The best way to test this is with a full-scale sine wave from the SB2.
Very small amounts of clipping are audible on a clean sine input,
whereas with music it is only obvious in the loud parts.
In recent firmware revs there is a 1102.5 Hz sine test built in to

Thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me. I'll
tinker with my receiver and the SB2 and see if I can find the right
combo.
I suppose sometimes it's not as complicated as science, sometimes it
just comes down to what sounds good!

It depends. How good are your ears? how good is your system?
VBR is nearly always better than CBR.

Call me intrigued. I'm wondering how these (and generally speaking,
non-oversampling DACs) behave when hooked up to the SB2.

I completely agree with what both Pat and Sean wrote.
So I have very little to add except that MP3-encoders can make a hugh
difference in the quality of your Mp3. Obviously settings within those
encoders can make a big difference as well.
If you are going the Mp3 route, I'd seriously consider e

Thanks for the links. I can't imagine modding one of these myself, but
then again I can't imagine paying $265 for what was once a $30 piece of

Im Mac-ignorant, so I cant advise on a mac to flac tool chain. There
has to be something out there, certainly something that can rip and
encode a cd in significantly less than 30 minutes. You might want to
search over at the hyrdogenaudio.org forums.
At the risk of offending mac sensibilities

While there is lots of badly engineered CDs at 16/44.1 it does not have
to sound bad.

That's what I have in my bedroom, the t-amp driving a pair of in-wall B&Ws. Scroll halfway down this page and you can see it..The t-amp sounds pretty good. The low end lacks a bit of course, but mid/high sounds pretty good. I played a bit with it driving my Mission speakers (753 i think, floorstand

I take it from your original post that you are using the volume control
in your receiver, and not the SB? You might take a look at this thread:

Thanks for the feedback. Let me see if I'm understanding correctly.
(I'm only too lazy to TRY and learn..when it's happening accidentally,
I actually enjoy it).

^^^ Right, I gather that's what makes this a nice (integrated) amp - It
has no tone knobs, no balance, nothing -- just a volume knob and input
selectors.

Yes, we can tend to forget that anything in the signal path, however
esoteric and expensive, degrades the signal. I sometimes feel that we

Does your A3.2 have the ability to connect direct into the power amp
side, bypassing the preamp? If so, I recommend you try feeding the SB2
analogue outputs direct into the power amp and use the SB2 volume
control. Even the best preamps will slightly degrade the signal, and in

I'll add my tuppenceworth to the good advice already posted. I'd
consider a modest spend on a bigger hard drive and FLAC encoding to be
a wiser investment than $1000 on a DAC, particularly if buying the DAC
means sticking with lossy compression. It's entirely possible that

This is a question not so much about the Squeezebox itself, but you all
seem to be a knowledgeable lot about audio systems in general, so I

Well said Pat. I spend a reasonable amount of money on equipment with
the sole objective of making the music I listen to sound as good and
enjoyable as possible. I suspect though, that I'll always spend more
money on the music than the equipment as the that is what it's all
about. I too have found
I too would be interested in knowing what the optimal level is for going
into my amp (Musical Fidelity A3.2). The SB2 definitely puts out a hot
signal at 40; that just can't be optimal.
