[WSG] excerpt:SitePoint Design View #9 - Small Screen Development
Testing for Smartphones PDAs So, you were won over to the 'standards compliancy' argument. You now build your pages to HTML standards and sleep soundly in the knowledge that your work is accessible and device-independent. Ok, the reality isn't quite that easy, but it's a good place to start. The most depressing part is that, with the proliferation of phone/PDA-based browsing, there are now dozens of mobile browsers out there with viable markets. The list of key players include AvantGo, Blazer, DoCoMo, EudoraWeb, ftxBrowser, PalmSource, Nokia Mobile Browser, NetFront, OpenWave, Opera for Mobile, Plucker and Xiino -- just to name a few. The second depressing thing is they are actually getting harder to design for as they become more 'advanced'. In the past you could rely on them to simply ignore JavaScript and CSS. Not any more. Most now know just enough to get you into trouble. Fortunately, at this point in time, most of us aren't required to focus on delivering content to mobile devices. However, with Tim Berners-Lee this week announcing the W3C's 'Mobile Web Initiative', I thought now might be a good time for you to see how your current code fairs. [WSG] [Possibly OT] Conundrum between attribution VS disclosure for results of work
Hi I am in a conundrum at the moment and dont know which right is legally stronger out of attribution VS disclosure attribution = the right to be identified as the creator of material (ie: my right) disclosure = the right to determine if and when material is made public (right of the companies I've subcontracted for) Background: I do a lot of sub-contractual work, mainly using web standards eg: converting invalid code to standards compliant code, advising developers how to improve their practices, working from a photoshop template to create an XHTML/CSS template etc My problem is when I am being interviewed for a new contract postion, interviewers ask for concrete examples this very second of which websites I've worked on recently through my sub-contracting work. They say eg: Anyone can say they worked for ExampleCorp GenericITagency, we want specific URL's of your work to see what you can do So far I've stonewalled and said they're free to call ExampleCorp GenericITagency to confirm I've done work for them, but Im not sure im legally allowed to reveal specific URL's. They respond saying other interviewees are willing to reveal details so I should too, and I end up disadvantaged :-( Ironically I wouldnt be surprised if these same companies looking for contractors make their staff sign NDA's prohibiting them from mentioning what they have done to a new employer! [WSG] Taming Your Multiple IE Standalones
Multiple versions of Explorer for Windows on a single computer have revolutionized CSS bug testing for websites, but sadly the different IE browser windows appear identical to the eye, potentially leading to confusion and testing mistakes. Have I tested every single one of them? No, of course not. But Hotmail and Gmail I have tried and this technique works well for those two as well as most e-mail clients. The trick is to use NO part of the webpage above and including the BODY tag. Hotmail and other web-based readers strip everything above the BODY tag, so you lose all of that. Take a look at my below example. (It's a bit wide in a browser, but in an e-mail client window it's fine. Just narrow your browser window a bit.) Look at the source to see the Trick: http://www.nlgjany.org/e_mail_announce/ The trick is to put the whole page in 2 Wrapper elements, and then put the CSS styles just inside the first Wrapper. No HTML tag. No BODY tag. NOTE 1: Hotmail and Gmail both don't display perfectly; Hotmail doesn't get floats correct sometimes, and Gmail doesn't display images by default - you have to turn that on in each mail. NOTE 2: That said, this mail technique will degrade nicely (as all XHTML/CSS should) in mail clients that are set to Not Display Complex HTML, or Not Display Images, or Not Allow Internet Access When Displaying Complex HTML. At worst, the reader should display simple HTML, showing Headers, Paragraphs and Lists, etc. Hope this helps! [WSG] ECMAScript collapsible Menu System
There has been lots written about separating content from presentation, and most developers see the benefit of this approach (cleaner, leaner markup; faster download speeds; easier maintainability, etc). There is also a fair amount written about separating behaviour from both content and presentation, but it tends to be practiced less than separation of content from presentation. HTML (or even XHTML) should be used for content , CSS for presentation, and ECMAScript for behaviour. All the time JavaScript was a Netscape proprietary technology, its use could not be endorsed by the W3C. In the middle of 1998, the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) created a public domain specification based on JavaScript, but using a standardised Document Object Model. The third edition of the ECMAScript Language Specification was published in December 1999; Standard ECMA-262. To illustrate using a completely separate behavioural layer, I'll demonstrate a collapsible menu system. All of the examples are HTML, but work equally well as XHTML, even when served with the correct MIME type. read on at http://juicystudio.com/ecmascriptmenu.asp -- Neerav Bhatt http://www.bhatt.id.au Web Development IT consultancy http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ - Ramblings Thoughts http://www.bhatt.id.au/photos/ http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/neerav ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

They want to use a full page graphic Splash Screen, which displays the brand in all its glory before the user can enter the site. 2. They want to use images in the Navigation bar to give tight control over the fonts, instead of text. I do not want to use a splash screen, because it will just get in the way, and could turn viewers away. I do not want to use images in the navigation, not only for usability / accessibility / SEO reasons, but because the site is dynamic and I want the Nav to be dynamically driven. I just wondered if any of you know of any websites which show solid convincing arguments against these things, so that I can prove my point. You can use CSS to indent text with padding and whatever else, but that's a pain if you have a sitewide CSS file, and the text to be indented doesn't sit in any defining container --- Example 1: Just the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried, As he landed his crew with care; Supporting each man on the top of the tide By a finger entwined in his hair. may be marked up as a single paragraph (as it corresponds to a single stanza of a poem -- in this case, the first stanza of Louis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark, just for a random example.) as follows: pJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,br / As he landed his crew with care;br / Supporting each man on the top of the tidebr / By a finger entwined in his hair./p --- As line break tags br / are self-closing elements, I don't *think* it is possible to style with them (e.g. to indent the relevant lines) -- and, even if it were, it would be an ugly solution (assuming I'm even thinking along the right lines, and that it would work at all): --- Example 2: pJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,br class=indent / As he landed his crew with care;br / Supporting each man on the top of the tidebr class=indent / By a finger entwined in his hair./p --- Assuming the style would apply to the following, and not preceding, line. This example is untested, and would most likely not work at all. I'm just thinking out loud. One potential solution (albeit a hideous and bloated one) is simply to use repeated non-breaking space characters: --- Example 3: pJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,br / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; As he landed his crew with care;br / Supporting each man on the top of the tidebr / nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;By a finger entwined in his hair./p --- but that, of course, probably isn't the most desirable solution. In terms of light markup (but of dubious semantic appropriateness), I've seen definition lists employed to this end quite effectively: --- Example 4: dl ddJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried, dl ddAs he landed his crew with care;/dd /dl /dd ddSupporting each man on the top of the tide dl ddBy a finger entwined in his hair./dd /dl /dd /dl This renders without any problems in visual user agents without styling required, and is apparently valid XHTML -- but it seems dubious to me. It appears structurally better, at least to me (my eyes follow the markup flow more easily than the other examples above), but that doesn't deal with the issue of semantics. Is it okay to have untitled definitions? Is it okay to use definition lists like this at all? Or, better still, does someone have another solution which I've missed completely? Re: [WSG] default place-holders for forms
Right, Now I understand The guidelines say all form elements need to have default text inside them, but a form field with the type=password always renders as * regardless of the content I think commonsense should prevail and you should leave the password field empty, otherwise you will confuse some users Neerav Bhatt http://www.bhatt.id.au Web Development IT consultancy Mobile: +61 (0)403 8000 27 http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ - Ramblings Thoughts http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/neerav Andreas Boehmer wrote: -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Neerav 1. [WSG] heading background continues across container width
Hi Im experimenting with some techniques from dan cederholms book Web Standards Solutions and found that setting a background image like so h1 , h2 , h3 , h4 , h5 { text-align : left; padding-bottom: 14px; background: url(/img/under_heading.gif) repeat-x bottom; } caused the background image to continue across the whole container div width, my guess is that this occurs because Hx tags are BLOCK elements, so I added : display: inline; Which seemed to fix the problem, and made the background display only below the text in Hx tags, Are there any caveats to bear in mind when forcing Hx tags to be inline ? -- Neerav Bhatt http://www.bhatt.id.au Web Development IT consultancy Mobile: +61 (0)403 8000 27 http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ - Ramblings Thoughts http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/neerav ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **
Re: [WSG] heading background continues across container width
thanks James you have confirmed my suspicion that by default h elements are 100% wide everyone else, thanks for the suggestions. I only had it set on inline for a few minutes anyway as i knew it was not the best method, and I know that As soon as you convert something to inline you allow other inline elements to run up beside it I think I like the effect of the image across the page anyway, so in the end no changes are needed :-) I see that i didnt link to my experiment in the question so heres the URL http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ Neerav Bhatt http://www.bhatt.id.au Web Development IT consultancy Mobile: +61 (0)403 8000 27 http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ - Ramblings Thoughts http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/neerav James Denholm-Price wrote: On Sat, 02 Oct 2004 16:16:43 +1000, Neerav [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Im experimenting with some techniques from dan cederholms book Web Standards Solutions and found that setting a background image like so h1 , h2 , h3 , h4 , h5 { text-align : left; padding-bottom: 14px; background: url(/img/under_heading.gif) repeat-x bottom; } caused the background image to continue across the whole container div width, my guess is that this occurs because Hx tags are BLOCK elements, repeat-x makes the background image repeat across the whole width and by default h elements are 100% wide. Replacing it with no-repeat would ensure only one copy of the image appears. E.g. see http://www.w3schools.com/css/pr_background.asp James PS: inline worked because it made the heading shrink-wrap but you were probably lucky that it remained on a line of its own. The reason i'm asking is i'm working contractually with a company who's using XHTML doctypes on their templates and often improperly formed tables, (almost as far from XHTML as you can get sometimes and still get something to appear on the page) for their layouts and they're asking me for help to fix it. I've read somewhere that one should only use an XHTML doctype if you're using XML on the page or using css positioning exclusively. Anyone have a take on this or a good reference to consult? Note: i'm trying to be practical here - it's an urgent job, it's clear the company doesn't have anyone who knows anything about css positioning on board, and i'm a student of css positioning, not an expert. Fine for Win users, but a .exe file is not much use to Mac- or *nix-based visitors. The Adobe download site has the correct version for most OS's... Re: [WSG] Word documents saved as html and cleaned.
Ive never tried it but AFAIK Tidy http://tidy.sourceforge.net/ can be used server side to clean up code on POST eg: http://infohound.net/tidy/ -- Neerav Bhatt http://www.bhatt.id.au Web Development IT consultancy Mobile: +61 (0)403 8000 27 http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ - Ramblings Thoughts http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/neerav Nick Lo wrote: Hi Jonothan, Yeah, I'd considered that for the future however right now as far as I know Word 2004 on the Mac does not have the ability to save as XML. Since one of the users is a Mac user (so am i in fact) that solution will have to wait. Thanks, Nick My recommendation would be to create an XML schema and then use a product like infopath to export the xml (xhtml) to your CMS. jonothan ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ Proud presenters of Web Essentials 04 http://we04.com/ Web standards, accessibility, inspiration, knowledge To be held in Sydney, September 30 and October 1, 2004 See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

Re: [WSG] Unaccessible - NY Attorney General busts two big name sites
The more salient question would be whether corporates can be forced to do so in australia, as SOCOG was a government corporation. AFAIK whether australian corporates can be forced to comply to W3C/accessibility guidelines is untested in the courts. -- Neerav Bhatt http://www.bhatt.id.au Web Development IT consultancy Mobile: +61 (0)403 8000 27 http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ - Ramblings Thoughts http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/neerav Nick Cowie wrote: Cameron wrote: Did we resolve whether Australian legislation has the potential for similar effects?
