the particulars of this package for my sailboat? Also, Fred you want a shot at

Just got the same thing from Defender last year. It was a foggy cruise to
new Brunswick and the package worked very well. I especially liked the fact
that I could get everything on my ipad while at the nav table or in my
bunk.
Bottom line is that it's pretty good stuff and easy to operate.

I just went down to Penniless and looked at the blower system – it is about 70
degrees here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland – Merry Christmas…..
We have 3 inch flex hose from the dorades to the engine area. One has a blower

Joel,
I am looking at OpenCPN for another reason, but it exports a .gpx file and I
don't know what that is or what accepts it as an input.
Fred,
What do you think of Raymarine RayTec RNS Navigation Software?

Joel,
.gpx are the most widely supported files used by various GPS s/w. They are text
files, so they are almost human readable, as well. Garmin s/w (MapSource,
BaseCamp) can import and export those (e.g. for route planning or waypoints (or
for track recording)). Other vendors support that f
When my boat was pulled from the water this year I was surprised to find that
the Max-prop zinc was gone, one of the shaft zincs was gone and the other was
nearly gone. I have had this configuration in past years and every other year
at the end of the season I could barely justify replacing the
Hello,
A number of years ago I had an 1986 O'day with about 20 years or hard, foul,
bottom paint buildup. Large sections of bottom paint would fall off. The
keel looked terrible. Over the winter I decided to redo the bottom.
I tried sanding, chemicals, and scrapping the old paint. Scraping worke
Since I just finished reading Nigel Calder's chapter on corrosion, I'll
take a crack at this.
Just speculating here, but do you have any other anodic metals that could
have been acting as anodes instead of your zincs before? Ex, if you had
the prop painted with zinc chromate, I believe that could
Hi David,
Normally zinc decay over the course of a year is attributed to
galvanic corrosion, whereas stray current corrosion can happen
rapidly and be very destructive. A change in Galvanic decay is
usually associated with a change in underwater metals (new prop
maybe) or area salinity.
Ha
Since this subject comes up periodically, I wanted to report back on my
experience with getting the bottom of the boat stripped recently. I decided to
go with a company that did dustless sandblasting as their quote was about $600
less than the other option which was walnut shell blasting. Thos
I forgot to mention one thing that might be related to the zinc problem.
Mid-season, I hit a rock while racing. When the boat was pulled, the lead was
exposed in an area of about 10 square inches. Could that cause zinc corrosion?
I can see that could create current to the keel bolts, but how
by chance did you buy current used up zincs from different place than
previously? have found different zinc makers zincs... deteriorate at

Hi David,
Lead is more noble than zinc (and slightly less noble than your prop
& shaft). So, yes. A change in noble metal (increased lead surface
exposure) by that amount can contribute to an increased loss of zinc.
We hope it's that simple.

I have been buying from Boatzincs.com for many years and always order the same
thing, so unless they have changed their supplier, the zincs should be the
same. Dave

You mean, there's a reason for using Open CPN other than "Being the

I can match that through the end of the year (barely). It’s a hell of a price.
Keep in mind that if you’re going to mast-mount the dome, you’ll need the
mount, as well as a 10-meter radar extension cable; those will total about
$400.00 additional.
Also, I just got an email from Raymarine abou
Allen — I have to admit to having absolutely NO experience with the Raytec RNS
software. It’s Windoze only, and I’m a Mac guy. There are so many planning
software tools out there, both free and not, that it’s about impossible to keep
track any more. But OpenCPN gets a lot of good press.

New Year bring joy, fair winds and smooth seas.
80+ F here today. Just can't wrap my mind around that. Lake forecast
showing 9-10 knots. Sounds like a good sailing day here in south Louisiana.

After spending many years celebrating a white Christmas, it is unusual for us
to see green grass, flowers in bloom and the temperatures averaging 75-80F.
Sitting by the pool on Christmas Eve, drinking our egg nog on the deck is
something we have never experienced. But I am sure we will endure.
Um, thanks for all that Stu - but we're running around here by Lake Erie with
no coats too! It's gorgeous! You didn't have to go all the way down there

Yes there is. The US Power Squadron dropped CAPN for OpenCPN in their Senior
Navigator Course. I was partially completed in the course when my cataracts
worsened and made fine work difficult. I suspended course work until I was
able to get Lasik surgery on both eyes.
Now I have the option
Any changes to the salinity of the water where the boat is kept? You said
you get them from boatzincs.com. Are you absolutely sure that you didn't
accidentally change between martz and camp or between aluminum, zinc, and
magnesium? Did you make any changes to the bonding/ground system in the

This weather IS crazy. It was 17C (around 60F), just double the previous
record. The wind was big and nasty, too. 35-40 kt, supposedly up to 55 kt
gusts. But blue sky. So even if the boat was in, I don't think there would be
much sailing.
Happy Holidays

We had 33 knots from the south with a nice square 7 foot chop on the nose and a
beautiful 33 Degrees F. It was a freezy roller coaster.
