station

2017-09-28 Thread Hughes, Clyde L. (HSC)
Jacob,

Thanks for the great perspective from the 60s-70s. It reminds me of the photos
when Andy would re-visit Mt Airy, and how the town was then.
That simple 8x10 at the bus station was so succinct that it says it all. A
simple town with little pretense and a 'town notable' at the bus station.
Just as Andy didn't want the movie made about Mayberry, it seems that that 8x10
was as extravagant as the original town wanted to be, at the time.

Thanks,
Clyde "Barn"

Nice report Allan. I listened to the podcast too. Sounds like a fun time.

I lived in Mount Airy from 1964 to 1972 and at that time, there was no
'Mayberry' themed influence in the town at all. The Snappy Lunch was there, of
course, but it was not well-known that it had been mentioned in the show.
Everyone knew that Andy had been born in Mount Airy, but he seemed to make a
conscious effort to distance the show from the town and he seldom, if ever,
visited. There was a black and white
8X10 photo of Andy on the bulletin board of the local bus station; that was the
only Andy Griffith-related item in town at that time.

Andy prior to being sheriff and Opie's age

2017-02-21 Thread Harriet Browder
> Opie was born in 1954 because he is in the 1st grade in 1960.

> So Andy would have to have been married in 1953 or sooner.

That can't be since Andy Griffith supposedly announced to the world that the
show was designed to take place during or just after the depression. As the
episodes progress, it appears that life take place much later than the
depression. Just because the show started in 1960 doesn't mean that life in
Mayberry is projected to take place in 1960. Plus there's a a number of
episodes between the first episode and the one that we learn Opie can't write
yet (when he was blamed for writing the poem about Barney on the wall of the
bank).

Most 1st graders can at least write their name and age so they know a few
letters and a few numbers. There is no mention of Opie going to kindergarten
and during the time the show was supposed to take place, kindergarten was not
required attendance, hence people opening kindergartens that knew nothing about
teaching kids. (I have first hand knowledge of kindergarten owners and
operators without a college degree). And what about the second class reunion,
which put the grads in a different graduating year? Also, what about way back
when, when most elementary schools, especially small town ones, grouped several
grades together, i.e. The Waltons show kids all were in the same class at the
same time and taught by the same teacher.

The inaccuracies on the show mock consistency. There's virtually no way to
determine what year things took place, other then when Andy and Barney are
deducing facts and state actual dates.

Andy and Barney Early Jobs

2017-02-18 Thread Ken Anderson
According to TAGS episodes, we know that Andy and Barney grew up together
in Mayberry and then graduated from Mayberry Union High. We also know that
they both served in the army. However, then we know basically nothing
about what either of them did until they were in the sheriff department in
1960. Of course Andy had gotten married about five years prior to that and
had been sheriff for a short time, but there is about a ten year or so time
span that is unaccounted for.

So my question to you is this. What kind of jobs do you think Barney and
Andy had between the times that they were in the army and when they joined
the sheriff's department?

I don't recall this ever being discussed before. I imagine they both
returned to Mayberry when discharged from the army, so what did they then
do?

I put the bucket on my head and found this. Maybe the episode should have been
titled "Andy Alden".

John Alden and Priscilla Mullins
One of the earliest romances in the American colonies
by David Johnson

Immortalized by Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow's<http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/people/A0830229.html> 1858 poem, The
Courtship of Miles Standish, John
Alden's<http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/people/A0803155.html> marriage to
Priscilla Mullins was one the earliest romances in the American colonies. While
the story is not verifiable, many experts do believe it in fact happened.
Alden and Mullins arrived on the
Mayflower<http://www.infoplease.com/spot/mayflower1.html> in 1630. Shortly
thereafter, Standish, "a blunt old captain, a man not of words but of actions,"
according to Longfellow, took a liking to Mullins, "the loveliest maiden of
Plymouth<http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/history/A0839407.html>."
However, although Standish was fearless in battle, he was too shy to confront
Mullins directly, so he sent his young friend, Alden. The soft-spoken Alden was
"Fair-haired, azure-eyed, with delicate Saxon complexion/Having the dew of his
youth, and the beauty thereof. . ."
After Alden had pleaded Standish's case, Mullins said, "Why don't you speak for
yourself, John?" It was clear that Alden and Mullins were in love, but the
couple was afraid of offending Standish. When they received word that the
captain had been killed fighting Indians, Alden and Mullins agreed to marry. At
the end of the wedding, Standish, who had not been killed after all, appeared,
and seeing what had transpired, gave the newlyweds his blessing and asked their
forgiveness for his previous behavior.
Alden and Mullins had 11 children and were among the founders of the town of
Duxbury, Massachusetts.

Andy and Don book

2016-09-18 Thread Janet Anderson
Well, I finally decided to get the "Andy and Don" book. I debated for a long
time due to things I'd heard about it, but after reading many fans' positive
comments, I bought it and finished reading it tonight. One thing I have to say
is that it is an engrossing read. Once I started, it was hard to put it down,
and I spent most of today reading it. The author obviously did a thorough job
in researching the book, as there were things in it that I had never known
before, some that were fascinating to learn, others that were disturbing to
discover. As an old movie and classic TV buff, I have a number of biographies
and autobiographies of big stars, so I'm accustomed to finding out that actors
and actresses can be very different from their on-screen personas. Still,
there was some information in the "Andy and Don" book that I could have done
without. I guess we fans, though we ought to know better, link the men so
closely with the roles they played on TAGS that finding out they were
very different people in real life can be a bit disillusioning. Still, I'm a
big girl. I can handle it. It was interesting to find out that the inception
of Mayberry Days was somewhat of a fluke, and it's amazing to think how that
fluke has impacted Surry County, and Mt. Airy specifically, over the years.
The author described attending the Mayberry Days after Andy's death and
commented on some of the participants. I was quite disappointed by his brief
description of David Browning (though unnamed) as "a Don Knotts surrogate, with
a few extra pounds on his frame and no magic in his eyes." I found that unfair
and rather insulting. First of all, David doesn't impersonate Don Knotts; he
does his own version of Barney. Secondly, he's been doing the Mayberry Deputy
for many years now and was slimmer when he first started (and he's no more than
average weight now). Thirdly, if the author thought David had "no magic in his
eyes," he must not have looked in them. Sorry to go on ab
out that, but in Barney's lingo, that just frosted me! David is so talented
with a great personality. He has added immeasurably to various Mayberry
functions and celebrations through the years. (Okay, enough of the rabbit
trail.) With nearly all autobiographies I read, my favorite part is the
beginning and my least favorite is the end, with the decline of a career and
eventually the death of the subject. That was still somewhat true with this
book, but the one thing that was very uplifting about the end of the "Andy and
Don" book is Andy's return to his boyhood Christian faith. After years of
living a Hollywood lifestyle, his illnesses later in life seemed to bring him
back to the realization that the most important thing is life is the state of
the soul and preparation for eternity. He wanted desperately to believe that
Don would be waiting for him in heaven and regretted that he wasn't able to
explicitly discuss his salvation or lack thereof before Don's death. The
author'
s account verified that Andy's faith in the Lord was real, and I found this
touching and comforting. I realize my report on the book is very late, as most
of you have either read it or decided not to. I just wanted to share my
thoughts.

The Book Andy & Don Written by Daniel de Vise'

2016-08-16 Thread John Graham
I just finished reading the book Andy & Don, which was published in
2015. I think that the highlight of the book was what a caring and sincere
friendship that Andy Griffith and Don Knots shared. It was the kind of
relationship that I think everyone would like to share with a special
friend at least once in their life. It does cast Andy Griffith in a little
different light than most TAGS fans are accustomed to and it shows an
intensity, a drive for perfection, and a personality, which at times, in
real life, was far different that we saw in Andy Taylor. On the other side
of the coin, Don Knotts, in real life, seemed to come across very much like

Andy and Elvis

2016-07-24 Thread Ben Sandifer
July 25, 1955, stand-up comic Andy Griffith started a Florida tour at the
New City Auditorium in Fort Myers. This tour was 9 shows in 5 different
Florida cities.

The opening act for this tour was Elvis Presley. Shortly after this, Elvis
became so popular that he would never be anyone's "opening act" again.

Not related to this tour, in July 1994, the band Confederate Railroad
released their song "Elvis and Andy."

New Andy Griffith Show

2016-06-16 Thread Janet Anderson
Thanks for the link to the opening of "The New Andy Griffith Show." I've seen
it before but liked seeing it again. It's funny, but I don't remember ever
seeing this show when it aired, which would have been when I was growing up.
We always watched comedies and variety shows, so there must have been something
popular that aired opposite it on another network. Does anyone remember what
that was?

Anyway, I have a couple of observations about the opening. Andy's two children
were much younger than Opie was when TAGS ended. Apparently, they wanted to
make Andy seem younger than he was. Another thing that struck me about the
opening of TNAGS is that it seemed rather stilted, whereas the opening of TAGS
always seemed (and seems) so natural and real. The opening of TNAGS makes me
think, "There are some actors playing their parts," but the opening of TAGS
makes me think, "There's a dad going fishing with his son." When you've had a
near-perfect show like TAGS, it's awfully hard to follow it up with anything
else.

I believe that the episode that had Andy explaining vanity to Opie
was the one where Andy was getting ready for the Chamber of Commerce Dance.
Andy had just had Floyd give him a haircut and opie wanted to know why he
asked Floyd to give him a haircut but to not make it look like he had just
had a haircut. He made a remark about that being vanity and Opie wanted to
know if that had something to do with Aunt Bee's dressing table. I could be
wrong, but I think that was the episode.

I just finished reading a book that reminded me of "Andy and Don" (which I

"Leonard" by William Shatner. In the book Mr. Shatner talks about his

Although I own the first 5 seasons on DVD, I watch nightly on MeTV (although
they seem to be stuck in repeating seasons 2 & 3 all the time) and I watch
any TAGS show, any season on Netflix.

One thing that really makes it difficult to watch the color seasons is
Andy's attitude about darn near everything. So irritable all the time. I
know this has been discussed before - even though I haven't been here - I
know ya'll are talking.

My question is why? Was it all about Barney not being there so Andy could
play straight man? Did Andy play Andy irritable because he had no one to
bounce off of (although they tried others without success - in my humble
opinion). Or was Andy just getting tired of the whole show? Maybe it's
because he waited way too long to get married?

Well, little Andy's callin' for lunch and then I have to get back out to the
field. Thelma Lou.this has been my contribution, if Quiet Sam can do it so
can others.

Andy and Don

2016-01-19 Thread Michael Eury
I read the *Andy and Don* biography right when it came out and had a hard
time putting it down.

Yes, some of the revelations about their personal lives are surprising, and
a few are shocking. But the author, Daniel de Vise (Don Knotts'
brother-in-law, BTW), presents a fair and balanced, as well as utterly
fascinating, portrait of Andy Griffith and Don Knotts unlike anything I've
ever read about them before (and like many of you, I've read a lot).

Some *TAGS* fans' negative reactions to the book focus on these shocks --
on the revelations of both men's failings -- but de Vise doesn't
sensationalize these shortcomings. He also portrays the positive qualities
and immense talents of both Griffith and Knotts, with a continuing
spotlight on the deep bond and friendship that cemented their relationship
for so many decades.

The book *Andy and Don* didn't change my lifelong affection for Sheriff
Andy Taylor or Deputy Barney Fife one iota -- in fact, it deepened it,
because it made me realize that behind our beloved icons were two men who
could rise above their human flaws to create "real" characters and an
endearing show that outlived them and will outlive us all.

Andy & Don - again :-)

2016-01-17 Thread bcbow
One of the great things about the internet is that you can find out, in pretty
great detail, about the contents of a book, the style of writing, and the
author well in advance of the official release/publication of the book. If you
are a bit patient, you can even wait and read reviews written by "every day"
readers of a book on Amazon. It just might help you decide whether you'd be
interested in purchasing a book - or not.

A very nice aspect of thjs daily WBMUTBB Digest is that it allows its readers
to voice a wide range of opinion, so I'll humbly add mine this time.

Daniel de Visé, the author of Andy & Don, does not strike me as a "make a quick
buck from muck-raking" kind of writer. He did not work for the National
Enquirer or other rags of its ilk when he worked as a journalist, but rather
was highly regarded for his investigative reporting. Twice his reporting led to
the release of wrongly convicted men from life terms in Florida prisons, which
I think is a good indicator of the depth of his research skills. I had read his
first book, I Forgot to Remember, co-authored by Sue Meck, and I liked it...
Don Knotts' third wife is the sister of De Visé's wife - the author is family,
in other words. It looked like a book I'd be interested in reading.

I live in Mount Airy, where our family has very long and deep roots. Some time
ago (2010, I believe), I emailed a link to an interesting article to one of our
older relatives who had gone to school with Andy Griffith. She wrote back:

"Thanks Bisse,
It was a great read and took me back to Rockford Street Elementary School where
Andy, a year older than me, would play on the girl's side of the playground
because there was a girl he was sweet on. It also took me back to Mt. Airy
High School where he copied my Algebra papers until I gave him the wrong
answers and our teacher, Annie Fawcett Jackson, caught on to OUR cheating. He
sat behind me and could look over my shoulder if I moved a little. I loved
his show, his mother Geneva & dad Carl, but I never liked Andy! I always
thought there was something "FAKE" about him."

Emmett Forrest, Mr. Griffith's best friend from school, never had anything but
wonderful, positive things to say about him, while also acknowledging that the
students who went to Rockford Elementary did not always have it easy when they
got to the city-wide High School since they "came from the wrong side of town,
the poor side."

So, there are two different views of Mr. Griffith from his childhood and youth,
both authentic and neither "wrong." I dare say the same could be said about
most of us...and I was certainly willing to see what De Visé had found in his
research.

Briefly: I liked the book. I found it to be well written, well researched and
annotated, nuanced, sensitive and informative. I agree with the 80+ % of reader
reviews that gave the book 5 stars on Amazon.

In my opinion, the author did not resort to trashing "the names of our beloved
sheriff and deputy for his own gain," seeing as how he did not criticize the
two fictional characters, but wrote about what he had learned about the two
actors who created and portrayed them. He added some insights from people who
knew the two men, insights that rounded out much of what was already publicly
known and that, rather than sensationalize, did so with warmth and
understanding.

It is not a matter of putting Andy and Don on pedestals as I have never
put any celebrity on one. I knew before I read the book that they had
their "darker sides". I'm just saying that it is not appropriate to
write such things when the main subjects can't defend themselves. In my
opinion this author was just out to make a buck at the expense of Andy,
Don and all TAGS fans!

Re: "Andy & Don"

Jim,
To begin with, I haven't had the chance to read the book yet but am very
anxious to and will making the time. With that said, while I may be in the
minority, I'd prefer to know about my favorite actors, warts and all. We've
got to be very careful and not make them out to be what they aren't and putting
them on a pedestal - I seriously doubt either Andy or Don would want that.
They were people and they'd be the first to admit they had their flaws - just
like the rest of us. We saw the imperfections in the characters they portrayed
and that make them feel more like us and that's why we love them and identify
with them so much. Why can we not so the same for the actors that portray
them? I'm not suggesting to indulge in any voyeuristic tendencies, but knowing
that Andy Griffith and Don Knotts had their weakness and flaws just like the
rest of us brings them. And we know Aunt Bee and Clara wasn't above a LITTLE
gossip now and then - and even Andy indulged, too.

"Andy & Don"

2016-01-13 Thread Jim and Nancy
I just finished reading "Andy & Don". I found the book to be
interesting, but at the same time somewhat disturbing. The author wrote
of Andy and Don's struggles and successes. He also wrote about affairs,
bouts with drinking, depression and fits of anger. In reading this
book, I'm sure neither Andy or Don would have wanted some of that
information known to the general public. I have a problem with authors
such as this one who write of such things when the subjects are no
longer around to defend themselves. It seemed evident that the author
was not gearing his book to TAGS fans as evidenced by the subject matter
and some of the terminology he used. In my opinion, this author was
opportunistic and did not have the best interests of Andy, Don, their
families and their fans at heart.

I would be interested in hearing others' opinions about this book.

I appreciate all those who have written in with their thoughts about the "Andy
and Don" book. On the one hand, I'd really like to read it, especially for the
parts concerning the show and the friendship between Don and Andy, but I really
don't want to read about the marital infidelities and such. So I think I will
pass on the book. From comments he made later in life, I believe Andy had a
change of heart regarding his earlier behavior and choices. At least, I hope
that is the case. It's just a shame how their problems remaining faithful to
their wives not only led to divorce but to the break-ups of families with
children. Anyway, I'd prefer not to dwell on that. But thanks for sharing the
reviews because it helps the rest of us to decide whether or not to read it.
