Nothing in my life is linear. I'm more like String Theory. -Original Message- From: wireless-boun...@wispa.org [mailto:wireless-boun...@wispa.org] On Behalf Of Lawrence E. Bakst Sent: Tuesday, February 02, 2010 3:26 PM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] power You guys should know that the 802.11 radios I have worked with can have built in attenuators, sometimes more than one, that can get switched on and off based on RX power level sensed in hardware. How many and at what levels the attenuators kick in varies from card to card and vendor to vendor. ODMs have the ability to change this part of the design. If implemented properly, which may not always be the case, the built in attenuators should prevent most RX overload. To make it even more complicated there can also be LNAs that can switched on or off. I mention all this because if your mental model of how the card works assumes that everything is linear, it could be wrong. Re: [WISPA] power
-55 is WAY too high most of the time. If you have perfect LOS (this means fresnel zone and all) it's ok. But with the receive sensitivity of the new gear you'll pick up too many reflections to have a good performing link. The worst part about this is that it shows up more and more when you start putting more and more customers on the link. One only taking care of one or 5 customers will hide a lot of problems. marlon - Original Message - From: "Nick Olsen" To: "WISPA General List" Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 6:02 PM Subject: Re: [WISPA] power > Like we said, Drop both sides till the signal gets in the -55 to -65 > range. > Doesn't matter what the power is, as long as the signal is around there. > As > its where your going to get your best throughput, Barring any other > interference. > > Nick Olsen > Network Engineer / Customer Support > (321) 205-1100 x106 > > > > From: "RickG" > Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 8:56 PM > To: "WISPA General List" > Subject: Re: [WISPA] power > > Ya, thats what I do. Re: [WISPA] power
That's a VERY high indicator of multipath. This is only a guess, but I'd say that you probably run many of these links at -50 or more signal levels. -60 for sure. If you DROP your signals to -70 to -75 you'll often find them working even better. marlon - Original Message - From: "RickG" To: "WISPA General List" Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 5:08 PM Subject: [WISPA] power > OK, I need a little input. Re: [WISPA] Follow up article
Oddly, I was a McCain fan a few years ago, even when I didn't agree with him on a fair number of issues-but he seemed to have some backbone. However, I was pretty disgusted by his pandering in the last election and voted for Obama. But then, I felt (and still feel) that Obama is a lot more moderate/conservative than most of his party realizes. Note that this by no means makes him a conservative-just more conservative than the majority of his backers seem to understand. When I was on the school board out this way, I used to publicly say I'd rather have twice the voter turn out and lose than half the turn out and win, whether for my own re-election or on the yearly public vote on the budget. You can imagine the gasps of indignation from certain elements of the electorate by that statement. The lack of participation, whatever the outcome, undermines our institutions. Both candidates were arguably the worst in American history. It says a lot about you to admit you voted for Obama. I know people that for a fact voted for Obama, but now deny it. Re: [WISPA] power
You guys should know that the 802.11 radios I have worked with can have built in attenuators, sometimes more than one, that can get switched on and off based on RX power level sensed in hardware. The problem with politicians is simple. They have stopped thinking along the lines of what is right and wrong morally Instead - they think along the lines of legality: is this legal or illegal. If there is no law to stop something - then its considered legal - even if morally wrong! In seminary I had to study words a whole bunch - amazing what you learn when you break apart a word down to its roots... The only way in this country for the forseeable future is for something like the Tea Party to put enough candidates into both partys to take over and pass some serious reforms. Term Limits, Tort reform, Constitutional balanced budget amendment (with a provision to kick them all out of office if they don't). Although I would pay more in tax, I would like to see all government fees and taxes constitutionally abolished and replaced with a flat sales tax at the point of sales only. No damn VAT tax where they hide the true tax. My 0.02 anyway. On Tue, Feb 2, 2010 at 12:27 AM, RickG wrote: > One day soon - either Ron Paul or someone like him. Indeed. I am a conservative, but anyone that stays too far from their party's intent is worse for their party than the other is to that intent. I think everyone should have a sign over their heads that says if they voted or not, relative to what they're talking about. If they didn’t vote (and had an opportunity), then they should be ignored. This goes for anything political, your local chamber of commerce, WISPA, etc. I did vote in the last WISPA election, so I have the right to bitch if I don't like the way something is being handled. - Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com -- From: "Brad Belton" Sent: Tuesday, February 02, 2010 7:29 AM To: "'WISPA General List'" Subject: Re: [WISPA] Follow up article > There's nothing wrong with the two party system. That's something that has always irked me. Congress got the ball rolling when the term limits were created for the office of the President, yet we cannot get that same body to set limits for themselvesmakes you wonder. The other part of this that bothers me, is how clueless the American people are when it comes to voting for congressional and state representatives in the district they live in. If people want change they have NO CHOICE but to pull the lever against the incumbent in their own districts. I don't care how good a job they might be doing, as a citizen you may hate and disapprove of every other representative, but you have NO RIGHT to vote those others out of office by virtue of WHERE you are registered to vote. The politicians know this very well. This is why you see all kinds of obscure grants and government projects get approved with oversized checks and press conferences just before an election. These are what congress calls member line item projects, others call them pork barrel projects. The reality is they are buying votes for those who pull the lever and have short term memory. It breeds politicians who think they are invincible and not accountable to the people, but rather to the political system in the houses where they hold seats. If the public were to en masse vote every incumbent out of office, it MIGHT give a wake up call to these folks that they should answer to their constituents rather than the dysfunctional system they do today. Re: [WISPA] Follow up article
This isn't really that big of a deal. The DNS root servers just refer to the top level domain servers. All transferring control to the ITU would enable is they could add new TLDs through whichever process they want. Note that policy control of the root servers does not translate into operational control of the root servers. The root server operators (http://www.root-servers.org/) diverse enough that I doubt the UN or whoever could get away with removing a TLD pointer. Example: Cogent hosts a root server farm. Lets say the ITU wants to remove the pointer to .com. Do you really think Cogent would allow that change to go through (or not reverse the change) since most of their customers would get pissed off that their favorite web sites don't come up? Control over pointers to .com/.tw/etc does not convey censorship ability on domains below the TLD. If you want something to be alarmed about with regards to ITU/UN control over the internet take a look at attempts to get their claws into IPv6 address assignments: http://www.circleid.com/posts/the_geography_of_internet_addressing/ P.S. Blakeman Without the ingenuity of America's brightest minds and the investment of U.S. taxpayer dollars, there would be no Internet, as we now know it today. Now, the Obama administration has moved quietly to cede control of the Web from the United States to foreign powers. Some background: The Internet came into being because of the genius work of Americans Dr.Robert E. Kahn and Dr. Vinton G. Cerf. These men, while working for the Department of Defense in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in the early 1970s, conceived, designed, and implemented the idea of "open-architecture networking." This breakthrough in connectivity and networking was the birth of the Internet. These two gentlemen had the vision and the brainpower to create a worldwide computer Internet communications network that forever changed the world and how we communicate in it. They discovered that providing a person with a unique identifier (TCP/IP)that was able to be recognized and interact through a network of servers would allow users to communicate with others. The servers woulduse a series of giant receivers to recognize the identifier and connect networks to networks, passing on information from computer to computer in a seamless real-time exchange of information. This new process of communication became know as the "information super highway," aka, the Internet. Now for the bad news: In an effort to show the world how inclusive, sharing, cooperative, and international America can be, the Obama administration set off on a plan to surrender control and key management of the Internet by the U.S. Department of Commerce and its agents. The key to the control America has over the Internet is through the management of the Domain Name System (DNS) and the giant servers that service the Internet. Domain names are managed through an entity named IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. The IANA, which operates on behalf of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is responsible for the global coordination of the DNS, IP addressing, and other Internet protocol resources. In short, without an IP Address or other essential Internet protocols, a person or entity would not have access to the Internet. For years, the international community has been pressuring the United States to surrender its control and management of the Internet. They want an international body such as the United Nations or even the International Telecommunications Union, (an entity that coordinates international telephone communications), to manage all aspects of the Internet in behalf of all nations. The argument advanced for those seeking international control of the Internet is that the Internet has become such a powerful, pervasive, and a dependent form of international communications, that it would be dangerous and inequitable for any one nation to control and manage it. Just this past spring, within months of Obama's taking office, his administration, through the Department of Commerce, agreed to relinquish some control over IANA and their governance. The Obama administration has agreed to give greater representation to foreign companies and countries on IANA. This amounts to one small step for internationalism and one giant leap for surrendering America's control over an invention we have every right and responsibility to control and manage. It is in America's economic and national security interests not to relinquish any control. We are responsible for the control, operation, and functionality of one of the modern world's greatest inventions and most powerful communications network. What better country to protect the Internet than the United States? We invented it, and we paid for the research and implementation that made it possible. We are the freest, most tolerant nation on earth, we believe in the fundamental right of free speech, and we practice a free market of commerce and ideas. America has always been against censorship and has shared its invention with the world without fee or unreasonable or arbitrary restriction. The user fee to operate on the Internet is not one paid to the U.S. government; a consumer pays it to private Internet companies, who provide access to the Internet through servers for their subscribers. Look no further than China's recent move against Google to censor the Internet, and you can envision what can happen when other nations less free than the United States seek to control the Internet beyond even thei
