Seems the ppp stuff isn't set up. Sooner or later somebody has to
fix this. Have to modprobe the ppp_generic, ppp_async, and ppp_deflate
modules. Shouldn't these be there if a dial-up connection was set up
during install?

I ran across a similar problem with 6.1. Instead of fighting with it as
a kernal compiled option, I just used the module. If you put the
command to load the module in rc.local, ppp will always be available.
This solution isn't the best, as far as I am concerned, but it works.

get an error mesage with the -9 kernel in a pop-up with kppp although I am

I was able to work around this by doing two things:
1. Deactivate any other interfaces that have a default route configured.
In my case a local ethernet lan, thus do "ifdown eth0"
2. Uncheck the option in PPP to add a default route after connection is

I have been having some problems with the kernel and the default ppp
scripts they do not work they are looking for /usr/bin/wvdial wich dose
not exist. not to mention by default there is aliases in
/etc/conf.modules for the 2.3.X kernels for using there modules for ppp,
even if you do not install
