Somehere else they showed a WS-X5224 card as being the one doing the etherchannel. My
understanding is that WS-X5224 cards do not support etherchannel.

It is my experience that tells me if your interfaces are down you do not have a link.
This may be due to either the wrong type of cable being used. Ie a Xover instead of a
straight through.
Another one that will stop your switch from talking to your router (that is no link)
