to set bbdb-completion-type to 'primary-or-name to stop
BBDB completing with some random alternative email address, and now I
have to type (much) more before I can use completion (typically
firstname dot and then at least the first character of the surname,
sometimes two).

What's that stuff at the end ? Are text properties get
default area code.
If I had time I'd rip out all the phone number parsing stuff (does it
actually do anything useful ?) and just replace it all with opaque
strings. In fact given the number of US phone numbers I've seen that
use letters instead of n
portable solution. Trying to keep up with
every country's rules for displaying postcodes and phone numbers is
probably an impossible task

There's supposed to be a patched version of SyncAB that understands
BBDB, but the links to it point to a site that no longer seems to
exist :-(
