[wsjt-devel] My report about using RC5

2018-12-01 Thread Claude Frantz

Hi all,

While using the JT65 mode:

When double-click on the callsign of a CQ calling station, its callsign
and locator are NOT included in DX CAll and DX Grid. I have tried in the
"Band activity" side and in the "RX Frequency" side.

The red and green cursors, at the top of the waterfall, in the frequency
scale, are small as usual in JT9 mode.

If I remember well, these problems have already been reported. Please
accept this report as a confirmation.

I'm using 32 bit Fedora 28. The program has been compiled from source.

Best wishes,
Claude (DJ0OT)

[wsjt-devel] Graphic confusion ;-)

2018-12-01 Thread mail
Just a single confusing graphic detail that might be corrected: On the two
buttons for moving TX / RX to the same frequency, the arrows turn
illogically (remains from 1.9 and earlier). The arrows should turn opposite
so they point to what you do, i.e. that "Set RX frequency to TX frequency"
points from RX to TX. It took me some time to get used to making things
"wrong" to get the right result. :-)

Thank you for continuing the great work! :-)

Hi !

Would be nice if someone who have typed in all dial frequencies (whole
area of one band, all bands) could export them with "Save as" and share
the file.
Then it would be easy to make config copy to name "FT8-ru" (or
something) and import all frequencies to that configuration profile.

It would serve also in future without extra work.

I had enough for half an hour. It's boring. USA very weak signals

WSJT-X is much better now, but I think there is still a lot of work

But that would cause confusion to a lot of people who are new to the
digital modes seeing multiple frequencies on a single band for
JT65/JT9/FT8/etc.

Its much easier to have those who do contests (or follow DXPeditions)

1.  Create a new configuration for each contest. (IE:   RTTY Roundup)
2.  Go to the frequency settings
3.  Delete the entire table
4.  Add the frequencies used for that contest as listed in the rules.

Then all you have to do is select the BAND you want, rather than have to
sort though 2 or 3 frequencies on that band to get the right one.
Since many of the contests use the same frequencies each year, this only
has to be done once, and does not affect the frequency list in the other
configurations you have set up.

What's confusing is how people interpret the button.
It's a data-flow indicator showing the direction of data travel - it's not a
button which some seem to interpret as pointing to the thing you want to change.
It takes a bit of getting used to if you have the 2nd interpretation but
eventually your brain will click.

Hi Bill,

this is not within our control. Best we can hope for is that later
versions of the Qt framework that we use for cross platform GUI code
have resolved such minor issues. Unfortunately updating the version of
Qt we build with has other restrictions, particularly the operating
system versions supported. I am currently surveying the Mac users to see
if we can drop support for Mavericks 10.9 so that a defect in Qt 5.8 can
be fixed by switching to Qt 5.9 which has no support for 10.9. Similar
issues exist for MS Windows where we are stuck with Qt v5.5 until we can
drop support for Windows XP and Windows Vista, something I would dearly
like to do but I know there are many users out there with hardware that
will not support Windows 7 or later.

For some background, the Qt team are close to releasing v5.12 so we are
currently far behind the curve on defect repairs and new features on a
key component of WSJT-X.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Which FREQS for 1-2 Dec Roundup? +Bug found

2018-12-01 Thread Saku

Hi !

For lazy ones, like me, I have made freq export with all frequencies
listed in Ru rules (with step of 2kHz).
There is also a little README. It follows mainly just what Neil writes
below.
But you do not need to delete old freq settings, just load new ones
over. That will ask if old frequencies may be deleted.

It can be loaded from here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g3IXbZnpgiN7KZJXWwxv6Z7nqGbIwhNm/view?usp=sharing

Doing that I also found a bug from rc5!
When you "save as" frequency list by just giving some name like "FT8-Ru"
save dialog DOES NOT ADD file name suffix.
Then, when you load that file and have dialog filter "frequency files"
nothing is found.
I added manually ".frq" suffix, but either that is not right suffix or
filter "frequency files" is broken.
So, on load you have to select "all files" to see the frequency file to
pick up.

As someone who actually works in the computer industry on software,
getting people to upgrade is a mess. I can't tell you about the large
customers who refuse to update to anything from this decade, but there
are tons of them.

For a data point, think of how many people (not just hams) are on Win7
(or even XP).

Sir Joe and colleagues, my respect,

I had enough for half an hour. It's boring. USA very weak signals
(100W?), Few stations.
WSJT-X is much better now, but I think there is still a lot of work
ahead. It would be logical to combine the efforts of the WSJT-X and JTDX

Re: [wsjt-devel] RU logging

2018-12-01 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

Bands were dead here, and I had the same issue but I called VP8LP, got
no answer, called & worked someone else, had VP8LP call me, so I
double-clicked on him, and worked him, but the logging broke. I wasn't
able to tell what was wrong (trying desparately to get VP8 in my log)
but it looks like what happened to Jim.

Lucky, I worked him again later.

I only made four contacts and I thank those who were on the other end.

On Fri, 30 Nov 2018, Jim Shorney wrote:

Lots of fun tonight on 7.080. 20 contacts but it seemed like I had to work
harder than previous tests. Copied K1JT at -24 for a few minutes, so the band
definitely was not as good.

I was paying attention to the logging more closely based on some previous
comments and noted something that seems counter-intuitive to me. Here's the
scenario:

Call a CQing station with TX2
After two or three cycles with no response I terminate TX
Station subsequently responds to me with TX3
I re-enable transmit with TX4 and complete the contact.
I look at the log pop-up and note that it has not copied his report to me.

Not a big deal to enter it manually before I fire the OK button but is there a
way to fix this? It would be one less thing to have to look out for in the
mayhem of a contest.

Apologies if this has been already reported. It has been a challenge keeping up
with the volume of email the past few days, I can't imagine how the developers
handle it all!

73 es TNX for all the fantastic work!

Allan,

I think I see the problem. You are misinterpreting the word "to" in the
tool tip. If the tool tip for the arrow from Rx to Tx said, "Copy Rx freq
to Tx," instead of "Set Tx freq to Rx freq," (and conversely for the other
button), would that help?

Or, as has been suggested, just ignore the tool tip and look at the arrow
direction.

Hope that helps.

Having written database software for mostly non-technical users, I
completely agree. Users love progress, but they hate change. In order to
get enthusiastic adoption of new releases, I had to show it would be
easier, faster, or more powerful for the users.

Hams, on the other hand, are technically-oriented, and I'm a bit surprised
at the reluctance to move forward. I love new releases and exploring the
new capabilities. But that's an engineer talking.

Urp .. re-read your post,  RC5 but it wouldn't truncate anything. If
this were happening more people would have reported this. Even the Tx1
message should have been fine.

Again, a full screen cap of the entire window would help.

Hi Drew,

thanks for the issue report, we are aware of this anomaly. It looks like
C4XMAS is not being correctly detected as a valid non-standard callsign
and is causing correctly generated messages to be encoded as free text

Bill, You really should change the tooltips though. "Set Tx frequency to Rx
Frequency" makes it sound like the direction is from Tx to Rx, and then the

"Copy Tx frequency to Rx frequency" or "Push Tx frequency to Rx frequency"

Paul,

take the sentence "Set Tx frequency to Rx Frequency", I read the word
"Set" to mean change or adjust as per definition 12(a) here:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/set .

I find it hard to interpret the sentence as the opposite. If anything
the arrow direction has potential for different interpretations
depending on the assumed context, i.e. is it the frequency that is being
moved or is it something else that has the opposite sense.

As I said, it is an endian type issue. At risk of causing a religious

Hi OM,

On the menu "File->Reset Cabrillo Log ...". Don't forget to export the
Cabrillo log entry file before doing that if you intend to submit an entry,
otherwise you be spending a long time piecing together an entry manually
from your ADIF log and ALL.TXT file.

Another option is to use N1MM Logger+ by switching on the option to send
logged QSOs to it directly during the contest.

[wsjt-devel] Disable New Grid Colors before test

2018-12-01 Thread Dave Q

Are you saying to clear the log, export it as a blank log. Then when the
contest is over export to the already created blank log. Or just saying make
sure to clear the log so if there were already entries those would have to be
edited out of the contest submission.

Sorry to be dense but this will be my first attempt to submit a contest log.
But don’t want to waste the time of people who know what they’re doing and may
be counting on their contact with me. Doubtful but you never know.

[wsjt-devel] Any way to get dupe checking in contest mode?

2018-12-01 Thread Keith Maton via wsjt-devel
Running on 80m now but picking out stations I haven’t worked - With only 20 Qs
in the log it’s fairly easy to see who I’ve worked before but is there any way
to get dupe checking somehow?

I’m using a Mac so linking to something like N1MM isn’t possible.

[wsjt-devel] RC5 - Possible Bug

2018-12-01 Thread Edfel Rivera
Hi All:

First I am very positive with WSJTX v2 RC5. Have worked DX many US states,
Poland, Slovenia, and more. One thing I have noticed when PPT is active
open windows get input and not respond to OS as should. OS Windows 10.
Not sure if others have observed this behavior.

Very pleased with Contest logging feature. Keep up the excellent work!!

Hi David and all

Same problem here. I’m on 7090 (40m as it is nearly 9 p.m. here) having plenty
of signals in the waterfall display, but very few decodes. Changing back to
V1.9.1 no decode at all (as expected). Changing to 7074 getting dozens of
decodes per time slot. Clocks are accurate.

Tried this on two different Laptop Computers with Win7 and Win10 and of course
with V2-rc5. Both the same result. I even cannot decode my own signal from one
computer to the other one, however no problem to decode my own signal with
V1.9.1.

Hi Edfel,

the upper box is for entering your ARRL Field Day exchange, it is not
relevant to ARRL RTTY Roundup mode. DX in the lower box is correct for

Same issue here. Had to insert the sent report before it would go to the log.
Even after when I did an ADIF file I have stuff to fix. Instead of the 539
etc. it just put out 59. It did recognize it was Digital/FT8.

I'm working some people in the warm ups on 14.130. I've had to manually insert
my SENT report each time before it will log. Is anyone else having that issue?
Using RC5 v 737d2f. and I do have "Show DXCC, grid, and worked-before status"
checked.

I do like how, for example -10 converts automatically to 549 in the contest
mode. Finally, a contest that's not an automatic 599.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Invalid QSO - Solution

2018-12-01 Thread Michael Baker
I tried a full reset of everything. Now it doesn't turn the program off but
the report fields are still left blank. TAB only moves the cursor. Reset
the time with Dimension 4 just because.
Still get "can't log" error message but when the data is put in all is ok.
For some unknown reason my N3FJP Software is not getting the info. Rig is
Flexradio 6300, WSJTX is hooked up to it as a TS2000 and all seems to be
working there. The Logging program has the Flex API running on COM5 (Slice
A) and it appears to work but for some reason the two programs are not
talking to each other.
Very agrevating when you consider it was working, YESTERDAY and logging
into ACLog just fine.

2018-12-01 Thread Gary Hinson
This zombie topic has been around since the early days of FT8. According to
some, the arrows point the correct way, according to others they point
backwards. Like the arrows, there are arguments both ways. Clearly, it’s an
individual thing.

Would it not be possible (at some future point – not urgently) to make the
arrow direction a user config option?

What's confusing is how people interpret the button.

It's a data-flow indicator showing the direction of data travel - it's not a
button which some seem to interpret as pointing to the thing you want to change.

It takes a bit of getting used to if you have the 2nd interpretation but
eventually your brain will click.

Just a single confusing graphic detail that might be corrected: On the two
buttons for moving TX / RX to the same frequency, the arrows turn illogically
(remains from 1.9 and earlier). The arrows should turn opposite so they point
to what you do, i.e. that "Set RX frequency to TX frequency" points from RX to
TX. It took me some time to get used to making things "wrong" to get the right
result. :-)

Thank you for continuing the great work! :-)

still issue. WSJT-X is sending all data over, less "St/Pr/#" field (I'm

and WSJT-X returning error:

It is listing correctly in WSJT-X Contest Log window...

Re: [wsjt-devel] Any way to get dupe checking in contest mode?

2018-12-01 Thread Grant VK5GR
Keith,

I have been trying to figure out how to get dupe alerts etc too.

N1MM doesn’t do it - because the station is not loaded into the main entry
window of N1MM and only appears at the end of the QSO directly into the log via
UDP - after the damage has been done so to speak.

WSJT has no dupe checking of it's own either that I can see.

What are others doing to avoid dupes? Is there something I have missed in the
config of either N1MM or WSJT here?

Running on 80m now but picking out stations I haven’t worked - With only 20 Qs
in the log it’s fairly easy to see who I’ve worked before but is there any way
to get dupe checking somehow?

I’m using a Mac so linking to something like N1MM isn’t possible.

2018-12-01 Thread David Fisher
FWIW, Bill, it’s not particularly obvious that there is a horizontal
association between the Field Day / RTTY Roundup options and the “Exch” fields.
They are pretty far apart horizontally from the options they are associated
with. Lots of mistakes will be made in this configuration.

Hi Edfel,

the upper box is for entering your ARRL Field Day exchange, it is not
relevant to ARRL RTTY Roundup mode. DX in the lower box is correct for
you and other stations not in the 48 contiguous U.S. states, DC, and the
VE provinces.

N1MM doesn’t do it - because the station is not loaded into the main entry

UDP - after the damage has been done so to speak.

WSJT has no dupe checking of it's own either that I can see.

What are others doing to avoid dupes? Is there something I have missed in the
config of either N1MM or WSJT here?

Grant VK5GR

Hi Grant,

currently WSJT-X can only help you with detecting dupes when they call
CQ . To get this working you must move aside your wsjtx_log.adi file
(you will want to put it back after the contest). Then in
"Settings->Colors->Decode Highlighting" enable just the "New call on
band", "My Call in message", "New DXCC on band", "CQ in message", and
"Transmitted message" colours. "LotW User" is optional. Check the
"Settings->General->Show DXCC, grid, and worked-before status" option.

Then work anyone who decodes with a colour highlight other than the
green CQ colour.

Hi Dave,

you cannot turn on RTTY RU mode or FD mode without entering a valid
exchange and if there is an invalid exchange you are thrown back to that
field with a helpful message box.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Any way to get dupe checking in contest mode?

2018-12-01 Thread Grant VK5GR
Bill,

Thanks for that explanation. I realise its fairly early days and ok on the
current limited capabilities in this space.

To make contest mode more viable IMHO it would need to provide dupe feedback on
any callsign I selected at the time of selection for calling (in search and
pounce) or as I clicked to answer someone (at which point it should not start
the answer sequence without some sort of secondary input from the user).

It might also be important to be able to block callsigns from auto answer in
run mode (CQ mode) where you give up on a QSO but they keep trying but not
acknowledging you or simply keep calling without ever progressing. Even if it
is only a temporary "sin bin" of perhaps 15 minutes.

I realise these now aren't bug reports but feature requests for a later
version. However, I feel that some of these fundamentals will be important for
this to be considered by serious contesters.

Regards,
Grant VK5GR

I wonder if it does not like that you have your name in the OPERATOR field
instead of your callsign. AFAIK the ADIF field that this maps to is for
operator call, which CAN be different from the station call under certain

Changing to 7074 getting dozens of decodes per time slot. Clocks are

Tried this on two different Laptop Computers with Win7 and Win10 and

[wsjt-devel] TX not moving on double-clcik

2018-12-01 Thread Jim Shorney

I have noticed a specific scenario that has happened several times during the
contest. This happens when I have called a CQing station two or three times
with no reply and I bail and go call another. Then I see the first station
replying to me with TX3 while I am calling the new one. So I bail on that call
and try to go back to work the first station with a double-click on the
message. This moves the RX back to the first station's frequency, but not the
TX. It is acting like Hold TX is on, but it is not. I tried toggling Hold TX.
and shift-doubleclick, but the TX refuses to move until I use one those
"confusing" arrows. (j/k, I'm not confused - much).

Maybe I'm just a bad op. I know we are supposed to offset our signals and call
split, but that doesn't seem to be happening. At any rate, it seems like the TX
should move in this scenario, otherwise I end up QRMing the second op until I
remember where I am.

While I am at it, it would be nice if, when calling running station, Tx4 could
me made sticky until the final 73 is received. Leave TX disable alone, just let
Tx4 stay selected in case it needs to be re-sent. One less thing to have to
scramble for when things don't go as planned.

Anyway, 70 contacts so far before I needed to take a break.
