So, in my estimation, it looks to be that clamdscan is not using the latest
database release when qmail-scanner is invoked.
Anyone have an idea on this? If you need to see snippets of log files just
let me know what you need.

I have installed qmail on RH9 from source, I have not changed any of the

exploitable code, and more secure in general.
My guess is you're using Micro$oft. Maybe time would be better spent
convincing them to fix their code. See if they are as responsive as the
Clam team. :)

about rar and licensing issues, and as such at least some of them are not

with regards to Clam. However, if in so doing I'd be exposing my customers
to viruses that would otherwise be caught using the newer version, I'd
reconsider that policy.

Allow me to preface this by saying I have never used Dansguardian, and up
until now have heard only good things about it.
Having said that, I'm using squid and squidguard here. Combination works
like a champ. And without the contradictions. :)
