 As some may recall, we had a little
 informal get-together in January 2010 in Milan, Italy.

 Was thinking we could do the same again this year, perhaps
 in the end of March -- happens to be my birthday :).
 Jean-Louis and I were chatting and he suggested Paris.

 No details finalized yet, but as it would be great to get
 as many of us there as possible I'm posting a save the
 date.

Re: [Trinidad] Future of Apache MyFaces Trinidad for 1.x and 2.x

2011-01-10 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
HEllo Manuel,

Trinidad 1.0.x will have one last release (see current vote result on dev@).
After that there is most likely no new release of Trinidad 1.0.x
(optimized for JSF 1.1)

Trinidad 1.2.x will have a very few releases, basically for maintenance reasons.

Trinidad 2.0.x (for JSF2) is the most 'active' development, and
releases are planed.

Once we (Trinidad's pom file) move to the new nexus/release
infrastructure, releases are
cheap and easy to do. Actually I am currently looking into this.

HTH,
Matthias

So basically JBoss' JavaEE 6 container is not backwards compatible to EE5.

Why are the URLs and elements outdated? Aren't say valid for JavaEE 5 ?

Re: [Trinidad] Roadmap

2011-01-10 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hello Walter,

Trinidad 1.0.x will have one last release (see current vote result on dev@).
After that there is most likely no new release of Trinidad 1.0.x
(optimized for JSF 1.1)

Trinidad 1.2.x will have a very few releases, basically for maintenance reasons.

Trinidad 2.0.x (for JSF2) is the most 'active' development, and
releases are planed.

Once we (Trinidad's pom file) move to the new nexus/release
infrastructure, releases are
cheap and easy to do. Actually I am currently looking into this.

HTH,
Matthias

[Trinidad] Beta release of Trinidad 2.0.0

2011-01-10 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

there were some questions regarding the state of Trinidad 2.0;
We will have a beta1 release within January.

Currently we are voting on the plugins:
http://markmail.org/message/tzkhsmzq3owmy6dp

Once that is done, we can vote on the framework/components.
By end of this week I do expect a vote for Trinidad 2.0-beta1.

Sorry for the delay, please stay tuned.

 With mercurial, I had already some 'strange' things (like directories not
 visible in pre-commit list but still commited, ...) but probably better for
 forking/branching. So no opinion about the technology used.

 we have the choice between svn and mercurial. the advantage of svn is
 that most contributors are familiar with svn.
 however, with mercurial it's easier for contributors to fork
 the repository and to contribute their examples. moreover, it's easier
 to mirror the repository e.g. to bitbucket which offers more features.

 furthermore, it would be nice to have one repository per
 subproject/topic.
 e.g. myfaces-extval-examples, myfaces-codi-examples,
 myfaces-stacks-examples, ..., myfaces-helpline (for easier communication
 on the users-list)
 that would allow a clear separation concerning the wiki and the issue
 tracker.

 - +1 for mercurial and one repository per subproject/topic.

Hi,

this vote was canceled:
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.jakarta.myfaces.devel/46418

However, there was a recent vote on 1.0.13, and almost nobody did
bother to vote.

Afterwards we discussed what's happening with Trinidad 1.0.x and decided that
there will be re-vote which is the LAST release of Trinidad 1.0.x

Trinidad 1.2. and 2.0. still owe the community another release, yes.

 idea (for which I also lobbied initial budget approval) of setting up
 an extra on-demand slave on EC2 for handling load peaks has mostly
 gone away.

 So the question is, should I still look at setting up an EC2 slave?
 Beyond load balancing, the other reason for running builds in the
 cloud is the availability of a wider variety of build environments.
 Basically we could provision an on-demand build slave for any
 environment for which an AMI exists or can be created. I don't have a
 pressing need for that from the projects I work with, but perhaps
 others are interested?

Codi - generating viewconfig impls?

2010-11-26 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,
would it make sense to generate viewconfig impl classes, based on the
available XHTML files?
Would help to reduce some boilerplate code...

If XHTML file is named foo_bar.xhml, the generated java file could look like

@Page(
  name=foo_bar
)
public final class FooBar implements ViewConfig
{
}

for an XHTML page like fooBar.xhtml the generated code would look like:
@Page
public final class FooBar implements ViewConfig
{
}

Of course, once the developer added the @PageBean the 'regeneration'
should be able to catch that in order 'reinject' any @PageBean

What do you think ?

Looks like the Trinidad community failed to get a proper release out.
It's because nobody here cares about JSF 1.1 that much, which makes sense.

But a few users are _still_ on that JSF version, hence I wanted to get
a new maintenance release out.

What should we do with Trinidad 1.0.x ?

* start a new vote and declare that 1.0.13 will be the last release ?
* don't even bother in releasing Trinidad 1.0.13 ?

Git at apache (was: Re: [DISCUSS] git mirror for webapptest)

2010-11-24 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

hijacking this, b/c of git.

During ApacheCon there were some activities regarding (full) git at Apache.
Let me see how far that is, right now... :)

 Hi guys,

 There were some voices on twitter requesting a git mirror for the new
 webapptest project. Generally I'd really like to have a git mirror for
 it, because it makes contributing a lot easier.

 However, the project is still in the GSoC folder. Thus I think we
 should first move it into a more adequate folder before requesting the
 git mirror from the infrastructure team. WDYT?

 It's because nobody here cares about JSF 1.1 that much, which makes sense.

 But a few users are _still_ on that JSF version, hence I wanted to get
 a new maintenance release out.

 What should we do with Trinidad 1.0.x ?

 * start a new vote and declare that 1.0.13 will be the last release ?
 * don't even bother in releasing Trinidad 1.0.13 ?

Hi Mark,

the vote is closed. In the past we agreed that for 1.0.x we will have
a very few releases,
just a few maintenance releases.

I did an overhaul on the pom files, to test the new Apache
infrastructure for releases, so
this was a perfect test candiate for that, but looks like the Trinidad
community failed in getting
a release out. Perhaps it's time to declare Trinidad 1.0.x official as
no longer in maintenance mode?
Let me raise that question on dev@

2010-11-10 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Yes, sound good!
myfaces 2.0.2 has fixed that - perhaps some different plugin version
has been used, there.
(is there any known issue regarding the generated POMs ?)

@Bernd's missing licenses:
- let fix em in trunk and ensure the next release covers that
IMO this is minor, since test/demo code...

So, please update the SRC and we are fine.

[Trinidad Release] 1.0.13 is on the vote

2010-11-10 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

last week I did some changes to our POM files. We are now on the
latest Apache stuff. This means releases are way more easier (since
we do have better tool support).

As a 'test' I (re)started a vote for Trinidad 1.0.13 on the dev@ list ([1]).

Greetings,
Matthias

 Hi,

 We were running the needed tasks to get the 1st release of Apache MyFaces
 Extensions CDI (aka MyFaces CODI) out.
 The artifacts are deployed to Nexus [1] (and [2]).

 The release contains the following modules:

  - CODI Core
  - CODI JSF Module (for 1.2 and 2.0)
  - CODI JPA Module
  - CODI BV Module
  - CODI I18N-Message Module
  - CODI Scripting Module
  - CODI Distribution Modules

 Please take a look at the 0.9.0 artifacts and vote!

 Please note:
 This vote is majority approval with a minimum of three +1 votes (see
 [3]).

 [ ] +1 for community members who have reviewed the bits

 [ ] +0
 [ ] -1 for fatal flaws that should cause these bits not to be released,

 This is the result of the api checks for backwards compatibility. The
 trinidad-api/src/test/clirr/clirr-runner.txt file acts as a golden file
 for allowed api changes. If your test fails, the target directory will
 contain the clirr-runner.txt file of all of the api changes found. You
 can then diff the two files and add any api changes that should be
 allowed to the golden file.

 Unfortunately, based on the signatures present in the clirr-runner.txt,
 it looks like clirr is detecting any change, including changes that
 would not affect backwards compatibility, making the feature kind of a
pain.

[maven] myfaces pom

2010-11-05 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

the ASF master-pom does contain a _regular_ snapshot repo (linked to
the (new) nexus repo), see:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/maven/pom/trunk/asf/pom.xml

*snip*
repository
  idapache.snapshots/id
  nameApache Snapshot Repository/name
  urlhttp://repository.apache.org/snapshots/url
  releases
enabledfalse/enabled
  /releases
/repository
*snip*

However, it doesn't define the apache.snapshot for plugins. Nor does
the myfaces pom.
Does one know why?

In Trinidad we currently have this setting:
  pluginRepositories
pluginRepository
  idapache.snapshots/id
  nameApache Snapshot Repository/name
  urlhttp://repository.apache.org/snapshots/url
  releases
enabledfalse/enabled
  /releases
/pluginRepository
  /pluginRepositories

IMO it could be centralized: In myfaces-pom or in the ASF pom.

Thoughts?

[Trinidad BUILD] Can we update the portlet-bridge version ?

2010-11-05 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

the TRUNK has this dependency
portlet-bridge.version1.0.0-beta/portlet-bridge.version

which causes some *problems* when you delete your entire REPO.

Why?
It's OLD portlet-bridge-master-pom-2 has:
a) overridden the repositories section ([1])
b) dependency to myfaces-6 (Trinidad has against 9)

in a) there is the WORST ever repo:
urlhttps://maven-repository.dev.java.net/nonav/repository/url

what's wrong with that REPO?
Well it has been removed. and it issues redirects via HTML...
Yes, I really don't know why...

Hence... for portlet-bridge-master-pom-2 MAVEN had to download
myfaces-6, but the repo is gone (g)
... and the maven tool is not a human, so it really can't read this HTML:
...
The document has moved a
href=http://download.java.net/maven/1/org.apache.myfaces/poms/myfaces-6.pom;here/a.
...

So it (maven) ended up downloading a HTML file

It took a good amount of time to realize the above dilemma..

Quick fix: manually downloaded myfaces-6. This made the build running,
but yes the problem is really the 'relocation'
of that mentioned repo.

Therefore... we should update the TRINIDAD TRUNK to use a newer
version than: portlet-bridge.version (1.0.0-beta).
Since the master poms have been touched and updated the bogus
(relocated) repo to it's real, new URL.

Scott, can you update the version ?

Agreed - said that later on, too

  Why does myfaces need a snapshot plugin?

core (the jsf impl) does not need it. A subproject's trunk (trinidad)
is having dependency against some (specialized) maven plugins
(trinidad-maven).
These plugins are deployed to the nexus repo, hence we have that in
our (trinidad) pom.xml

First it sound a good idea.
No, it's not - There is no need for having that setting in myfaces/asf pom.

 I'd recommend putting the plugin repo entry near the use of the plugin so it
can be removed easily when the plugin is released.  I'd include a comment on
why its
 needed too.

yep

[Trinidad] Nightly Builds are back for 1.0.x, 1.2.x and 2.0.x

2010-11-05 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

today I did some maven/pom clean up and hudson server related work.
As part of that the nightly builds for all 'supported' Trinidad
versions are back:

See here for example:

https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/snapshots/org/apache/myfaces/trinidad/trinidad-api/

Next (as I did a bit of the clean up already) is doing releases for
them - most likely end of the month...

Greetings,
Matthias

[Enforcer] trunk pom is linked against a wrong maven-parent

2010-11-05 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

I noticed that our (MyFaces) hudson fails to build some of our
subprojects, like:
https://hudson.apache.org/hudson/job/MyFaces-Trinidad-2.0.x/31/consoleText

While tracing down the issue, I think there is a problem with the
maven-parent used inside
of the 1.1-SNAPSHOT (trunk) of the enforcer module.

I filed a bug for this:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MNG-4888

Greetings,
Matthias

[Committers] Reminder: License Headers

Hi guys,

just a reminder... Please make sure that all files (XML, Java,
scripts, etc) do require a proper license header.
There is a tool ([1]) that can be used during the build, so that we do
get a nice report, like [2],[3].

 Hi Thomas,

 What you have encountered here is a known design problem of JSF 2.0.
 Currently we (the MyFaces team) are working hard to get all of this
 fixed for the JSF 2.1 specification, because - as you know - this
 stuff is really annoying and makes composite components unusable in
 the most scenarios.

 Sorry, but that is all we can do right now. Fortunately the JSF 2.1
 spec release will be very soon!

 Regards,
 Jakob

 2010/11/3 Thomas Möller thomas.moel...@continentale.de:

 Finally it seems to me that the targets-feature is only sufficient for
the
 simplest scenarios. There are too many restrictions:

 1) only for a restricted set of attribute names: action,
actionListener,
 validator, valueChangeListener
 2) not supported in nested attributes

 So, what is the solution in my scenario (I thought it was simple enough):
a
 composite component that consists of a panel with two buttons and
*optional*
 actions and actionListeners. I want to use it in the following way:

 either 1)

 my:twoButtons action1=... actionListener1=... action2=...
 actionListener2=... /

 or 2)

 my:twoButtons2 button1=... button2=... / relying on a button model:

 public interface Button
 {
  String action();
  void actionListener(ActionEvent e);
 }

 I tried to solve this problem without tricks like writing own tag
handlers
 or modifying the facelets view declaration language.

 I'd really like to get an answer for this... ;-)
