Hi,
I built the 100 W PA about 15 months ago. There was a choke across the
antenna jack at J2, to prevent build-up of any static charge at the antenna
jack.
However, I see in the latest manual of the PA that this choke is not shown.
Any reason for it?

Pierre,
The presence of RFC10 inside the KPA100 could cause a parasitic
oscillation on 40 meters if conditions were right and there was RF
pickup into the KPA100 from the choke. The T-R switch area was
re-designed and as part of that re-design, RFC10 was removed.
If you need a static
I have built many (over 270) K2's to date. Let me build one for you. My
prices are reasonable and you receive a new, built radio ready to play.

Hi all,
Got my KX1 (#1744) and paddle kit put together in 4 relatively easy
sessions. T1 was probably the only complicated item, as I'm a bit of a
klutz. ;o) The autotuner will be following today, then the 30/80 kit in a
few days.
Now I need to get out and USE the darn thing. I'm hearing some
Just opened up the KPA100 and saw the sheet for the mods mentioned
above. I do not see a statement about them being incorporated after a
certain serial number. Have they been incorporated?

I looked through the installation manual for my K2, and found most of
the parts referenced, installed with the new values, so I assume that
both of these mods are incorporated in the new builds.

Dave,
That is true - the K2s have included those changes for quite a while
now, but every KPA100 kit contains those parts in support of those who
still have older/non-updated K2s.
Still, it is good that you verified you have the correct values
installed in your K2.

Finishing up K2 6042 today. Have fine output on all bands, but no receive! I
did use another HF rig to create signal for alignment . . . and I did hear
that. I can also hear SPOT, so think amp is okay. But nothing from antenna.
For reference, I connected my K1 to same antenna and receive
Sure thing. I identified most, but not all. I could not find D8
mentioned in the document. Doesn't mean it isn't in there, just didn't
find it. I will find my soft copy later and do a search and see if I
can sort out the rest. If not, I will pop the covers and check.

typical or not. When I put the display function into battery voltage

No receive as in dead, no noises, or no receive as in I do not hear a
signal where I think I should? Do you hear the birdie at 7 Mhz?

My K2/100 (#5945) has been working well lately, until I started
noticing higher output at times, more pronounced with higher SWR
antennas (i.e. it would more often spike it's output power if
connected to an antenna with more than 1.3:1 SWR, the output power
would rise to 140W).
About the same
I do hear hiss and white noise, no propagated signals whatsoever, except one
very light cw transmission that sounded kind of like thumps on the wrong
side of the band. And as I mentioned, I can hear internal sidetone.

Ok, strange...
Power-cycling the K2 *seems* to get my power back to 100%.
There have been a few times that I've noticed that power output seems
strange, and finding that turning the rig on/off/on seems to bring it
back.
So, is that an issue with relays being sticky, or...?
Thanks,

Jeff,
Before we give any answer, we need to know the level of the KPA100.
Did you build it from the manual Revision D or the earlier Rev C?
Another way of checking - do you have a toroid at L15 and is RFC10 present?
It is not likely to be a sticking relay problem - that almost never
happens
Don, thanks, it's the newest KPA100, just bought/built it about a
month or two ago...

Mike,
The best starting place that I can suggest is to go the Elecraft website
- on their Builder's Resource page, download the 'K1 and K2 Cheap and
Dirty Signal Tracing' document - there is nothing 'dirty' about it, and
it is not only cheap but effective to locate a failing stage.

Jeff,
In that case, what is the size of C31? If it is the old .033 uF it must
be changed to the new .22 uF value. You can get one from Elecraft when
they get back in the office, but if you have two .1 uF caps with a
voltage rating of 50 volts or more, you can parallel them for the time
Don, C31 is the new value, just replaced it a few weeks ago...

Just completed the KPA 100, and it works FB. I am awaiting the shield update
kit, as it is backordered.
Thanks for everyone's help.

my C31 is a .033uF.

Dave,
FB that your C31 is .033 uF - but that alone is not an indicator. Do you
also have a toroid at L16 AND no RFC10 as well (and blue toroid cores
at L15 and RFC1)? All these things must go together. The prior design
KPA100 with RFC10 and L16 installed did properly use a .033 uF
Jeff,
In that case, review the soldering (and toroid lead stripping) in the
wattmeter section. See the KPA100 schematic sheet 1 on the right side.
T4 and components attached to it, U5 and components associated, and U6
with its associated components. Q10 and Q11 play a role in the scaling
Well, I think that the removal of RFC10 is adding a risk to this fine rig.
To rely on external protection (at the antenna
or at the transmission line is risky at best.. As far as I know, all major
brands (Icom, Yaesu..) are providing the extra protection
given by an appropriate choke inside the
I have a spot for L16, I did not inventory the toroids as I ordered
those from the toroid guy. I did not receive an RFC10, and I do not see
a spot for RFC10, though I am quite capable of missing it.

OK ... what is preventing you from installing the choke? My K2/100
has it and does not have the oscillation problem.
