I started in college 1979 and they changed to SSNs a couple of years later.
I would hope they have changed back since then. I knew it was a bad idea
then.
VA has changed drivers license numbers to it's own number. I had a clinic
ask for my SSN last week.

Even the US government has not stopped it's use for this.

I agree it has become an ID number. I always have laughed, though,
because when I was younger the Social Security card used to state on it
that it was NOT to be used as an ID.

Well, a little nitpicky, but not so much ID card as ID number. I've -never-
been asked to provide the actual card as an ID. (I lost mine decades ago and
have never bothered to replace it--have
never needed it.)
Recently for Military service and other things we have been asked for
the actual SS card, not a copy or a duplicate.
If you were to change jobs they might ask for the original SS card.
I know we get hung up on the number but the SS administration will
tell you it is an official US document.
In a digital society, where the SS card is now mandatory at birth...id card
and id number still have the same effect as a national id.

You (all) are referring to things that derived from Real ID efforts
from the GWB administration for drivers' licenses - supposedly an old
dog-eared piece of paper, like a SSN card proves who you are because
they government ID documents.
In reality, all these new databases springing up with SSN
SS#s for Bank accounts have been around much longer.
The Drivers License bit was in 2003 when I moved from TN to AL.

The driver's license for opening bank accounts is required by the USA PATRIOT
Act, which was cleverly named so as to make opposing it appear treasonous.

was finding enough Molson's, eh?

Um, you are legally required to carry a dl while driving.
Also, why would showing your license be any different then letting them keep
