Hello Marco,

do a right-click on the installation file and choose Run as
administrator. I think second or third from top.

Disclaimer: my english is read-only.

I use wpkclient at shutdown for the same reasons (on Windows XP).
I tested it on Vista and had the same problems as you
(it’s being killed after about 30 seconds).
I did a detailed post about a year ago, but nobody responded.

After your post I resumed testing on Vista:
I changed some registry settings with no success.
I assume wpkgclient is not supposed to work on Vista/7
and I assume it will not be fixed
(it would be useful if the developers clarified this).

I considered nightly updates, but apparently GPO shutdown scripts works.
I use wpkgmessage.exe from contrib for visual feedback
(you have to expose GPO scripts and hide the cmd window,
otherwise everyone can kill it or worse).
The timeout for GPO scripts must be increased, I tested 3600 seconds.
gpsvc service PreshutdownTimeout must be increased too, I used 360 ms.

 Tests with ping 127.0.0.1 -n 1200 and –n 3000 were successessful.
An installation of Java was apparently successful
(I’m not familiar with Vista file and registry virtualization).
I’ll do further testing, but for now I have to suspend.

[wpkg-users] WPKG Client Settings

2010-03-25 Thread Brett Royles (IT Services)
Hi all,

I was wondering where the WPKG Client stores its settings for things like
environment variables and if its possible that we edit them outside the wpkg
client as we need to set a variable depending on which site our pc is in (via
AD).

Thanks

Most of WPKG Client's settings are stored in the registry in the similar
form like user passwords etc. - so it's not possible to edit them directly.

To edit the setting, see:

Ok.. I was hoping that some of them would be readable / editable .. there goes

If I don't set the variable in WPKG but set it via a GPO as a system variable
will WPKG honour those? (if that makes sense) within the XML for the software
install. (e.g. %software% = \\softwareserver\software\)

Re: [wpkg-users] WPKG client service script error on clean

2010-02-28 Thread Kevin Keane
You can also try http://wpkg.org/files/client/beta/1.3.14/ -
although there were almost no changes in machine account handling code.

I will do that for sure. I would like to clarify - do I have to make
the trasform with the Properties table additional record, pointing to
settings.xml file, or else .msi package install will fail?

I think instead of wasting time on creating a transform file (too bad
 AD
does not let you specify MSI parameters) you can just run a AD script:

 cscript \\path\to\wpkg.js /install:wpkg

Be aware that this will the wpkg package to your wpkg.xml file - i.e., it will
be managed software. If your profile does not contain wpkg, wpkg will be
uninstalled again.

Two ways around that. You can add the line:

Del %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\wpkg.xml to the AD script. That will make all
programs unmanaged again.

Or you can use msiexec.exe instead of wpkg.js to install your package. That
will install wpkg but leave it as unmanaged code. Specify the properties you
need on the command line (be aware that unlike a transform, msiexec will only
allow you to set properties that are spelled in all upper case in the MSI).

I see you're not using a path-user setting but instead the machine account. I
personally never tried it but remember that there were some discussions that
 in
certain cases it does not work properly. Tomasz can comment on this, he
 knows by
 heart I think.

This should generally work, but I never really had the chance to test it
personally, due to the lack of an AD controller here.

OK :-)

Well, I might get access to one, but so far, AD users here on the list
reported that using machine accounts work for them (but not for Samba
 though).

I do not know, is the machine account is responsible for the error. I think the
intermediate problem is to shallow error reporting code at that section, which
does not allow to pin-point the exact culprit.

Andrew: I assume the client was joined to the domain?

Yes it is. It is Windows 2000 native domain.

You can also try http://wpkg.org/files/client/beta/1.3.14/ - although there

I will do that for sure. I would like to clarify - do I have to make the

file, or else .msi package install will fail?

If it still doesn't work, please report it on http://bugzilla.wpkg.org/
 - I will be reminded to see what happens.

I am sorry, but I do not know what exactly to report. I think you all suppose,
that the problem is in the autehtication code section, when using machine
account. But from the error output, I am not so sure about that. I was educated
to report only the exact information, which is manifesting the bug, without any
hypotehsis of my own, in case if I am not developer intimate with the inner
workings of the software. I think this would be wise.

Regards,

Andrew.

Hi,

Hmm, maybe this points us to the problem. As Tomasz said the machine account
authentication is not working well with Samba domain controllers. Samba is
emulating a Windows 2000 domain (no AD). Maybe machine authentication is only
working in AD domains.

As I am using Samba domains only I am also using a dedicated user account which
is allowed to access the share. This works quite OK but I fully agree that using
the machine account would be quite an elegant way to authenticate.

No, you understood it wrong. It is Windows 2000 Active Directory domain in
Native mode (no pre-Windows 2000 domain controllers, like Windows NT4).

Samba domain should emulate standard domain features as well as Microsoft
native one. They had plenty of time and opportunity to reverse engineer
required protocols and functionality.

As I am using Samba domains only I am also using a dedicated user account

From my POV, this is the only solution, as it is safe and does not have any
administrative overhead. Therefore, if the client does not work, I think I
will have to fall back to the Group Policy script activation mode.

P.S. I cannot download beta from http://wpkg.org/files/client/beta/1.3.14/.

If you have wpkg package defined (including WPKG Client), it will
install WPK Client.

As AD is not able to handle MSI parameters (although it is advertised
that it handles MSI), or install exe and such, this was one of
motivations to write WPKG.

From experience, you'll have to decide if you want to use AD to deploy
packages or WPKG.
If you decide to use both, you'll likely to get confused one day, when
WPKG will install some package, then AD will remove it, then WPKG will
install it, and so on.

If you want seamless upgrades using MSI and parameters, Microsoft
recommends you to migrate to SMS.

I can confirm that the download works okay from Australia.

In terms of software deployment we'd love to stick to simply deploying msi
packages using group policy but this just isn't a practical position for
most of us. Given the variety of software delivery options employed by
vendors we looked for a setup neutral system and wpkg was the best available
at the time. I still believe it offers all sorts of benefits over other
deployment strategies and has the added bonus of being actively developed!

I would rather stick to MSI packages, as they allow seemless upgrade, when
new version is out. If it is not possible, I think, that server-mode
 deployment is better then.

If you have wpkg package defined (including WPKG Client), it will install
 WPK Client.

As AD is not able to handle MSI parameters (although it is advertised that
it handles MSI), or install exe and such, this was one of motivations to
 write WPKG.

From experience, you'll have to decide if you want to use AD to deploy
 packages or WPKG.
If you decide to use both, you'll likely to get confused one day, when WPKG
will install some package, then AD will remove it, then WPKG will install
 it, and so on.

If you want seamless upgrades using MSI and parameters, Microsoft
recommends you to migrate to SMS.

Again, works here - most likely a problem on your side.
But someone else could recommend if it works for them or not.

Would be nice. I tried visual traceroute to wpkg.org server, it seems, that
there is are no problems. Therefore maybe only my route is bad.

OK. I understood. wpkg.js is capable to deploy WPKG client itself. But doesn't
this implies, that in such configuration, one must have two different
WPKG-server side folder trees with .xml config files, sub-folders and packages?
This is because WPKG client must have different tree to pull deployment
information. If only one tree will be used, both AD-executed wpkg.js and the
WPKG client will deploy packages twice. Or if wpkg.xml local datastore escapes
this situation, then only wpkg.js will do actual deployment, and when WPKG
client is run, it will have no actual jobs to do. Is this right or not?

\ As AD is not able to handle MSI parameters (although it is advertised

Yes, it does not handle. On the other side, MSI often can be edited directly,
or MST transform created to add those command line parameters. Not an intuitive
way, but possible.

In any case WPKG is salvation, as MSI is not available to all software, and
some software cannot be cleanly re-wrapped from .exe recorded to .msi.

 packages or WPKG.
If you decide to use both, you'll likely to get confused one day, when

I do not think so :-) If there is MSI package, it will be deplyed by Active
Directory software deployment, as it fast, convienient and most of the time
works OK. In case there is no MSI package, WPKG is a way to go. I do believe,
that in some cases MSI package will not deploy well through AD, so WPKG can
help in this case also.

Oh, M$ recomends to buy software assurance for 3 years in advance, don't they?

The reason is that during manual /install:wpkg operation WPKG writes the wpkg

Heh, now I have a joke. After unsuccessfull first deployment of 1.3.9 client, I

changed nothing in config. I am happy, but at a loss. I do not know, if other
clients will follow this good habit, I will have to check this out.

The only problem I have now, that I cannot disable WSH Success Audit entries
in the Windows Application Log. It fills everything up. I have cheched
everywhere, and it seems, that there is no any /debug /verbose parameters
anywhere, and config.xml entries all were set as conservative, as possible. Log
file is not generated at all now, only these WSH entries.

I have deployed WPKG client on the other workstation. Depolyment went well, no
errors. And it does not have WSH success audit entries overfill. Maybe you
know whats is the problem here, and in such case may you please give me some

 Hi

Samba domain should emulate standard domain features as well as
Microsoft native one. They had plenty of time and opportunity to
reverse engineer required protocols and functionality.

Samba supports Active Directory only as a domain member, and that works quite
well as long as you don't use IPv6.

As a domain controller, it still only emulates the NT4-style domains. Samba 4
will finally support Active Directory as a domain controller, but I'm not
really holding my breath for it. The development pace is glacial.

Development for it started early this century. The first public preview came
out in 2006, and a few alpha releases (marked as dangerous for production use)
have come out since then. Alpha 1 came out in 2007, and now they are at Alpha
11. Maybe they'll have it out of beta by 2015? If you want to play with it, you
can download it at http://www.samba.org/samba/ftp/samba4/ but don't put it in
production.

I think the main problems were threefold. First, there were legal issues - even
if it was easy to reverse engineer, you may not be allowed to do it (those
issues mostly got resolved thanks to the EU Antitrust lawsuit. Apparently,
Microsoft still hasn't been all that forthcoming with documentation). Second,
apparently the Samba code base did not lend itself to Active Directory; they
pretty much had to start over from scratch for Samba 4. And third, I suspect
that the developers themselves were only half-heartedly interested in AD. I
recall hearing that Andrew Tridgell considered rsync a more important project
than Samba.

As I am using Samba domains only I am also using a dedicated user
 account which
is allowed to access the share. This works quite OK but I fully agree
 that using
the machine account would be quite an elegant way to authenticate.

From my POV, this is the only solution, as it is safe and does not
have any administrative overhead. Therefore, if the client does not
work, I think I will have to fall back to the Group Policy script
 activation mode.

Group Policies are closely connected to Active Directory. I believe there are
ways to make them somewhat work with Samba, but you will be spending a lot of
time tweaking things, and you'll be on your own. Also, even if you make it
work, startup scripts are a Group Policy extension that is pretty much
guaranteed to not work.

As for machine account vs. user account: NT4 domains (and thus, Samba domains)
do have machine accounts. But they don't have startup scripts. They only have
logon scripts that are executed AFTER logon in the context of the individual
user.

I don't think there is a centrally-administered way around that in a Samba
domain.

 stop working?

Yeah. It seems it was too much for me for 1 day. After letting AD Software
Installation to upgrade 1.3.9 to 1.3.14 beta, there is no suddenly problem,
which was filed under bug 182.

In addition, the problem with WSH over-reporting Success Audit events to
Windows Application Log on the 1st workstation, which had this problems is gone
after upgrade.

I sincerely do not know what has changed :-|.

Maybe the settings.xml, because, after I tried 1.3.14 beta, I installed this
client on the management workstation and used it to generate settings.xml. I
did this because I thought, that maybe new client will need new XML file with
perhaps some new options. Maybe 1.3.9 client generates bad settings.xml files,
which used in the client run sequence under Windows AD, fails? I am unhappy
about myself, because I did not saved and documented each change in all files
while testing.

In addition:
1. .MSI packages do not have special table records to link files between
versions upgrades, to allow seamless upgrade. This fixup would be nice.
2. If .MSI files are upgraded in the replace mode, the upgrade in fact fails.
The failure is that in this replace mode, the WPKG Windows service is removed
in the upgrade process, but is not re-created when new package is installed in
place of the old. Perhaps this happens, because there is some bad access mode
to the windows service database. I will try upgrade mode, but I believe, that
this mode will be OK, as it will merely install new files over the old ones
without changed service DB/registry.

Regards,

Andrew.

[wpkg-users] WPKG client service script error on clean install

2010-02-26 Thread Vasaris
Hello,

For the start let me thank the developers and maintainers of this project,
as it is very usefull. I am newbie here, therefore pardon for my incompetence.
I have started depolyment of WPKG from scratch. If I understand correctlly,
there are two separate modes of the execution - server-side based push-pull
with AD/logon script, and client mode pull-only. I started with the first
server-side mode. It functions correctly, and the wpkg.js from wpkg.bat runs
OK, reads XML definitions, and deploys the packaged (at this time only timesych
to test) OK, leaving the log file and Eventlog full with debug info.
Yet, I have issue with the Client (1.3.9 32 bit) service error. It is logged
in Windows Application log and is as follows:

Event Id 1, Error, WpkgService, Script execution: failure. Exit code: 1. There
are informative events before and after this one, but none of the indicate the
problems.

The service was deployed in the domain, with Active Directory IntelliMirror
- msi package. There was issue, that MSI package deployment hanged in the
Installing WPKG... screen interminentely, until workstation was rebooted. The
issue was tracked down to the fact, that I did not use Orca MSI editor to add
the config file location table record. After the transform with the record was
added, and MSI package republished, the MSI install was a success.

After this, I uploaded settings.xml file to the target workstation, which I
have preprared and exported from the additional workstation, where WPKG client
was installed manually. It is as follows:

2. To restart serveral times.

When I try to run WPKG client on the other workstation with settings.xml loaded
in the test mode, it runs dubiously:

There are no Failed Audit entries neither on the workstation, or the server,
auditing is turned on for sure.

Please notice, that WPKG in server mode executes flawlessly. Yet it would be
good to use client mode, to give info to the users, that something is
happening, to give information.

Therefore, any help with the client problem would be super. I will be waiting

I suggest you to try using a path-user (DOMAIN\user notation) and password in

This is a typical scheme shown when WPKG client fails to connect to the network

I see you also added /debug to the WPKG parameters. I recommend you to use
/synchronize only and control the debug level within config.xml. This will
allow you to change it later without having to re-deploy a configuration update

Hi Rainer,

 Hi Vasaris,

Of course I did so. The second workstation was used to generate settings.xml,
which was uploaded to the first one by deployment script, before WPKG client
was installed.

I see you're not using a path-user setting but instead the machine account.

Yes, I do so. I chose this, because I do want to use and deploy user account
with the administrative priviles in the domain, as well as the password for
that account. If it is possible to run under system account, in impersonated
environment, I think, it is best solution.

I personally never tried it but remember that there were some discussions
 that in
certain cases it does not work properly. Tomasz can comment on this, he knows

That would be best. I do want to switch to dedicated user+password scenario, as
it is less secure and has a weak point, if the password changes/expires, user
account is disabled, or any other accident.

I suggest you to try using a path-user (DOMAINuser notation) and password in
order to use this user to connect to the specified share.

I can do that, but is this the only solution? If so, then I think, that I will
fall back to the first mode - when Active Directory Startup script calls
wpkg.bat, and this one calls wpkg.js, which in turn runs the deployment cycle.
I will not use client in such case. This is because, if I understand the
documentation correctly, then the client does not work in NT 6.0/6.1 - vista+w7.

  2010-02-26 17:39:46 - Starting script action execution
  2010-02-26 17:39:48 - Script action execution done.
  2010-02-26 17:39:48 - Script execution: failure. Exit code: 1

Hmz. Maybe then it would be good idea to rewrite error handling routine to
output failure indicating exact reason of the failure.

I see you also added /debug to the WPKG parameters. I recommend you to use
/synchronize only and control the debug level within config.xml. This will
allow you to change it later without having to re-deploy a configuration
 update
 to your clients.

This is testing scenario, with only one isolated workstation. Of course in the
production it will be changed back.

Regards,

Andrew.

This should generally work, but I never really had the chance to test it
personally, due to the lack of an AD controller here.

Well, I might get access to one, but so far, AD users here on the list
reported that using machine accounts work for them (but not for Samba
though).

Andrew: I assume the client was joined to the domain?

You can also try http://wpkg.org/files/client/beta/1.3.14/ - although
there were almost no changes in machine account handling code.

If it still doesn't work, please report it on http://bugzilla.wpkg.org/

[wpkg-users] WPKG Client 1.3.10 released (testing release)

2010-01-24 Thread Tomasz Chmielewski

WPKG Client 1.3.10 has been released.

This is *not* intended for production environments and is designed for
testing purposes only.

It is available for download at http://wpkg.org/files/client/beta/1.3.10/

This release should fix the following problems:

- crashing on XP SP3 with offline mode enabled,
- service removal problem, if the service is already started,
- WPKG Client fails to start wpkg.js on some hardware.

Other changes:

1. Improve pinging/detection of the server
2. Do not execute processes synchronously
3. Retry some actions if they failed (settable in GUI)
4. Increase pinging time

Please test and report back any issues found/remaining.

Re: [wpkg-users] wpkg client: server settings, using http

2009-10-06 Thread Rainer Meier
Hi mcduck

mcduck wrote:
Shouldn't it be possible to use a webserver for sharing the settings,
profiles and so forth, as compared to a file server?

I am not using any domain, and would like to use wpkg over the internet.
According til feature nbr. 8 on http://wpkg.org/WPKG_overview it should be
 possible.

WPKG requires an SMB/CIFS share to ber un from - sorry, but windows scripting
host (WSH) does not support running *.js scripts from HTTP. So you will in any
case need a Windows file share.
Item #8 on the page referred says that you do NOT need a domain controller. But
Windows shares do not require a domain controller. You can use a simple NAS
device too.

WPKG itself allows you to store packages.xml, profiles.xml and hosts.xml on an
HTTP server. This was implemented to allow web-based management tools which
generate these files on-the-fly.
In addition WPKG supports downloading of files from HTTP servers (usually to
%TEMP% directory) in order to execute these files after downloading. This
theoretically allows you to provide the installer using HTTP, let it be
downloaded by WPKG and then installed.

However I am not aware that any larger deployment exists which uses this method.
It's not very widely tested and as you require a Windows share anyway it's not
very common to use HTTP for package fetching.

So consequently you need to have a windows file share to put WPKG on.

Theoretically you could write a script which downloads an archive from the
(HTTP-) server, extracts it and then runs wpkg.js (contained in the archive
downloaded). Everything else (packages.xml, hosts.xml, profiles.xml) can be
fetched from HTTP directly by WPKG but of course you could include it in the
archive mentioned above.

Using such technique you could provide a pure internet-based deployment:
1. script/rsync fetches WPKG from server (wpkg.xml, config.xml, packages.xml,
profiles.xml and hosts.xml)
2. script executes wpkg.js
3. wpkg downloads files specified in download / nodes
4. wpkg installs packages as specified
5. wpkg cleans up the system

Starting from item 3 everything is done exactly like any normal WPKG execution
(just using the download feature in WPKG).

Item 1 and 2 would have to be implemented in custom scripts.

Please note that many software licenses do not allow you to re-distribute the
packages in any way. So if you plan to offer such a service to the public you
might violate some license agreements.

Rainer

 Hi Stefan,

When you run WPKG at shutdown how to you prevent Windows from
 killing your processes ?

 Thanks
 Paul

Paul,
the WPKG client service is set to add a pre-shutdown delay, which you
specify in the client GUI, like the logon delay.
This is the maximum timeout after which the wpkg.js will be killed.

I do have some installations lasting between 30 and 45 minutes, so I set the
shutdown delay to the maximum possible, which is 90 minutes.
This way a big installation and some small ones can successfully finish, till
the machine finally shuts down.
I have included a timeout for the commands of these installations too, to avoid
waiting the whole 90 minutes in case of a failure.

See the Wiki for the possible timeout definitions.

[wpkg-users] WPKG client screen no displaying

2009-09-16 Thread Jacob Jarick
Hi,
I am a new user of WPKG - I am setting it up for a demo at the company I
work for.
Everything has gone smoothly, but the only thing I am having trouble
with atm is I cannot get the client screen to display while WPKG
installs the packages.

I set show in the client gui when creating settings.xml but no
difference.

Thanks Tomasz,
the delay brings up the gui :)

Unfortunately it seems to delay login by 1 minute everytime after that even if
there are no packages to be installed.
Is there a way around this or is it a current limitation ?

So far WPKG seems an ideal solution for our large network and I love how its
configured through local xml files, excellent program/project.

It shouldn't be the case.
If the delay is enabled and wpkg.js has really nothing to do, you should
see this dialog for 10 seconds or so (the time when wpkg.js starts,
reads config files, makes check and eventually quits).

If the delay is longer for you, this might suggest that wpkg.js is
really doing something (hangs at installing something etc.).

To find out what it could be, set logging to your server in config.xml,
and just browse the log (and check the timestamps) for a given
workstation (the one which you think shouldn't be doing anything, but
has a logon delay window waiting).

[wpkg-users] WPKG client issue on Vista

2009-08-12 Thread David Christensen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

When I start the wpkg client on vista hosts it immediately fails and
then stops. The error in the event viewer is for the WpkgService and
simply says Script execution failure.

Not sure what this means, I tested the wpkg settings and everything
tested ok. What else do I need to look at on the client side to get a
better understanding of what is failing?

Is there anything in Vista that I need to do differently then XP clients
to accommodate the differences in OS?

Can you paste the event log here?

What version of WPKG Client do you use?

If you're logged in as a (domain) administrator, you probably have
network shares already mapped.

Therefore the test will most likely work, even if you use wrong credentials.

I logged in as local admin and also tried logging in as a domain user

ended up configuring wpkg to use the domain user for access to the share
and the admin for execution context. Is the access denied error coming
from the host or the samba share?

I am trying to use the download xml function to see if I get any
different results. It appears to down load the file however when i try
to install the file wpkg can't find it. I thought Windows stuck temp
files in %TEMP%?

If you're logged in as a (domain) administrator, you probably have
network shares already mapped.

Therefore the test will most likely work, even if you use wrong credentials.

However now that I can keep wpkg running, I am not able
to install any applications, I get an error invalid username or bad
password when it tries to run the package cmd specified in package.xml.
Is there a particular wpkg client configuration that I need to use for
Vista clients?

I'm not sure - could be UAC related?

I logged in as local admin and also tried logging in as a domain user
with access to the wpkg share that also has local admin privileges. I
ended up configuring wpkg to use the domain user for access to the share
and the admin for execution context. Is the access denied error coming
from the host or the samba share?

Samba denies access.
But to be sure, set log level = 3 in smb.conf, and see what is logged
in Samba logs.

I am trying to use the download xml function to see if I get any
different results. It appears to down load the file however when i try
to install the file wpkg can't find it. I thought Windows stuck temp
files in %TEMP%?

Do you mean wpkg.xml - http://wpkg.org/Wpkg.xml?

Or something else?

Hi Andrea,

Andrea Zagli wrote:

Exactly, if you put the full netbios name into the host definition WPKG should
not even try to read the IP and therefore no error should be logged.

However I agree that putting full netbios names is usually inconvenient if you
have quite a lot of machines. So regular expressions (like .*) are more
convenient. In this case you will see this single error line logged because WPKG
cannot read the IP and then it continues as usual. So you can just ignore this
error unless you really want to use IP-adress-based matching.

Hi Andrea,

Andrea Zagli wrote:

ip, i have only host names

You cannot - at least not directly.

WPKG first tries to match your host name directly to the name specified in the
hosts.xml file. If the host file matches the host-name 1:1
(character-by-character) then no IP match is done. If it does not match directly
(e.g. if you use regexp) then WPKG tries to read the IP of the machine and match
the hostname to the IP string (this part fails on W9x).
If still no match is found then the host definition is interpreted as a regular
expression and matched against the hostname again.

As I wrote there is no negative effect besides that the IP-matching does not
work on W9x. In case you insert complete hostnames into hosts.xml then no error
should be logged.

Andrea,
this registry key is only available on Winodws NT, which includes NT4, 2000,

I think the WPKG client is not meant for Window 9x/ME, since this branch is
dead for along time now, even if it is still used in some environments.

[wpkg-users] WPKG Client (1.0.4) with /logLevel:31 but almost no information in logfile

2009-04-29 Thread Frank Thommen
Hi,

to debug an installation problem I'm currently having, I set the
following WPKG client settings (with the GUI):

WPKG parameters: /synchronize /nonotify /logLevel:31
Log to file: yes
Logfile: C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Desktop\wpkg

However when restarting or starting the WPKG service, only very basic
informations are written to it:

2009-04-29 18:20:25 - Cleanup done.

2009-04-29 18:26:11 - Cleanup done.

I also tried the /debug option to no avail.

Is there a way to have a similary detailed logging into the logfile as
one would have when running wpkg.js on the command line with `cscript`?

I don't/can't use `cscript`, because it seems that the variables that
are defined with the WPKG GUI are not expanded in this case.

Thanks

Sorry, I'm a little bit confused, so I ask again to be sure: The file
defined in the Misc Settings tab of the WPKG client is *not* the file,
the WPKG client logs to? Instead in this file it writes the information
it would otherwise write to the Event Log?

If yes: Isn't that a little bit confusing :-) ?

The parameters you gave are for wpkg.js - and it logs to a _file_

Sorry, I'm a little bit confused, so I ask again to be sure: The file
defined in the Misc Settings tab of the WPKG client is *not* the file,
the WPKG client logs to? Instead in this file it writes the information
it would otherwise write to the Event Log?

If yes: Isn't that a little bit confusing :-) ?

There are two components here:
- WPKG Client - it starts wpkg.js
- WPKG (wpkg.js) - it installs programs etc.

Both have independent logging.

Logging for WPKG (wpkg.js) is specified in config.xml file.

OK. My misconception was, that the settings from the WPKG client GUI in
fact *were* settings for wpkg.js.

However: In config.xml I've now set

param name='debug' value='true' /
param name='logfilePattern' value='wpkg-[HOSTNAME]-[YYY].log' /

while not changing the other (default) values. (Re)starting the WPKG
service does not yield any logging or a new logfile in %TEMP%.

Hi Frank,

However: In config.xml I've now set

 param name='debug' value='true' /

This parameter controls how much logging is written to the event log by wpkg.js.
As wpkg.js historically logged to event log the debug parameter controlled the
detail of logs written to event log. It's strongly recommended to set this
parameter to false for productive environments. It could even fill up the
maximum space allowed for event log (mainly an issue for small-sized logs in
Windows XP) and then the system or programs might start to behave oddly or to
crash. Instead you should change the logLevel parameter - which is by default
anyway set to 0xFF (log everything).

As you wrote in an earlier post you appended /logLevel:31 to the command line of
wpkg.js. If you don't need so I recommend to remove this parameter on
client-side and configure logLevel in config.xml instead.

 param name='logfilePattern' value='wpkg-[HOSTNAME]-[YYY].log' /

This is fine.

while not changing the other (default) values. (Re)starting the WPKG
service does not yield any logging or a new logfile in %TEMP%.

Are you sure you're checking the right %TEMP% directory? WPKG client executes
wpkg.js within SYSTEM context. Usually %TEMP% for the system user refers to
%SystemRoot%\temp (c:\windows\temp). So if you access %TEMP% on your user
account you will check in
C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp
or (on XP)
c:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temp

Alternatively just specify a log_file_path value of C:\\temp\ in order to
write the file into any hard-coded path which you know how it's resolved.

So you will for sure not find the log file placed to the system Temp folder.

True, but for strong passwords, this is only given enough time (where
enough can have very high values).

Even so, WPKG Client needs to access its %SOFTWARE% share credentials in
plain text somehow, so no amount of encryption will help if you can access
the same data with the same privileges as WPKG Client.

 That's why it's best to:
 - use SYSTEM account for executing processes started by WPKG Client
 - use credentials which only allow access to your %SOFTWARE% share (but
 don't allow to log in)

Indeed, I agree. However, my point was as to where to store the %SOFTWARE%
share credentials, and obscuring them is not a security measure, as they need
to be available in plain text at some point anyway.

Even better yet, with the latest testing release of WPKG Client, it is
possible to connect to a share with computer credentials. However, I'd like
to get more feedback about it (if/how it works).

I haven't tried it, but it sounds interesting. I'll give it a spin and report
back on it over easter, I guess.

Cheers,
-B

Yes, you are right. This is an issue of the installer (the installer
itself seems to be 32-bit) but has no impact on the functionality or the
fact that WPKG itself is 64-bit. An issue I can live with at the moment.

The same also happened to Sun Microsystems VirtualBox recently

Hmm, I don't know :-)

Hi,
I am using the version from 2009-01-09 without problems on Windows XP x64
Edition.
I would not use the 32-bit version on 64-bit Window, since %ProgramFiles% and
other things are not set correctly for 64-bit applications.
You can use the JS wrapper, but I found it easier to use the 64-bit client ;-)

Thanks Tomasz for the 64-bit client ;-D

I strongly recommend to use 64-bit editions of WPKG client too. The
JavaScript wrapper.js was just a work-around for WPKG to allow it to
run on 64-bit script.exe when no 64-bit edition of WPKG client was
available.

Currently I consider wrapper.js to be deprecated. It might be useful as
a work-around for 64-bit WPKG client problems but should not be used
within productive environments.
