I think that you should look into getting a ZIP drive.  Zip drives come with a boot utility to load drivers at the DOS prompt.  That said, you can definitely assign a drive letter to a CDRW using the driver and the MSCDEX command, but I'm not sure how it's done and I'm sure it's not fun. - Matt Sm

Ummm...  what kind of OS are you trying to extract from?  I'm pretty sure that a win98 disk will not mount an NTFS hard drive.  You're going to have to find an NTFS boot disk.  I think that you can use those 4 disk that win2k comes on and boot into the recovery console in order to access the volume
