We have an opportunity to buy a quantity of UV3 knobs, but there is a minimum
buy from the supplier. If there is enough interest, we can get them for around
$24 plus postage for a set of 8. Any interest?

A simple question (as if there really are any) about the Keying circuit of an
L4B. Because I use several radios to drive the L4B I have a relay connected to
the amplifier keying circuit that really only grounds the leads, that has now
failed to work. I looked at the schematic and it appears
John -
The relay circuit in the L-4B is a very simple half-wave supply on a
dedicated winding of the filament transformer. The you should measure
~30 VDC from one pin to chassis, the 'other' pin is grounded. The
reference about 'reversing the pins' is because some transmitters have
one relay
Don, Paul -
Agreed! IF you have 'new' tubes, there is nothing wrong with replacing
an existing tube, readjusting the appropriate alignment, and seeing if
the 'new' tube is better! If it IS better, decide if it's enough better
to warrant the change, and put the 'other' tube in the spares
John,
For the VOX connector/circuit to work, the ALC pot switch must be in the out
position.
How much voltage is on the pins is based upon whether it is a stock linear or
if it has had one of the circuit boards added to allow it to be compatible with
solid state rigs. The voltage on the
Guys come on, notice I've been operating the amp for a while with multiple
rigs.. Clearly that's not the problem, I'm suspecting a diode.. But we'll see.

Evan brought up a good point. MY information was regarding an
unmodified L-4B. Quite likely an open diode.
But there are a lot of amps that have been modified to work with the
wimpy relay or transistor VOX switches in newer rigs.
And I doubt you'd be the first guy to bump the ALC knob in
Here's an interesting find - well, to me, anyway: #2052 does not have a
little red button on the main dial so that it can be slid back forth for
calibration. In fact, the manual says:
The dial scale is marked in 10 KC divisions and is adjustable for
calibration purposes by sliding

Hm... The FIRST 2-A schematic is 1001, and the 2-A did NOT have
the button on the dial. The first 2-B schematic I've been able to find
is 3001, dated 9/22/61, with very minor circuit changes, including the
change from 6BN8 to 8BN8. However, the lowest 2-B s/n unit I have seen
I have #2277 Drake 2B and it does not have the red button either. It
has the 8BN8 tube.

I think I've found the answer to the no output problem I previously
described. I think the tuning at the lower levels on the T-4X may have been
messed with at some time and I will have to take slug measurements (a Drake
tech, 25 or so years ago, told me to never touch those if nobody had ever
My 2-B #4281has a white button. It seems original. I wonder what happened.

Not strictly a Drake question, but I'm using this with my TR-7, so
there's at least a *tenuous* connection!
I have a Ten-Tec model 291 antenna tuner. There are three knobs on

So far on the 2B front-glass-move-the-dial button we have:

#4281white buttonWW3QB
Any more? Just email the serial number, button status, and your
callsign and I'll enter them into the database.
My 2-B SN#3608 has a red button.

I don't know that there were NOT white buttons, but while I've seen a
lot of red ones, I've also see quite a few that were white with traces
of red where they went through the glass, or near the base. Possibly a
'Sun' thing?

I removed my 2-B from the cabinet to view the button from behind. It is more
pink, back there so it probably was red so many years ago. The red switches are
still red and the dial is clear, so it may have not been in the sun. Perhaps
the replacement buttons had better dye and stayed red.
OK, we're homing in on the transition point. With 12 entries submitted,
#2813 has no button and #3608 does, so that narrows the transition point to
somewhere in that delta of 795 units.
The baby of the 12 submissions is #12087; the elder statesman is
#2052 (mine).

Are the knob pointers (AF gain, RF gain, bandswitch, etc.) supposed to be
silver or white? All of mine look silver except for one that has been
clumsily painted over with some kind of white substance.
