Cebik had me thinking about a three-armed center-fed dipole array,
but that seems really ambitious for my first attempt. I'm having
enough trouble getting my act together to put up anything there.
My K2 arrived about 2 weeks ago. SN 5411

Just curious, what's the latest serial number being shipped?

I built a PAC-12 antenna for my K2 (low power version) about 2 years ago. I
used #14 solid copper insulated house wire on 1 PVC pipe for my coils. I made
coils for 40M thourgh 10M. I use 4 radials made from 22 ga twin speaker wire
for all bands, using 16 foot ones for 40M, 20M and 15M, and 8
Fred,
First, keep resistance readings made with an analog ohmmeter far away from
IC devices. The voltages used can turn on (saturate) circuits and not only
cause incorrect/misleading readings, but in some cases could damage solid
state devices. Even the inexpensive DMMs will provide good
I'd think you'd do better to buy a DMM rather than sending the board to
Elecraft. Spend the same $ on tools rather than services. The DMM
would be useful for the rest of the kit and you'll learn a bit more.

3. Measuring all the ohmeter resistance
Hi All,
Just ordered a K2 last week and am looking forward to
melting some solder and having some fun!
I see that Elecraft offers a Heil Proset tailored to
the K2. Ironically, I bought a Proset just a few
months ago with the HC4 element.
Can anyone tell me how superior the mic in the
Elecraft
I've used a couple different non-Elecraft Heil headsets with my K2. I use the
standard Heil Proset Plus which has both the HC4 HC5 elements as well as the
BM-5 (I think that is the model, single earpiece with an HC5 element I think).
The only thing I did to the K2 was modify one resistor,
I would just call or eMail Heil and ask them which
element (HC-4 DX or HC-5) they use in the Elecraft
headset. Give you odds your HC-4 will work dynamite
with the K2... 73, Art W6KY

Has anyone had experience with the CSI88 desoldering tool from Circuit
Specialists Inc.? It appears similar but not necessarily comparable in
concept to the Hakko 808. The price is definitely attractive but then
again as in a lot of cases you get what you pay for.
Appreciate any feedback if
Thanks to everyone for your quick and thoughtful
responses. Interestingly, the Elecraft Proset uses a
condenser mic element. I'd always assumed that the
HC-4 and HC-5 were dynamic elements. Maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks again and 73,

Ken,
You are right, the Heil HC-4 and HC-5 are dynamic elements. I use Heil's
Proset Plus with the HC-4 and HC-5 elements, and get full specified PEP from
an unmodified K2/100 #3255.

Here's my report to share my experiences ideas:
I've got my K2 up and running about 1.5 weeks ago after editing the manual
to incorporate the few points from the errata and the changes from the
Rework Eliminators Guide (www.unpcbs.com) to have a rework-free upgradable
K2.
It took me two weekend
My first SSB QSO with my 10-watt K2 was with a DX station who said he
wouldn't have picked me put of the pilleup except for my excellent
audio.
I was (and still am) using the Heil HC4 dynamic mike element which I
retrofitted into my old station mike.

Wow Joe, you put yours together fast! In about the same time I've
managed to modify my manual and stuff about 1/3 of the parts into the
control board :-)
My K2 is going together with the rework eliminators and UNPCBs as well.
I'm not too far through the process and so far the re/UNPCBs have just

This really does sound like a great idea and something
I should incorporate into my new K2.
Although, looking at their website I couldn't tell the
difference between an UNPCB and a Rework Eliminator.
The whole thing left me confused...I'm sure it's
mostly just me, but it's going to take some
Hi Ron,
Agreed. If the transceiver is complete then the
benefit is diminished, but life is still a little
easier if you have to remove a module and possibly
re-insert it later. Depends on how many times you end
up removing and replacing.
I expect to receive my K2 in a few days, so they look
Ron - Yes, the work is equal to adding the upgrades themselves but you
end up with a rig that can have the options removed and replaced with
the UNPCBs (for testing, selling) with no further re-rework. It also
gives you a chance to do all the rework at one time while you have
everything set up.
hello all,
my K2 (no tuner, 10W) is fine on SSB now, I use the Kenwood dynamic
microphone (600 Ohm) now and it sounds very good. I have purchased a
Heil Proset together with my K2 kit, and now I'd like to connect it to the K2.
I
have a Heil Kenwood adapter from former times when I connect
I've seen a lot of anti-hazard warnings here and

What you are seeking rather than an earth ground, is to tie the commons of
the equipment you are working upon, and yourself, suitably protected by the
wrist strap internal resistor, to the same point, and thus voltage
potential. You are trying to have everything at the same potential before
Indeed, some house grounds have induced voltages in having long runs back to
any ground point; and might not be the safest thing to tie your static mat
to as a ground point. Ground in AC systems may have imbalance phase
currents and be much different from a zero voltage point. It shouldn't
Hi All
My kb3080 module came today, its now fitted and working Fb in my KX1

the SSB module comes out (Just Joking)

They don't need one.
The idea is to keep you, your tools, the equipment your working on and
your PSU, antenna, test equipment etc at the same potential. It doesn't
matter what that potential. Your mains electricity supply ground is
certainly sufficient as most things will already be
Heil Proset with the IC element (look on the boom pivot) requires a
5.6k ohm resister between pins 1 and 6.

That 1 meg resistor not only causes a slow discharge of any static buildup
on you it also protects you. You could easily get a good zap by connecting
yourself with a solid wire to what you think is ground. Don’t think that
you can save money by hooking up a test lead to your wrist watch band and

I bought mine from HRO in Burbank - they called Heil while I was waited, and
asked his advice. He said that I should use the Icom headset with the
Kenwood cable, which I bought. I've gotten very good audio reports over
time. I also use the Heil footswitch. Tom W6EIJ
Completely new to the K2. Just picked up a used one to see if the rig was
everything that I have read about for the past several years.
I am not getting favorable reports on my audio. I use the Heil hand mic
that Elecraft sold. I have been told that I may be crowding the mic.

Kevin,
You might post what serial # you have so everyone knows the vintage.
My K2 (4331) has plenty of output audio but I have yet to get a good audio
report on it. It doesnt sound bad, but just not keep up with the other rigs
in the shack (Pro III and Pegasus). I am running a Heil/Elecraft
