Ken,
Check your grounds. Had a similar problem when I put mine together. Make sure
that there is no paint where the dash harness connects to the dash frame and
also make sure that the dash frame is fee of paint where it mounts to the body.
If your not sure, try jumping the harness ground to
I ran into simular problems when I replaced my wiring harness. Trouble
turned out to be a bent tab on the ignition switch connector (the one on top
on the column under the dash). A tab was pushed up (or down) and not making
connection. Caused wired stuff.. Unless you can see physical
What is your definition of short out . Off the top of my head,
those items are not on one fused circuit. I'd recheck for correct
connections behind the dash and look for wires that are crushed between say
the dash panel frame. If more than 1 fuse blows, I'd replace one at a
time see
Ken- If you’re thinking replacement, I can give you my experiences. I
bought a kit from Painless, that was very involved to install. My original
dash wiring had been “worked on” by every monkey with a pair of pliers since
it was new. I went with the Painless kit because I have full aftermarket
It has a long bolt in the center, look closer and you should be able to find it. good luck Eddie 66ss conv.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:How does the wiring harness disconnect at the fire wall. does it just simply unplug or is there a latch or something holding it in. i've tried to unplug it but it
If it is a 70 there should be a bolt right in the middle of the plug.
Once that is loosened (I don't recall if it comes all the way out or
if it is captured) Then you can unplug the harness. You may have to
wiggle and pull a bit, cause sometimes they get a bit cooked under
there and nearly

Hi Larry,
First question, is the intermediate cable for a 66 the same as a 65?
(I've got an extra one of those)
Second, how did it go with the grille rivets? Did you liked them? Where
did you get them?

Apparently, nobody makes or carries

Larry. I don't instantly remember where but I have
seen those for sale. Anyway, I have one from a 67 somewhere in my attic. You are
welcome to it.

Safest thing is to call M H, they will know exactly what it is for. I had a number
of wires that I didn't need when I replaced my harness, but most were for emission
control relays that I didn't need anymore.

Check your voltage regulator to see if a wire is
missing. There should be a brown wire on one of the terminals for the gen
warning light in the dash.

Not knocking the mfg, but with all the accolades MH seem to get, don't they
provide a diagram?

I asked one time and they said their were too many variations and too many pages for
each harness. They have them layered in a CAD system that didn't lend itself to one

Sorry, I still can't buy it and sounds like a copout. Even if they don't
know what combination it's going into the fact that they include all (I
assume) necessary wires to accommodate variations, their should be
instructions. If a wire isn't needed, say a tach wire or some relay wire,
it should

Well, maybe. I don't think it is cheaper if they have to spend 30 to 60 minutes on
the phone working through questions and tracing wires while you are both on the phone,
which they have done with me 3 times.
I also know that they are real picky about producing only factory exact harnesses.
I would
recommend MH (wiringharness.com).

Rusty,
The Painless kits are good for hot rods and custom applications, but don't come with most of the sockets, connectors, etc.
We sell the Painless kits, but we alsocarry wiring harnesses made by MH. We've found them to be the best quality, most-accurate reproduction wiring harnesses out
