That's incorrect. Here is important tax-related information surrounding
this situation:
1) As long as anyone gives Paul a gift of less than $10,000, then they (the
giver) does not have to file a gift return.
2) Anyone that gives Paul a gift cannot take a tax deduction for the
contribution

I want to thank everyone for offering to contribute. For now, we are ok

Greg,
You point is well taken. I don't know for sure if Paul runs groupstudy like
a business or if it's something he does personally. I assumed (evil, I
know) that Paul ran this as an individual. Having said that, I bounced this
off of my wife (the CPA, hehe) and although she mentioned that
If we wanted to contribute a few dollars to the cause, what would be the
right mechanism to do that? With as many people as live on this list, it
seems like voluntary contributions could help defray the cost of an upgrade

Paul,
Is there some mechanism by which we could donate money toward the
purchase of new equipment? I can see that may cause more headaches than
it's worth but I thought I'd ask. I think if a lot of the people who

some
Yeah, we can all use Paypal

Please provide me with your address, and I will send you a contribution in
form of a check towards better equipment. Your list has helped me to get

Count me in.
I've benefitted from this list for quite some time on Paul's dime.
It's long overdue that I kicked in a quarter or two!

FAQ,
If monetary contribution would cause you more problem than otherwise,
perhaps some members from the group can sell you their companies' surplus
server for a dollar. It would be a totally legitimate business transaction.

Paul,
For the past few months, I have taken advantage of the extremely valuable

sure, I'll send Paul some money via PayPal ;-)
actually, I'd have no problem sending money from my PayPal account into a

Paul, why don't you let us know what or how much is required, then
people who are feeling generous could sponsor parts, perhaps even buy
them through ebay etc and get them shipped to you.
