Advantage? Other then the fact it can be used to "patch together"
two networks in a bind, none. It can be considered harmful for
performance. Imagine:
Router: 10.0.0.1/24, and 172.16.0.1/24 secondary
Host A: 10.0.

Is it possible

On our router the serial sub-interface is configured as follows:
Serial0.16 is up, line protocol is up
Internet address is 66.109.100.10/30
If I want to add a secondary ip to the interface
(config-subif)#ip address 66.109.100.8 255.255.255.252 secondary
I get this error
Bad mask /30 for addr
its my understanding that
it is possible, but only if the primary ip is also included in the ospf
process.

As far as I know if OSPF is running on the primary address then yes it is
possible to run OSPF on a secondary address.
However the secondary network doesn't get Hello packets from the OSPF
protocol. No neighbor adjacency is possible.

Kevin,
Thanks for your valuable information. I need to ask you that what IOS
version you moved to? Considering c26xx and c36xx running DLSW, ISDN and
OSPF what would be the best version?

Reading Cisco's documentation, I thought the router uses the primary ip

this problem...

Hi Anil,
There appears to be a conflict here.
Is it Secondary addresses ( ie: 2 ip addresses on the same physical port) or
subinterfaces.
If you need secondary addressing use something like this
conf t
int fas0/0
ip address 10.128.10.1 255.255.255.0
ip address 172.16.16.1 255.255.255.0 secondar
You don't put an Ip address on the e0 interface just on e0.1 etc. This is
beacuse the main interface will overwrite the sub interface config.
Therefore the router is having problems. If you want to use secondary
addresses on the main interface then you can configure an Ip address on e0
and then yo

I have done what you just mentioned(everything works except DHCP), the range
that needs to be pass out is the new range which is related to the new ip
secondary address. The user in Hub site(current
flip-flop your primary and secondary addresses on the hub router:
interface Ethernet0
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 secondary
ip address 192.168.13.1 255.255.255.0
ip helper-address 192.168.12.17
This will let the old 192.168.1.x addresses age-out gracefully while
assigning new
Plus, upon re-reading your post, I don't see an IP helper setup on the eth0
interface on the spoke router just like you have on the hub router. You
need to add that.
The point of my previous post was to highlight the fact that you need to
make sure that the primary IP on the eth0 on the spoke ro
r the secondary.
No match=No address.

Just a clarification. It is possible to have multiple subnets on
an interface and configure the DHCP server to assign IPs to any of
these scopes. No router address flip-flopping or other machinations are
required or needed.
As has been posted, the primary IP address on the interface is *usually
