Electrocompagniet, Primare, Krell, Mark Levinson, Cerwin-Vega, NAD,
Cambridge, Lyngdorf all offer integrated with XLR inputs... they're not
difficult to find ;) Especially since XLR seems to
Obviously I had not looked very hard! Was mainly looking at what hifi
charts and seeing if it mentioned balanced, and only power amps had a
dedicated entry so I came to an assumption. Any recommendations? What
might be the top five to look at off the top of your head.

Its impossible to say, especially since you provide no contextual
information. All brands I listed (except the CW and maybe even the
Lyngdorf) are good and highly regarded. Also the list
The only system I have listened to is Arcam CD player and integrated
amp. To be honest I am no qualified audiophile, I can distinguish
tinny music with lack of depth from a higher quality set.. but that is
about my range. Budget would be under $2k for the amp, and I imagine

I get the impression that you're aiming for a minimalist system and the

you should consider just getting a power amp with balanced inputs.
More minimal would be TP direct to powered speakers.

Interesting, I assumed I would need an integrated amp as a power amp

Well the speakers I'm looking at would not be powered afaik, (The CM7
perhaps) and yes I do not even really know what a pre amp is for
really...

a shortlist of products and going to a dealer that might stock a few,

All the video equipment will be in another room, thankfully that lot all
goes into one simple receiver ;)
I think I understand better now, I was not even aware of powered

preferred solution. And I suppose I could even have
You are probably using powered speakers with your computer.
ATC, PMC, BO, Dynaudio, Audiostatic, Martin Logan etc all make powered
speakers.
What is overlooked many times is the quality of the preamp, its much
more important than the poweramp, but since preamp dont have watts

In the olden days, a Preamp was mostly a before amp that raised the
phonograph input level up to the same as other sources (tape, tuner,
etc.). It literally amplified the turntable input.
Then and now, the secondary functions of a preamp are:

Not really, altho people who sell amps and interconnects and speaker
wires will not complain.
Meridian has been selling

My Classe integrated amp has balanced input. There are some. There are
companies that make all of their amps be balanced.
