Hi all,
Still waiting for better weather to put up an antenna but then ready to go with
my TR4/AC4 which are fine into a dummy load, or at least they were!
Bought a, supposedly good, AC4 as a spare. Decided to power it up gradually
with the TR4 as a load. Two hours at 50v, two at 80v, two a
I have just been fortunate enough to obtain an MN-2700 with Balun.
Sorry if this is slightly off topic, and I hope it is not a silly question, but
if I feed an antenna 150 foot away with 450 ohm twin feed, will it matter if it
passes through two mature pine trees whilst on its way? Also, if I
I know it must sound like a silly question but how do I, safely, remove the
rectangular can so I can try replacing V2 on my TR4? No trouble with the
circular cans on some other tubes but this can appears to have two clips and I
cannot see how they work and do not want to do any damage. The can
Hi all, How time flies. Been tied up with family matters for the last few
weeks so not had chance to install the new crystal for 15 metres until today.
Delighted to say that the TR4 is now working just fine on all bands, into a
dummy load anyway. I was wrong in thinking the problem was any
Alan, you could have taken the words out of my mouth. I have been pondering
exactly the same question with regard to the RX side of a recently acquired
TR4. Anyway, you can be sure of getting an amazing amount of help from the guys
on this net and I will look forward to hearing the advice you

Carl,
I will search the archives and thanks for the warning. I suspected there could
be potential problems worth knowing about.

Deoxit (Red) is hard to find in the U.K. Had to buy a box with four types in
it. Expensive too but I did not want to wait for mail from the U.S. I am sure
they will all come in useful.
Cleaned all crystal pins and sockets as advised. Instantly solved my, self
induced, problem with
Gary, Glad to have been of some little help. 73 Damien

Steve, Thanks again for all your most useful input. I will certainly be
contacting International Crystal. Your memory is only off by a fraction. It is
the 20 metre band which is 'backwards'. Regrettably I do not have an
oscilloscope but recognise that I am going to need one. My main inter
Gary,
Thank you very much indeed for your most helpful input on my problems and for
details of your website. Wow! You must have probably the best Drake
collection in the World.
Whilst I knew my TR4 had quite a late serial number, 27,883, I did not know
what real difference that mad
Steve, Thanks for your further input but, I do not think I have any accessory
sockets! Being a quite early TR4 it has the whole of 10m with three crystals.
I believe later models only came with part of 10m as standard. The only
crystals I have not removed are for 28.5 to 29.1 and 29.1 to 2
Thanks a lot to all for the info. I have ordered some Deoxit D100 and will use
as advised. In the meantime I will carefully check all the connectiions off the
rotary switches as previously suggested by Steve. 73 DamienG3XER

Thanks Steve and Chris for your helpful advice regarding a possible bad
crystal. I think you are right but somehow, despite being most careful, I seem
to have made matters worse! Are 45 year old crystals particularly delicate?
Should I renew them all?
Tried the 15m crystal in th
Hi all, It is time I gave all you kind folks a progress report. Found the
WB4IQK AC3/4 troubleshooting guide invaluable. Tested all voltages with the
covers off, very carefully! All okay. As promised by the seller I found that
the two caps and four diodes in the 650v circuit have been ren
Hello all, I am embarrassed but most grateful for all the kindness and helpful
advice given to me. Too many to thank individually but many many thanks to
all. The safety advice is taken very seriously and I will be ultra cautious
bearing in mind my inexperience. Already I am puzzled. Aston
Wow, thank you so much to all for the most useful information. Yes the AC4 is
wired for 240 v.
Hoped to string up some sort of temporary antenna this weekend and get on the
air but I now know I will be busy doing something else! Just hope I have the
technical abilty to sort it o
Hi all, Bought an immaculate looking TR4 which has been out of use a long time.
Also bought an AC4 which claims to have had the original EHT caps and diodes
replaced. Powered them up with 20 vac for four hours, then up in 20 v steps at
four hours per step, listening and sniffing for any pro
A most interesting thread. However may I ask for a clarification please?
I have always understood, mainly from Bill Orr's wonderful but out of print
books, that a 5/8 vertical had the lowest angle main lobe and hence was
superior for DX to a 1/4 wave vertical, all othrer factors being equal.
Hi everyone,
I have a TR4 and a TR4CW and have just bought a Collins 30L-1 amp. I have no
knowledge or experience of amps at all.
Is there anyone who could kindly advise a 'dummy' of an easy way to interface
the two? As I understand it the 30L-1 requires 170 volts to be switched!
