Re: Witango-Talk: Terascript/FileMaker Pro

2011-08-23 Thread Dan Stein
Well that may be true. I don't expect FMI really expects client to be used this
way. It's not something I have ever done except back in 5 days.

You could try using the XODBC install from server and see if that fixes it for
client.

Witango-Talk: Redirects

2011-08-17 Thread Dan Stein
I have a client that has two domains. One is for Spanish version and one for
english. Right now switching languages just takes you to the home page of
whichever site. I did it that way because it was safer and easier. But I do
have a URL variable in the string so I know the exact location they were when
the switched.

Now that everything else is running fine I want to do the redirects. But I am
pretty sure there are some issues here because we are going to another domain.
I need to do the redirect in such a way that the browser security, especially
IE 7-9 is not going to trip me up.

Suggestions? Solutions?

Does anyone have a machine actually running IE 7 that can test this page for me

And tell me what stylesheet it is loading. It should be
program_style_ie7.css
not

I have no way of checking for sure.

The biggest issue would be if you are using any rosetta stuff at all anywhere.
If so rosetta needs to be installed as an additional installtion. I think you

Witango-Talk: Spanish lang display issue

2011-05-17 Thread Dan Stein
I have a MS SQL solution MSQL Collation is SQL_Latin_General_CP1_CI_AS

In most tables there is a field that is in Spanish since this is a dual
language site.

The Spanish translation are being imported from Excel

For Ex.

Si se denegó, se envió una carta al médico

This works fine if the text is in just a plain HTML page but once it goes
through the Witango server it munches it up giving me

Se dio aviso por escrito al paciente y al mdico

So it seems its a witango issue not resolved by encoding=html

Re: Witango-Talk: Date issue (OSX/JDBC/FMP)

2011-05-03 Thread Dan Stein
There was a bug in the ODC driver that may also be in the JDBC that caused an
error like this. What does the debug code say the insert statement looks like?
Are you on FileMaker 11? If so you need the latest Drivers and Server update
anyway. The bug was with how the driver dealt with whitespace.

Try it with the new drivers but also send us the actual debug so we can see
what it is trying to insert.

Re: Witango-Talk: JDBC and case sensitive searching

2011-03-31 Thread Dan Stein
Not sure this is a JDBC issue. This could be FileMaker. As far as I know JDBC
is not by default case sensitive. But in FileMaker 10 and 11 if the field is
set to type unicode instead of english the searchers will be case sensitive. So
check that 1st. Its on the storage tab in the field definition. a quick google
search leads me to believe that the JDBC is by default case insensitive is ODBC.

Re: Witango-Talk: Witango to FMP: Still fighting with it.

2011-02-15 Thread Dan Stein
Wayne.
I would not ever suggest using anything but FMS to do this. Using FileMaker in
peer to peer is always risky for more reason then I can count.

Robert hosts FileMaker at Tronics and I manage the FileMaker part of that
server. The pricing is very competitive and you get all the advantages of FMP
server on none of the really disastrous possibilities when you use FileMaker in
peer to peer. As long as they have a decent pipe then its will really fly.

Its saves a lot of money over the cost of the mini and extra license and gives
them access even if they are not in the office as long as they have FileMaker
on their machine.

I have been doing this for more years then I like to count and unless I have a
single user client I always have them buy server or if not I move them to
hosting.

Witango-Talk: [Off] SQL Query

2011-01-07 Thread Dan Stein
I have a MS SQL table that has about 2M records in it. I had to add a field
that is actually a combination of the month and year to it for some reports I
am running. Foolishly I named columns month, year, day in this table so I
think it is a problem with trying to write a query that takes the month value
and combines it with the year value to give me month year.

I tried writing something like

Update tableA

Set monthYear= [TableA].[month] + [TableA].[year]
where mothYear is null

All it does it set it to the year value.

Re: Witango-Talk: Formatting array issues

That seems to make it a table and show all the catching it Encoding=None should
be the correct choice . It is the default. But even if I add it I still get the
superscript. I would rather get rid of the whole string if I could since it
seems not to process. Leave it to USPS to screw the pouch with no warning.

I do suggest when you move to 11 you also move to the multiple table system so
you don't need more then one data file and one UI file.

I have tools and have done that many times if you need help.

With that kind of system you also then build a fMP ODBC table that just
references the tables in the data file that you need. end up giving you are
SQWL like structure to work with and faster response.

Contact me off list if you need more explanation.

Robert if you want me to try and write up something on FMP 9,10,11 and Witango
let me know.

Running it it server 2003 compatibility mode works. Turns out of server 2008
all the needed modules are already there unlike Windows 7 and the handler

Witango-Talk: Redirect question

2010-02-09 Thread Dan Stein
Folks,

I am building a new taf. When they click on a map it looks up the URL in the
database based on the state code and we want them to then go to a new page
based on the stored link.

If we have no stored link I'll call the same page again and I guess show a pop
up saying nothing there at this time.

I can use the JS window.location or HTTP redirect so 1st question is which one
is safest and most likely to work with all browsers.

and I can't seem to find a property that will let me force a new window or tab
to open.

OK not user how if if I can do this one.
My client wants to give code for a form out to his clients that will submit a
zip code and distance to our site run through a taf file and return a list.

It works on this page on our site
http://www.needymeds.org/drugcard/index.shtml
He would prefer they don't end up on our site after they submit the form

I thought this might be done with framesets but I have not worked with them

Not sure how they submit to our site and the results page ends up being frmaed

rick is correct I should have added [Off] as we have agreed to in the past.
On the other hand a note to me reminding me would have ben the proper response.

Time to move on.

We are coming up on the 2 yr. anniversary of the announcement of witango 6. So
I am hoping we will get some news this month or 1st of the year from Phil.

Meanwhile we all keep working and waiting.

I for one am glad at least some folks are still around.

Witango-Talk: Dynamic year drop down

2009-12-04 Thread Dan Stein
So I need to generate for credit cards a dynamic year drop down using
javascript or php.

I want the available years to be just the current year and x years out.

Does anyone have code they would be willing to share?

This is easy in witango. But not an option for this project.

Also you can try open a connection to the DB sometime in the start of
the users interaction with you site. could be something in the
background and a very simple small query but that will assure a
connection is setup and available for reuse. I don't think you are
going to beat the ,et direct connection but you should be able to get
closer.

If you don't have caching turned on, the act of having to load the
taf file will add a delay and increase the time.

Remove unnecessary actions before the one which returns your

slower for the latter actions.

Witango puts the DB connection into a "pool" for re-use. The first
use of a database connection is slower than subsequent uses of the
same datasource. How long Witango keeps datasource connections open
can be controlled. Witango does cache the results of commonly used
queries, every query is done fresh from the DBMS.

Witango has been accused of being slow when using its looping
featues, @FOR and @ROWS, especially on on large result sets
(arrays). Is there any way to re-write the output to avoid using the
@ROWS, ie using the array parameters of @VAR, ie APREFIX, ASUFFIX,
RPREFIX, RSUFFIX, CPREFIX, CSUFFIX

Agree with Robert S 100%. Phil please take what he says to heart and
in the spirit is was intended.

Don't go and leave us hanging no matter what. If needed ask for help
so we can have those updates.

This tells us 6 is still alive but gives us still no idea when we
might expect to see it, what there is left to wrangle with.

I still do Witango work and would love todo even more.

It is running on windows 7 so it still is working for me.

But as Robert S says the communication is what is most important. So
please lets hear back from you or a designated person soon like this
week and then at least monthly afterwards.

Can With Enterprises make that commitment to those of us still using
the product?

Yes, it's THAT important.

I'm not talking about up to the minute tweets, but you made an

If you are moving ahead with version 6, then please, post occasional
updates, even if simple "109 more things to do" type messages. Re-

your site, setup a v6 blog, setup a beta forum, do something to help

To those still using Witango and wanting to,
As I have admitted previously I do not live a public life, I am not a

background getting on with what I need to get done. Witango has not
been shelved. Admittedly it is has not been on a fast track but it is
still alive. Yes, it is still a niche product and will continue to
be. It is still part of our business model and we are still providing
licensing and support for version 5.5 to those that require it and we
will continue to do so while there is a demand for it right down to
the very last user.

Witango 6 will be available to those that still want to use it. With
the latest OS X Java update we now have a fully functioning dev studio
that is able to replace the old carbon Mac studio.

To Robert G,
What you do and whether you listening to your peers is entirely up to

Personally I have never been judged so often and harshly by someone

of me, understanding of the way I lead my life or run my business,
what motivates me personally or professionally or knows what is going
on in my private life. May I offer you some wisdom - a long time ago
I learnt not to make judgements without compassion and to never judge
someone's actions until I knew what there motives or situation was.
This wisdom has served me well time and time again.

You have told us all on several occasions that you are moving on to

please move on with your professional life. I am sure there are many
more positive things you can dedicate your time and energy to there
than beating up on Witango/Me here.

Contrary to the rumours started on the list version 6 is on the way
and is not dead. The hold up is all legal issues and related to
locating and isolating 3rd part code that has been used in the server
under license and replacing it with open API calls so we can go open
source. This is taking a lot longer than we thought.

We understand that some developers have out grown the platform and
have moved on to other platforms, that is their prerogative. We have
plans to keep supporting Witango while there are people out there
wanting to use it. To this end, can I ask that the you take up
Robert's offer and move the porting to PHP discussion to his forum -

 .

And yes we do have a lot of holidays down here minimum of 30 days
leave a year which is 4 weeks statutory leave plus New Years Day,
Australia Day, Anzac Day, Easter Friday and Monday, Queen's Birthday,
Labour Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Christmas and Boxing Day, etc. Keeps
us a happy and family oriented business.

The Witango portion of our business is running above expectations
albeit a little behind schedule. Apart from that we are just moving
ahead at a steady pace.

Phil,

Many people feel stranded, and I have received more than a few

It is my assumption due to unreturned emails, and lack of any
updates that this product (witango application server and studio)
is dead. If the product is dead, these keys are of no use to me,

seems like the best thing to do would be to run it under windows with

Regular html pages are served OK, but I am running into an

page is activated (even just a .tml page from localhost) -- and no

The witango module itself references "ap_get_remote_host" twice,
when I checked.

This "ap_get_remote_host" error, according to what I can find on
the internet, can be due to a "configuration" problem or a
connection problem (esp relating to IPv6 or null addresses). I
turned off IPv6 and even when I specify the IP address of the
localhost server (though that I shouldn't have to do), the same
issue arises and an Apache crash report is generated in the Mac OS X
logs (no crash report from Witango).

I also found that some other applications have had problems with
this "ap_get_remote_host" function in the past, but the resolutions
seemed to involve Apache patches in most cases. Gah!

Attempting to use the (functional) Leopard Apache installation with
Snow Leopard was a failure, as regular web pages wouldn't even come
up.

Witango-Talk: Vista and ODBC witango

2009-07-22 Thread Dan Stein

So I have witango running on Vista 64bit ultimate.

But none of the ODBC data sources are showing up at all.

I imported them all into the registry but witango is not seeing them.

to further complicate matters even though my user account is in the
administrators group when I try to create a new data source in Witango
it tell me I am not logged in as an adminstrator. I guess that is some
sort of security issue but I do not know how to get around it.

no. think about it. You are not even writing data at that point. But
even if you were drives write thousands sometimes millions of files or
records without a problem. The drive just failed.

If you had a proper raid config it would have been only one drive
failing and it could have kept going.

Anyway in a production server situation you do need to plan for
replacing those drives every 3 years or so.

no but not sure how Phil could answer that except with a guess.

How long will it take to find all the 3rd part calls in the server and

How long will it take lawyers to clear up the open source issues?

Those seem like two unknowns.

I will keep all porting to php discussion to this forum. You can

Australia's Summer is starting now, they could be on vacation.

but, the lack of any communication is very confusing.

I mean, all With has to do is say "hey we are still here and still
dealing with licensing" and that would stop the people from starting
these threads.

as Stefan said, Communication is the key.

I'm also confused at why a license setup for freeware would hold up
the selling of regular product, especially when so many are waiting to

Hello all,

Well, I have a problem and maybe some of you could help me. I have
been using nothing but Tango and Witango since I started developing
many years ago. Started on Mac with Butler and eventually moved to
Windows.
Witango is
all I have ever used and now I am in a quandry. I see the writing is
on the wall and though I have resisted for many years, it seems
that I
am going to have to take the plunge and figure out what to do for
what

I have that already exists and for the future. The problem is that I
am so comfortable with what I have that moving is going to take a lot
of effort. I have been going through the different options out there
and I am so confused as to editors, parsers, etc. that I really do
not

know which direction to turn. I have a very small smattering of ASP
which I hacked in order to get a site that was moved to our servers
to

work, but that is the only other language that I even attempted to
try. The real crux of the problem is that everything out there looks
very confusing and so far removed from what I currently have. I am
fairly adept in SQL, Witango, HTML and CSS but I have never taken the
time to learn anything new.

I downloaded some PHP editors, some sample ASP stuff, and to tell you
the truth, I just don't get a lot of it. Is there anything out there
that gives as visual of an interface as Witango? Or maybe is there a
specific place you can go to relearn the logic that it will take to
use any of the tools available? I think PHP is probably the place to
start, but I am totally confused as to how to go about it. I would
prefer to continue using IIS as I am very familiar with it along with
the security. I went to the PHP site and it seems that there are
pages

upon pages of just the install for IIS. Or, how about editors? Are
there any that you would recommend? Keep in mind my Witango
background. I never went to school for any of this stuff and I have
some pretty complicated things running on my sites from forums to
streaming PDFs, data access management systems to e-commerce.

This is going to be tough, but I need to take it one step at a
time...

It has been a mystery for years now why communication or lack of it

In the meantime I am still using and making money from 5.5 and on

I have hopes that someday the IDE will handle PHP.

In the meantime I find this to be a valuable list of mostly

One thing I have learned is that many people respond to pressure and
challenges by using the tools they have. Some people understand that
part of their tool box is other people. Some leaders NEVER learn
that lesson, never see others as part of the solution. All along the
way, the resources of this group were at their disposal. They chose
not to use those resources. This happens all the time. In tons of
businesses, heck in marriages. My wife has poor night vision
driving, and freaks out, not because I am a poor driver, but because
of what she can't see. Her limitation on that point, becomes my
challenge, even my limitation, if you know what I mean.

Ill-formed and complex problems come up all the time in business.
Such are the problems Phil faces. He could have involved others,
collaboratively, to solve those problems, share the load, but has a
personality or mind set, that isn't open to that. That is clear. It
is also clear that isn't going to change soon. He isn't going to
say, "Hey, sorry I didn't reach out, have a few sign non-competes/
disclosure or whatever and get this done for all of us." Not in the
cards. Not in the personality. So just face it and accept it. He is
still an ok guy for sure. Just not a viable business partner that I
can tell.

There are several legal options that open the way for a collective
effort. Heaven knows, there have been many on the list who would
have helped, and have shown by their actions over the years to be
great great resources. No matter what you say, you can't force them
to be collaborative or give up control or give up the credit or
trust others who are better than them in some things. That is a
choice they need to make willingly.

I have a relative like that. Absolutely no communication. Nothing
you can do, until he needs something, and then afterwards he is back
into his cave. I left a company and lost 6 figures to that kind of
behavior. Nothing could be done. Nothing.

Sylvia Ashton Warner, an educator in New Zealand said, "Behavior has
it's reasons." It always does. Being clueless about them, and having
an unwilling partner, destroys trust. And trust is at the center of
all successful human relationships.

So here is where I think we are at.

Someday perhaps a product will be released and and version of open
source of some flavor. At that point, it will be as if this product
had never existed. It will be a new product and a new idea and a new
approach. Phil will then start over and build a new group of users
from scratch. People who are new to the web development world, and
don't have any of the history or baggage we all do for the most
part, will form his new business model, and slowly if at all, he
will have support again. Some of us might consider it if we see a
viable model.

Then each of us will have to decide if this "new product" is worth
taking a look at.

In the mean time, for me, it hurts in a personal way, to be treated
like this. I mean it cuts to the heart. Many comments of others on
the list reflect that hurt as well. I really know how this kind of
abuse hurts. Such hurt is often really deep.

I don't think any of us will ever understand how someone can care so
little about others, or care so much about themselves, to treat
others in such a wasteful and abusive way when help was all around
them.

Everyone says how nice and well meaning the Witango folks are.
Perhaps in their own way or in their own minds. In any commercial
sense, they are not well meaning. However personable I think Phil
is and he has been nice to me the few times I have interacted, they
are not nice in a commercial sense. We can have a cup of hot cocoa
no problem. but commercial trust takes a long time to develop and
for most that is long gone.

I have this son, he gets three tickets, crunches a car and comes to

out power with my finger tips on the keyboard at a quickening
pace... those were the days.

I'll end my career in another programming language, and the best
part is, I don't know which one yet.

Take care everyone, thank you for taking time to read all my past
ramblings, forgive my mistakes and any terse comments I've made, and
I hope the very best for all of you, including Phil and Sophie.

Please drop me an email occasionally, let me know how you're doing,
or if you need a bit of help or advice. And if any of you are ever
in Nova Scotia Canada, please stop by for tea.

My fondest regards, and no regrets.

2008-10-20 Thread Dan Stein
I think some of that is what they are attempting to do. But it is hard
to know because the communication with the community is abysmal. I
love the IDE and the language and still use it. And I think Phil and
sophie are great people. But from a business standpoint this last 18
months of little or no communication is inexcusable.

At this point I would think we need several things

There needs to be someone there whos job includes community relations.
They should give us at least a monthly update and start out with a
detailed update of where they are and where they are heading

We should get an apology for the lack of communication to date

We should get a realistic estimate on when the product might be released

We should be able to know if when they overcome these legal hurdles,
will there be a shipping product or some beta period.

All reasonable questions. All have been asked before.

Please stop ignoring those who have stuck it out and continue to be
loyal.

Apparently there is a bug in outlook 2003 SP3 that can cause an html

I need to find a way to send the link in the email in an additional

I tried not using the href... in the html email and just putting the

2008-08-04 Thread Dan Stein
Gene,
The should be something coming soon. As far as I know it is just the legal
issues in moving toward open source holding things up. But I am hoping there
will be an update soon from With so we know where everything is at and then
monthly updates till things are ready to roll. At this point I think it is
better to have it move to open source.

At least on the Windows side it still is working well. Meanwhile all we can
do is wait and hope that communication can be more regular even if it is
just to say nothing has changed

I also read the list and am as frustrated as anyone else with the lack of
support and communication from With. This lack of communication and news on
the product is one of the reasons my company has decided to move away from
Witango. It's hard to defend a product to management types when you don't
hear about it, no one seems to be using it and the only real support you can
contact are the people on this list and a semi-searchable e-mail archive.

Has anyone thought of suggesting to a larger company, like Apple or Oracle,
that they look at Witango as an acquisition? We are moving to Oracle and in
the training I have taken so far their reporting and programming tools are
far from the power Witango provides. Yes, I know Witango is supposed to be
going open source but, to me anyway, it seems like another dead end. I mean,
six months with no word? Even if things are running into roadblocks, which
always seems to happen, at least there could be monthly communication
stating that fact.

Some of us must have contacts within larger companies that might be able to
get them to at least look at Witango and evaluate it. Some company other
than Pervasive that is. *grins* If Apple or Oracle picked up Witango I
imagine within a relatively short time we'd see improvements, additional
functionality, and communications. It would also make it much, much easier
to sell to customers (I consider my management a customer) if we could say,
"Witango is an Apple (or place your large company name here) product."

I can understand everyone¹s frustration in this regard. Although I don¹t
post much, I do read emails on the list.
Communication is very important, and because of the lack of communication
unfortunately many people have left the WiTango technology.

I can only hope that the delay is because of something really good on the
horizon. I don¹t know how WiTango sales have been, or how much interest
there is in the community, but I hope it¹s enough to keep WiTango going.

understand why that is. I still love the product and even if 6 never came
out I would continue with 5.5 but it is a reasonable request from the
community that we be kept in the loop. Last we heard there were just a few
legal issues to resolve with open source license but then nothing. It has
been since 2/11/2008 since we had the last official word. 6 months.

Witango-Talk: [OFF] MySQL Trigger help

2008-06-02 Thread Dan Stein

I am new to using MYSQL usually use MSSQL.

I have a table called record

pk is record_uid (auto increments)

there is a column called record_uid_hash

this is a MD5 of record_uid

I want to create a trigger so when a new record is created the MD5 of
the record_uid is entered into the row.

MD5(record_uid)

I can't seem to get the syntax correct.

I use NAVACAT to admin the DB I am getting a message saying no such
trigger.

Any help would be appreciated.

You are using something like a SOAP class, that reads the WSDL and does all
the work for you. You have to do it entirely manually in witango. You have
to build the soap envelope, and use @URL, and there is a hack to specify
text/xml in http header.
