Yep. Softsqueeze(linux) ran around 0.75 seconds behind my squeezebox1.
However this was with the output of my soundcard routed via an FM
modulator to my FM radio in the room

transition, in practice I've never actually experienced it like that...
I have things set so that when the first song drops below a certain
level *for the last time* (my current configuration on winamp is -10db,
but I've often used -2

For those that are having speed issues, you may look into the following
items, they may be causing you the problems.
1) Memory, if you have less than 1gb of memory then you may be
suffering from the lack of available memory. Example; if you 512 mb
memory and you have various other tasks/programs

I think the main problem is using the "Browse Music Folder" interface. That's going to be slower than Browse Artists/Albums. If I understand correctly, BMF reads from the disk, and Browse Artists/Albums reads from the DB -- which you can keep in memory for faster access.

192mb Ram. It's a dedicated laptop with a very minimal installation of
Windows XP SP2 (lots of services turned off etc). I have over 10,000

of these play audio on their own, if that is what
you were asking. Their function is to communicate
with SlimServer via CLI (command-line interface).
They are alternatives to the SlimServer web page
interface at yourslimserverIP:9000.

Do your firewall logs report anything amiss? Not
sure about software players, but the Squeezebox

My DLINK router/FW/ADSL-thingie allows me to port forward only, not
differentiate between server and access. And on the computer there's
Win XP2 FW only. I think I'll follow your advice and open up

This sounds like a permissions problem, I would guess your music is in
your user area and this is not accessible when you are logged into your
wife's account because your wife cannot access your area.
Check the activity monitor and see if the perl process is owned by your

You might want to try coming to this from a different direction.
The problem you're encountering is a file lock on the db file when the
backup runs.
If you were to switch to using MySQL then you could either use the
database backup features available in the database, or even run
scheduled tasks
BTW you might want to put SlimServer in the
Windows XP firewall exceptions list as well. See

I'm using iTunes and ssh to remote stream 320kbps mp3 files to a laptop.
In general, it works - however, peridically iTunes will pop up a dialog
box that states "Network Stalled" - Rebuffering Stream. Then playback

I like the MrC one and I think Photoshop is probably a better workbench
than my kludge of 3 programs. However, since I have now done the
