[xmail] Migrate mailboxes to different OS?

2005-01-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all. I'm still making a nice happy Fedora Core 3 box. Has anyone here
ever moved mailboxes from a Win32 machine to a *nix machine? I have
several users with mail still in their mailboxes. I'm hoping a copy will
work, but I'd like to see if anyone has any advice before I attempt it.
Create users first? Copy whole user directories?

Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks,
Bryn

[xmail] Challenge/Response System with Xmail

2005-04-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm interested in adding a Challenge/Response system to one of my Xmail
servers -- has anyone done this or is anyone aware of an open source (on
Linux) system that works with Xmail?

Using Google, I can only really find one out there that looks like it
MIGHT work (TMDA), but no one seems to have tried it with Xmail and I
suspect it needs some modification to actually function. I might be
willing to invest a bit of time in the Python code for it to make that
happen, but I'd rather not do this if somone has an existing solution or
a better way to do this.

Thanks!

Hello,

Today, sending a normal email the remote server didn't accept my message:

rbl-plus.mail-abuse.org. Please see

Why I configured Xmail in wrong mode?

What can I do?

I use Xmail 1.18 on linux.

The 80.19.15X.XXX is a different IP from the mail server. This is the

[xmail] How to route outgoing mail to my ISP mail server??

2005-04-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(was HELP...)

Hello again,

I've a problem with my outgoing server due a mail-abuse.org database:

550 5.7.1 Mail from 80.19.154.5 refused by blackhole site
rbl-plus.mail-abuse.org. Please see
http://mail-abuse.org/cgi-bin/lookup?80.19.154.5 for further information.

Some of you suggest me to follow the instructions on the link, but, where they
explain how to do, Xmail is not mentioned. So i ask if someone of you has
encountered the same problem like me.

My internet connection is not a dial up o dinamic. My connection is an ADSL
with static IP! and I use Xmail 1.18 on Fdora Core 2 Linux. Mail-Abuse.org
suggest for Sendmail to route outgoing mail by my ISP mail server:

define(`SMART_HOST',`mail.yourisp.net')dnl <--- Your ISP's mail server name
goes here
MASQUERADE_AS(yourisp.net)dnl <--- Your ISP's domain name goes here
FEATURE(`allmasquerade')dnl
FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')dnl

so, how can I do it with XMAIL??

Thanks to all in advance

Thankyou very very much.

So i note that the biggest italian ISP doesn't support their customers
in this kind of matters. Ok. But how can I do to resolve my problem?? I
don't know if it may concern, but my internet domains are registered
with another ISP than Telecom (interbusiness), and with them i can
access to the DNS table (in fact i set all my mx record to my "ugly"
IP). Can i operate in DNS to resolve this orrible inefficence of Telecom??

[xmail] Re: Receiving Mail multiple times

2007-03-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This used to happen to us quite often. My suspicion was always that the
virus scanner scripts we were using were contributing to the problem. We no
longer see this occuring since we have replaced those scripts. However, we
also upgraded to a newer version of xmail at the same time - so the exact
reason we no longer see this is uncertain.

When we did have to deal with this - the fastest solution for us was to stop
the server, and wipe out the index files, and the entire spool structure,
and allow xmail to recreate them upon restart. This of course only works if
the downsides are not overwhelming to your situation.

Hope this helps -

[xmail] Re: Delivery failure report and passwords in log files

2007-04-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There are several messages that I would like to be able to change. If I got
some of the messages that xmail uses, I would be hard pressed to understand
what the text means. I don't have it in front of me to read verbatim, but
one example is the message that reads "your mailserver has not DNS/MX" - Its
incorrect grammar, and the end users fixate on that as if it really was part
of the problem.

Temporary failures are the worst this way - the xmail message that's
supposed to advise the user that there has been a delay, but that no further
action is needed on their part - ends up just making them call in to ask
what all the messages mean.

So - I agree. We need a way that doesn't include writing a separate filter
for each message we need to make more understandable for the end user. The
messages the way they are now create too many needless support calls.

Tony

The exact same yahoo issue happens to our users very often. The yahoo

Has anyone been successfull in finding all the needed xnet settings for

[XMAIL] External Pop3 Authentication

2001-04-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

We have the following configuration:

Active Directory Server for authentication (W2K SP1)
Member Server for mail and web (W2K SP1)
XMail version 0.69

We want to set up authentication against our AD-server. According to the documentation
of XMail it supports external authentication for pop3. We've tried to get this
working, but until now without results. We're not even sure the script is invoked. To
test this we've created a script called test.vbs. This is a simple vbs-script that
creates a file. When executing this script from the commandline it works.

test.vbs:
set fs = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set afile = fs.CreateTextFile("D:\mailroot\itworks.txt")

In userauth.tab we've created the following entries:

#"userauth" "cscipt.exe" "D:\mailroot\test.vbs"
#"useradd" "cscipt.exe" "D:\mailroot\test.vbs"

We've created a mailuser and can send and receive mail with authentication against
mailusers.tab.
When we uncomment "userauth" the user is still validated, but the script does not work.
When we uncomment "useradd" the user is not validated. When using Outlook Express, a
prompt for username and password appears. It seems the file userauth.tab is seen as
the authentication-file, but since no file is created, we're not sure the script is
executed.

Until we now how and if a script will execute, it's no use developing an external
authentication mechanisme.

Has anyone worked out a way to validate against Windows NT/Windows 2000?

RE: RE: [XMAIL] External Pop3 Authentication

2001-04-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

First I've installed the pre-release of version 0.70. The I created the domain file
instead of using userauth.tab.

D:\mailroot\userauth\pop3\domain.tab:

"userauth" "cscript.exe" "D:\mailroot\test.vbs"

This works. Test.vbs is executed and the file is created.

When I change test.vbs to for example test2.vbs (a non-existing file) authentication
fails.

Now I have a problem with the errorlevel. I've created another test.vbs that looks
like this:

' On Error Resume Next
Err.Raise 51
'WScript.echo Err.Number

This creates an error when executing the script. When I uncomment the first and last
line and I execute the script from the command-line, the errorcode is shown.
However, when this script is used by XMail, authentication DOESN'T fail!

My question is: What does XMail do with the returned errorlevel. Am I missing
something here?

Lex Kneefel

VB: RE: [XMAIL] External Pop3 Authentication

2001-04-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Returncodes from WScript/Cscript are set along with the Quit method as;

JScript;
WScript.Quit (nReturnCode); // 0 (default)

VBS;
WScript.Quit nReturnCode

So telling xmail something has gone wrong would go like;
WScript.Quit (99);
// whereas 99, I think would be the way of telling Xmail the childprocess had an error.

RE: Third Party XMail Applications

2001-04-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all,

just another observation...

We would like to contribute and develop for XMail, because it has good potential.
However, with projects like this it is much better to work with CVS (see for example
http://sourceforge.net for hosting of opensource projects ). This is the only way to
keep track of versions and changes. Else everything we (or others) develop, may not
work anymore when a new version of XMail is introduced.
With CVS you don't have these problems!

Hi All..
Just an observation.

Would it not be a better idea if the Third Party Applications were platform
independent. I see a lot of Windows Applications, and very few Unix based
applications which are not cross-platform. Should we not set a standard for
XMail applications, IE, code in C, Perl... which can be used on both
platforms.

Comments?

XMAIL External Authentication

2001-04-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Posted on: news:microsoft.public.adsi.general

We use an open source mail program (www.xmailserver.org) wich has the
ability to authenticate externally. We want to authenticate against an
Active Directory Server.

We want to download or create a script or opensource program that can
accomplish this.

Requirements:

1. The program has to generate an errorcode of 0 when the user is
authenticated and an errorcode other than zero when authentication fails.
2. The program can be written in for example Visual Basic (no gui),
vbscript, jscript, C or C++
3. It must be an executable script (.exe , .vbs, etc.)
4. The script must execute with at least 2 parameters: username and password
(and domain)
5. Our preferred method would be the WinNT-provider, because with the
LDAP-provider also the container must be defined

We've already tried:

C++==> Q180548 (HOWTO: Validate User Credentials on Microsoft WinNT and
Win95).
We have trouble compiling this code.

vb/vbs==> http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/psdk/adsi/if_core_3uic.htm
Problem with caching of username/password, see also Q218497

Has anybody a working script/program or knows a way to accomplish our goal.

SV: Sample Filter Code for Microsoft Installation.

2001-05-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

hi,

I wrote a simple message filter a while ago that I might wanna have
look at. It doesn't do exactly what you are after, but hopefully it'll bring you some
ideas.
This filter will parse thru all mails coming into specified domain,
comparing headers and body to a list of words and marks it as dead
if found. Kindof a simple virus scanner.

It's written in JScript and requires XMail/WSH (Windows Scripting Host) 1.0+/JScript 5+
installed on Win32 box.
Tested on XMail 0.67.

good luck,
thomas.

Does any one have a sample that I could use.
I want to filter out and RTF tags that are generated by Outlook express.

2003-02-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've got two questions about defaults in Xmail:

* What are the default threads for each of the major processes (POP, SMTP, SMAIL,
etc.)?
(i.e., if I don't specify anything on the command line at startup). Are the number of
default
threads different in Win32 and Linux, or are they same on both platforms? And finally,
what
would be good numbers for a high-volume server?

* I believe the default for the Queue Split Level is 22. What's the benefit of changing
this number to higher or lower values? For instance, in a high-traffic server, would
it be best to have
a high split level of maybe 50?

Thanks for any info :)

At peak times, about 3000. but this happens around once or twice a
week, other times much lower (like 200-500 per hour).

I was also interested in what the defaults are, if I don't actually set
them in the commandline... are they One Thread per process? And does it
differ on Linux vs Win32?

Yes, sorry, of course you're right. 23 it is.

Maximum, I had about 9000 messages of all types (6000 frozen -- this is
a customer list, and it badly needs maintenance; about 2500 in retry,
and the balance normal) this morning.

Typically, I'd guess about 100

[xmail] Re: Thread defaults and spool queue

2003-02-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks :)

btw, for those interested, we've now benchmarked Xmail vs. Post.Office,
Imail, and MDaemon, and have found that it handles loads and scales
better than any of those products.

I have noticed one thing, though, which is not really relevant, but
piqued my curiosity:

The only thing that I've noticed that is "slower" is the initial POP3
banner in other words, Xmail takes considerably longer to bring up
the initial POP3 banner after a connection on Port 110. The actual POP3
session, though, is at least as fast if not faster (we don't have a lot
of POP3 users so I can't benchmark load well for POP3) than other
products.

Any idea why that initial POP3 delay occurs?

Also, I'd appreciate a brief note on the issue of the spool queue number
from an architectural point of view why does it create a structure
like /spool/number/number instead of just partitioning into
/spool/number? I can guess you're creating multiple inner queues, but
why? Is it to allow for multiple threads to process queues
independently?

so I'll say it for you:

[xmail] SMTP Queue Priority

2003-03-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm not sure if you can already do this in Xmail, but here's my situation:

On one of my XMail mail servers, I'm hosting an internal mailing list of around 30,000
customers. They get emailed around twice a month.
When an email is sent to that list, about 30,000 messages are queued for SMTP
transmission. And it takes around 16-20 hours to send all that,
especially since a good portion of these users are in different countries from us and
some over slower links.

During that time, new (regular daily SMTP transactions including internal company SMTP
email) mail is sitting in the queue, behind those
30,000 messages.

So here's my question: is there a way to "prioritize" the queue, such that mailing
list traffic is considered at a lower
priority? Basically, what I'd like to see happen is something like "for every 100 low
priority SMTP messages I send, I send 1 high priority one".
That way, if I send an email that is a non-ML SMTP transaction, then it goes out after
100 ML transactions are processed.

Any ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks!

[xmail] Re: SMTP Queue Priority

2003-03-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yep, basically what I intend to do is simply setup a dedicated mail
server for customer mailings at a subdomain of our main mail domain, and
route traffic that way that'll free up the main normal everyday
domain mail.

Just figured I'd check first, in case there was another way to do it

On that topic, though, do you think you might add some sort of SMTP
queueing in Xmail in the future?

One way that it might work, and possibly be easier to implement, would
be to simply add a tag to all the queued SMTP mail generated by mailing
lists, and put it in a separate queue direcetory, then process X times
the number of SMTP messages in the regular queue for every 1 item in the
ML queue.

Just a thought. it probably would have limited usage out there,
since anyone with that much mail (like us) would probably just dedicate
a server to the bulk-type mail anyway

Thanks again :)

The machine isn't under a high load, i only use this for about 20-30 email

hoging up a ton of CPU and Memory like it was before.

Actually I was going to ask about that my self.

According to the information.
Mailservers are technically required RFC1123 5.2.17

Ok I will look into those issues although I dont get those problems at all on
my dev machine, but someone else said they had the same problem. On my dev
machine and 2 machines at work that I installed it on works the same.
What is your system config?

I also tested the closing problem you described but it exits normaly for me,
I am running XP so maybe it has todo with the OS version. Email what your
system config is.

I agree 100% and I am already working on the sort feature. And yes there will
be statistics!

I have no problem putting all these features in .. I only ask one thing if
everyone interested could please go to my website and register on the forums
and discuss it there.. no sure how long Davide is going to allow it to be
discussed here and would be really great for other users to be able to go and
read about all this stuff if they have questions or problems that have all
ready been discussed.

You dont have to register on the web site just the forums.

Thanks.

2003-07-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This happens to me when I restart the server without stopping xmail. I cant
quite figure out why some messages "get stuck" and resend when the xmail
starts again and others don't get resent.

Ones that "get stuck" get resent every time the xmail is restarted, untill I
manully remove them from the queue.

Strange...

[xmail] XMail 1.17pre3 (FreeBSD)

2003-08-05 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm having issues with setting up filters. For whatever reason it's not
processing them

I added this so that spam assassin would be enabled to everyone.
su-2.05b# cat filters.in.tab

I have the spam assassin filter added into the /var/MailRoot/filters
directory
su-2.05b# pwd
/var/MailRoot/filters

I tested the filter to make sure there wasn't anything missing with perl

usage: ./sa_filter.pl -f -r @@RCPT -t @@TMPFILE

Any suggestions?

[xmail] Re: xscanner

2003-08-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

the version of xscanner that I use uses a "keep" dir under whatever dir the
data filter file is in. So, i create the data file in the users folder
under the domain, with a keep folder right next to the inbox. This way all
the keeps are for that person only.

2003-09-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Edinilson,

The problem was I changed the line

var Use_SA = false;

to

var Use_SA = true;

after I changed it back it works fine now. The Test passed (in according to
your update of the 127.0.0.1)
Does this mean it still works through SA?

[xmail] Re: http://www.atinet.com.br/xmail/ - Filter Errors

2003-09-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Edinilson,

Yes it passed the TEST, and the contentfilter.log recorded some spam
keywords. The test works. However when it comes to live test (sending by
associated email accounts in respect domains) , all spam passed through the
filter and nothing logged.
Users did receive spam.

So, recap here - the command line TEST is working, but the live action
failed.

In your readme.txt it's not clear about the filter.in.tab situation, is it
copying from the mailroot to filter folder or use your one in your zip? I
think I am close to it but there must be something still missed.

Vinny

2003-09-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Edinilson,

I finally get the filter work! I guess it's the whitelist!
'Cause I was using the same domain to do testing spam (duh!), it was whitelisted.

After remove it and restart the xmail service, the filter stops the spam. No mail went
through.

Question for you - when the filter stops the spam mail, the mail is just disappeared,
right? The recipient will not get the mail and neither the spammer? (get a error or
returned mail?) I have my SA installed and tested well, how can I integrate with SA?
I saw you have the use_SA = false; does it mean it's been disabled?

Anyway, thanks, it at least stop spam.

Vinny

[xmail] CF - xmail - Filter Errors

2003-09-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi all,

So here is the problem,
when changed false to true, the TEST failed again, (SA path is correct)

said "...\contentfilter.js(151, 3) Microsoft JScript run
time error: 'undefined' is null or not an object"

which is the spamassasin bat path and command line.

The SA is enabled and tested well on the box, do you have any idea of this?
(when turn SA off, scripts passed)

Anyone who uses W2K Box + SA + CF has same issue?

Thanks!

Vinny

To the list,

Yes the revision works fine now,
after turn the USE_SA = true;

no error returns. the SA is checking the mail too.
I used some other spam messages to test it did return me #SpamAssasin#
score.

Great filter for xmail! Thanks to Edinilson!

Toby was right I was running the script. I am getting output now.
although I do not under stand what this line is telling me as I can't
determine what is missing ??? it show server characters after the word
missing and nothing about where in the script they are coming from..

/var/MailRoot/filters/XM_Fprot_Filter/XM_Fprot_Filter.sh: [: missing `]'

Any ideas?

Well my script executes f-prot antvirus scanner and it returns a code to the
script and the script then uses that to decide what to do with the email
message.

So wouldn't that be considered spawning another process?
How would you tell the script to wait till f-prot finished before continuing?

I think due to only having Perl version 5.6.1 on my system.
Am working on updating that and giving it a try again.

I'm attempting to use the sendmail program that comes with Xmail with

send out an email, and I haven't beenable to figure out a single line way of
doing this that doesn't require me to put a . to end sending the message.

See this is the exact same problem I am having, that I reported here last
