By using the Policy Domain as a retention bucket the TSM Admins are able
to have a better control of what each clients data actually is retained
for. By using the management classes we can only find out on the actual
clients...which we do not always (and in some cases due to the nature of

One of the client admins here installed Windows TSM Client Version 5, Release 2, Level 4.0 on a Win2000 machine.
All is okay for about 5 seconds then the TSM Scheduler service just stops. The client dsmerror.log shows the following message;
UseExternalTimer: Unable to open timer file '\s4l8.',

When TSM mounts a scratch tape the EXPDT field in CA-1 gets updated as PERMANENT and CA-1 will never recognize that tape as a scratch until the EXPDT changes to an expired date. The EXPDT will not change until I delete the stgdelete volumes from the VOLHISTORY file. So if I do a query volhist;
Thanks, I'll check into the physical size/allocation of the file but I do have an automatic script that trims the volhist file weekly. I have to do this in order to get scratch tapes back into the fold. CA-1 will not recognize TSM tapes as scratch until they are deleted from the volhist file.

I do a full DB backup on Saturday morning after daily processing, then an
incremental everyday after until the following Saturday. If we are doing
an upgrade, major change, etc., with our system I will then do a full
volume backup before and after but that is the only time I variate from the

Our client backups and DB backups go to a Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem.
Currently the Devconfig & Volhist files are kept on DASD and are updated
automatically when the TSM DB is updated. We do a full volume backup of
our DASD every evening after our batch production is f
